Little disappointed that they really didn't do anything special for him like a decoration, etc. 12 of us had the NY strip steak and agree it was sub-par, the 2 who had salmon liked it The bill was divide among 3 credit cards, which was told beforehand and approved Each card was charged 3 times! After numerous phone calls and some distress 2 of the charges on each card were removed, but it took 5 days!! Wish we had been warned to expect that. Would have eliminated some stress. Went to a beautiful wedding at this amazing venue. This English inspired castle is the real deal with thick stone walls, dark wood and large windows. There are multiple bars and sitting areas Our hosts knocked it out of the park with their fabulous reception. . This was pretty much a black tie affair. So our only comment about the facility was the service staff. While some of the team was in all black, most just dressed like they were going to the local market to pick up milk and bread. A venue like this demands all aspects of the operation are appropriately managed. The staff was way underdressed with one person wearing a leather backpack through the night. First, we appreciate the fact staff worked on Thanksgiving. We thank them sincerely for that. For the review. We have eaten Thanksgiving at Stokesay for many years. It has always been wonderful. This year was horrible. Hospital food is better. No prime rib. Turkey was a shaped pressed Turkey roll thing..... no mashed potatoes... no homemade amazing stuffing. Price went up. Food quality and offerings went down. I get you cannot offer all the same things but then make what you do offer good. I felt so bad for the kids...the hotdog buns were burned and hard. The bread pudding was so dried out and a tiny little corner left with no replacement. Butternut squash hard and under cooked, yet chicken dish and beef dish so over cooked and dry it was inedible. Please mind you the staff were all working hard. But the food was just terrible. When I signed the bill and paid over 260.00, I was sick to my stomach angry. I wish I could have had the owners eat the buffet garbage served to us today. Again, I thank the staff for working. I will make different plans for thanksgiving next year for the first time in years. First timers here, seeing a show in reading so we chose to eat here before. From the moment we walked in the assistant manager Sherry was super welcoming and smiling. We entered in the wrong door and she met us and let us in anyway. We got there early and since she had some free time she gave us a tour of the entire building and gave us all the old information on the building. The food was awesome from start to finish and our waiter Sean M was also fantastic. She told us to come back in the summer time and we will definitely be back again! 15 years ago, we had visited Stokesay, and was honestly like eating in a mausoleum. Oh my, how times have changed on Mt. Penn! There was nobody else there, that particular evening. Except a waiter. It was ann odd experience that clearly showed that Stokesay was in decline. It almost felt Poe-ish, as if I was eating dinner in Rodrick Usher's dining room. Madeline? Is that you? How's the soup? Apparently, the change of ownership and the passing of time has removed its old ghosts and has purged the castle of all inactivity. We visited on a pre-Christmas Saturday night and, not being able to secure tables in the main (formal) dining rooms, we arrived early to secure a table in the Knight's Pub. Knight's Pub doesn't accept reservations, so we arrived at 5 PM. By 6 PM, it was absolutely packed. The addition of the Knight's Pub is impressive...stonework, with tall glass doors that give a beautiful view of the outside grounds, decorated with lights and a lit firepit on the patio this blustery evening. It is a well-executed addition to the theme of the castle, with great atmosphere, bar, and several TV's throughout the room. We did take a quick tour between placing our order and the arrival of food, and the building is as grand as ever. There are two dining rooms downstairs, a third in the basement, a tasteful wine-cellar that looked as if it was about to host a wedding rehearsal dinner, with 6 large circular tables set. In the second story, there is another private dining room, plus an area touted as a conference room. All are furnished with a carpet that seemed to swallow the sole of my shoe. Oh, quality. Additionally, a banquet hall has been added which looked quite nice. The food, in my opinion, was excellent. The wife and parents had fillet mignon, and it scored excellent reviews. My steak of choice was a NY Strip, which I thought was likewise excellent. Kids loved the chicken nuggets and spaghetti, for what it's worth. The menu seemed to have a fair fare offering; while tofu panninis were not evident as offerings, what was standard offerings seemed good. Unless you are looking for some sort of exotic bistro, you should be able to find something good here. The lobster ravioli also struck me as a contender for my next visit. Service was also quite solid. Timing of orderings, deliveries, drink checks and delivery of the check were all well done. We also met Paul, the manager of the Pub, and he was quite affable. He took the time to meet our family and converse with my mother, with whom he had spoken on the phone. No complaints about service whatsoever. It won't be another 10 years until my return.Reading has a good thing going here, in the form of the Knight's Pub. Stokesay has some good momentum, and is definitely purging the ghosts of the past. All the paninis are pre-made, so they had to scrape the cheese off to give us one we could eat. The windows are wide open in this heat, yet air conditioning still cools the massive room. Easily some of the most disrespectful management. I was told, when I called to make a reservation, that we did not need to make a reservation. I questioned that a lot, don't get me wrong, but I made the mistake of assuming the lady I was speaking with knew what she was talking about. Needless to say, we showed up and asked where we should go for the fine dining. We were told that we didn't make a reservation and NEEDED to in order to dine. Their website says reservations preferred on their fine dining page exclusively. We told them that we had called days in advance and their answer was "well, you still needed to make a reservation." Today was my birthday and my husband wanted to take me to a nice dinner. He called Stokesay Castle on Wednesday, and asked if we needed to make reservations for Saturday (today). The employee on the phone told him that their dining service is first come, first serve and that a reservation was not necessary. When we arrived today, we were greeted by a server walking by, who asked what she could help us with, and then proceeded to direct us to the Knight's Pub. When my husband realized where we were headed, he stopped the hostess and told her we were there for the fine dining experience. We were then told that we couldn't eat there because we didn't have a reservation. After we left, I called to speak with the manager. I explained the situation and that we drove 45 minutes to eat there. All she did was say "sorry" and then asked for my number and email stating "I'll see if I can get you a gift card." ... you'll see? Great customer service. And for the record, their website explicitly states "reservations are PREFERRED." This does not mean required. *UPDATE: never received that follow up call or email from the manager and never got that gift card they supposedly were trying to get for me. read more

I just attended a wedding reception at Stokesay Castle. Overall the venue was good and nice, and the ladies who watched over and ran the reception were very respectful and handled the evening very well. However, the bar had zero idea how to make a simple rum and coke. Rum and coke is supposed to be a mixture of the two not simply rum and a splash of coke. If you can't make this simple drink, that's pretty pathetic. This wasn't the only drink that was made wrong either. Also, the amount that was paid to have JUST the wedding ceremony at this venue was outrageous and to make matters worse, the head kitchen staff would not even offer us any to go boxes. If someone is paying an insane amount to use your venue for just a wedding ceremony alone, you'd think 25 cent to go boxes would be okay to use for the wedding cake the bride and groom paid for themselves. The disrespect at the end of the night completely turned me off and I hope no one else has to go through this. My advice to the next people that use this venue for a reception is be prepared to pay a shit ton of money to be bitched at when the night is over and bring your own to go boxes since that's too much to ask for after paying $17,000. read more

Very interesting architecture, beautiful views from the castle, and the even though we ate at the pub main dining room, I am definitely looking forward to coming back to try the pub in the summertime, and event he fine dining. Service was impressively fast, including drinks, appetizers, main course, and deserts; albeit, we arrived early on a Sunday evening. Upon completing our dinner, the gentleman who seemed to manage even gave us a grand tour of the castle; from the history of each room, to the dungeon/wine cellar, to the newly added editions, Stokesay seemed to go above and beyond to create the best experience for their patrons. I've been visiting Stokesay for over 3 years. The quality of food, service, and management decline each year. Tonight was my very last night at Stokesay. I order a NY Strip...about $30 comes to me raw,cold, although I ordered medium. The second ATTEMPT, would be better served as a griddle steak from IHOP, I have never seen a pre cut NY strip unless on a salad . The side dish, Brussel sprouts, raw, watery, cheap cheese and supposed AuGrautin". Total shit meal. Declined. $32 scallops served room temp with same "crappy" Brussel sprouts. Again, sprouts not touched. Long story short...for 2 adults. 2 apps....me, because I can't order a steak Bowl of OKAY soup for wife Room temp scallops entree for wife 4 drinks BILL: $100 before tip, and I'm still hungry because my steak was a HUGE FAIL. Not worth the food. Grab a bottle of beer and appreciate the views. Menu reads better than it tastes. Bar food quality. Cheap meats and food quality. Management offers a free dessert. This restaurant just reopened after being closed for about two years. But boy oh boy what a disappointment. If our recent experience is any indication I don't know what kind of future this place has. Not that Stokesay doesn't have a reputation that will get people curious for a while. The building is kind of a local landmark. It was built in the 1930s to duplicate a 13th-century English castle. And it still is an impressive-looking building. The two dining rooms are somewhat impressive too. One is more small and intimate and the other one larger and more open. You could still smell the varnish they put on the wood. And it does look regal. But the dining rooms aren't so special that you can overlook other things. Like the menu. It's overpriced. With stodgy and unimaginative selections that seemed geared for the post World-War II era and not 2009. We were going to order something but couldn't find anything vegetarian/vegan. And we soon learned that whatever you do don't hang out in the bar. You'd think that with such a building there would be a chill out upscale bar. But no way. It's barren, devoid of atmosphere with a lousy wine selection (Woodbridge wines???) It would take them just a few minutes and a few dollars to create some atmosphere. Set up some candles, have some music, some subdued lighting etc. But it's sterile with no vibe at all other than you want to leave as soon as you sit down. And that was all before the champagne incident. We were sitting at the bar when the bartender dropped an uncorked bottle of champagne on the floor. It sprayed six feet in the air and we got doused too. Well, it was an accident. These things happen. No problem. But at least they could have given us a round of drinks or done something considering we may have to dry clean our clothes to get the stains out. But nothing. All we got was a quick rushed apology and nothing else other than a towel to mop ourselves off. I've seen beers spilled at dive bars where bartenders would cover the drinks. You'd think they'd do the same at a so-called upscale restaurant/bar. I think it just goes to show the lack of attention the people here have put into many aspects of this place. I think the renovators thought they could just open this semi-legendary building and people would go there regardless of the service, the menu or the atmosphere. It looks like they may get some business for banquets and weddings because of the building's reputation. But unless things drastically improve I don't know if they'll get too many people eating and drinking there on a regular basis. read more

We held our wedding at Stokesay, and overall, it was a fantastic experience. First things first - the restaurant is beautiful. It's modeled after an actual castle in England, and does a very good job of simulating the experience. The décor, the giant carved knight, everything gives off a particular medieval, classy vibe that you can't help but enjoy. Since most of you won't be getting married here, I'll get right down to the important part - the food. Stokesay has some of the best food you'll ever eat in a restaurant. During our planning phase we had the opportunity to try the majority of their menu items..literally every one of them was good. You can't go wrong - but the steaks were my choice, either the filet mignon or the shoulder filet. Both were excellent, as were all the sides that went with them. I can't possibly give more praise to the chefs. As far as the wedding goes - most everything went smoothly. Our wedding was the weekend after Hurricane Sandy - luckily, Stokesay had no issues and we were fully up and running. The event director, Stephanie Tusky, is a joy to work with. Very friendly and helpful, which is great during a time as stressful as wedding planning (with the added bonus of a hurricane tossed in). Our wedding coordinator changed in the midst of our planning process; this was not ideal. However, through coordination with Larissa and Stephanie, ultimately we were able to get all of the kinks worked out, and they were willing to be more flexible than normal thanks to the circumstances, which we certainly appreciated. All in all, Stokesay is a great place, whether you're looking for a fancy dinner, drinks at the Knights Pub, or a wedding venue. An easy five stars. read more

This review is for the Knight's Pub at Stokesay Castle. To clear any confusion, there are now two restaurants at Stokesay. Traditional fine dining is in the front and the Knight's Pub, which is more casual, is in the back. Both are owned and operated by the same people. I tried the formal dining room a few years ago right after Stokesay was reopened and was rather disappointed. I've heard they've improved a few things so I will have to try that again and write a review. The Knight's Pub is a pretty cool idea. It has a casual atmosphere but very nicely decorated. They have a fire pit outside and outdoor seating, which could be great for the spring-fall seasons. It also looks pretty nice to view through the window in the winter. We visited on a snowy Tuesday evening in February, so it's not surprising that the place was pretty empty. In fact, there was only one other party in the restaurant when we arrived and they left soon after. That left us the only customers in the place. As it turns out, Tuesday night is lobster night! They had about a half dozen lobster entrées on the menu; all under $20. Also, it was half-price wine bottle night. Now that is a pretty cool idea. I don't know any other place that offers bottles of wine at half price. The only downside is that the wine selection is somewhat limited. Most wine selections are under $30 per bottle. One nice thing is that the manager was very knowledgeable on the wine selections. And friendly too! We started with the calamari appetizer which was excellent. I ordered the lobster thermidor and my sweetie had a broiled lobster tail with shrimp. Everything was prepared well and very tasty. The service was outstanding, but of course we were the only ones in the restaurant so I can't speak for the service on a night when it's crowded. All in all, my experience was very positive and I would highly recommend taking the drive up Spook Lane to this mountain perch. Even on a weeknight in the winter. If you are new to Berks County, or have never been to Stokesay Castle, it is definitely worth a visit. You may need your GPS to find it, but the site is very beautiful and unique. I hear they have live music or a DJ on the weekends so I might have to check that out too. read more

Foor was pretty good...plenty of it for portions, and our waitress was terrific. She is a new teacher trying to find a teaching job, but working hard here in the meantime. Atmosphere was very upbeat. This is our second visit to Stokesay Castle and this time we decided to try the Lord's Dining room for some fine dining. The experience here was MUCH better than the one at the knight's pub. The servers were much better trained and much friendlier. The menu was smaller, as expected, but the quality was way better. I had the champagne scallop soup and the crab cakes. YUM! Soup was creamy and the crab cakes were loaded with crab meat. I will definitely visit the Lord's dining room again. I attended a wedding here this past weekend. The ceremony was outside and was beautifully done. They had a good two hour appetizer and drink time. The appetoizers were delicious - prosciutto wrapped asparagus with a balsamic glaze, tuna tartar on toast, something awesome in little phyllo cups... and a fruit and cheese buffet. Couple the awesome food with awesome drinks and I couldn't have been happier. The inside of the reception room was beautiful as well. We had salad and hot rolls. Then I had the steak, tiny potatoes and green beans while my husband had the fish (we think a butter crumbed cod), some delicious spinach and cheese bread pudding/ souffle (we honestly didn't know what it was, but I loved it) and green beans. Then they brought out 4 homemade and beautiful truffles - dark chocolate, mango, peach and hazelnut. The cake was spectacular, but I am not sure that the Castle made it. I took my boyfriend to The Knights Pub on a Tuesday night for his birthday, and we enjoyed 1/2 price wine and lobster--it was really romantic and beautiful. Then a little bit later, our friends met up with us and we got a huge beer tower and were watching the baseball game jovially. At the end of the night, we were gathered around the bonfire pit with cocktails. The place is wonderful and flexible for any need (date night, family night, game night) because of the way the space is laid out. And the waitress we had was THE best -- super friendly, funny, and memorable. We will definitely be back! read more

Jordan the bartender was a great help, a positive employee and a good judge of taste. He made my wife some concoction that she thought was the best thing ever.
