I was visiting Portland for a few days and had to check this place out because I love shave ice…read more I've had shave ice at lots of places, including Hawaii, and I honestly have to say this is the best I've had so far! I got the guava and passion fruit flavors, and they were both so flavorful and refreshing. The condensed milk and Li Hing Mui toppings were amazing and made it even better. I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Portland. If you love shave ice, this place is a must try!

We were craving ice cream, and Zephyr popped up on Yelp. As soon as I saw their shaved ice and ice cream creations, I was intrigued. They reminded me of the incredible shaved ice desserts I'd enjoyed in Hawaii and across Asia. The shop itself is charming, with fun signage and a welcoming atmosphere. Every ice cream combination sounded tempting, but I finally settled on the chocolate pretzel and the orange creamsicle. Both were outstanding, and it's easy to see why they've been voted one of Portland's best. The staff were thoughtful and attentive, and the owner was especially welcoming. He told us he was a former bartender, which makes sense--every syrup is made in-house, as is the ice cream. That extra care and craftsmanship really shine through in every bite.

Lived in Portland for years and never had a reason to come here when there's so many other (glamorous) options, but now living so close I just think this spot is super, duper charming. Yes, the prices are higher than at other places and I'm not entirely sure why, but this doesn't really bother me because the portions have always been enormous here, it's super convenient to where I live, there's never a wait, the staff is accommodating about wacky requests, they take credit cards, and the customer service is sometimes above and beyond what's becoming the norm downtown (I showed up once a few minutes after they had closed for the night, but they still let us order giant sundaes anyway!). They serve stuff from The Ice Cream Machine (out of Rhode Island, and distributed by Sysco) so it's not homemade or local even - I don't think it's the most delicious ice cream in the world, but it gets the job done and sometimes that's all you need (side note: their sundaes are awesome here; they know how to pour. on. the. hot. fudge!). Do I think this is a destination spot? Absolutely not. Is it ever going to make it on some national "Best of..." list that will drive hoards of people to it? Nope. Will I seek it out when I move away from the neighborhood? Can't say that I will. But is it a perfect spot for those Back Cove/The Pocket folks within walking distance? Yep. It's nice that in the state's biggest, busiest, trendiest city there are still places you can safely, quietly walk to get some ice cream with your family and enjoy it in a pristine park across the street only locals really know about.

I just paid $9.13 for the smallest, medium ice cream I have ever been served AND by the most SMUG young ladies. I understand you can't give the house away, but the cost of the ice cream, the outrageous up-charge for sprinkles, the $.20 for the extra dish came to $9.13. It was my choice to leave the extra change as tip.... In total..... $10.00. I've seen child size ice creams larger than what I was served. Going forward, I will be taking my business to other local shops, like Sammy's Scoops or Twisted Swirls. Local businesses that truly appreciate my patronage. Thank you for being part of our community, but I'm done with Beals.

Gross Confection recently announced on social media they would be shutting down the bar/desserts service while remaining open as a bakery. My wife and I came here many a times for an end cap to the night for one last drink and delicious and beautifully made desserts. From times in their dimly lit space that gave off romantic vibes or even enjoying our desserts in the summer sun outside people watching, every time will be remembered. Timing worked out well and we were doing a staycation in Portland and knew we needed to add a stop here one last time. Thankfully we got our names in on the waiting list early enough Friday and got sat as one of the last tables. We each had one last phenomenal drink; my wife and Apricot 75 that had a great tart kick of apricot and lemon. While I enjoyed their Chai Fashioned which spelt like a chai but had that boozy bourbon warming you'd expect. Dessert wise everything sounded good as always but we settled on two. The Goat Cheesecake and Pineapple Cake. The cheesecake was the perfect sweetness without being cloying and the blueberry sorbet on top paired so well. The pineapple cake was moist and tasted so good we needed to scrap the plate clean. I'm sad that Portland is losing this amazing dessert space but glad it's not a complete goodbye since they'll operate the bakery still! If you somehow read this today and have the chance make it in for one last visit tonight before they close their doors!
