I am not a regular here. And this is a restaurant full of regulars. Everyone seems to know everyone else. I came here a few years ago and left happy and tried to come here a couple of months ago unsuccessfully. The Saturday morn that I chose to bring my two teen sons it was closed. So today my oldest son was in the mountains tubing and my wife was on her Saturday hike around Kennesaw Mt. That left my 13 y. o. and I with nothing to do. So Stilesboro Biscuits here we come.
From reading others reviews I knew I might have to wade through a long line and this was no exception, The line was to just outside the door. But the line moves fairly quickly. I was kind of grateful for the line anyway. I needed some extra time to decide what to order. While standing in line Lynn, the effusive owner asked all in line if this was the first time there for anyone. One lady raised her hand and Lynn rang a triangle, like one of those old metal triangles you would see on the porch of a western ranch.
My son had a plain biscuit with jelly. I ordered a steak, egg and cheese biscuit with coffee. You then have a seat at one of 4-5 mismatched tables with a total stranger. The staff brings out your order and you enjoy one of the best biscuits you will ever eat. My biscuit was tasty, rather large and almost overwhelming, egg coming out the side, plenty for most adults. The coffee was very ho hum and there was no cream handy and only powdered creamer. Not wanting to appear even more like an outsider than I already did I kept my mouth shut and they eventually brought some out. Perhaps Lynn is not a coffee drinker. As far as the "strangers" at your table are concerned, before you are done with your breakfast you will have each others life stories and you won't be strangers anymore. (That last sentence sums up the Stilesboro Biscuits experience.)
After my son ate his biscuit he wanted to try one of their cinnamon rolls. When Jen brought it out he took a bite and, I kid you not, his eyes watered and he almost cried. When he had time to gather his thoughts he told me that was the best cinnamon roll he had ever eaten, like they had gotten one from heaven . I took a bite and it was indeed delicious.
So now I have some decisions to make. I like the food but feel like it isn't a great value. I love the staff but I feel like I need to either commit or move on. Do I join the cult or find somewhere else that I can just slide in, get my food and sneak back out without being noticed? Martins does good biscuits too, you know. Somehow though, between Lynns charm, the friendliness of the rest of the staff and the general neighborly feel of this homey spot, I think I'll keep coming back again and again. read more
