It's very casual and completely open so a comfortable place to eat. Service is very friendly and accomodating. I was with my daughter and we were very hungry so we started with an order of garlic bread. I had to unfortunately return it as it tasted more like toasted bread, hardly any garlic! The second time they got it right! Tasty, tasty, seasoned perfectly and fresh out of the oven, piping hot! We also ordered mozzarella sticks. They were very good but the sauce I did not like! My main course was the Shrimp Scampi. The shrimp was extremely fresh and succulent, the sauce was prepared flavorful and delicious. The presentation on the plate wasn't the best, it looked kind of lonely but really made no difference, just had to mention. Maybe some garnishment or scattered parsley when plated might be nice. This was absolutely a perfect dish for me but next time I will order extra sauce. I chose the rice as a side and that too was very flavorful and delicious! I visited the Steam Room in the evening during the week after picking someone up from the ferry. Although it was late in the day there was plenty of seating and although all of the food options weren't available, many still were. The girl who served us was friendly and efficient and everything about our orders was correct. As we were finishing our meal, they started to close the glass forts and prepare to close. First off, let me say that I have been coming here for YEARS. I used to have a special needs girl that I worked with and this is her favorite spot. The seafood is delicious and I highly recommend the lobster roll; this isnt shredded mystery meat mixed in a lot of mayo on a bun too big or small, it's a perfect ratio of all ingredients with chunks of lobster meat. The workers are always kind and helpful, plus, they are accommodating towards special needs adults and speak to them like the adults they are. So respectful. There are a few options for seating. They have seating in the front viewing the ferry and water, you can sit inside by the walkup window in the front, or my favorite: sit on the sunroom! The sunroom has a counter and menu as well, plus, the roof opens up in the warmer months, and it is closed in the colder months so you can stay warm in the winter while looking outside! It's seafood, so the prices are seafood prices, I feel like it is decently priced. By the way, there's parking out front with the Frigate. read more

When we asked if we could order food to go quickly, the staff was helpful and told us the lobster rolls would be quick, so we ordered 2 lobster rolls and a clam chowder to go. (plus a Diet Pepsi, which was full of ice) The clam chowder was nice and the lobster rolls were good, too, although they were a bit small and I prefer toasted buns. The lobster rolls come with butter and lemon. Without them, it doesn't have much taste--especially the bun. The Steam Room was a good option for takeout food, but I think we would try other places for dining in next time. read more

Normally $30..and that's still a great price for the huge portion. We had a wide variety of seafood, and all was solid, fresh, and yummy! Alaskan crab leg clusters was generous portion, and the meat was tender & sweet. Seafood bisque was creamy & delicious. Soft shell fried crab, very good! Broiled fisherman's platter, everything was good but pieces of fish were really skimpy. My seafood paella was unbelievably huge, with plenty of scallops, clams. Mussels, calamari & oysters. I have been coming to this establishment for approximately 30 years. We had the same experience last year and I thought it was a one off. Last year my daughter ordered the pizza and as she was eating it, it had melted plastic on it. This year she gave the margarita pizza another chance and had the same experience. Melted plastic. Then my other daughter was eating her fried shrimp and said what is this? Yet another piece of plastic pulled out of the food. The waiter started out great, until he sat a table of 20. At that point we had zero attention. We brought the plastic to the attention of the manager. He took the goods off the bill and asked if we wanted replacements, but at this point I don't trust anything. In addition to this when I went in the women's restroom there was dog vomit on the floor. As a dog owner I recognized this immediately due to the full kibbles in the vomit. I am disappointed and disgusted with this service. 7-28-25. I've been here quite a few times over the years and there is absolutely nothing wrong with this place. Food is decent, service is decent and it's a comfortable, casual seaside setting. Nothing is overly fantastic. I've tried lots of dishes and they've all been o.k. My favorite is probably the linguini with white clam sauce served with garlic bread. Good flavor and the broth is excellent for dipping the bread. The clams taste like they came out of a can (but I like canned clams), and topped off with a few fresh clams. Stuffed clams appetizer is good, same canned clams though. Calamari is pretty tender and crunchy. Broiled seafood dinner is also good as is the Manhattan clam chowder, New England clam chowder and lobster bisque soups. Lobster rolls are pretty tasty as well. All in all, you get a decent meal at pretty affordable prices (compared to other seafood spots in the area). No dish is mind blowing but you'll leave satisfied. read more

Nice place for an outdoor lunch on a sunny day. Plenty of patio seating on a recent Saturday, maybe because it was slightly off season. Had the lobster roll and Boston clam chowder, both very good, I would stay 4 out of 5. Excellent, friendly service. No nonsense manager standing watch by the kitchen, always good to see. I am a native Long Islander transplanted to New Jersey. Wanted to bring my friend to Port Jefferson, and to eat at The Steam Room, where I have been dining for decades because of its fresh, delicious seafood in a perfect setting that offers a beautiful waterfront view. I ordered a sandwich with bacon on it that was iced cold, as was the toasted bread. He had a cheeseburger and fries, which he said was good. "Joe" greeted us at the door, and my guest thought him to be very friendly. The waitress, however, did not have much of a personality. Still, this remains an icon in Port Jefferson. My friend grew up close by and this used to be a favorite restaurant for seafood so she wanted to bring me here. The location is terrific as it's right at the port. We arrived late and no problem getting a table. It's a bit confusing as there are menus on the table but you order at the counter. I chose the shrimp salad with a fried calamari to share. My friend wanted baked clams which she sent back because there was no evidence of clams. I have to say the food isn't great. While my salad had about 6 good size shrimp, the flavor was lacking and the salad greens of romaine weren't special. Boxed croutons and pre cut parm cheese bits. The calamari didn't seem fresh and was served with salsa. Eww! Rosarita salsa from a big jug to be exact. And the tartar and cocktail sauces we had to ask for are all out of a jug as well. Shame in you for not making these simple condiments. The clams went back and she asked for steamed clams instead. After waiting for over 10 minutes, she went up and complained. Finally they came and after eating a couple, she was done. She said they were gritty. I couldn't finish the salad or calamari and had a bit of an upset stomach. The steam room is a must place to eat . It's nothing fancy , you can literally wear anything the ambiance is simple but beachy in a way however the food is fantastic! My husband and I ordered the calamari as an appetizer, then we each ordered the Alaskan King Crab legs which are usually $30 but they were on special for $20 can't even believe how cheap they were for how much food you get , we also ordered 1 beer, I soda and the rice pilaf , 2 corns and coleslaw as sides . It was all great , the service was really good . Our waiter as well as I'm assuming the manger came over several times to ask how we were doing , always had a smile on their faces . The check came out and let me tell you it was under $80 for two people that was one of the cheapest dinners we have had in a long time . The food and price were so good I would definitely come back here any day! Parking is a bit hard there's plenty of parking areas around but you need to circle a few times to find a spot. read more

I'm not sure why the reviews of the steam room were so low. We had a great experience there. I had shrimp tacos and my husband had a combo fried clams/fried fish platter. We also ordered an appetizer of ceviche. My shrimp were cooked perfectly and it was quite delicious. Two thumbs up for the fried fish/clams platter. The cerviche needed a little hot sauce but that's really it. Service was fast and dogs were permitted outside. All around it was a very positive experience. I would definitely come back. Stopped at this place for breakfast. It was horrible. There were no other customers, that should of been a clue but it was early so I thought maybe just a time of day thing. No, and with no one else there the service was so slow. I had an omelette it was flat, the meats were all cut flat. The flavor was not good. I don't think it was even a half inch thick. It was like something you would get in a school cafeteria. The toast was plain no butter the home fries seemed as is they were out a a bag frozen. The wait staff was handling the dogs bowls then touching the credit card machine and serving food. I didn't see anyone was there hands afterwards. Visiting from Las Vegas . Ok so let me start off by saying the views from this restaurant are amazing ! Port Jefferson Harbor and the Ferry right across the street are just beautiful. The restaurant is not that big inside but does have outside seating. They do have there own parking lot as well so you do not have to pay for parking. Unfortunately on the day we were visiting it was raining so we could not sit outside. There menu is large, actually larger than you would think. They sell all the fish you can think Of, but also hamburgers, pizza, nachos, yes nachos so you do have a variety. You have to order your food at the counter then sit down and they bring the food to you. The tables were not that clean neither were the chairs. I had them wiped down again. The prices are much higher than you would expect to pay. I ordered steamed muscles and clams and my hubby ordered a while fried fish. My muscles were good but many of the clams I could not eat . My husband said his fish tasted like very old grease. He did not eat the rice or veggies it came with he said they were tasteless and not good at all. The gentleman who brought us our food and drinks was very nice. I would not be coming back here, not for the money we paid for our food, the taste was not that great, and the restaurant could be way cleaner read more

Always a great time here at this longtime Port Jeff restaurant. Beautiful views and very attentive service. They always go above and beyond and treat you well. My New England clam chowder was very decent, and I enjoyed the baked clams also. The coleslaw was also good, finely shredded which I have never seen before, what a difference. Have always loved the steam room even as a kid, think at least 20 years! The nice part is that you're not gonna find fresh oysters for these prices anywhere. Usually we get lobster dinner, crab legs, oysters, clams on the half shell and on occasion the soft shell crab sandwich. Everything is generally very fresh. Our crab legs were a little over done this time around, but one or two times out of a lot of visits, I'll take it. They now have table service, which we don't really like. The whole point and one of the benefits is the cafeteria style experience, it's fun and messy. Also nice that you could just order whatever whenever and not have to wait for a server- or pay extra for one for that matter. Also to note, just bc they have table service doesn't mean this is first date food- unless you're very comfortable! We'll usually get a pitcher or two of beer as well. I can't say that this place is "bad" or has "gone downhill" but it has changed. My guess is catering to a different clientele or maybe they had some issues with people just sort of camping out at the tables and they were losing business because of it. You're legit right there on the water. The ferry docks right in front of the place, so it's always a great view to enjoy your food to. Overall it is fun to go to, nice to be outside and get good seafood at a fair price. Just know that this isn't five star dining, and don't have that type of expectation and you'll be fine read more
