First off...wow has the North Hills area changed since I was there 5 years ago. I was lucky enough to leverage Yelp and find STIR. It is a pretty new situation (apparently) after it's sister location was opened in Chattanooga (no I don't know when.) But the decor, the buzz, and the artisanal ice (when did that become a thing but I'm glad that it did.) The best part was our server was also a bartender so she had amazing suggestions on dialing in what we may enjoy drinking. I was only here on a Wednesday but let's just say that by 5:30p the line was forming to sit...luckily we got there at just before 5p. Raw oysters for brunch plus an ice show and a free cold bar? Count me in! My friends and I had an amazing brunch at STIR. Making a reservation was easy and we were seated upon arrival. Ample parking was available in a nearby parking garage. We dined on a Sunday at 10:30 am. The restaurant was about half full. They have indoor and outdoor seating available. We chose to sit inside. Since the doors were open, even sitting inside there was a nice breeze and natural sunlight. Our waitress, Bethany, was amazing. She was welcoming, knowledgeable, and invited us to watch the ice show at a nearby table (when we inquired about the ice options). Although the other brunch options sounded delicious, I decided on the raw oysters (house, malpeque, and Stone's bay oysters). The Stone's Bay were preferred. They have a buttery flavor and are not overly salty. Along with the oysters, I tried the pasta salad, fruit, and brownie on the salad bar and drank a strawberry basil mimosa. The items on the cold bar were good. The mimosa lacked flavor. It had a hint of strawberry and no basil flavor. I recommend ordering a drink that has a specific ice shape chosen for it. We sat at the bar for our experience. The atmosphere is nice. The windows in the open to the outside so you can have bar service from the outside also. The drinks were good. The food was good. We ordered the Peruvian ceviche and was disappointed at the size for the price...and it wasn't that great. The raw oysters were fair. Whoever shucked them didn't know what they were doing. There were bits of the shell inside and the oysters weren't completely off the shell so you had to yank them off. The crab bisque was good. The steak frites was on point though. Overall, I thought it was a good dining experience, but will skip the oysters and the ceviche and perhaps try something else next time. read more

This is the 2nd time to this restaurant in the last year. Both times someone in our party had their meal prepared incorrectly, tonight it was me. A simple hamburger with no cheese and they delivered with cheese.. 20 minutes later the rest of my party was finished with their meal and mine still wasn't out. I told the waitress to cancel my order, not even an offer of a free drink. Bad service all around! To management.... Came here for brunch. Loved the overall vibrant atmosphere and the mysterious ladder behind the bar. The live music was a nice touch as well. The waiter was super laid back and honest which is always a plus. When I wanted to make some changes to my meal he made it happen. Also the sides bar had some good food and was diverse. My crab & shrimp benedict was good and still a light dish. The grits(not pictures) are AMAZING!! Also the drinks come as advertised. Its not pricey for what you get. (Really more of a 2.7, so take what you will.) Let's start with pros: it's a really nice and large space, lots of light, and overall just a good setting. It has the location and everything right. The restaurant tends to be really loud with music however, so just know that. But really overall a good space. The service is just ok. When I went the place was fairly empty, but we only saw our server three times in total, and he didn't really bother to check in on if the food was good or if we needed drink refills or anything like that. I've worked FOH before in the service industry, so I tend to be lenient about those sort of things, but it came across pretty lazy given there was no rush and it was early on in the service. The food is also just ok. Everyone raves about the oysters, so I should probably go and try that, but I have had the mahi-mahi, as well as the fish tacos, and both were pretty underwhelming. I really recommend skipping the fish tacos, just because it's majority pico, and not much fish at all. I guess I've just had a lot of great seafood in the area (think The Cortez, Locals Seafood, etc.) that this was a let down for me. Celebrated 48th anniversary on 6/2. Ordered 2 drinks from the bar, as our reserved table was not ready. Our table became ready as my husband was leaving the bar area with our drinks. Shortly after we sat down, a man stopped by our table, did not introduce himself, and asked where my husband "got his beer." At first we thought this individual was trying to get us to buy him a drink. My husband explained that he got the beer at the bar, along with my glass of wine. This man stated that the bar did not serve beer in the type of glass my husbands beer was in, basically accusing us of bringing a beer into the restaurant. Again, he did not introduce himself and at this point we realized he worked for the restaurant. Words were exchanged and this man stated that often times people bring in drinks from other bars. He apologized for upsetting us and left our table. After a short while, I sought this individual out and explained that he could have ruined a wonderful celebration by his approach to us. I explained that he could have asked the bartender if she served us, as we were in direct line of sight of the bar. In addition, I asked his name ( Dave) and explained that he did not introduce himself and we had no idea who he was. He again apologize, stating he realized his approach to what he perceived as a situation was incorrect. Our server Deja was excellent. The oysters and fried green tomatoes were outstanding. The entrees were so so. The likelihood of returning to this restaurant is slim. read more

I just want this message to go to the general manager and / or owner. While you have the potential to be a great restaurant your staff is absolutely ruining it . On two separate occasions I have experienced I either ignored or refused a seat for no reason at all while I watched caucasians being seated and served with great and timely customer service . Your hostess phone etiquette is poor and rude. I called at 10:58 pm this evening to confirm stir would be open after google said stir would be open until 12am. I walked in stir at 11:01pm and the same hostess that answered the phone and told me Stir was open refused to seat me. I suggest your staff state to customers over the phone if they are going to be refused seating 2 minutes after a phone call ends. I'm really upset that out of all the restaurants I could've chose to spend my money at tonight and I chose yours only to be treated this way! I am a chef and food enthusiast and I am really disappointed . No restaurant should treats its customers this way. read more

I've visited STIR twice. Drinks are good and the ice is really fun. The food, however, is mediocre at best with the exception of the truffle fries which are delicious. Last night I got the filet with crab ravioli. The ravioli was amazing, but there was only one piece on top of the filet, not what I was expecting. The filet had little flavor and was purple in the middle. I ordered medium well. The dish came with sweet potatoes and pesto. The potatoes were hard and lacked flavor and the pesto was really spicy. It was honestly more like a chimichurri sauce. Overall the dish just didn't go well together and was extremely mediocre. Not what you expect when you purchase the second most expensive item on the menu. I would come back for drinks, but not for food. read more

My experience at STIR was delightful. The hostesses up front were quick to get us seated on a Saturday afternoon. We got seated and were giving small, complimentary glasses of water. I ordered the strawberry and basil mimosa which was delicious. My table got a chicken and waffles which was delicious, as well as a breakfast burger (I believe,) which no complaints there either. My order was the biscuits and gravy, and the taste of the gravy was good but the consistency was watery, it was by thick enough to cover the biscuits. Also the egg was supposed to be over-easy and came back entirely cooked. But overall, everything was delicious. Also we thoroughly enjoyed those complimentary appetizers which consisted of fruit, a chicken salad with pita bread, and chocolate chip cookies. Those cookies were so incredible, I don't know why I loved them so much. And also a shout out to our server, Sophia (or Sofia, I didn't catch the spelling.) She was incredibly sweet and patient! Yes a 3-star, I so want to give 4-stars but our food was just not worth it. The service is outstanding, as are the cocktails but the wine is overly priced. Considering a glass of La Crema was $15 and a bottle at the store is $12. And no I'm not a penny pitcher and yes I go out often but the wine prices are a bet over the top. Back to date night, we sat at the bar, quickly welcomed by a number of bartenders and orders were placed for cocktails. I started with a vodka mule and my hubby a Bullet neat, paired with Oysters Rockefeller, 6 in an order and come out promptly. The oysters were lovely, as was the spinach mix but the shaved Parmesan was off (very waxy). We asked for dinner recommendations and went with those. Avocado & Mahi Cevich for hubby and Crispy Mahi Bowl. Well this where the 3-stars come in. The Avocado wasn't ripe and the fish was overly dressed think swimming in dressing. The Crispy Mahi Bowl while it sounded amazing lacked. This is where I should have asked more questions...in my head I thought the Mahi would have this char one would get from a pan-sear that would give it the crisp. Nope it's done in a cornmeal battered with zero flavor and it sits atop this very flavorful rice (which was over cooked). The plate is flat with little pop of color and lacked flavor. Overall the service at the bar is 4-stars and the establishment fits well within the NH area. read more

Stir has become one of my favorite summer restaurants. Their cocktail menu is so extensive. They offer over 350 bottles of liquor and a few local beers on tap. All the menu options are delicious. Happy Hour is weekdays from 4-6pm. They offer $1 raw oysters and tacos and sliders for a discounted price. Located in the Bank of America Tower at North Hills next to The Capital Grille, Stir has many options for seating including both indoor and outdoor areas. The tower provides a shadow over the front of the restaurants so sitting outside is always nice. The servers are very knowledgeable about the menu and the types of drinks they serve. For drinks had the Viva La Astral (it tasted like cucumber water), he had the specialty cocktail the Jolly Roger...it was too sweet for me. We were not that hungry so we split the Cold Bar Platter and it was plenty enough for two. The shrimp and oysters were delish, I was very surprised! We had heard really good things about the cocktails, so we were excited to try this place. My husband ordered something from the menu, and I asked for a Dark and Stormy only to find out the bar doesn't have ginger beer which is disappointing since all of my favorite drinks include ginger beer, but I ordered a sangria which was decent. Our server struggled through describing the various types of oysters available. Clearly didn't have a strong understanding of the menu. We ordered four oysters as an app, and the server put in an order for a dozen. When he dropped the dozen oysters, he didn't even pause long enough for us to tell him we'd only ordered four, or for him to tell us which oysters were which types, or for us to ask for silverware. After this point, we never saw him again. We flagged down a different server to ask for silverware. Our drinks emptied. No server insight. Entrees dropped. No one checked in on us to make sure everything was OK or get drink orders. 30 minutes passed, we finished eating and drinks remained empty. After multiple attempts to catch our server's eye, we finally flagged down a busser to request the check and a Manager. The Manager reduced our check as way of apology for the terrible service, which I appreciated. I know it's hard to open a restaurant of this size, so I will probably give STIR another chance in a few months once they've weeded out the folks not meant to serve. However, I would really recommend they A) start stocking ginger beer to make many of the popular summer drinks, and B) spend more time in staff meetings getting everyone familiar with various food and drink offerings. read more

I really like the concept of this place and think it has great potential. However, I was a little disappointed on my first visit. My friends and I went to STIR on its second week open. Overall the food was good, but there were a few things that determined my rating. Service: It was a packed Friday night. Our waitress was very kind, but seemed to have a lot going on - leading to very few check-ins and delayed visits. When we finally got around to ordering, there were several things that were "no longer available" from the menu. Food: We ordered truffle fries, fish tacos, and shrimp & grits. Fries and salad were good. However, we sent the fish tacos back because they really skimped on the fish to filling ratio. As probably a three bite taco, you could only get one bite of fish and the rest was just filler. Shrimp & grits were good! Drinks: Delicious! We got the Flower Power & Elderflower Sour and both were great! In summary, drinks were great! Service was good. Food shortage and ratios led to the lower rating. I'll definitely give this place some time to get in their groove & will plan to revisit. read more
