My husband is vegan. The other four people in our party are not. It was Xmas day and the choices were limited. We went for hibachi. We asked the waiter to ensure my husband's rice and veggies had no butter or eggs. To ensure, he wanted it cooked in front of him like everyone else's food (though they said they need to cook special requests in the back). We frequent hibachi places and this has never been an issue. The chef was perturbed. He made my husband's stuff first. He slapped the rice on the plate and it fell all onto his hat that was on the table. The biggest issue was the food had zero flavor. My husband tried to explain to him they just because he's vegan doesn't mean he shouldn't use the standard salt, pepper, lemon, teriyaki, sesame seeds, etc. They called over a young lady. Though she was nice, she didn't understand. First, she told the chef to simply pour him some teriyaki. Then she took the plate in the back and said they would remake. They didn't. They took the same plate and added sauce in the back. My husband and I tasted it and it was even worse than before. The kicker was our server trying to tell us that the chef didn't use teriyaki in the beginning because teriyaki sauce has egg in it My daughter ordered shrimp and salmon. She said the salmon was the worst salmon she ever tasted. We didn't even complain. It was pointless. The bartender (Caucasian male) tried to assist with the language barrier. He was kind and asked if there was anything he could do to help. I asked him if he could bring a bowl of miso soup for my husband to hold him over until I get home. Extremely Disappointing Experience Written in real time; visited 8/15/2025 and posting at 10:24pm We arrived at 7:35 PM, and were told that our wait would only be 5-10 minutes. Unfortunately, it took a full **30 minutes** before we were seated, and that was only after we had to go back to the hostess stand and ask for an update--after waiting **25 minutes** with zero communication. Not once were we informed about the delay until we initiated the conversation ourselves. Once seated at 8:05 PM, things didn't improve. We were finally asked for drink orders about **15 minutes** later. But it wasn't until **8:30 PM** that our food orders were taken. The timing of service was horrendous, and we sat there, trying to be patient, but the lack of communication and attention to our table was appalling. By **8:53 PM**, we still hadn't heard anything, and we had to find someone to ask when our food would actually be prepared. Our chef finally arrived at the table around **9:00 PM**, almost two hours after we arrived. The real disappointment came when we saw how the food was cooked. Both my partner and I ordered steak and scallops: I ordered my steak **medium-rare**, and she ordered hers **medium**. We both received steaks that were **well-done**, if not **overcooked**. This was incredibly frustrating after waiting so long. To make matters worse, a woman at the table (not in our party) requested **no mushrooms**, so the chef served everyone at the table **no mushrooms in the vegetables at all**. The lack of attention to detail was really disappointing. While the staff were friendly, the **lack of communication** and **slow service** made for a miserable dining experience. By the time the food was prepared, both my group (two adults and two children) and another couple seated with us decided to **ask for to-go boxes and leave**. We only stayed as long as we did because my niece and nephew wanted to watch the food being cooked. Otherwise, we would've left much sooner. Ordered the pork gyoza, a spicy tuna roll, and the lucky 7 roll to split. Easily enough food for 2 people. Best gyoza I've had in forever. Beautiful presentation for both dishes as well. This place is pretty average. We visited here for a friend's birthday and it started off by them not having a setup ready for our group even though our friend made a reservation a week in advance. It took them probably an hour or so to have a setup available for our group of 14. They originally wanted us to split up and be at two different grills. The food itself was just average. I ordered the steak and shrimp combo. And it comes with noodles and rice. It was a nice change up to get noodles as well but they weren't anything special. The miso soup they started off with was really good though! The service was mentioned above. But after sitting down it wasn't too bad. They got orders done and out fairly quickly. And the chefs were actually fun and involved with our group by doing the sake bottle into our mouths and by having us try and catch vegetables in our mouth. The ambiance was casual and typical of a regular hibachi restaurant. Nothing to really report. There is a parking garage nearby so that's convenient. Overall, this is a fine establishment and that's been a mainstay in Silver Spring for a very long time. It can get packed, so be aware that the systems need little finetuning. It's easiest to come with just a couple of people,last night I saw lots of very large groups that were waiting for a while, it's well known. For the Hibachi, the filet mignon is the best way to go IMO. It's tender, tasty, and not over seasoned. The food is good but doesn't blow you away. The chef we had did some tricks and made us all laugh while cooking the food. The portions are massive and most people walk away with a full to go box. We got good service and enjoyed the meal, what else is there? It's pretty loud, so if you have guests that are hard of hearing, this might not be the best environment for them. A recommendation for the bar: I ordered the Scorpion Punch as I normally do, but this time, it was literally every alcohol and no juice. It was so strong that I had to go to the bar and get a cup of juice to add in, which they graciously did for me at no extra charge. Hibachi without theatrics is just overpriced food cooked in front of you by someone who clearly doesn't want to be there. Near the end of the meal, my plate was taken without asking while I was still eating, despite there being plenty of food left. When my wife brought it up, staff offered to remake the meal to take home. Then it turned hostile. Another employee came over loud, aggressive, and confrontational, waving around an empty plate that was NOT mine, insisting that's all I had left. She continued escalating, nearly yelling, while I calmly explained she had the wrong plate and that my actual plate still had chicken, fried rice, noodles, and vegetables on it. During this exchange, multiple employees -- who had already shown they can speak perfectly good English -- began speaking to each other in their native language right in front of us while actively arguing about the situation. That's not cultural -- that's unprofessional, exclusionary, and disrespectful, especially during a customer dispute. No apology. No accountability. Just attitude until I finally said forget it. For the privilege of this experience, we paid around $100 for 2 appetizers, 2 meals, and 2 sweet teas, with an automatic 18% gratuity added -- for service that was careless, rude, and borderline hostile. The hibachi cook was honestly a really great chef ! He brought laughter to the table and I really enjoyed myself with my family. He made sure to interact with the kids at the table also. No one was left out. But on the other hand I enjoyed my food , but then at some point my stomach started hurting really bad I'm not sure if it was the yum yum sauce or the noodles but referring back to the noodles they were kinda sour especially with the sauce on them. The ambiance is ok, getting a bit outdated through the years but still nice. Service has been ok. I've tried the hibachi, which is pretty typical - you're mostly paying for the "show". I'm mostly here for the sushi, which is pretty solid and fresh. Also beautifully plated, I don't know why I can only find one picture lol! STAY AWAY!!!! I've been going to Masa for at least 10 year and NO MORE! I hate that they rush you at the hibachi tables. You cant enjoy any appetizers or drinks; they bring your food right away. Then they give you the check halfway through your meal. AND they add the gratuity in, so be careful not to double tip!!!! Went to Masa w my family for a holiday dinner for 8. Friendly staff, lots of options from the menu, huge portions. Several of my adult children love Hibachi style restaurants...so we let them decide. The food was very underwhelming. Not much flavor, too much soy sauce and that dressing they give you for food. The seafood was cooked well, but the chicken and steak were overcooked. The rice was ok and the noodles were bland and probably pre-cooked bc they had no taste either. We also ordered some sushi (California Roll and 2 orders of the Pink Lady roll, all COOKED features, nothing raw. My son's girlfriend got a food bug that night w vomiting and diarrhea!!!!! She had California Roll and a few bites of seaweed salad and water. She ate the least amount of food. One of my son's is a regular customer there, but my husband and I won't be returning largely due to the quality of the food. Updating since I've been here many, many times now, both for hibachi and for happy hour. It's still my favorite happy hour in town, almost all the drinks are winners. I will warn, they are strong pours in general. Have a designated driver or some other way to not drive. I really like the hibachi too, especially the steak & scallop -- the scallops melt in your mouth. I always have enough to take half of it home and it makes surprisingly good leftovers. The other night, I was actually designated driver so got to experience it perfectly sober for the first time, and I still loved the food and the two virgin pina coladas that I downed. I like this place a lot. The customer service is amazing and the Chefs always interact with the crowd. I enjoy the filet mignon and it is cooked to order. I have been a few times I was able to test out a couple of their appetizers and though I probably don't enjoy the shrimp tempura platter as much the crab Rangoon is pretty good. I just finished having a birthday lunch for my twin five-year-olds and it was a good time while the chef put on a personal show for them on their birthday. Me and my wife love this spot! Every time we come here the food is always good, the service too! I didn't realize that there was such a thing as bad hibachi until we experience it about a month ago at another establishment. This visit was particularly memorable. As soon as we got there, we were seated. It wasn't super busy, probably because it was mid day on a weekend. We always get hibachi, and this time, tried a spicy salmon roll. The waitress let us know about their happy hour, which on Sundays is ALL DAY! The roll was delicious. We also got some happy hour drinks, the pomegranate margarita and Bahama mama. DELICIOUS. I got the combo hibachi with chicken and steak: my go to. It comes with fried rice AND noodles, salad with ginger dressing, soup and 2 shrimp. Great deal for $33 if you ask me. The atmosphere was relaxed and it seems like they are very family oriented. There seemed to be a lot of "regulars" there and all of the staff was so engaging with everyone. Came back last night after over a year of not dining much in person (mostly outdoors which Masa does not have) for my fiancé's birthday and to ask our best friend to be best man at our wedding. It was a Thursday night at 630 so we were able to combine both the happy hour and buy one get one sushi roll deal. To start we ordered edamame and the Masa Pepper Salmon as well as apple and mango martinis to drink. Soon we got second drinks Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling (which is from the Seattle area my fiancé is from) and the Sake Cosmo. When our friend came, we asked him to be best man and gave him a gift, he ordered a Sam Adam's to celebrate. For the dinner round, we ordered both happy hour sushi rolls (Green Island and Spicy Salmon) and the BOGO roll special (Crazy Tuna and Godzilla). Our friend ordered a few rolls that were more affordable and simple on the menu. We were still hungry after the first sets of rolls so we got another BOGO (Amazing Tuna and Lucky 7) as well as miso soup and our friend got 3 pieces of nigiri and miso soup too.
