I went in expecting a five star experience. My friend and I had brunch here previously and it was…read morefantastic. So ... we were on the waiting list for Schnitzels at 5 pm on a Sunday. They don't take reservations. After about 10 minutes my friend and I plus 3 teens (my kids and a friend) were starving and Schnitzels was loud and crowded. We headed a few doors down to Sweet Mama's. Seated immediately. My friend and I shared the steak with penne dinner special and a Cobb salad with grilled chicken. My daughter ordered penne with butter off the kids menu. My son got a turkey burger and his friend got a grilled chicken sandwich on a hero instead of a wrap. Now the good -- portions were huge! My son could barely fit his burger in his mouth and it also had a half avocado on it. They didn't skimp. Steak with penne was delicious and so was the Cobb salad. We all shared off each other's plates because everything looked so amazing. Now the bad. My daughter's pasta was elbows, not penne as indicated on the menu. Not a catastrophe but she was looking forward to penne. Then - my son's friend put some ketchup on his plate for his fries. It was ,.. not red but brown. The bottle had an 8/25 expiration. We are in April 2026. We told the server and she said it's because it's the "simply ketchup" with no artificial dyes. She offered him ketchup packets "with fake dyes" but by that point he lost his appetite for fries. We grabbed ketchup from another table, same brand, Heinz Simply. You can see the difference in color. We showed the server and she acted annoyed. I told her we didn't want anyone getting sick on that ketchup and pointed out the expiration date. She rolled her eyes and said "oh I'll just throw it away." She kind of had an attitude and didn't even apologize. So that's why 4 stars. We'd go back but request not to have that server. The food is fantastic but watch your ketchup! If someone put it on a burger it would have been ruined.

Not terrible, but also not memorable…read more Sweet Mama's is a hybrid concept tucked away in the adorable Stony Brook Village. On one end, ice cream. In the middle, restaurant, and towards the back, a bar. Surprisingly at 11am, for a table of four, we waited about 10 mins for a table. We ordered a variety of things, from soup, to bennys and a mimosa flight. The mimosa flight was very cute but mine ended up tasting just like white wine. The real disappointment imo was the Belgian Waffle. Now I know, part of this is my fault, for expecting more than what the description laid out. But for $12 I got one crispy and tender waffle with powdered sugar and that was it. No side of fruit, no home fries, nothing. Everyone else enjoyed their food, which I was happy about! And service was wonderful. But for $12 for one waffle, this place may be a biiiiiiit overpriced for my liking.

The steak looked thin when it came out but was absolutely delicious and tender and plenty for a light lunch for two. The waitstaff brought us two plates and knives to split the meal. I later had a regular coffee which hit the spot. The ambiance here made me feel like I was a regular on a tv show - it's cozy and welcoming. If I lived closer I'd probably be here every day! The live guitar music was fantastic. It wasn't too loud so we could still hold a conversation. Lots of booth seating as well as tables. We showed up around 4 pm and it wasn't too crowded but it got crowded later. The bathroom decor made me laugh. #iykyk Definitely a must visit for lunch, an early dinner or coffee. I can't wait to visit again!

I had the yogurt with blueberry filling, pineapple, and grapes -- it tasted exactly as it looks, clean and simple. The caffè latte used Paramount Coffee's "The Perfect" beans; the shot was dark and strong at first, but once mixed it became smooth with a slight bitterness. The chicken Caesar salad bun with onion rings had a simple, healthy flavor but the portion was a bit small. Banana foster was more like a dessert than coffee, with a strong cinnamon note -- the banana flavor was subtle due to caramelization. You can add espresso if you want. Downsides: despite the name, it's not a good place to study. A lot of people come to eat, talk, hang out, and play games, so it's not quiet. Price-wise, coffee and drinks are reasonably priced, and milk swaps or small customizations aren't heavily charged, but food portions feel small for the price. They have a restroom, are wheelchair friendly, and they mentioned they own a roaster nearby and plan to start roasting their own beans soon. Overall, a solid spot with good vibes -- just not for quiet studying.

Schnitzels Stony Brook, NY…read more@eatschnitzels Schnitzels is a German-American gastropub known for its awesome variety's of schnitzel, German beer, and pub fare. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serving up amazing meals at each. Choose from 5 different gravies and then your schnitzel. Traditionally served with pork or veal, but they do have chicken or eggplant as well! I went with the classic Weinershnitzel which is traditionally served with veal schnitzel and served with brown gravy. Lindsey got the Chicken Rahmschnitzel which is schnitzel topped with a creamy white reisling-infused mushroom gravy. Both were filled with flavor and we were very impressed! All schnitzel is served with spätzle, seasonal vegetables, and red cabbage. This was the definition of a comfort meal that. We started with their Bavarian Cheese Board, and classic German appetizers - potatoes pancakes paired with this insane apple butter, and potato dumplings with your choice of gravy. We loved the vibe in there. Great pub style feel but also nice indoor and outdoor eating. Our server Eden was amazing and such a great help! We truly loved this place and we can wait to go back! My visit was to get information about their Bridal Shower packages. As you walk in, my first impression was charming, no question this would be a perfect place for my daughters shower! Since Easter is next month, the restaurant was already decorated over the top for it! My supervisor at work has dined at The Country House during Christmas and no exaggeration, it is somewhere I could imagine you would see in a fearure film Holiday movie. Not one stone is left unturned, I saw some pictures and they were just beautiful! My appointment was with the owner, a very gracious man who obviously knows how to throw a celebration....detail, detail, detail!! You receive soup to nuts, the menu is superb! I was so impressed and excited, I wanted this so bad for my daughter, until he advised what the cost would be per person. Unfortunately for me, it was way too much over my budget, it was literally double the cost of anywhere else I have been to so far! But, I can absolutely tell you this, if I could afford it, no question my daughters shower would have been held at The Country House! I am going to absolutely dine here for an occasion one day, so I can review an actual experience next time!

This barbecue food truck has been on the Stony Brook campus since Fall 2012, and over the past few…read moremonths I've tried several of their sandwich and side items, with mixed results. I'll say 3 stars, but to be honest I'm feeling generous. - Pulled Pork Sandwich + coleslaw side ($6.50): This sandwich is pretty decent: pulled pork with a flavorful barbecue sauce served on a soft potato roll (presumably Martin's). It's basic, but the flavors should speak for themselves. I've always gotten it with the coleslaw on the sandwich, which has been a nice contrast against the pork. - Smoked BBQ brisket sandwich + coleslaw side ($8): As a sandwich, basically inedible. The whole point of barbecue brisket is to convert the tough, collagen-packed connective tissue in the meat into smooth, silky, tender gelatin, which takes hours of slow cooking over low heat. In this case, however, four of five strips of uncooked or par-cooked brisket were browned on the flattop, then placed on a potato roll and drizzled with sauce. Upon biting into the sandwich, my incisors stopped hard at the meat layer, unable to cut through. After a few more attempts from different angles, I gave up and disassembled the sandwich. I was able to tear apart the meat strips with my teeth and chew the muscle fibers with my molars, but it was (literally!) tough going even then. I left behind the 1 1/2 strips that were just unrendered slabs of fat. I guess the flavor was fine, but it was hard to focus on it with all the mechanical problems; my hands did smell smoky for the rest of the afternoon, so that's something. To top it off, the miniscule container of coleslaw I received on the side was only about half-full, containing at most 2 1/2 forkfuls of salad. - Baked Pit Beans with Bacon ($3.50): Had as a side with the Pulled Pork sandwich. Nice, creamy beans in a balanced sauce, but nothing spectacular. I didn't discern any actual bacon pieces, but maybe the sauce is made with the drippings. - Mac-N-Cheese ($4): Although the sauce was sufficiently cheesy and creamy, this suffered from the same problem that all standing pasta dishes have: over time, the pasta absorbs more and more moisture from the sauce and becomes increasingly mushy. The macaroni elbows in this were still solid, but pretty limp by the time I ate them; this is probably better earlier in the day. - Classic Pork Dumplings ($4.25): 5 generic dumplings, microwaved and browned up on the flat top. The browning wasn't extensive enough to add any additional flavor, though, so all I tasted was meatiness from the pork and a lot of saltiness (assisted by the ponzu sauce). I'll probably keep coming back here for lunch occasionally, but I think I'll stick to the pulled pork sandwich, and maybe the beans too if I'm especially hungry.
