Dr. Hyland is a professional, highly skilled and talented provider. A fractured tooth that needed to be replaced with an implant brought me in to see her initially. Since then, I have chosen to have my preventive care, as well as some periodontal restructuring, handled by Dr. Hyland. I was so nervous about having implant and tissue procedures done initially, but Dr. Hyland was able to put my mind at ease with her reassurance and caring manner. I can't believe how accommodating Dr. Hyland and her staff were. After the initial assessment at 8:40a of my toothache in the morning, I had to go to San Jose but with traffic, I was 45 minutes late for my 1:30p appointment. Dr. Hyland was so kind to wait for me for my tooth extraction and implant (her office closes at 2p on Saturdays). She and her assistant stayed past closing for me. I started seeing Dr. Yvonne Hyland about 4 years ago. Though not quite an emergency, she quickly took care of the reason I went to see her. Since then, she has addressed each of my dental needs by focusing on prioritizing what needs to be done first and so on. At the same time, she keeps in mind what my dental insurance will cover each year. I really appreciate that. Dr. Hyland is compassionate and works hard to make sure her patients are comfortable during any & all procedures. She is also a perfectionist, which is a very good thing for your dentist to be. I think this sets her apart from others in her profession. I honestly can say she has turned me from a person who feared going to the dentist into someone who is happy to stay on track to improve my dental health. Rude, rude,rude! Definitely I should have noticed the red flags when I made a dental appointment as it was more of an interrogation rather than your usual "Hi I would like to make an appointment." After giving details of my life and my husband's life almost from the time of conception I received a phone call from this incredibly rude receptionist stating I had given her a fraudulent phone number for my insurance company. Huh? My response was I will bring all of the necessary information with me to the appointment. As I walked into the facility I was not greeted with smiles or even a hello. After introducing myself the grilling began again. Where is your card? We can't do anything without a card, these numbers don't match what we are looking for, we don't take HMO's (of which my dental insurance is a PPO) so sit down and fill out the necessary paperwork as I glare at you all the time! I finally was pushed far enough and said "Apparently you don't value my business." No response from the rude receptionist. I then contacted my old dentist to send over any additional information that might assist in making this appointment go more smoothly but by then I had finally come to the conclusion that I definitely was not wanted as a client. I turn and walked out of this momentarily hell on earth only for the rude receptionist to say in a very sarcastic voice "oh have a nice day." Would I recommend this hell on earth dental office to even my worse enemy absolutely NOT! UGH! read more

Yvonne and her staff have figured out a way to make me not scared when going in to the dentist. As a kid, I had some awful dental experiences and was always afraid to go in and even tried avoiding an appointment. That's changed: Yvonne and her assistant have made me feel so comfortable and are always gentle when working on my teeth. They're very friendly, attentive, and patient. I really appreciate that Dr. Hyland talks me through the process and let's me know what I'll feel, it definitely reduces my stress knowing what to expect and communicating with me. I first came to this practice when it was in somewhat of a crossroads, as Dr. Turner left and Dr. Hyland was just taking over. When I found out that my already scheduled procedures were going to be performed by a new doctor, my first thoughts were uneasy. I had finally gotten comfortable somewhere, and the rug was being pulled out again. I could not have been more mistaken. Dr. Hyland has been nothing short of phenomenal. I could rave about her obvious attention to detail and relentless pursuit of perfection (even when the pallete she is starting with, is ahem, weathered). There is always the excellent set-up itself, relaxing with the waterfall and always stocked with up to date technology. First and foremost however, is the legitimate concern for patient's needs above all else. The needs of the patient always come first, which as simple as it sounds, is incredibly refreshing (much like hard-earned swish of rinse after a cleaning). This stands for the entire office as well, I haven't come across one person that doesn't seem truly vested in their jobs and the good health of all of their customers. Using the term "customer" nearly does them a disservice, as they are always willing to welcome you in as a family member to their practice. For the first time in a long time, I smile walking down the street without the slightest hesitation. I even smile walking into the dentist's office, an unusual first. UPDATE: Due to the Cease and Desist, and because we're being truthful and trying to warn others, we decided to retain expert help; a well-known and highly credentialed attorney specializing in free speech and anti-SLAPP, to help protect our rights and ensure this bully is exposed. After the above update, finally a response, though hardly constructive. I'm not sure which is more disappointing; the horrible way I was treated, or this dentist's pathological denial of any wrongdoing. Yelp did request I remove an assistant's name from my original review (a reasonable request as part of their privacy policy). After that, Yelp gave my review their blessing. I made further revisions for clarity, as by then I found out this bully was looking for any excuse to silence me. Many other users have found my review useful; a small consolation after this terrible experience. I tried to raise my concerns right during the procedure, but felt bullied into silence by threat of leaving the procedure incomplete (update below). During a later phone call, I also raised some of my concerns. I suppose bullies must live in a kind of denial; grasping for any technicality to excuse their terrible behavior. I posted about my experience to warn others, as is common practice on forums like Yelp. Other dentists respond to such posts professionally & truthfully. This one didn't. Take that as you will. UPDATE: Stone Valley Dental's first and only response to my previous review was to send me a Cease and Desist letter! In it ms yvonne chu-hyland's attorney demanded I remove my entire review or face a lawsuit. I believe in protected speech and mentioned an honest account of my experience with the dental practice to help people make informed decisions. And because she was apparently unwilling to address my concerns professionally, and instead resorted to bullying with a "cease and desist" letter, I feel I am morally obligated to warn others on every appropriate forum. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I have never had such a bullying, painful and awful dental experience my entire life! While extracting my tooth dr. yvonne chu-hyland was impatient and hostile to any questions. I feel dentists should keep their patients informed every step of the way because dental work is serious but I didn't feel I was treated that way. Halfway through the procedure she says 'I have only ten minutes to finish your procedure, my other patient is waiting'. While my surgery was incomplete - open & not even stitched up which obviously requires more time than that. I was on time for my appointment & had already waited more than 30 mins before she started my procedure I felt she was more concerned about her 'time' than my care. It was quite a painful procedure & I felt bullied. The bullying attitude made the painful experience even worse. I also felt she used an unreasonable amount of force on me when injecting anesthetic. Isn't the point of using pain relievers to ease a patient's pain, not cause more of it? Every time she injected pain killer I felt it was forceful and caused stabbing pain; not at all like my experiences with other dentists. Furthermore, the dental assistant working with dr. hyland was paying no attention to my treatment and cracking jokes. The same assistant's behavior after I canceled the rest of my appointments over the phone was very rude. All this made me feel as if she had no formal education, and I found out later that she hadn't even taken her RDA exam until months after my treatment. Using interns may be typical but here in this case it was troublesome to me. Before the procedure, dr hyland told me I have multiple cavities which would need to be filled before beginning my invisalign treatment. After all of the above, I went to a different dentist. My new dentist said that though I have some areas that may develop into cavities in the FUTURE, I have no cavities suitable for treatment NOW. I am going to believe the dentist who did NOT bully me. Finally, I noticed Stone Valley Dental practices pediatric dentistry. Based on the above, I would personally be terrified to leave a child in the care of this dental practice. If they will treat an adult this way, how will they treat a child? I think they should take a break and work on their practice and treatment of patients instead of yelp reviews & cease and desist letters. And my advise to them would be to treat people right and own up to their mistakes. Patients go to a doctor, or any business for that matter, and give them their hard-earned money as a sign of trust in them to get a good service & be treated right. They should respect people for the respect they get by putting such trust in them. They shouldn't threaten and intimidate people with a cease and desist but instead operate on truth & good morals. After this experience I read reviews even more carefully. It's a shame I came across such a place of business. I do not recommend this practice. read more

Over the holidays, I gifted my daughter a PPO dental insurance plan AFTER twice confirming with Stone Valley Dental those plans that they participated "in-network." Yesterday, my daughter visited Stone Valley Dental only to be told that she would have to return with "at least $75" in order to have basic cleaning. I later called Stone Valley Dental, was placed on hold and then forgotten! I telephoned again only to be falsely told that all dentists -- in-network or not -- would charge the same for this plan. This morning, I called the plan headquarters and was told that Stone Valley Dental mislead both me and my daughter and that, under the plan, basic cleaning is FREE when the plan member uses an "in-network" provider. As a 30+year Alamo resident, I am sorry that this relatively new, inexperienced and seriously uninformed dental office opened in my community. A Classic Case of BUYER BEWARE! read more

I sometimes go to the Hercules location, but Dr. Chu-Hyland is the best! The Stone Valley location is very modern, and feels more like a spa, and being somebody who hates going to the dentist, I feel like for the first time, I enjoy going to the dentist. We make family appointments and take the whole family there (2 kids, currently 6 and 3). Dr. Hyland is not pushy about treatments, so when she tells you that you need something, you really need that treatment! She has never tried to sell me extra dental work (realignment, teeth cleaning, etc.), which I greatly appreciate. I avoided going to the dentist for more than FIVE YEARS because I hated my last dentist so much. I finally gave in and looked for a new dentist and found Stone Valley Dental and I have not regretted it for a second! Dr Hyland and her team are amazing!! Highly skilled and always willing to go above and beyond to ensure her patients feel comfortable and safe. The dental assistants know their stuff and Dr Hyland does excellent work. In the few years I've been going to Stone Valley Dental, I've been back loads of times and every time was easier than the last (they give excellent advice for improving tooth care!!). I recently had my wisdom tooth taken out and not only was it an EXTREMELY fast procedure (once I was all numbed up, it took maybe 10 minutes from start to finish to remove the tooth) and afterward, she gave me advice on how to manage my pain, and I followed it to the tee. And guess what? I had ZERO PAIN. LITERALLY. ZERO PAIN. Imagine getting your wisdom tooth pulled and experiencing zero pain in the first 24-48 hours, which is supposed to be the most painful time! And anytime I had questions, I could text Dr Hyland and she responded immediately! I made my mom switch to Stone Valley Dental and I'm forcing my dad to switch too -- it's THAT good. I have had an amazing experience with this place since the first time I walked in to ask if they accepted my dental insurance plan-Delta Dental. Frances was and has since been extremely nice and helpful. Amanda is super sweet and passionate about her work. She does her work with a big smile and we always seem to have nice conversations while she does my X-rays or cleaning. When she talks to me I truly feel that I can trust her and knowing I'm in the hands of someone who loves their job makes me feel extremely safe. Awesome. I was referred to Dr. Hyland and could not be happier. She is highly qualified and skilled, explains and performs very complicated procedures extremely well. I have never been to a medical professional that spends the amount of time with the patient that Dr. Hyland does. This is not a turnstyle, corporate owned office like "insert city name here, Smiles". Dr. Hyland is a member of the community and Stone Valley Dental has that old school feel that is missing in so many businesses and medical facilities these days.
