The portions are pretty large here but so are the prices. It took a while to get the food and there was only one person to help out. All kebabs were tender, though I wish there was more to my plate then rice and kebab for the price I paid. They do keep it clean and honestly the flatbread is killer so you win some you lose some. We were told we could request more flatbread but when we did so, no more bread came, so that sucks. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this place! We came here on a monday lunch and it was completely empty until the end. We were immediately seated and handed water, warm lavash and butter. We ordered the Torghabeh Special dish for 2 people and the portion was huge! I think this portion is big enough for 4 people! The chicken thigh was the best chicken thigh kebab i've ever had. It was super juicy and flavorful. The koobideh was also super juicy and had really strong flavor that complimented the fluffy hot rice well. Out of the three meats, my least favorite was the beef filet, which is usually my favorite! Not that it was bad, it was really good! it's just that the other meats tasted sooo good it really outshined the beef filet. I look forward to coming back and with more people to try more foods! Pretty good Persian restaurant on the outskirts of downtown. They have a few parking spaces in a lot dedicated to the restaurant which is nice. It was empty on a Monday evening, with just a handful of people picking up to go orders. The restaurant had no music on which made it really quiet with no additional diners. There was complimentary bread, and I asked for the side of mint and onions as that's my favorite part of Persian restaurants. It was a little difficult to eat with the thicker bread, as I'm used to lavash instead, but still really great combo with the butter! Ordered the Torgahbeh for 2, which came with 2 huge plates of rice, koobideh, chicken (you can choose between breast or thigh) and a beef filet. Amazing food! I loved coming here as a tourist --not once, but TWICE in the span of five days-- in San Jose. Their original dizzi sangi (دیزی سنگی) is fantastic -- came in piping hot from the kitchen, and the meat and potatoes and the chickpeas tasted fresh and delectable. Service was fast and friendly! I also appreciated the casual but cozy interior decor of the restaurant, especially their traditionally styled doors. Tried this place for the first time tonight and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Ordered a Kerman Soltani kabob plate and a koobideh skewer and it was extremely bland. I mean, I'm not a fan of salt and would prefer my food on the lighter side of flavoring but there was absolutely none. Idk if they forgot to season it or this is normal for them, but I literally had to add a bit of my own sea salt (w/ no iodine). For those in healthcare, I know iodine is essential. We have both, so don't worry. The one tomato they gave me, was burnt, again w/ no flavoring. Ordered Kashke bademjan which was very rich in ingredients and filling at the same time. The highlight of the order definitely was their speciality - Mashad stone stew. This came along with sides of torshi ( mixed pickle) , Shirazi salad and yogurt with shallots and this definitely was stewpidly good!! The three stars represents the average grade because of service. The service was terrible. A table of nine diners were attended to by the one server while what appeared to bd the manager/owner sat nearby doing nothing to help. My husband and I adore Stone Stew. We actually had our court marriage party there four years ago. We love all of their kebabs- ranging from the chicken thigh, ground chicken, ground beef, and lamb chops. Their kebab meat is so tender and flavorful. How they get the meat so tender- I'll never know. Their saffron rice is decadent and oh so fluffy! I love to put a pat of butter in the middle of the hot steamy rice and have my way with the meal. So here's the thing, the location or restaurant is nothing to rave about BUT it's a hidden gem and quite frankly I don't understand the negative reviews. The service was good and I have no complaints about it because the lady was hospitable. The food is excellent in my opinion. I ordered the gorgan chicken and koobideh kebab and rice and it was wonderful. The seasoning and flavor on both kebabs was perfect and paired with the mast-khair it just was harmony. Surely, India is more than just curry; Japan has more to offer than ramen and sushi; and Mexico brings lots to the table beyond tacos and burritos--the latter of which isn't even really Mexican, but I digress. This brings us to Iranian (i.e., Persian) cuisine, which has been boiled down to just kabobs and rice. Not that there's anything wrong with kabobs and rice, but surely there's more to centuries-old culture than meat and rice. Fortunately, Stone Stew is here to up the game and increase one's foodie expertise. The Good: *Kashke Bademjan (Eggplant, fried mint, garlic, and whey) app is a must try. Reminiscent of a creamy yet chunky baba ganoush sans the smoky flavor. The creamy whey and fried mint really took this dish to another level by giving it a little crunch and some herbal undertones to combat the strong eggplant flavor. The complimentary warm barbari bread made an ideal edible utensil. *Their house specialty is their eponymous "stone stews," which is known as ābgoosht or dizi, which refers to the stoneware it's served in. These require diner participation to strain the liquid out of the stew into an accompanying empty bowl and then mash the meat, beans and veggies into mush. The combo of melt-in-your-mouth tender lamb and broth/veggie mix has a sweet and earthy complexity that's sublime. *Their meat kabobs (yes, I had to try) are actually fantastic, and I'm picky about my kabobs. The beef koobideh (ground beef) was tender and flavorful, but their Gorgan chicken thighs were exceptional. Marinated and grilled to perfection, they took "boring" chicken and made it sexy and delicious. *Décor is gorgeous. From the blue azure door to the faux stone walls, you really get the impression of dining in the streets of Tehran. The Meh: *Staffing shortages on our last visit made dining in a little weird. I guess they're primarily focusing on their deliveries as that's all the food we saw go-out on our visit The Ugly: *Neighborhood this location is in is a little shady but should be fine during most of the day. I found myself doing it again. I've been raving about this place for years, but only now am I reviewing it. About 2 months ago, I ate at this location for a weekday lunch. I was surprised that it was easy to get seated. Meal was delicious and service was great. I used to go to their other location, and I've converted many of my friends to eat Stone Stew. I'm reviewing their Torghabeh special dish delivered to our home. We always order this, and it never disappoints. The koobideh and chicken is perfect for the wifey and kids. Tender and spiced just right. I'm always the one having to eat the filet because it's either too beefy or spices don't mesh well for the rest of the family. I'm not complaining that's for sure. The Shirazi (cucumber and tomato salad) with yogurt compliments the meal well. They also provide one container of rice and plenty of bread even for our to go order. My wife did complain that we got more rice eating at the restaurant, but we could have ordered an extra dish with our Torghabeh and she may have forgotten. Regardless our family was well fed on this meal! I've been eating Persian food monthly since one of my good friends in HS (about 30 years ago) introduced me to the best place in the Bay Area called Maykadeh in SF. Go ahead look it up. Only 2 issues: Would be a lot better with lavash and butter since the barbari is generally dry and I highly recommend making sure the chicken skewer you get is the thigh meat because the breast meat is dry as hell!! I've been to this location of Stone Stew (downtown SJ) twice. Once last summer and last week (Oct 23). Both times the food was great (mostly keep reading). We went with a crowd and ordered family style both times. The koobideh, barg, and shish kabobs have always been juicy and very flavorful. My only complaint with the kabobs is the dark chicken kabob. It was very over cooked and dry. How to you mess up dark meat? We also ordered lamb shank with dill flavored rice and it was amazing, and so was the Dizi (or stone stew as the place is called). The ghormeh sabzi was okay. And they don't have the option to add meat which is very disappointing. Despite some negatives, the place is overall great which is why I gave it five stars. I just wish more people ate there during lunch. It seems that it's take out only. Both times we were the only guests eating in the restaurant and it didn't seem they cared about us much and we had to beg for service. They didn't even have the open neon sign on, as if they didn't want us to eat inside. But again, we enjoyed the food so much, that I won't take off a star for that. This small family-owned Persian restaurant was an amazing host for 22 colleagues and I in our Support Our City: Lunch with Colleagues program from SJSU's College of Professional & Global Education. Stone Stew was great in ensuring that the food was ready and warm when we showed up for our 1-hour lunchtime event; tables were beautifully set and the place was clean. We had pre-ordered a set menu of kubideh (ground beef) kabab, chicken kabab (breast and thigh), rice, tea, and the restaurant added assorted sodas, salad, bread, yogurt dip with mint, onion, and other herbs.
