We really liked this place. Went there for lunch and were able to sit outside on a large plaza right below the levee along the river. (The Riverwalk Art sculptures are right on top of the levee and are very interesting -- plus the river views were panoramic. You can see three beautiful bridges from the levee). Anyway, the menu is limited to appetizers -- the pizza was good, not great. Wines were mostly sweet and semi-sweet, but the pineapple wine was good; so was the Chardonnay. Would recommend going there just for the atmosphere. read more

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Dubuque for sure! The live music was great, super fun, with the musician taking all kinds of requests. Neighboring tables were friendly and everyone was bonding around the room. They have a great beer selection, and the cider they make in-house is really great. Very tasty and sweet, very apple juice-y. They have an old-fashioned popcorn machine to satisfy your bar snack cravings too. Staff were friendly and even the building is cool and feels very historic. We spent a lot of time examining the window displaying the old beer cans through history! The whole experience was a lot of fun. read more

One of our favorite places to go. We know it's a winery- but you've gotta try their food. Their flatbread pizzas are tasty and pretty large (thin crust). Every time I go, I get the chicken salad sliders- they are My favorite! We love hanging out here on the weekends, as it's quiet, cozy, and the wine is tasty! The wine was okay and the building/bar room was beautiful. However, the service wasn't great; there was a lady behind the bar who was drinking and laughing loudly and waited for other staff members to be free in order to help us; the lady who actually helped us the whole time was terrible! She hardly looked at us, didn't smile once, and was just very brief and cold. In addition, they don't have any tastings going on right now? We asked why, and they said they don't have it "figured out yet with COVID"...um, what? We're 14 months into COVID, and you're a winery, how do you not have tastings figured out yet? read more

We were here yesterday when two young women were working and the customer service was excellent. Neither the wife or I are wine drinkers and they were very helpful with our wine selection. We ordered our wines and they started a tab for us. We sat outside and they were very attentive to the customers making sure they were taken care of. The patio area is very nice. 5 stars for this night. Today was a totally different story. A man and an older woman were working. This time the gentleman served us but didn't ask if we wanted to start a tab he just took our order and had us pay. We asked about sitting outside and he said sure. We went outside and that was the last we saw of anyone. A table of four came after us and were there for dinner. They sat there quite awhile waiting for service. One of the women in the group had to go inside twice to see if they could get waited on. Finally the female server came out and took their order. Then as an after thought stopped by our table and another to see if we wanted another drink. Our glasses had been empty for awhile and I said yes that would be nice if we could get another glass. If you come here hope it's the two young women working and you'll have an enjoyable time if not good luck get served. read more

Not impressed. Service was slow in getting around to our table and then got our order wrong. Instead of waiting for new food to come out, we just decided to eat what they brought and move along. Wine tasting was...interesting. Definitely VERY sweet wines and similar to drinking fruit juice instead of wine. My wife (who loves sweeter wines) was put off by the syrup-like taste on many of the wines. Not a place we'll come back to in the future. Went on a busy Saturday evening but were able to get a table for four. The live music was lovely! Our server was super sweet and attentive, as well as apologetic when she got a little busy and left us to fend for ourselves for a bit. We got a bruschetta and hummus platter. Both were delicious! I love hummus and this platter came with three different flavors to choose from. The pesto hummus was my favorite. We all did the wine tasting, which was plenty. Five samples for five dollars and an extra flavor of the month at no charge. Most of the samples I picked were sweet but the strawberry rhubarb was my favorite. Overall great ambiance, wine and appetizers. I would recommend it and go back next time I am back in town. read more

Went for a work function and found it charming. (Maybe we should always feel that way when someone else is picking up the tab for our boozing and noshing.) Bar food was pretty good, interesting selection of beers, did not try their wines due to a touch of jet lag and a kind offer of a ride back to my hotel at an early hour. Somehow one can tell that this is an area that used to flood, and the massive dike will confirm it. If time permits, run up to the top of that dike and peer over at the mighty Mississippi. We were really looking forward to coming here. It was our last stop on a day of wine touring in the area. What a disappointment! First, it looks like a bar, not a winery. When we came in there was nothing that indicated they had tastings or what a customer was to do. It wasn't until we looked at a menu at a table did we see that they did tastings. They listed two dry wines and the rest were semi-Sweet and sweet. And when they say sweet, they mean sweet! Honestly, the sweetest wines I have ever tasted, (and not in a good way.). The Zin actually tasted more like simple syrup than wine. Others tasted like cough medicine. Among the four of us, I don't think any of us finished each of the tastings. I don't remember a time I've left a winery without buying a bottle.....or a case......until today. Left empty handed. One positive, they have popcorn. Weird to go with wine tastings, but it was the highlight. read more

I'm not sure what all the complaining is about from other reviewers, but Stone Cliff is tops. In the past I have been here for, well, primarily drinking, but most recently I was invited to a wedding here. It was a lovely venue. The wine (moscato for me!) was flowing all night long. And props for them serving in appropriate stemware, and not tiny juice glasses or something equally annoying. The catering was from an outside vendor, but the entire set up was quite nice--the wine barrels along the perimeter of the room was super cool. My parents love this winery, too. They usually a have a few bottles of Stone Cliff on hand. Definitely stop here if you're diving through Dubuque and are looking for a unique side trip. And don't forget to pick up some wine to take home! read more

Yikes! Worst wine tasting/restaurant ever. First the positive - the service was friendly and they have pretty good popcorn. Luckily, because the popcorn was the best thing they had going and the only thing my husband enjoyed of his lunch. Now the negative - the wine. I've never had so many sweet syrupy wines. The had one decent Cabernet. The rest was syrup. I thought they might taste good over ice cream. Not alone in a glass. Next the food. Ugh. I ordered the Southwest salad. Palatable but literally dumped right out of bags and into the bowl...the lettuce, the cheese, the beans and the tortilla chips. My husband had the worst excuse for an Italian cheese steak. It came with pesto, which my husband asked them to leave off, but they didn't. He tried to get 1/2 the sandwich down so he didn't have to send it back, but couldn't. We ask for just a 1/2 without pesto this time and they bring it. It was actually better with the pesto. The seasoning and the meat they used was not edible. It was barely room temperature. Since my husband can be a bit picky and I'm not, I tried it. But I had to spit it out. Disgusting fat, horrible flavor and practically room temp. $30 with tip later for 1-$5 wine tasting, a poorly done salad and inedible sandwich - my husband says I don't get to pick the next restaurant anymore. I highly recommend you don't waste your time and money here. read more

The wine here at this winery is just too sweet! I tried some other wines in the area at other wineries and they just tasted better! Granted to tour at a winery is always fun but the Cranberry wine that I had here tasted like their was a great deal of sugar added and it just was not astounding at all. I know this area in Iowa specializes in sweet wines and I found ones at other places that were sweet of course but also tasted more natural. Maybe my selection of Cranberry was a poor choice but unfortunately I felt like I got a real mediocre tasting wine. read more

We stumbled up this place as we entered the building that used to house the Star Brewing Company. As disappointed as we were to find the brewery was no longer there, we were equally delighted to find Stone Cliff Winery. Nice selection of wines, including a port that is apparently so popular that they won't have another production for 6 months. Disappointing, but demonstrative of their quality. The wine tastings are done like flights of beer, each in a separate glass and with generous pours. Most of the wines are too sweet for me (not surprising, since fruity, sweet wines seem to thrive in this area), but the Cabernet was excellent. Staff are super friendly, live entertainment was provided even on a Sunday, and although they only serve appetizers, the chicken salad sliders on pretzel rolls were outstanding. Came here because they advertised live music late afternoon/early evening on a Sunday. First of all nobody was drinking wine. Pretty much everybody was drinking beer. There were four in our party and three ordered beer. I, the rebel, ordered their cider. They make it right there! It was really really good! I gave tastes around the table and everyone agreed. They had freshly popped popcorn that you could help yourself to which was a nice touch. They had live music, as advertised. The guitarist was really fun and had everyone singing along. Though the atmosphere wasn't right, the liveliness and spirit of the patrons reminded me a pub in Ireland. Great fun was had by all! read more

Decided to stop by here after a weekend trip to Galena, IL. Wasn't planning on coming here at all, but just happened to be close to the border of Illinois. We are actually glad we stopped by as the Wine Tasting portion is definitely worth it. It was honestly ridiculously cheap and I forgot the actual cost, but looking through Yelp it appears it is 5$ for 5 wines. The wine tasting menu had about 13 wines and they are all on the somewhat sweet side. The average price is about $10 to buy a whole bottle as well, which we stocked up on a few bottles. The winery is in the Star Brewery building which from what I could gather is an inactive brewery. We came on a Fall Saturday in October 2015. There was a wedding going on in there venue space but their tasting room was open to the public so we headed in. The tasting room must have been where everyone from the wedding was hanging out in between the ceremony and reception because it was PACKED. We saw people there that weren't with the wedding though, so assumed we were still fine and found an open table and sat down. We sat for a few minutes and nobody came over to take our order or show us the wines so we went up to the bar to order/figure out what we were supposed to do. The bartender was SO rude and short with us. She told us they were too busy to do tastings and they were out of the first glass I asked about. We were so unimpressed we actually decided to leave. What kind of "winery" doesn't even let you do a tasting? I understand they had a wedding but clearly they knew this ahead of time and could have planned accordingly. Maybe better during the week or on a weekend that they don't have an event but this was just a glorified glorified wine bar not really a winery. read more

This bar is hard to locate, even with a GPS. This building has many stories... It would be great if relocated to the 4th floor to view the Mississippi River.
