I will say it's a very soft ice cream and got melty fast so i was glad for my cup. I got a small which was actually HUGE! I got Oreo dough in kiddie size which i was looking forward to because I'm a cookie dough fan but sadly there were only 2-3 cookie dough pieces in there. It essentially was chocolate cake pieces mixed into vanilla ice cream so kind of disappointing. My partner got the blueberry ice cream which was actually true to taste! This was such a disappointing ice cream shop. I'm always so excited to try out new ice cream places and it looked liked plenty of people were coming from here (maybe there was a better ice cream shop elsewhere tho), so we decided to try it out when walking by. I got 2 scoops, strawberry and cookies & cream. The strawberry was extremely artificial and had no taste with huge chunks of actual strawberry in them. The cookies & cream I got was probably not even real ice cream and it was contaminated with orange sherbet because they didn't wash their scoopers in between orders. Beal's is legit. They have tons of flavors and the ones I sampled were good! This ice cream seems to tend on the creamier side, which I like, but isn't anywhere close to custard. The place is quite big for a downtown ice cream shoppe and there are a couple picnic tables and a dog park. The amount of flavors can be overwhelming, with a good cover of all the traditional flavors. I, however, had the blueberry topped pistachio. The blueberry had real blueberries and the pistachio had real whole pistachios. Having sampled the desserts and visited the shop, on a recent visit, my perception is mixed. The ice cream was not terrible but my experience with service seemed a bit inconvenienced. An afternoon in the Old Port means stopping into shops you've not yet experienced, and that sounds like a good time for me. We had a flight and some appetizers at Liquid Riot and then walked along window shopping when ice cream appeared in front of me...and as a proud chubby girl I said 'HELL YES', so we headed inside. Its location is the basement of an older building, which I'm a total fan of this set up. It was pretty nondescript - nothing standout or memorable. The teenage girls behind the counter were friendly enough, so we sampled a flavor then purchased said flavor immediately. We both got kiddie sized cones, which was plenty for us. I got the chocolate raspberry truffle (oh.my.gawd) and the husband got the moose trail - he was bummed out that there was only one peanut butter cup in his cone. It was a decent enough experience that I don't have anything bad to say about it, but it certainly wasn't memorable in any way. Smooth and creamy, so good you can make room even after an afternoon stuffing yourself with lobster rolls. A small location but has the nice feel of an independent shop. Counter was staffed by friendly kids (high schoolers?) willing to stick by us as we sampled. The flavors are better and more interesting than the standard fare. Beal's Ice Cream has been around for as long as I can remember in Southern Maine. They make a solid hard serve ice cream in an abundance of flavors and employ a whole bunch of local kids during the season to scoop and serve at the counter window with a smile! Some of my favorite Beal's flavors are grape-nut, coconut almond bar and pumpkin pie. Going to Beal's for a cone on a warm summer night is like going home. Aside from the ice cream, the memories evoked might just be even sweeter. The reason why I give Beal's 3 stars instead of 4 or 5, is that while I love the Beal's experience, over the past 15 years or so, other people in this town have been concocting gelato and new ethereal ice cream flavor combinations that have really changed the game. On the other hand, I would probably not suggest that Beal's do anything different. The grasshopper (like mint chocolate chip, but with oreo chunks added) is grrreat. It's creamy yet light-tasting. Then there is the Coffee Oreo, which could be the answer to all questions. Its coffee flavor is very rich and distinct (it's got a tad of that bitter sweetness); with this stuff melting in your mouth, you are done for the day. Those are my two favorites. The cookies and cream tasted like my freezer. The pistachio nut is better at Carvel's.
