    Lobster roll
    Kerri B.

First off, let me say that I have been coming here for YEARS. I used to have a special needs girl that I worked with and this is her favorite spot. The seafood is delicious and I highly recommend the lobster roll; this isnt shredded mystery meat mixed in a lot of mayo on a bun too big or small, it's a perfect ratio of all ingredients with chunks of lobster meat. The workers are always kind and helpful, plus, they are accommodating towards special needs adults and speak to them like the adults they are. So respectful. There are a few options for seating. They have seating in the front viewing the ferry and water, you can sit inside by the walkup window in the front, or my favorite: sit on the sunroom! The sunroom has a counter and menu as well, plus, the roof opens up in the warmer months, and it is closed in the colder months so you can stay warm in the winter while looking outside! It's seafood, so the prices are seafood prices, I feel like it is decently priced. By the way, there's parking out front with the Frigate.

    Lobster Rolls and Clam Chowder

We didn't have much time before our ferry and stepped into the Steam Room, which was a casual seafood spot conveniently located just across from the ferry port. When we asked if we could order food to go quickly, the staff was helpful and told us the lobster rolls would be quick, so we ordered 2 lobster rolls and a clam chowder to go. (plus a Diet Pepsi, which was full of ice) The clam chowder was nice and the lobster rolls were good, too, although they were a bit small and I prefer toasted buns. The lobster rolls come with butter and lemon. Without them, it doesn't have much taste--especially the bun. The Steam Room was a good option for takeout food, but I think we would try other places for dining in next time.

Affordable good seafood, cheap drinks, amazing specials..all with a view of Pt Jeff harbor. Been coming here forever. Will continue to. It is very casual, indoor/outdoor seating, and dog friendly (not my favorite..but people want to know) They have specials everyday on food & drinks! Mondays is Seafood Paella for $20! Normally $30..and that's still a great price for the huge portion. We had a wide variety of seafood, and all was solid, fresh, and yummy! Alaskan crab leg clusters was generous portion, and the meat was tender & sweet. Seafood bisque was creamy & delicious. Soft shell fried crab, very good! Broiled fisherman's platter, everything was good but pieces of fish were really skimpy. My seafood paella was unbelievably huge, with plenty of scallops, clams. Mussels, calamari & oysters. Took half of it home. Love the table service! Its a welcome addition. (Used to order & pick up from counter a while back) Watching the harbor sky colors change from day to night is a beautiful sight while enjoying a meal.

Plastic on the left from the pizza. The right is the fried shrimp.

I have been coming to this establishment for approximately 30 years. We had the same experience last year and I thought it was a one off. Last year my daughter ordered the pizza and as she was eating it, it had melted plastic on it. This year she gave the margarita pizza another chance and had the same experience. Melted plastic. Then my other daughter was eating her fried shrimp and said what is this? Yet another piece of plastic pulled out of the food. The waiter started out great, until he sat a table of 20. At that point we had zero attention. We brought the plastic to the attention of the manager. He took the goods off the bill and asked if we wanted replacements, but at this point I don't trust anything. In addition to this when I went in the women's restroom there was dog vomit on the floor. As a dog owner I recognized this immediately due to the full kibbles in the vomit. I am disappointed and disgusted with this service. We will be exploring other restaurants in the area moving forward.

We came back for more! They switched it up now, they sit you down, someone takes your order and someone else brings it to your table. It was nice and relaxing. I went with the lobster roll and my husband went with the coconut shrimp. All was good and delicious. I like the new setup.

I come here once in a while but it's always hit or miss, no wonder why they have low reviews. They have good service though and the restaurant is facing the water and the ferry

Food was ok. Seafood bisque was pretty good. Bread bowl was bland, but may go better with a different type of soup. Sat on patio and enjoyed the breeze off the sound on a beautiful day.

My friend and I had lobster rolls. Delicious! Not as great as the ones I have had in cape cod, Massachusetts, but this will do! The lobster is real, not synthetic like other places serve. Came out to $22 per lobster roll which is average price. Love walking around port Jeff. It's such a nice area particularly in the summertime. This place is dog friendly too!! And there is a dog beach not too far away.

My friend grew up close by and this used to be a favorite restaurant for seafood so she wanted to bring me here. The location is terrific as it's right at the port. We arrived late and no problem getting a table. It's a bit confusing as there are menus on the table but you order at the counter. I chose the shrimp salad with a fried calamari to share. My friend wanted baked clams which she sent back because there was no evidence of clams. I have to say the food isn't great. While my salad had about 6 good size shrimp, the flavor was lacking and the salad greens of romaine weren't special. Boxed croutons and pre cut parm cheese bits. The calamari didn't seem fresh and was served with salsa. Eww! Rosarita salsa from a big jug to be exact. And the tartar and cocktail sauces we had to ask for are all out of a jug as well. Shame in you for not making these simple condiments. The clams went back and she asked for steamed clams instead. After waiting for over 10 minutes, she went up and complained. Finally they came and after eating a couple, she was done. She said they were gritty. I couldn't finish the salad or calamari and had a bit of an upset stomach. I noticed that a group came in and they were able to get table service. Hmmm. No need to come back here except for the view.

I am a regular customer at The Steam Room in Port Jeff. I have never been disappointed with the food. My visit this time was Seafood Bisque Soup with an ice cold Stella. The dining room fresh with bright sunlight with beautiful water views. Our server was fantastic, knowledgeable, and as efficient as can be. I highly recommended The Steam Room for your lunch or dinner experiences.

Right across from the ferry terminal, with a great view of the port. We sat outside under a shady umbrella, ordered from the window, poured some water & waited for a waiter to bring our paella to the table. The fresh seafood options here were enticing. But I found the paella to be mostly watery tasteless rice. The clams, mussels, shrimp & calamari were pretty tasteless. There was some pepper on the table that we put on it and it helped a little bit.

Ask the Community - The Steam Room

If three of us go for dinner at 6:30 on Sept.1, will it be very crowded, have to make an 8 pm ferry?

You may know that the Steam Room is more of a fast food restaurant featuring seafood. At this time of year and of course the Labor Day weekend it will probably be quite busy. I would allow additional time

The restaurant was packed, but people were also finishing up their meals so we gave it a shot. We were able to sit outside and the outside dining area was set up really nice and comfortable with bistro lighting and even some potted palm trees. Felt more like San Diego than Port Jefferson. Inside was also tastefully done up in the nautical theme which is good to know if it's a rainy day or in the colder weather. I've read some reviews about the service and we had the exact opposite with super attentive service. Our server, Brianna came over right away and took our order in no time. I mentioned doing a dish gluten free and she asked if I had celiac. She went above and beyond making sure that my meal would be safe to eat and offered substitutions so there would be no cross contamination. I've had the condition for 18 years so I know pretty well what I can tolerate and that most places let you down and I just deal with it. That wasn't the case at all here and Brianna made sure of it. We started off with the spinach artichoke dip and this was one of the best versions I ever had. Like in the top 3 really and one the other two was home made. It was that good. I had plenty of carrots and celery to nosh on with the dip and they kept the bread on a separate plate altogether. Like I said, they really understood my condition I also had bariatric surgery back in the winter and I'm slowly venturing out in the world of solid food. So I picked the surf and turf steak and lobster sandwich. I figured I know I can handle steak if done right and I wouldn't be too bummed if I couldn't tolerate the lobster. Brianna had it served to me on a really good gluten free bun. This sandwich really worked out so much better than I thought it would. The steak was exactly to order and the lobster was super tender. I was only able to have maybe a fifth to a quarter of it. That's equally because that's all I can physically have these days and because the sandwich was beyond huge. The rest of the family's choices were home runs too and included a killer wedge salad, a perfectly cooked burger and salmon. Those were devoured so no complaints with those as well. It should be noted by the reactions by everyone at the adjacent tables were having a very similar experience and it was just a really enjoyable time. Our family is getting older (aren't we all), so diners and moments like this are so special. Castaways definitely held up its end of the bargain. I'm so glad we stopped in, and I can't wait to stop back the next time we're down port.
