Hands down the coolest bar in Kingston. Stockade tricks me into thinking I'm still living in NYC.

The atmosphere is what draws you in here, perfect lighting, nice big handmade bar, a couple of high booths, and a beautiful pressed tin ceiling create the warmth of the tavern. The cocktails, however, are what make you stay. The bartenders and drink master know their stuff inside and out, don't be afraid to ask for an explanation of some of the more obscure liquors they employ. Stockade is not a bar you go to get drunk at... but that's fine by me. The drinks are excellent, and thankfully you get what you pay for. Everything about this bar is perfect! The ambiance, drinks, food, music, bartender, waitstaff are all included! I asked the bartender for a drink that wasn't sweet. He came up with a Mojito but added bitters. It was wonderful. There is a small dish menu (not a full menu, just appetizers) that is well put together and pairs quite nicely with any of the drinks. So glad we went in. I get the outside button theme now that I know this was an old Singer sewing machine building. To the owners...well done! read more

Always an experience, the bartenders a super friendly, knowledgable and love their jobs. The drinks are to die for, the atmosphere is perfect for casual get togethers with just a taste of fancy. You see the professional office crowd as well as the band playing BSP dip in for a set break. If you're visiting this is a place you have to experience. Stopped in for a pre-dinner drink and was not disappointed (I found out about Stockade Tavern based on reviews.) It has an unassuming front entrance (we weren't sure we were at the right place) but inside is very nice/chill. The cocktail menu is great and we were not disappointed by our selection. Very friendly bartenders, happy to make recommendations and chat. It was quiet when we arrived (7PM) but I think they were gearing up for a larger crowd later on. Would love to go back if in the area again. read more

I decided to go in for a drink on Friday night. I grabbed a table and relaxed for about a half hour. I then i decided to ask the older looking bartender for a cocktail menu. She decided to I.d me( which i had no problem with). I handed my temporary I.D since mine got lost while traveling a few days before and she denies me. I showed her school photo I.D and another NYS outdoors license to confirm my name and birthday date and she still denies me. The whole time she talked down to me in such a degrading manor it made me feel unwelcome and really changed my opinion of this bar. I've been to the Stockade numerous times before and the older woman served me also. I'll be happily taking my business elsewhere. The drinks are to expensive, especially when you have the owners wife treating you like you're 15 and blatantly degrading you. read more

Went to the stockade last night with high expectations and when we arrived the place was moderately busy we sat at the bar and the waiter gave us a couple of menus and was very polite but that's when everything went down hill - We sat there for almost a half an hour no one asked us if we wanted something to eat the bartender had no social skills and was rude and dismissive and I had to make a seat and like I contact with him with horns sticking out of my head just to get him to come over when he finally came over it's like we were bugging him to have a couple of drinks immediately the excitement in great anticipation of this place had downshifted severely - we felt like we were inconveniencing him to make our drinks he took our order like a Burger King drive-through window - we gave him our order for drinks he walked away 10 minutes later he wasn't even making our drinks that were there for over a half an hour no one wants to speak to us I warn everyone thats over 50 years old not to go to this hipster bar it's obvious that they like to dismiss people that are over 50 that are not hipsters live by the hipster die by the hipster change your bartender he's an asshole ! read more

Jenny and Paul are walking encyclopedias for spirits and all related topics and they will take the time to share their knowledge. Walk in with an open mind and you will have a wonderful experience. If you're dead set on having a certain drink made in a certain way, they'll provide it but if you want to have fun, engage the owners or any of the knowledgeable bar staff and roll with it. My husband is a bourbon hunter. He loves to sample new finds and I have been having fun trying manhattan variations. I thought I wanted a Canadian Club Manhattan, light on the vermouth, and I ended up with the best RYE whiskey manhattan, with a good amount of vermouth, that I've ever had. Jenny said the vermouth thing is that no one ever refrigerates vermouth and it should be. And my husband had a great discussion with Paul about some new bourbons he hadn't heard of. I'd kill for a place like this in my town -- but then I'd probably be the town drunk! A high class drunk, though! read more

i've been to this place a handful of times, and every time i go, it's better than the last. besides the best cocktails, they have such awesome snacks that seriously make it the best tavern i've ever been to. try the sardines, or the pretzels. to die for. last time i was there, a three piece trio just happened to walk in and start playing for the entire bar. such an eclectic place. always a good time. can't wait to get back to the hudson valley to go again. read more

Great cocktail bar with an interesting staff dedicated to booze. No televisions. Cool dog. Gets really busy and becomes a different place Friday and Saturday night after 7 p.m. I like swing by for a couple on a mid-week night. Just a great place to talk and savor a good drink. After reading all the rave reviews of Stockade Tavern, my husband & I decided to have drinks here one Friday evening. We were underwhelmed. This is not a "super hip" place nor are the drinks "fabulous", unusual or distinctive. This is a very ordinary small town bar with uncomfortable seating and bad lighting. The cocktails are OK. As a vodka fan, I was disappointed to learn that no flavored vodka is available: None. What kind of cocktail bar does not have a full bar? My lemon vodka, straight up, was something I could've made myself and frankly, done a better job. It was just OK. My husband had a gin cocktail and was also disappointed. The drinks were not bad; just were nothing special. The bar menu was, frankly, overpriced with respect to the size of the portions. The owners are wonderful & we had great service, but this didn't compensate for the disappointing atmosphere, ordinary drinks and small portions. What I really disliked was that the owner's poodle is allowed to roam freely through the bar, poking his or her face into our laps and our food, which we found quite distasteful. I like dogs, but not in my crotch & especially not when I'm eating or drinking. There are dozens of restaurants & bars throughout Kingston & the surrounding areas that have equally good cocktails & are much more sophisticated and comfortable. read more

An open parking space right in front was too good to resist! I had this place on my radar and it obviously the fates had decided it was time. Definitely worth it even if I had had to walk a bit in the old Stockade district of uptown Kingston. Knowledgeable owners, interesting decor including the gold brushed tin ceilings (thankfully insulated unlike many that just bounce the noise!), and fascinating selections. I hadn't had a Sazerac since my last New Orleans visit (post Katrina) so the minute I saw that on the menu I ordered it. Watched as the glass was coated with HerbSaint. Got into a discussion over Peychaud's Bitters and how hard they are to find. Of course my speed in ordering the Sazerac cost me. As I continued to peruse the cocktail menu I found several other blasts from the past. I had a chance to see one created in front of me as the owner made a Pimm's Cup, delicately layering the cucumbers over layers of ice cubes pre pour. Assume he was using Pimm's No. 1 -- not sure if any other versions are still available. Only reason I didn't release the fifth star was that I felt the nibblies selection was a bit shallow -- didn't try any but then again wasn't enticed to by the menu. Nice to find a place where cocktails are savored whether shaken or stirred. read more
