In honor of blueberry season, I had to try the Maine Blueberry ice cream--and I have absolutely no regrets! My family and I visited Maine over the July 4th weekend and stopped in Portland to explore downtown after dinner. We came across this adorable ice cream shop, and even though we were already so full, we couldn't resist getting one scoop to share. Oh and on top of this, the girls working there were incredibly sweet and provided great service! The ice cream was incredibly creamy, packed with blueberry flavor, and not overly sweet, which made it even better. If you're visiting Portland, it's definitely worth stopping by! Stop by after dinner because I wanted something sweet. It was definitely a chilly day, but this ice cream was perfect. It was so fresh. After walking around for more than an hour, this was a perfect spot to get some delicious ice cream. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a beautiful small store, with some space to sit inside the store.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the other corner they have some store swags for sale. They had about 20 flavors in the menu. Three different cup sizes were available. The price was very generous, small for only $5.40. We picked the vanilla ice cream with m&m topping. Our whole family loved the flavor and texture of the ice cream. It was dense and really creamy. No icy patch in the middle. There were two teenagers at the register. Walking in downtown area and decided to pop in to get some ice cream. We got a vanilla with m&m. Very creamy and silky. Great flavor and portion. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A lot of people going in and out. Right off Commercial Street you'll find this ice cream shop, had to get one since we saw everyone walking around with ice cream cones. They had a decent selection of flavors, we tried their Maine Tracks and of course your originals, Vanilla and Chocolate. Decided on kid sizes since we just wanted to try it but the servings are generous which is a plus in my book. The ice cream itself was just okay but the kids loved it. read more

My review is for their food truck. We chanced upon their food truck at the Fitzpatrick Stadium while waiting for the Hearts of Pine soccer game to start. I was intrigued by the Banana Nilla Swirl which hubby also got. We got both orders in a cone. They serve the ice cream in a sugar cone which is nice. $6 was fair in a ballpark. The ice cream was delicious and we would certainly get it again. Didn't get a picture of the ice cream since it was raining :( Service was fairly quick though they did have a decent amount of people in line. Btw, they don't take cash at the food truck. read more

After trying lobster rolls all throughout the city a dessert it in order. They have many selections in icecream and different ways you can get it. I had the snickerdoodle and cookies and cream icecream sandwich. The cookie was still warm which paired extremely well with the icecream. Usually when I have this the cookie is hard and it's annoying to eat but biting into this was effortless and smooth. We walked by after dinner and saw the gorgeous ice cream scoops and massive cookies people were eating, so decided to wait in line and try some on our first night in Portland. The ice cream isn't anything to rave about, and we didn't even finish our cup of two scoops of ice cream. Workers are nice and service moves quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The flavors are prominently posted but what I noticed first when walking in was the wonderful aroma of fresh-baked cookies![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Had it been a cooler day I definitely would have ordered one (or more) but being that it was kind of hot and humid, we opted for ice cream. Today was an extremely hot day, Portland, Maine. Looking to try me ice cream. The storefront is very cute however it is small. There's nowhere to sit and no bathrooms available. When you walk to the ice cream shop, there are lots of people standing outside eating their ice cream. it would be nice to have some sort of seating somewhere nearby. If not in the store that's the only reason for the four stars. The staff was super nice. We both enjoyed our ice cream. We were walking around the old port the other day and saw this place and stopped in. The service was friendly and very accommodating to let the wife try almost everything. The place was very clean in appearance and while the Ice cream was good, the chocolate chip cookie was the best I've ever had I wish I had taken a picture but I practically inhaled them. The cookie was nice and crisp on the outside and the chocolate chips were melted into a gooey consistency of say a chocolate chip pancake on the inside. Outstanding. read more

Service was rude. Coastal Creamery does not let you sample their ice cream. That is fine if that's the policy, but how about putting up a sign to let your customers know? If there is a sign it's not big enough, because my family and I didn't see it. I asked to taste a flavor and was told VERY rudely, "We don't do samples" by one of the teenage girls last night. So, sorry to say but that ruined the experience for me. Ice cream is mediocre and too expensive. Not worth waiting in line. read more

Coastal Creamery is a great little ice cream shop. The service is okay. They won't let you try any of the favors and that is really unfortunate, so knocking a star for that. And really I should knock more stars for that. I hope management will change their rules on sampling flavors. They have such unique flavors but without trying them out first, it's hard to commit to a flavor! The vanilla and sea salt cookie are my favorite ice cream flavors! I usually buy some Oreo to put in the vanilla, so good! The establishment is cute for an ice cream place. The ambiance is alright too. read more

I got two scoops of ice cream. Coffee Oreo and peanut butter fudge. It was creamy delicious and GIGANTIC! Seriously enough for a small to medium sized family. Also got a heath bar cookie at recommendation of the girl behind the counter. It was soft and rich and the perfect complement to the cold ice cream. Cannot recommend enough. Was also fun to see them making the cookies and brownies behind the counter. read more

Coastal Creamery has a great selection of flavors, offer good portion sizes, and are located in a prime spot right on Commercial. I really liked their Coastal Cookie (blue chocolate chip cookie dough), and added on hot chocolate fudge--yum! However, I feel as though their interior is too-modern and sterile, almost like a hospital wing. Captain Sam's, who they took the space over from, had a certain charm that the current occupants can't seem to emulate. read more

It's cold and sweet and hits the spot on a hot afternoon, but sadly, we agree the ice cream is mediocre. My pistachio was pretty tasteless. Compare it to Ben & Jerry's which is delicious. My partner thought the salted caramel had too much chocolate. We wanted butter pecan but they were out. Also, $$$$! read more

I rate this a 4.0 nothing higher or lower. Was very easy to pick what you wanted, flavors are on the wall. Staff was nice, did feel like I was just being watched by everyone behind the counter. Mr. Creamery could invest in more flavors and drinks. I got a chocolate chip cookie sandie, I like the little chocolate chips around the ice cream sandie, but a little too much chocolate chips in the cookie. Welcome to Coastal Creamery! Our journey began in 2011 when we met while scooping ice cream at Boston’s historic Quincy Market. What started as a sweet connection quickly turned into a lifelong adventure, and in our wedding vows we even promised to “keep life fun, share lots of laughs, and always stop for ice cream.” In the spring of 2023, that promise came full circle when we moved to Portland to open our own ice cream shop. Since then, our roots in Maine have grown right alongside our family. Whether you visit us here in the shop, find us around town at community events with the Cruiser, or at our sister shop, Buzz Coffee, we hope to be part of your sweetest memories and traditions. While I enjoyed their Chai Fashioned which spelt like a chai but had that boozy bourbon warming you'd expect. Dessert wise everything sounded good as always but we settled on two. The Goat Cheesecake and Pineapple Cake. The cheesecake was the perfect sweetness without being cloying and the blueberry sorbet on top paired so well. The pineapple cake was moist and tasted so good we needed to scrap the plate clean. I'm sad that Portland is losing this amazing dessert space but glad it's not a complete goodbye since they'll operate the bakery still! There were a lot of delicious looking macarons, but I ended going with an almond croissant and a bag of tiny chocolate chip cookies to take home. Also a latte. The latte and croissant were great, but even better was the back room with extra seating, giving me and my companion plenty of privacy for our conversation. I am often so daunted by some of the squishy spaces in town to meet someone for coffee when you need to have a real conversation. Yuri's is not like that at all, plenty of space, plenty of sunshine, strong wifi and great food.

After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

When I got in, I saw the flavors listed on the board and tried a few samples served on a metal spoon. Since I was in Maine, I had to try the two blueberry flavors. I immediately fell in love with the Maine Wild Blueberry Crisp Gelato and asked for a small cup with that flavor. The Maine Wild Blueberry Crisp Gelato is comprised of wild blueberries intersected with a sweet and crunchy oat streusel covering and kissed by a scoop of vanilla. It was so yummy! My husband had the Netflix & Chill Gelato which is caramel gelato with brownie bits, peanut butter cups, and kisses. The small dish was $6.35 each and it includes a Maine restaurant tax. The next day, during the Portland: Old Port Culinary Walking Tour on Sunday, June 14, 2026, our last stop was The Gelato Fiasco. Funny enough, I was just here the night before. At The Gelato Fiasco, our group of 13 were able to each choose two flavors. Since I already had the Maine Wild Blueberry Crisp Gelato last night, I wanted to try some other flavors. This time I got the Ripe Mango and Thai Iced Tea. WOW! The Ripe Mango and Thai Iced Tea really tasted like how you would expect it to taste, all the flavors were there, but imagine it in a denser, silkier texture and a more intense flavor. I highly recommend checking out The Gelato Fiasco, you will not regret the smooth and creamy texture of the gelato. There are plenty of seating inside and outside.

I ordered a small dish consisting of a scoop of "Big Ole Peanut Butter" and a scoop of "Cookie Therapy." Both flavors were very bold which I enjoyed because I was able to really taste it. In addition, the cup size is a generous portion. Overall, this gelato place is a nice place to stop by for a quick dessert!

I think the only thing they lack is decaf coffee. We made a stop while downtown the other day and are so happy we did. Their space is bright and roomy with lots of seating and tables, with a chance to watch the bakers do their magic! The staff was really helpful with suggestions while we made selections. We enjoyed our treats very much, less the scone which seemed a little underdone. We will definitely be back, likely for a birthday cake!

When I lived in the Canary Islands of Spain I had a few guilty pleasures: topless beaches, red wine…read morethat cost less than €1, and gofres. Gofres are these smaller, sweeter, denser waffles that taste delicious with either a drizzle of caramel OR a drizzle of vanilla icing (like what you get on top of cinnamon rolls). I had gofres every day walking to Parque Marítimo. I haven't had ANYTHING like it since coming back to the States, and that's been over a decade now. Segue... The Marshmallow Cart is just fun. Good, old fashioned, fun. It's good for kids. It's good for drunken twenty-somethings outside of Fore Street bars. It's good for tourists. It's good for those of us with a sweet tooth who need a fix but don't want to spend a lot of money. And it's good for those of us who like the idea of s'mores, but maybe don't want to purchase all the ingredients to make them ourselves, because... let's face it... there's always half a box of graham crackers leftover (and seriously, what does anyone ever do with those?). It's run by a staff of fun-loving folks. And they've got fire. So, basically, it appeals perfectly to most people's inner child. There's only two things that prevent me from giving The Marshmallow Cart full marks: 1. Marshmallows are typically made with gelatin. Gelatin is typically made from animal by-products (think bones, skin, and tendons). I don't know (but would update this in a heartbeat if I did) if The Marshmallow Cart makes their marshmallow's with gelatin or if they're vegetarian-friendly and use guar gum, agar agar, or pectin. That being said, as a vegetarian, I'm not exactly rushing to get back here for this particular product. 2. THE WAFFLES ARE DELICIOUS. They sooooooo remind me of my Spanish gofres, but... The Marshmallow Cart doesn't have icing for them. I think the only options are marshmallow or nutella. Allow me a Veruca Salt moment, if you will: I WANT ICING. AND I WANT IT NOW. I would come out of my way for this if it was available. Maybe I should just start carrying my own bottle of it around in my purse? The point... if you like marshmallows (and don't have a plant-based diet), s'mores, waffles (sans icing), fire, and smiling... The Marshmallow Cart will not disappoint.

Scales delivered one of the best meals I've had in Maine. We were seated right along the window…read morewith a perfect waterfront view of the boats and fishing gear on the wharf below. It gave the entire evening that authentic, working-harbor Portland feel while still feeling polished and comfortable. We started with a crisp, refreshing local Belgian wheat beer that was light, slightly citrusy, and an ideal match for the seafood-heavy meal ahead. For appetizers, the grilled octopus was excellent -- tender with a proper char, beautifully seasoned, and full of flavor. It came with pommes dauphine, pine nut and espelette vinaigrette, and garlic whip. There was a light touch of oiliness toward the end of the plate (typical with generous finishing oil), but it didn't detract from what was otherwise a very well-executed dish. The dozen raw oysters were exceptional. All three varieties were local Maine and served ice-cold: Fare Well (Newcastle), Nautical Sisters (Yarmouth), and Weskeag (South Thomaston). I had them with just the mignonette and was rewarded with clean, sweet, briny flavor. These were some of the freshest, highest-quality oysters I've had in Portland. The main courses were the real stars. The Stuffed Lobster Frites was outstanding. The lobster was sweet and perfectly cooked, the claws were pre-cracked for easy access, and the tail was cleanly split with a buttery, herby breadcrumb crust that added excellent crunch and texture. It was accompanied by scallop mousseline and dijonnaise. This is a premium dish, but the quality and generous portion made it feel worth it. Equally impressive was the seared scallops, served in a cast-iron skillet. The scallops had a beautiful golden crust and were cooked exactly right -- sweet and tender. They were paired with crisp corn, applewood-smoked bacon, kale, and roasted peppers in a light, well-balanced cream sauce. This dish avoided the common issue of being overly salty. Every bite offered a nice variety of textures and flavors, and the cast-iron kept everything hot throughout the course. It was precise, thoughtful cooking. We finished with the Chocolate Silk Pie*, which was rich, silky, and deeply satisfying with lovely hazelnut undertones and a crunchy chocolate-hazelnut topping. The presentation was beautiful, and it made for a perfect ending. Service was attentive and professional without feeling rushed or intrusive. The pacing between courses was ideal. Bottom line: If you're serious about high-quality Maine seafood, Scales is delivering at a very high level right now. The ingredients are pristine, the execution is precise, and the waterfront setting (especially from a window seat) adds real character. This was easily one of the best meals I've had in Portland. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommended for seafood enthusiasts, special occasions, or anyone who appreciates a restaurant that respects its local ingredients.

Being a Bay Stater, I was looking forward to the brown bread. It never arrived. No one noticed. My server did not say anything until the end, where I was offered a free coffee and ice cream/sorbet. Insulting does not begin to describe it. The halibut ceviche was delicious. It was briny and salt and tasted of the sea. I loved it. The swordfish was rich, heavy, and overcooked. I am always cooking heirloom beans, so maybe that is why I did not love the beans. I don't think I even ate half of my entree. At dessert, my server noted the missing bread and offered a sorbet or ice cream. However, he offered after I had ordered the strawberry cream puff, so it seemed like it was an option for that, not an in lieu of offer. It was not clear until the sorbet arrived along with my cream puff. The strawberries had no flavor. I took a few bites of dessert and was over the whole experience. My server did clearly offer a complimentary coffee though, which again, was insulting. From what I can tell, the kitchen never saw the mostly untouched food, due to my seat the bar. The server placed my dishes below the bar. However, he didn't ask any questions about why I didn't finish the dishes, so it must have been clear to him. I do wish the kitchen had been informed as well. I have never regretted a meal as much as the one I had at Scales. I was looking forward to a delicious dinner with a few glasses of wine. Instead, I left hungry and sad. Scales is a waste of time and money. It's a definite skip in Portland.

I should have just checked on Yelp since one of my Yelp friends gave this five stars! I have to concur because I stopped her with my co-worker and my husband for a couple of beers and have to say two things: 1) they have a great beer list that rotates frequently, 2) the bartenders are top notch. You know sometimes you go to a cool beer place and it seems like the bartenders want to do ANYTHING but actually give you a beer in exchange for cash? This place is the opposite and it's wonderful. Very helpful with the beer list, suggestions, tastes, etc. They are also quick to offer another beer where as some places it seems like pulling teeth to try to get a beverage. It was lively but not slammed when I was there but I can tell these guys would manage great even if the bar was two or three deep with customers. Yeah, I thing the Mash Tun is one of the best beer bars I've been to and in a place like Portland that is in the top echelon of beer cities, that is an achievement to respect.
