Not good and not bad...just meh. We had a short stay (nothing bad ) and i had the opportunity to try the food. It's just as you expect? Hospital food except it's a buffet style with a salad bar, pizzeria, and other great choices. Staff are exceptionally friendly. The cafeteria and seating area is spacious and has every selection under the sun. Breakfast was delicious, I had oatmeal with cinnamon, brown sugar, and granola. I also had a biscuit with gravy. Dinner was okay and switched it up between pizza, sandwiches, and other sides. The pizza is ehh and tastes like digiorno. The panini was OKAY. The mac and cheese was delicious. The dessert was also good. I had chocolate mousse, banana cream pie, and a lemon bar. For what it is, its decent hospital food. read more

I must say for a Hospital cafeteria Stony brook has a lot of quality options. Hot meals, salads, sandwiches, pizza, fruit and more. Very good breakfast offerings served as well. The cafeteria is located on level 5, the same floor as the main entrance and lobby. The food is pretty decent for hospital food but I prefer their breakfast menu over their lunch menu. Breakfast is served until 10:30am. They offer an omelette and drink combo for about $5. My favorites are toasted bagel with butter ($1.75), potatoes ($1) and turkey sausages (3 links for $1). They also have scrambled eggs but I found them bland. They have a wide variety of bagels (plain, everything, sunflower seed, asiago, etc) but they start to run out at around 9am. Being a medical student, I practically live in the Health Science Center/hospital, so I'm at this cafeteria quite a bunch. It is home to my favorite cafeteria Mac and cheese. It's cheap enough to ignore that it's yellow enough to be a school bus. Pretty much every section can be hit or miss. The salad bar is expensive so it's not worth it when the toppings are large cubes of processed meat. The half a chicken deal is a good one - great for starving students. The salad pizza is loaded with a ridiculous amount of salad. The rotating selection of soups (2 per day) is always a good bet. Oh and the desserts are RIDICULOUS. Not necessarily the best baked goods, but the portions are huge and covered in frosting. I'm a fan of stress eating the cupcakes. Also the deli next door makes some fantastic sandwiches. Disclaimer, I am a little biased since I probably spend around a lot of my meals here since I can't quite leave the hospital to get lunch. That being said, I am a fan not because it may be my only source of sustenance outside of Starbucks or ordering in delivery, but because it's actually a good cafeteria. Especially for a hospital. This cafeteria is more like a food court. There is a surprising amount of variety and choices. When you enter through those double doors you have so many choices, it may take a few laps around to decide. Here is a comprehensive map to get you through this busy cafeteria. From the entrance to the right, there is a huge refrigerator case of drinks, yogurts, to-go salads, sandwiches, puddings, occasional sushi, etc. This is the super fast, can't wait, I'm starving and will eat anything section. Decent choices to get in and get out with something to eat. Keep walking to the right and you will hit the fresh salad bar. I'm not sure how much it is per pound, but I have a hard time escaping this section without making a $9 salad. Fresh items but it can be pricey. And just to tease people, the giant dessert case sits directly across the salad bar with professionally made desserts that change daily which often include black and white cookies, canolis, sfogliaitelle, cheese cakes, creme puffs, tarts, pies, and various cakes. This is also known as the danger zone. If you have a little more time, go to the left where you are greeted by an ever-changing, ever-surprising menu. Pick up a cardboard tray and get going! They have their standard items: 2 soups of the day, mac 'n cheese, grilled cheese, mashed potatoes. The mac 'n cheese is ok. It always seems like a good idea but unless you eat it quickly, it turns into a brick mid-meal. Watch out. Their daily menu can be interesting. From cafeteria hospital "favorites" like spaghetti, roast chicken, stuffed shells to "whoa you can get this in a hospital cafeteria?" items like chicken tikka masala and naan, gumbo and stuffed tilapia. Sometimes this cafeteria really just steps up its game and provides new, exciting menu items. Keep walking to your left and you'll hit a panini section. They usually have 2 choices of panini sandwiches that are premade then thrown on a grill. I tend to stay away from these since they are huge and best eaten as two separate meals for portion control. Walk past the panini section and you reach the gluttony section of the cafeteria. Grilled or fried deliciousness from this section and open during late night hours. This is where you pick up made-to-order burgers (beef, turkey and veggie), french fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers. This is the bar food, late-night section of the cafeteria which sits next to the pizza oven area. The pizza is decent if you like ultra cheesy pizza. They also have a really delicious oxymoron salad pizza that tends to sell out fast. The main event is in the center of the cafeteria. This "Choose Your Own Adventure" section is always staffed by a very friendly chef that does it all, depending on the day of the week or time of the day. In the morning, you can special order your omelet with fresh ingredients. By lunch, you have build your own tacos, quesadillas, rice bowls, noodle bowls, etc. Not gonna lie, this is where all the action is at in this grand hospital cafeteria and the line can mimic new Iphone release day. Get there early (usually closes at 2) and prepare to wait. Behind this and next to the registers is the coffee, tea, fountain drink section. Most meals come with a fountain drink or a water bottle so don't forget. There is always food available to eat 24 hours a day in this hospital (I should know). The main cafeteria closes for about 2 hours in the evening and reopens at midnight. There is a grill around the corner that is open when the cafeteria closes. It has an abbreviated version of the hot items in the cafeteria and a pretty impressive deli that has definitely improved over the last year. They make great made-to-order sandwiches on fresh rolls. Overall, this is a great cafeteria whether you are visiting loved ones, taking a break from studying or working here. read more

YES YES YES My father was in the hospital for 7 days, and I was there all day every day - and mmmm I was in heaven. I mean, it's not 5 star restaurant but for hospital food it is delicious. Straight up, this place serves my favorite pizza on Long Island. I grew up eating the pizza here (since my parents work at Stony Brook), and remember that it was consistently the highlight of my visits. The prices are low due to the student population, and the quality is really impressive. The service is both kind and patient, offering smiles and advice to unsure customers. The place is also impeccably clean, which can be a relief since you're located inside of the hospital. If you have the chance, try something from each station. That being said, if you're strapped for time, definitely grab a slice of cheese at the least. Overall, I highly recommend visiting this cafeteria for the food, cleanliness and reasonable prices. Overall (2.5 stars): The selection of food is not half bad for a hospital cafeteria. The hot food is generally suspect but the salad bar and pizza station are solid. For some reason, the pizza here is not that crispy nor special in any way... yet is completely satisfying. Best food: pizza, deli sandwich, salad bar. After spending four years here, I feel a little obligated to rate our cafeteria. As mentioned earlier, you can get pretty decent food at the deli, pizza station, or salad bar. It's kind of hard to mess those things up. Sometimes the "special" station has pretty tasty options like TACO THURSDAYS (although they stopped doing that). Pricing is a little on the high side. Across the island, Northwell does a good job of offering employee/student discounts and additional discounts for healthy food options. What's a cafeteria doing on Yelp? I don't really know, but since it's here and since I'm there almost everyday I figure I should give my 2 cents. I've frequently ducked here in-between studies from the hospital library nearby. The quality is very decent and the rotation of food here is excellent, so much so that I find myself eating here rather than at the main food venues on the campus. Okay, that's probably a crime of convenience, but one day I had Swedish meatballs a la Ikea. I didn't know we could even review hospital cafeterias! Pretty good cafeteria for a hospital for sure. There are several different stations during the day at lunch time including a salad bar that changes daily, a grill area with beef/chicken/veggie/turkey burgers, fries, onion rings etc. a pizza area with very good pizza, a panini station with 2-3 different options, a soup section, a special of the day section and the hot section with a few different entrees and sides daily. The food overall is good- I haven't tried the flounder (I'm still skeptical about fish dishes at a hospital lol) but many of the hot meals are well flavored and come with good sides. They even make a surprisingly good chicken tikka masala! They are open for breakfast and dinner also and close for about 4 hours in the middle of the night (from 8p-12a) during which time only Starbucks is open. The deli is also great in the hospital, it's next door to the cafeteria and has bagels for breakfast and good sandwiches for lunch time. Compared to many other hospital cafeterias I've had to eat at in the past, this one is pretty good! read more

Love this cafeteria when I moved to Chapin. I was a weekly visitors here. This is a decent place with many selections. There is also a dessert bar but the problem was no server was there for you to pick the cakes for you. You had to wait and wait. Maybe they were lack of people. This is a decent cafeteria with quite a few options if this is your first time here. There's an area for all the code foods such as premise salads, sushi, drinks, yogurt/parfait, jello, etc.. There's also hot food sections, there's pizza(usually 2-3 different varieties), mozerella sticks, a burger station (beef, chicken and turkey are their only sections). There's also a station with typical hot foods that may change everyday but can include dishes like mashed potatoes, grilled cheese, a couple different soups (they usually rotate between 3-5 different ones, two of which include cream of broccoli and seafood chowder). They do have a dessert bar and an ice cream selection. They also have an open salad bar (measures by weight). I would avoid the eggs there though. Somedays taste like really leftover eggs. So even though they have such a large selection, it's still cafeteria food. Maybe 4 stars at best due in part to some dishes they do really well but I'll go according to yelps definition of 3 stars or "it's okay". They serve good food and it's better and cheaper than most of the food on the undergraduate campus. So even with the 3 star review... I still come here like every day... T_T read more

Never minded a trip to Stony Brook Hospital Cafeteria. It was always tasty and not expensive. I steered everyone I knew to a juicy grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and Swiss cheese. Add sweet potato fries and onion rings. The bun was thrown on the grill and cheese melted. Then went to one of the baskets filled with Kraft Dijon dressing. Always tasty and delicious Everyone who tried it was fast to tell me how good it was. One of the cooks that used to work there said they seasoned the chicken with garden seasoning My mom is here today with the flu so while she was sleeping in her hospital bed we went for lunch and ordered the same chicken sandwich as mentioned above. It was terrible. No seasoning on the grilled chicken and dried out like a bone. Now they only use standard honey mustard. The bacon has NO taste at all and the prices went way up !! How dissatisfied we were. However that's not the end of it. That night went back for dinner. I got a hot dog. Who could ruin a hot dog right. Looks like stony brook could ! I added sauerkraut that was dried out and yellow looking and red onions that was so stiff it fell off the hot dog in one big clump. My daughter choose chicken parm. Took one bite and that was it. I took a bite of hers to see. I could smell a box smell like it was a frozen dinner Went back and asked a few employees what happened to the food. All the answers were the same. " I don't know they cook it all downstairs " Well you ain't cooking for me anymore that's for sure. I've been here for two years up to today, as a grad student I don't always have time to cook and bag my own lunch, so I still have to grab some food there a few times a month. And they never fail surprising me how bad the food could be. The only few good stuff they offered (like burrito, which they offered almost every other week when I just came here) are gone over time which makes it worse. Today I ordered some beef stew over rice, so the lady gave me half spoon of rice and half spoon of beef stew, makes it a perfect kid meal portion. And within that beef stew, I counted, there were in total 2 small chunk of beef, 1 chunk of potato, and 5 pieces of carrots, and the rest 80% are the nasty sauce. I had two bite, finished the beef and throw away all the rest. Time to force myself cook some real food daily. BTW, maybe because I'm an Asian student that lady gave me these shit, IDK. read more

This place really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Been here way too many times when I needed to stay late in the HSC or was too lazy to bring my own lunch/dinner, so here's the lowdown: My best advice would be to arrive earlier for lunch/dinner when the food is fresh or choose from a full tray in which the food is more likely to be hot. It makes a pretty big difference for a lot of the main dishes. The chicken parm here is very good and much cheaper than what you would pay for at a pizzeria. Mac and cheese, while not the healthiest option, is also good and usually available. The grilled cheeses are WAY overpriced at $3.50 but they are still really good (but greasy), especially when hot, so sometimes I splurge and get one with some soup which makes for a nice, small meal. They usually have two soups...quality varies, judge based on appearance. The vegetable sides are always far from fresh and often luke-warm, but sides are only a buck and some change and at least they always have vegetables available. The "Indian" food they serve on Fridays in no way resembles Indian food but its still pretty tasty. I probably frequent the sandwich station the most--it's always available and they usually have everything, although sometimes its a bit of hassle successfully getting the attention of an employee to come over there. They won't warm up the sandwiches, but they typically give a very generous serving of meat (I usually opt for turkey), and have lettuce, tomato, and dressings/spreads ready. It's too bad there aren't onions but the sandwiches are still pretty good; if hungry pair with soup. Definitely one of the best values and healthy options, and one of the tastiest in my opinion as well. I usually go to the sandwich station in favor of the grill, but the grill does seem decent. The turkey burger I had there was pretty good, the fries are pretty good, and the onion rings are great, although they are reallllly greasy so I'd recommend splitting an order. Pizza here is pretty mediocre given the area but good compared to other cafeteria pizza I've had. I've had breakfast once, and everything was pretty much awful. Cold/bland biscuit, cold/fatty scrambled eggs, awful/tasteless grits (granted I came here from the South). So bad I never gave it another chance. One star here. Late night is where it's at. After midnight they open up again, and while the selection isn't as big, it's self-serve for the sides for the same cost as a side normally would. Nothing like a midnight study break gorging on mac n cheese to fuel an all-nighter. They also have a side full of premade refrigerated stuff (yogurt, salads, sushi, drinks, etc) and a salad bar which I've never gone to. Also always bagels and muffins available in the middle--tons of variety for the muffins and most are usually very tasty. Also fancy desserts available in the middle--the ones I've tried are incredibly rich, and almost impossible for one to down in a single seating. Still a fan though. The actual cafeteria itself could stand to be cleaned more often. Tables are often messy which is no fun and many don't balance well. FINAL VERDICT: I wouldn't want to eat here every day but it's a decent option every once in a while for hospital employees/students. Why am I even here, this is not where I usually work, I'm sooooo far from the city. Let's make the best of it. I guess when you are in the middle of nowhere Long Island surrounded by a University, a medical school and a hospital, the cafeteria better be on point! This campus is massive, I like to call it the Mall at Stonybrook, the main lobby is huge with a full service Starbucks as you first come in. If you want anything else you have to get in your car and drive or have it delivered, that's why I like working in the city, a good meal is always a walkable distance. Nonetheless, I'm here sitting in the cafeteria having a coffee. It's pretty big with many hot and cold food stations, salad bar is nicely stocked with all kinds of add ins. The hot foods looked appetizing, I did notice a lot people getting the baked mac and cheese, it looked really good! Fresh deli sandwiches, many desserts as well and a bigger than average prepared Kosher food section. I believe they close for a few hours in the evening, and then re open at midnight, which caters to the night shift crew, often times they are forgotten. As someone who has experienced both main campus and hospital campus food, I really have to say that I don't get the hype. Everyone says the food is much better in the hospital, but I find that I always end up getting the same thing. The hot main course table near the entrance is almost always mashed potatoes, chicken tenders, mac n cheese, and some sort of ethnic dish that never looks appealing (or even touched). The fridges are very rarely stocked with salads, sushi, or anything else that needs to be chilled. I've been to a ton of hospital cafeterias from NY to California and this might be the best of the bunch. The cafeteria is aesthetically quite nice with lots of walking space and doesn't feel too crowded even during lunch time. There is a ton of variety in the cafeteria- I've seen entrees as diverse as chicken tikka masala to pasta dishes in the hot food section. You can also get custom made sandwiches and burgers as well as make your own salad. The highlight of the cafeteria for me is the pizza which is consistently great. You can get two slices and a coke for 5 bucks which is a good deal. My only qualm with the place is that it can get pricey but hey, its a hospital cafeteria. Trust me, I'm not one to ever recommend hospital food, but this place has the best gluten-free pizza. I don't have a problem with gluten, I just eat these pizzas because they're so delicious. They have so many different topping combinations, I mean I can't even list them all. My favorite is the broccoli, sweet pepper and ricotta/mozzarella pie. But they have all kinds of choices. Not only that but they make this wonderful salad pizza. I'm not lying. They melt mozzarella on a flatbread and then you get heaped toppings of salad, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, mozzerella and then a balsamic vinaigrette. It's so good, and I hate salad pizza. The reason I'm using so much hyperbole here is because it's hospital food, right? So it should suck, but it DOESN'T!!! So if you're ever here god forbid, I highly recommend the Stony Brook Hospital Pizza Station (they sell regular pizza here too, and it's okay, but nothing great).
