First. We were looking for a remodeling of the Kitchen and Master Bathroom. It was planned to do it in 2020. Then COVID. The time spend as researching, researching, researching. We had several quotes (few in the 6 digits). My husband and I just couldn't agree on which one to choose from. The quotes were either too high or did not on design, and sometimes both. I called STL Design and Build Design, setup an appointment as my last resort. STL Design sent Tom Levinson. Mr. Levinson arrived earlier than time with his assistant. This is definitely a rare. We went through the areas for remodeling. Tom sat me down and listen to all I wanted to do. Then it came down to the details and pricing. The wants an can't live without. We finished with an estimated quote that we were very happy with. Tom was wonderful. He gave me sound advice on my selections for the kitchen remodel. He went through the cost, time-line, and process. Tom went to warehouses with me for selections on the items. Matthew Pevehouse, thank goodness for him. I had a family emergency out-of-state. Matt took care of everything for us. The whole crew were wonderful. Matt took pictures and kept me up to date. If there was an issue it was quickly resolved. My husband and I are thrilled with the results. The look is absolutely fabulous, the craftsmanship and quality of products excellent, and done on time. Thank You STL for a wonderful experience. We had our primary bath remodeled. STL Design & Build was definitely not the least expensive route I could have chosen, but they were able to accomplish what I wanted without compromise. Our entire bath was reconfigured, including plumbing and electrical. I did the initial selections, then had second thoughts. It was not a problem to change my mind and make sure I was happy with my selections. Once the work started (which was several months after signing the contracts but right on schedule), I was very pleased with the professionalism and friendliness of the men doing the day to day work. I can't say enough about Brandon and Scott. They greeted us and our pets each day. They informed me when they had to do electrical and plumbing in our basement before going down. A dust shield was put up, and drop cloths were laid down from the front door to the bathroom. Everything was cleaned up after each day. Even though they had plans to follow, I was asked before permanent fixtures and outlets were added to make sure the placement was what I wanted. The men were meticulous about their work. Excellent craftsmanship! Hardest workers I have ever had in our home. I am very, very happy with our beautiful master bath! The only negative thing I could add is that painting is not included. Run don't walk! Pictures speak for themselves. Inexperienced staff and horrible material. All cabinets had paint defects (1 arrived with a hole in the side they patched by putting up a panel and wouldn't order a new one). Workers ran out of grout so they used CAULK to grout our tile which ended up having to be completely tore out and all new tile ordered. Left for weeks at a time with no phone call. Inexperienced in electrical. A master electrician (the company sent out after we had problems) stated himself that the work they did was not up to code. Had to have a plumber come out to redo the garbage disposal because they hooked it up incorrectly and did a shark bite on the water line and stated this would have eventually caused leaking. Caulk used around crown molding was yellow. Sink was not centered under kitchen window. Huge hole under cabinet and wire for under cabinet lighting showing. Super cheap under cabinet light. It was an overall horrible experience. They did end up having a few good works come out to "fix" the issues caused by the original worker but still have major cabinet painting issues. It's been 2 years and our cabinets need to be stripped and repainted. read more

My bathroom is done and I love it! I love being in it and I think it's so relaxing and so much better than before. But my rating is truly 4.5 stars. I rounded up, cuz I'm so happy with the end result. My down grade is based on it being such a large company. I never spoke to the same person twice when I spoke to the main office. It just felt a little disorienting to not have a team in place. However, once I had the contractors in my house, I felt a lot better. Then the team was pretty consistent (though a senior member kept being called away to another project). I loved the contractors who worked on my bathroom remodel. They were friendly, professional and they all did great work. They truly went above and beyond. For instance, originally, they were going to install shelves made of some cheaper material, but after seeing my bathroom with its nice stained glass window, they decided to build me custom shelves out of wood. I'm so glad they did. They look perfect and fit my overall style. STL Design & Build did such an awesome job on my bathroom! They helped pick a vanity, a counter, shelves, lighting and they even reset my toilet and resealed my stained glass. They were not the cheapest, but they also are not overpriced. I have an old house (no 90 degree angles and perfectly straight walls here!) and they were able to hide all those structural imperfections. It might be magic (far as I know), but the counter/vanity is flush with the walls and the mirror is straight and well positioned. It looks perfect and I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. Just look at the before/after pics! read more

We had these guys replace 20 windows last spring. The work started in May and didn't finish until July! Were told we'd have experienced installers but on the first day of work, 2 of the 3 guys were first day on the job. Poor workmanship resulted in numerous different people coming out to review and fix all kinds of problems. One of the supervisors was either lying or in over his head to the point where his communications went dark. One thing they did well was take down and properly replace existing plantation shutters. The windows seem to work fine so far but the process was by far the most painful home project we've ever experienced. read more

We were happy to have STL Design and Build do our full kitchen remodel. While we had multiple issues with the first worker who was sent to our home, STL Design and Build was quick to respond to the problem, the employee was terminated and was replaced with two employees who were professional, fast and did a fantastic job. All the materials used and the workmanship of installation is beyond all expectations. The cabinets are solid, have soft close doors and drawers and the color is perfect. Due to electrical problems that were discovered during our remodel we ended up having the whole kitchen rewired, thankful that they did not just paste it all back together because it was a serious fire hazard lurking in our walls. We appreciate the extra outlets too. Everything really is perfect from the flooring to our new ceiling fan. We would, and have recommended STL Design and Build to many people. One big plus for us is that two of the owners have a child who has a physical disability and we do as well. So if you are in need of modifications related to accessibility STL Design and Build really is the perfect choice as they have first hand experience with what works and what does not when it comes to making a home truly accessible for people who have disabilities. We will be remodeling our bathroom in a year and we look forward to working with STL Design and Build on that project as well. read more

Although happy to have an updated bathroom, we would not recommend working with STL Design & Build due to a lack of customer service and overall stress involved. A contract was signed in August 2018 for a complete bathroom remodel. We were quoted a 4-6wk timeline to be complete by end of year. Our project did not start until the following February and was not complete until June 2019. Due to poor workmanship, the contractor on our job was eventually relieved of his duties by the company. At job completion they rated their own work a "C", but then forced us to point out every issue instead of reviewing and fixing themselves. Hundreds of pieces of tape later, we had to go through painful discussions. One example was being told uneven tile is an industry standard, which we then had to argue against before it would be replaced (picture attached). After their fixes, we spent 8+ hours with toothbrushes fixing the grout lines and had to repaint for a second time. Lastly, the tub faucet was installed with a pinched line leading to an incredibly low flow rate. We were repeatedly told that we would have to pay to have it fixed because it was not an install issue. They then had to open up our guest room ceiling to confirm that it was indeed an install issue. The Salesman stated that they don't advertise, that all their work is referral based and boasted a superior rating with the BBB. It was reiterated over and over that their builders were experienced and skilled in working with the material we chose, Tiger Wood. The deck was originally a 14 x 17 and was expanded to a 16 x 17 Tiger Wood Deck, which included a different layout for the stairway. Nothing drastic in the build, basically a raised rectangular deck. We were told the job would take 5-6 business days. We entered into a contract with STL Design and Build and the project began May 17th, 2019 and finally "finished" September 4, 2019. The job was plagued by inexperienced workers, significantly poor communication between the crews and the main office, poor craftsmanship, and less than quality materials. The original work crew that showed up, demo'd and dumped the old deck in the driveway. They continually complained that they were not familiar with the material, wasted material, burned out several pieces of equipment and did not clean up after themselves. As result of their not cleaning up, we became targets for disgruntled neighbors and the HOA; the old and new deck debris was piled in the driveway for a week before a dumpster showed up. The job foreman was rarely on the job site, and when discrepancies or issues were asked about, they were all discounted or some other excuse was given. Their workmanship was not good and lack of experience was evident. The material is a hard wood and requires predrilling, which they did not do. As a result, many boards cracked. On several occasions when more material was brought in, it appeared to be scrap material from other jobs. This was obvious by the number of holes, scrapes and staples, etc. When this was relayed to the main office, the response was, "there is at least one good side". Many times, the crew that did show up did not know what still needed to be done. Many fixes had to be made as the weeks continued. The company and their work were questionable from Day 1. Their attempt to fix items usually resulted in things becoming worse, if they attempted to fix at all. Only after one of the senior company personnel got onsite, did actual things seem to improve somewhat. Some fixes were made, but this was well beyond the mid-point of the build and our frustrations. We would walk through regularly, create lists of what needed to be addressed and send texts and pictures to STL Design & Build. That info was never passed along to the person/crew that would be onsite. Before they oiled the deck (the first time), we had asked several times if the oil was the correct substance; it was not. The deck grayed within a week and black pigment stains could be seen on the boards. They did eventually realize that they used the wrong substance and planned to return and completely sand the deck and re-oil. Unfortunately, the belt sander was cancelled, and the worker that showed up had to run to the local hardware store to get one. When they finally reoiled, they did not reoil the hand railing, which has now dried out and rough. You can clearly see the start and stops of the oil on the deck boards. Overall, not the appearance that we were expecting from the initial consultation. On our final walk-thru went as anticipated. Two people showed up (1 being the senior company rep) both explained away the issues that remained. We still had items that we wanted fixed and we were told "if it gets worse, give us a call". We received no compensation for our time and inconveniences, as we were told that they "took a loss on this one". We did complete their companies job feedback document but were told that that document is for internal use only. The result is, that they did rebuild our deck and gave us the stairway change we requested. However, the material and craftsmanship were not what we were told we would receive, or close. We documented every day. As of today, the deck looks shoddy, not worth the high dollar we paid. We would never contract or recommend this company to do any other project. read more

We hired StL Design & Build to replace our deck, (which we were considering doing ourselves to save $) and thank God we did. I had my heart set on white composite because I was so focused on not having to stain the cedar deck every summer. After our free consultation we chose the Tiger Wood for the flooring, which honestly I was apprehensive about because it's 'red' and I had my heart set on a lighter tone. (Important to know for later) and white aluminum railings. Fortunately they were able to start a little earlier than expected! Yay! Louis and his guys showed up each morning and knocked out some awesome work! I can't believe we ever considered doing this ourselves because the demolition alone uncovered issues we could never have imagined including more rotting wood and damage on the house that needed to be fixed before they could get started. But nothing slowed them down and they just kept working thru it all, finishing everything earlier then expected. The entire crew were all professional, respectful, and super awesome. So, the deck is completed, and it's Tiger Wood. Not composite, not what I was planning, but I'm happy it's done and it looks nice. Fast forward one month. I have to tell you, TIGER WOOD is frickin cool. I forgot to mention that my deck is full sun, ALL DAY. When it's 85 and sunny, my old cedar deck felt 100 and no chance could I walk barefoot. Now, I don't need shoes at all and I don't worry about my dogs on the deck! This really should be a bigger selling point on the Tiger Wood! Also, the wood fades in color, it's already a light beige but each panel is unique, it's quite original. When it rains, it immediately turns red, and as it dries, back to beige. I am so thrilled with my new deck. STL Design & Build's only downfall is that they don't know how to really portray their quality! They really do great work, communicate well with their customer during (&before&after) the project and offer quality materials with fair pricing. Anyone can SAY that! But STL Design & Build has proven it to me! read more

Signed contract in March 2022 - work started in late January 2023. The project took almost 2 month - I was originally told 2-3 weeks. One afternoon coming home from work, I found their worker-for-the-day passed out in his truck in my driveway with all of the doors to my house open - not just unlocked - OPEN!! I have no idea how long my house was left open to who-knows-what. He also left a real mess inside my house that he didn't clean up that day. Work on my bathroom sink took longer that it should have - once they finally completed it, they scratched up my brand-new paint job on the bathroom wall behind the sink and didn't even offer to fix it with the extra paint that I still had. Work was finally finished (decently) and I was told that I had a year warranty on the work that was done. I contacted them recently to come and check a needed plumbing repair that their employee installed. Got a call on the morning they were scheduled to come out from someone calling to schedule the appointment. I told them that I already scheduled it for that same afternoon - he said that he was not informed of that and he can come the following week. I said "No", someone needs to come that afternoon when it was scheduled. I later got a text that a worker was scheduled to come that afternoon at 2pm. No one showed up. I texted the guy who called me that morning about it and he said "I'll drop what I'm doing and come over" - what?? Was he trying to make me feel guilty for being upset that no one showed up? He came over, made an attempt to fix the problem but the problem still exists. I contacted him again and was told that, if they come out again, I will need to pay ALOT of money to have the problem fixed. What?? One moment I'm told it is covered under the 1-year warranty. The next moment, it is no longer covered. I do not recommend this company based on their so-called after-project warranty. Once your final payment is made, they won't care about you! read more

Very happy with the final results of my deck that STL Design built for me and my wife. This company and their contractor Grady went out of their way to make sure my wife and I was happy with our deck. They are committed even a year after the deck was built to fix things that were created from the weather heating up and freezing the material. Our bathroom was a complete teardown and rebuild into a handicapped access version, and STL Design and Build did a fantastic job. After the original quote, I wanted to make changes to the selected shower system, hand rails and other hardware throughout the bathroom for a more handicapped friendly version, so I selected and purchased what I wanted them to use and they installed it all perfectly. The teardown removed huge amounts of plaster, which had to be carried through the house, and not one time did I find dropped plaster in the house. My wife and I are completely satisfied with the workmanship and quality, and still comment on how nice our bathroom is. read more

We had a small bathroom remodeled in our 1950s ranch home. For the record, I have discussed all my complaints with the company. Pros: I like how the floor tile looks and they did a good job installing the vanity. Cons: The shower tile looks bad. They installed the schluter incorrectly - the tile is supposed to butt up against it and there isn't supposed to be grout between the schluter and the tile, the grout is uneven in color and level, the tiles do not line up in some places and are not level, the corners look bad, they did not clean up the tiles and left buildup in corners and on the ceiling. The toilet was broken during re-install and the new toilet (which I purchased) has a wobbly tank. They broke a handle of our faucet and I had to purchase a second one to get a replacement. The electrical outlet is installed upside down. They had to fix the shower head three times because it shot water all over the room and there is a hole in the tile exposed on the side of the shower head. They did not caulk anything except just around the window. Around the window, there was supposed to be tile and they 1st put vinyl wood without talking to us, and left real (rotten) wood exposed, 2nd they removed the real wood and installed more vinyl wood, leaving nail heads uncovered and no caulk around the outside of this frame. The owners had to come out and look because they did not believe me when I told them the installers had left real wood exposed, they kept telling me it wasn't wood or it was wrapped or it wasn't finished. We received no notice when they decided they were done, they simply left our keys in the mailbox, no final walk-through. The whole job was supposed to take a couple weeks but ended up taking more than 8 weeks. The owner tried to blame us for the timeline that we didn't have tile available, which is baloney. If anything, the installer wasted a ridiculous amount because he HAND CUT everything. He didn't have a tile saw. We realized the vent fan was installed incorrectly, they vented it into our attic. Called and was told that no, it goes to the gable. I had to send them photos to prove that it simply vented into the attic (against code). They came to "fix" the corners in the shower, where the tile was cut so badly it looks very uneven and grout was very deep. The installer put caulk, which did not color match, into the deep corners to fill them and my 5 year old could have done it better. It was an insult, he pretty much smeared it in and left large amounts of caulk smeared over adjacent tile. I called with complaints, they came out and sent a different installer who fixed holes left in drywall, venting and had to remove the caulk and redo it. This installer even said the shower tile looked bad and the only way to really fix it would be to redo it. They were supposed to send somebody to fix the uneven color and I have waited two weeks for a call, but I am pretty much done with them. The owner told us all kinds of things as excuses, like the durarock cracked and our tiles were too big and we didn't have enough tile (even though I drove 45 mins to get more tile at 9pm one night when they were estimating they would be short and they still had tile left over), none of which we heard or saw any evidence of during the actual work. He also told us the installer had some complaints against him and they wouldn't be using him anymore. Well, thanks a lot for giving him one last chance with our money on our bathroom. There were multiple times where they were supposed to be to work and no-show or supposed to be coming over to look at something and never contacted to set up a time. I am so disappointed and sad that we spent so much money on a job that, to me, really isn't done and sure isn't done right or professionally. read more
