We bought 9 yds of what they call their 'vegetable soil' the cost over $400 dollars. We waited to put the soil in our newly built boxes due to the weather changes. Once the soil was put in the garden boxes I planted my seeds and some older vegetables plants. After a month I thought it was quite weird that nothing was growing larger. In fact, the large plants I put in started turning yellow, it was like they weren't getting any nutrients. And my seeds never got any bigger than a snail size. I called stoneyard to tell them that I was having a problem with the soil and they told me that they could not help me because I ordered the soil to long ago and should've complained earlier. How would I have known? What? Seriously.. this place is a JOKE. I knew there soil was awful because I have an older garden box I planted at the same time with different soil and the planets were growing really well. BEWARE, do not buy compost from this place, it is the awful. read more

My review of Stone/Yard Landscape Center may be a bit different than the rest. Let me explain... I have been searching for a rock yard that sells river rocks by the bucketful (I paint rocks and have been told this is "a thing" and can choose my own rocks in some places). I had gone to a nearby rock yard and was told by a not-so-friendly-guy that they only sold river rocks by the bag. I thanked him and went to nearby Stone\Yard. When I asked the guy in the office (I wish I would have asked him his name, but based on a photo posted here, it may have been John), the same question, he told me that they did sell river rocks by the bucket but only "the ones up front in the cages". He quoted me the price. PERFECT! Those were the ones I saw as I drove in and perfect for my painting projects! I filled my bucket just half way because it was already too heavy for me to carry, and as I was walking back toward the office, John saw me, walked over and said, "That's it??? That's all you're getting?" I sheepishly chuckled and said, "Yeah, for now at least. This will keep me busy for a while." He shook both hands at me and said, "Enjoy. Have a nice day." Wait. What???? Was I understanding him correctly? "What? You mean I can HAVE these?" "Have a nice day!" "Really???!!!!!! Oh my gosh! Thank you so much!!! I'm going to paint you a rock with your logo and bring it to you!" "Aww, that'd be great! Thank you!" "No. Thank YOU so much!" In went the bucket into my trunk and I am thrilled to say these are the PERFECT river rocks. Beautiful. Round. Unblemished. Smooth. Ahhhhh.... I'm in rock heaven. So.... THANK YOU Stone/Yard Landscape Center, and THANK YOU John, for your extreme generosity and friendly transaction. 14 Years ago we were redoing our yard and I needed flag stones, gravel and stepping stones. After the rain storms this year I needed all the same and sand. These guys are great. I ordered it and it was delivered in two days. Customer service incredible, Staff incredible. Love this place but to be honest I hope the rain stops so I can order more gravel. Their employee who loads pavers and rocks into your vehicle was just leaving work at 10 mins. Till closing when I pulled into their driveway. I needed 12 high desert paving stones fast as I was in the middle of a project. This wonderful man stopped everything he was doing and came over to help me. He let me look through pallets of rocks to get the perfect paving stones for my path. Even loaded everything into my car and gave the receipt to the main office where I paid. He could've easily said they were closing, but he stopped to help me instead. I was impressed, and also thrilled to find high desert stone, which their competitors didn't have. My new place for garden rocks and pavers. PS-I was told they deliver for $100 if you have a load that's too big and heavy for your car. That's the price of a visit to an orthopedic surgeon; I figure the money's well spent it if I have a larger order next time as I won't rupture a disc in my back! read more

A++++++++ for customer service and price. I was calling around town trying to find some flagstones for our patio project after West LA Building Materials reneged on the price it quoted us. Gene answered the phone at Stone Yard and I asked him if they had the particular flagstone I was looking for. They didn't but Gene described something similar and offered to text me some pictures of it to "save me a drive over." WOW, really? Talk about customer service! He did text me the pics but because I wasn't sure, I did make the 40 minute drive to Stone Yard. The drive was worth it as Gene was super helpful and gave me some other tips and suggestions. And as icing on the cake, Stone Yard's price for the flagstones was almost half of what I was quoted at West LA Building Materials and Bourget Bros. It's rare to be stoked about parting with hundreds of dollars but I left Stone Yard a happy camper. read more

My bf and I were taking on the responsibility of turning my mom's water hungry grass front and backyards into a water friendly drought tolerant one. This is the biggest DIY project for both of us, and add into the mix the fact that neither of us has much knowledge with landscaping, and it's going to be a fun and frustrating experience. One thing we do know is that we wanted flagstone walkways for the front yard and flagstone pavers for the pergola in the back. We did a search and found Stone Yard, conveniently located within ten miles from my mom's. When we came to look at their large selection of flagstones, we were helped by Mario. We got quotes on prices, but were still deciding on what and how much flagstone to buy, so we left without buying them. We came back a few weeks later and made our purchase. Their prices are very reasonable. For $100, they deliver to a location within 10 miles of their store, which my mom's house barely made the cut. An additional charge for delivery is added to anything beyond 10 miles. They gave me some options for delivery dates and a 4 hour window. Our order came in two palettes and the amiable delivery guy dropped them off exactly where I wanted them---one in the front yard and one in the back. The entire process from deciding which flagstones to ordering to delivery was pain free and went smoothly. They have a great selection at a reasonable price. My boyfriend and I came here to buy enough Arizona river rock to cover 100 sq ft (17 bags). We we're impressed with how clean and organized their lot was. We were greeted by a man named Andy (very friendly and knowledgeable) who showed us samples. My guy and I decided to go with Del Rio pebbles, which cost a dollar less than the Arizona but looked similar. When we went inside to pay Brandon, Andy walked in and told us they only had 11 bags of Del Rio in stock. Without missing a beat he said to Brandon, "So what we'll do is give them 17 bags of Arizona river rock for the Del Rio price," then turned to us with, "Is that alright with you?" Talk about customer service. I thought that was a dead practice. We will definitely be back for a pallet of St. Augustine and a yard of mulch. It's a wonderful store, but they're not taking mask wearing by the employees seriously. I was in there this morning and two of the guys were wearing masks. A third guy who was standing behind the counter in close proximity to where we were placing our order did not have a mask. I asked him if he could put one on and he said he didn't have one. Great sign but terrible service and overpriced. We stopped to look at rocks for our garden and waited for help for a long while outside, wondering if the place was open...We almost left but thought to inquire inside and were told that only the outside rep with 'yellow vest' can help! When the rep in yellow vest finally arrived he was Super curt in his answers and after running around with his fork lift, told us they were out of the rocks we selected.... We drove 2 minutes down Lincoln to La Canada Rustic Stone and got great service with the same rocks at a much cheaper price!! read more

We have an excellent local compost source (not mulch, real compost) in Altadena. I called a number of different suppliers, and most did not have information concerning the ingredients, or how long it had been matured for (if it's not hot composted for months, it will burn your plants and deposit weed seeds in your garden). Stone Yard on Woodbury has excellent horse manure and stall bedding compost. It is properly aged, doesn't smell, and looks like deep rich dirt. I don't know about you, but it pains me to buy soil enrichment products in plastic bags: you're trying to do something good for the earth, and you are left with a pile of plastic which cannot be recycled. If you know someone with a work truck (say, your gardener) Stoneyard will load scoops into the truck with a Bobcat. My 8ft Toyota truck bed took 1 cubic yard, or two scoops, and it cost $50 a cubic yard. That's a very good deal. They also deliver, you would have to ask them about the cost. This compost is black gold for your garden, and makes a good top dressing for your lawn (if you still have one). Unlike chemical fertilizer which encourages short term rapid plant growth, but does not sustain the soil and the plants over time, spreading compost twice a year will make your garden flourish, and will enrich rather than deplete your soil. Stone Yard is a wonderful local business, the staff is super helpful, and they have all kinds of pavers, decomposed granite, and natural stone, gravel - you name it. They are also open on Saturday and Sunday, although the Sunday info is not on their website yet read more

Edit: I purchased 3 cubic yards of leaf mulch mulch two years ago and it still looks great. Also purchased flagstones (beautiful), sand, pea gravel and reclaimed concrete pavers. I made quite a few purchases here over a period of a few months. My experiences there were very mixed - some of the guys are great, and others were so unbelievably lazy, completely unhelpful, and downright rude. Many times I was the only customer there, and had to practically bribe some of the guys to get their help. Their prices are also high, and their math is often off. Make sure you go over your receipt with a fine-tooth comb before leaving. Or better yet, shop with their competitors in the neighborhood. After a number of negative experiences at Stone Yard, I finally researched other options and started shopping consistently with one of their main competitors, located on Lincoln Ave. I wish I would have done so much earlier. Look around - you'll find a much better places to spend (and save!) money. read more
