Looking for a fun dining experience where you cook your food, then this is a place to add to your list. Having never been to this type of restaurant before, we came with seasoned veterans so as to not be confused and/or overwhelmed. It's a lot IF you have no idea how this place works. Here's the gist of it: There's BBQ and/or Hot Pot. You can do one or both. There's a set price for adults and children. It's all you can eat for your 60-90 minute time slot. For a slight up charge, you can get both BBQ and hot pot. Since this was our first time, our party focused on just the BBQ. You are told when it's last call for having the raw items brought out from the kitchen to cook. Appetizers and sides are prepared in the kitchen and brought out upon your request. We tried quite a few: sweet fried mini buns, fried shrimp shuami, fried pork goyza, and fried spring rolls. All were yummy! Each person can request up to five items at one time. That's harder to do that you realize. And they will keep rolling it out as you request. However, it's important to note that wasting food is frowned upon so you are expected to order responsibility to avoid unnecessarily just throwing food away. Stars of the night for us were the skirt steak, short ribs and pork belly with enoki mushrooms. The zucchini and large mushrooms were standout fresh veggies. Everything brought to the table was very fresh and flavorful because of all the available sauces offered including a make-your-own-sauce bar. Again, adding personalized FUN to this dining experience. Service was quick and our table area was clean. Because the restaurant was so busy we sometimes had to trouble catching our server to order more items and get beverage refills. But it was never overly long. The evening ends with a Hershey's personal-sized cup of ice cream or sherbet. Just one per person. You'll be so full so one is more than enough! We went for lunch. We have never been here and lunch is definitely your best bang for your buck bc you get hot pot and bbq for a cheaper price than if you went to dinner and got either or. I didn't take many photos bc once your food comes and your cooking it's slightly chaotic, in the best way possible. All of our food was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was so patient with us and explained everything. They change out your grill once it gets charred on food stuck to it. I've now gone to JBBQ with friends a couple of times now and everytime we have a good time. I have tried both the hot pot only, or hot pot & kbbq options, and honestly... just go for the hot pot option. The broth choices are solid, everything cooks quickly, and the ingredients for hot pot feel fresher and more consistent. The kbbq isn't bad, but the meat quality varies a bit, and with the all-you-can-eat setup, it's easy to over-order things that aren't as enjoyable. But with hot pot, you can add fresh veggies, good noodles, thinly sliced meats, seafood, and make your own dipping sauces. This is the move if you want hot pot. The time limit is sufficient for casual dining for say, 2-4 people, but for big groups, it may require some designated grill chefs and orderers to meet the time constraints. We wanted to try out a new place as we usually go to KPOT. You can tell this place is dated. They have masking tape on the booth chairs and the place definitely feels dated. Not a big deal but the food was very so so. The BBQ had this seasoning we were not expecting. I think it was a ton of cumin on all of the meats. Look, we like cumin but to have it on all of the seasoned meats was a bit too much. Service was a mix as our original server was very short and curt and tried to have us limit our order. She was extra blunt to emphasize how we would be charged if we had any leftovers. The good thing is, our servers changed halfway and he was fantastic. This was such a fun outing for our group of 5. We chose the AYCE option of both BBQ and Shabu Shabu on a weekend, which counted as "dinner" so we were able to get the premium options. It was a bit overwhelming for the kids (12 and 10), but the adults had patience, grilled all the meats for them, cracked their crab claws, and advised them when to put things in the pot and take them out. If you are doing both BBQ and Shabu Shabu, to start, you can choose 5 items across both menus. We ordered a LOT of food, and we ate a LOT of food. Tips: - The snow crab is good but not the star here. It'll get your hands very dirty and is a lot of work for little pay-off. Maybe focus on meats, and leave the snow crab behind. If you want seafood, the green muscles are excellent! - Communicate with your group. You're each going to order 5 things. If you all order pork belly you'll never finish it. Prepare to share! - Don't skip the sauce bar! This is the prime way to flavor your Shabu Shabu ingredients. You'll be blanching things in a broth; you want to mix yourself a sauce! If you're not sure what to create, ask the staff to make recommendations. Or, try this sesame-based sauce: sesame sauce, fresh garlic, and green onions. We're a group of 6 people, one person had been there before and the rest of us were clueless. We were there for the lunch for the "all you can eat". THE SERVER was also clueless; he couldn't handle explaining the gist to 6 people. His job clearly was to make sure to cut people off at FIVE items per order. Keep that in mind: You can only order 5 of the items on the menu at a time. It's summer in July; I didn't want HOT soup so I decided not to do hot pot and just do the 'bbq' part. Whatttt a mistake! I had FIVE items I was allowed to order. My friend (with experience) ordered both the hot pot and the bbq and orders 10 items right off the bat so he has a buffet of food in front of him. The guy was sweating the entire time trying to get the ingredients into the pot (separate the food trays from the others orders since the server just threw everything everywhere and let us figure it out), trying to regulate the steam heat and then bbq the other half of food-- and share the grill space with two other people. For my FIVE items I didn't want to just order meats (although it seems like the savy thing to do) so I got marinated short ribs, head off shrimp, spicy calamari, onions and zucchini. Trash. We decided to try something new after my son raved about this spot and arrived at JBBQ & Shabu Shabu in Smithtown. It's friday night, we were able to walk right in and snag a table. The walking in part, the shabu hits you all at once. The music is loud but the music is not good. It's more like blaring music that one would hear when you start at an escape room. There's a big bar to the right and a sauce cart to the right. Who knew there was a need for all these sauces? Peanut, Soy, Sriracha sauce and something else that is probably didn't try. Then there are the tables. Each table has a mini stove as well as warmers for the hot pots if you are choosing to go in that direction. Either way, the concept is simple, AYCE within 90 minutes. Meats, veggies, fruit and the timer is set when you sit down. My wife is not a ramen-hot bowl with a bowl of noodles type of customer. She was excited to try a bunch of veggies to grill as well as assorted proteins. To start, we ordered dumplings, shumi and spring rolls. The spring rolls looked different than what we've been enjoying for decades. They tasted fake and I wasn't a fan. The other starters were good, fan! Now we have to start cooking! They bring over a huge pot of Bok Choy that we laid over the entire grill. They tasted great as well as the huge mushrooms. The proteins, the short ribs and shrimp were star players. They have hot pot and barbecue and each person could choose around 5 things total from the menu at a time. You could mix and match it as well, for example choosing 2 things from the hotpot menu and 3 things from the barbeque menu. You could order more stuff later on in the 90 minute span (and you know I did). I was only interested in the barbecue so I chose different things from the BBQ menu. You gotta cook the meat yourself and I will say that the different meats we got such as the garlic chicken were well seasoned (received it raw of course, you have to cook it yourself). The different beefs that they have might be a little lacking in the seasoning department but being liberal in our usage of salt and butter, it was quite good. The server was friendly and explained everything well, making our first experience at Korean bbq an easy one. Servers were constantly walking by taking your empty bowls and replacing your burnt stove pans with clean ones. We probably had our pans swapped out 4 times in the span of 90 minutes and we didn't have to ask. They had a bowl filled with those little butters that you use to grease the pan before cooking the meats. They also had some sort of sauce station where I guess you can mix your own type of sauce so if anything is lacking in taste, I guess you can douse it in sauce. In particular, the beef tongue was very fresh and chewy. The marinated short rib was also tender and well-seasoned. Ratio of bone to meat to fat was very solid. The beef brisket was a little crummy but the marinated sliced beef was pretty good with a soy-based marinate that had some shaoxing wine taste. The angus steak was surprisingly tender without being overly chewy or mushy. The king mushroom, pumpkin, and cheesy corn were also good. Appreciate how the serving portions are small so you can try lots of things without being overly wasteful. Each customer is given 3 sauces - a semi spicy soy sauce, a sweet garlic sauce, and a spicy gochujang-like red sauce. The sauce bar is available to all customers and it has some appetizers like seaweed, kimchi, and cucumbers. We took an unplanned visit to JBBQ & Shabu Shabu when we found out that the original place we wanted to go was closed down for the day. I understand that this location is newer. It's located in a small mall with a huge parking lot, an absolute plus. The restaurant itself was also spacious and looked very new. We tried the unlimited BBQ and hot pot combo, which is about $35 per person for an hour and 15 minutes. The ordering was a little tricky since we began with five items for the barbecue and five items per person for the hot pot. This adds up to a lot of meat and veggies being put on the table initially! The barbecue items were pretty standard for what you could get at AYCE BBQ places in Queens. Galbi and bulgogi-like marinated beef along with some other cuts of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and veggies. The marinated short ribs (galbi) were the best out of the lot we ordered. Unfortunately, we really didn't get to order much more for the barbecue because we were so busy cooking up our individual hotpot items. I had the spicy base for my hot pot, which was rich and mouth-numbing (mala) but not so much that I couldn't eat my food. They have high quality beef tripe and lamb, which I was thoroughly impressed by. There were so many options for the hot pot, enough to satisfy everyone from really picky to very adventurous eaters. If you're the indecisive type, they also have the option of split-pot for $3 so you could get two soup bases in your individual pot. The only downside was that with the 1.25 hour limit, it is really hard to get a good grilling AND hot pot experience in. Our grill basically sat unused after the initial order of meats. The servers did offer to help us grill in the beginning, but with the placement of the grill in the center of the action, I can only see it getting really attention throughout if there was someone in the group who didn't really want to partake in the hot pot experience. I do think it's a great bang for the buck if you get the combo BBQ and hot pot, since the hot pot-only option isn't cheap compared to other AYCE hotpot places in Queens and the BBQ offerings are not quite as diverse. She is awesome with helping us cook our food so quickly so we can eat. This location didn't have a limit of 1 Angus beef dish like Bay Shore. You are limited to 5 dishes to each person. This might sound little but as you grill, it's sufficient and you can always order more. There is beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables including corn and cheese. There is a limited item for each section. My only issue is using butter to oil the pan since the butter runs out and you need to add more butter. It can burn the meat which happened a few times when we did not have enough butter. There is no dessert at this location which is fine since I was so full already. I was told to pick 5 items and that it included all meat and ready to eat like rice etc was not included. I won't go into more detail because the more she tried to explain it, the more confusing it got. The waitress was a blonde/gray haired girl. I didn't get her name but she tried. However what we were told was so inaccurate. We ended up having rice and some extras with no additional charging but it was confusing for us to want to leave. as someone pointed out. Veggies and banchan were not entirely included (you'd need to chose them as one of your five) I know this is JBBQ not KBBQ but some standard veggies on the side would've been nice. I think I'm spoiled because of going to queens but I feel like fish balls, tofu balls, rice cakes etc would be nice to have as a bar food but I know this establishment is smaller. Speak of bar food. The sauce bar was kind of gross. A sign that could be easily enhanced with a cricut was made up in falling printer paper. The bins under were supposed to be clean and had assorted food particles left including rice and what I assume to be the sub par kimchi. We used bowls from our table and didn't end up with enough space to eat our food. It would've been better to have smaller bowls for things like condiments and garlic/scallion and then plates or something for eating what we've cooked. I don't like the idea of having to eat off either a tiny plate or the plate raw meat came out in. You can tell the meat was fresh sliced from frozen which I haven't seen but guess I don't care about. I'd assume it's standard practice, it's just that it's usually defrosted by the time it gets to me. The spicy broth was a bit greasy and missing depth of flavor. The miso was good. We ended up getting some things we didn't expect like what I assume is a fish paste off of what looks kind of like a bone marrow bone serving utensil. The stick to serve it out was dirty but I used my chopsticks and tried it. Again, was never really clear on what was included. The pumpkin was thin, dry and sad compared to the big healthy chunks I've had before but my kid liked it. Overall decent meal but the ordering was overly frustrating and it's expensive if you're not looking to get the meat sweats and would actually like some included basic veggies. If you're here for mostly meat and rice and maybe a spot of corn and bok Choy or spinach and don't care about spending $40/pp for it then go for it. read more

Food was good. The servers explained how the system works pretty clearly. I found it very disappointing that I couldn't take the little plate of what I didn't finish home. It bothered me that they would rather throw it in the garbage than let me take it home. I can understand that there are those people that could easily pack up a nice full plate for another meal but this was far from that case. All you can eat meat. Need I say more?! Seriously. You pay one price and are allowed us much meat as your body can handle. There is a sauce table and appetizers included in this deal too. I personally love the spicy hot pot and so does my husband but he usually also opts to have the bbq option as well. The restaurant is nice and clean. I came in around 6pm on Thursday and did not have to wait for a table. I had all-you-can-eat BBQ. Meat options are so so. I ordered 5 types of meat/seafood, corn, some vegetables, wings and octopus balls. The ready to eat menu took longer time to be served than regular BBQ meat. In all the food I had, the only good stuff was Beef short rib, the rest: too sweet, too much fat or too chewy, specially the chicken was cut in very big pieces. I had to use chopsticks to break it smaller (wish they provide scissors like other BBq places). Staff that took my order was friendly. The staff that delivered food didn't bother too look at us while he gave food. He just tossed it on the table and kept walking. I did not get the ice-cream after finishing meal. I visited this place for the first time as part of a Yelp Elite event. The hosts were great, and the wait staff did a really good job of setting our tables, and brining us our food quickly. We started off with edamame, dumplings, spring rolls, shumai, takoyaki, and fried shrimp. All the appetizers were really good, hot and fresh. Then we started off with hot pot. We had so. much. food. We had thinly sliced beef, pork, fried bean curd skin, bean curd skin, tofu, broccoli, mushrooms, fish balls, fish tofu, udon noodles, lamb, chicken mussels & shrimp. The meat was very good and cooked very quickly. The spicy broth was just the right amount of spicy and wasn't too spicy. I just wish the pot was bigger! The dipping sauce bar has lots of great options for unlimited sauce combinations to dip your food into. They gave us a pre-made sauce that was very good. I think there was soy sauce, green onions, garlic & something sweet in the sauce. My favorite from the hot pot were the noodles & fried bean curd skin. You have to try it! Next came the Japanese grilling experience. We started off with short ribs, thinly sliced pork jowl, and some kind of pork tenderloins. We primed the grill with butter before placing our meats on the grill. Our grill was too hot to start with as our butter instantly turned brown and burned, but we quickly found the dial for our grill off to the side of our table to turn down the temperature. After that we had the Angus steak, chili calamari and marinated pork belly. My favorite was the thinly sliced pork howl as it melted when you bit into it and was refreshing wrapped in lettuce and dipped into sauce. Came here with some friends for dinner. One has had hot pot before, one was a virgin to this experience. We were able to sit down right away on a Friday. We did get there around 4pm, so a little early before the dinner rush. We all did all you can eat bbq and hot pot. With the hot pot, we were able to get two broths each. We went with original and spicy. I didn't have any of the original, just spicy. It wasn't too spicy, but it was good. There's a grill in the middle of the table, and then two burners for the hot pot on both sides of the grill. You get 5 items at a time each. So with 3 of us, our table got crowded quick! They do supply you with a cart to put things on at the end of the table. I don't remember everything they ordered. I ordered broccoli, garlic shrimp, mussels, garlic chicken, lobster balls and chili chicken. All delicious! My favorite is the garlic shrimp! There is also a sauce bar where you make your own concoction of flavor. You can go up as many times as you want mixing together whatever you want from the selections. You can be basic, experimental or go completely wild! There is a time limit. We got full pretty quickly due to the meal being 99% protein! Our sever, Jacob was absolutely wonderful. He took away empty plates as soon as they were empty so they didn't pile up and he refilled our hot pots with broth as needed. Also, at the end of our meal we wanted to split our bill. By accident he put the entire bill on my card. He came over and explained what happened and was extremely apologetic. He continued to apologize even when we were headed out. Plenty of seating surrounded by decorative shipping crates with inspirational sayings on them. If you've never had hot pot before, never fear! Your server will kindly explain the concept. But you came here for the food, yes? You do have options, hot pot, BBQ or both. We opted for the combo which came with 2 broths, 3 choices of food per person, and the bbq which came with also came with an additional 3 choices of food per person. Not going to bore you with our entire selection but our favorites were the miso broth, chili chicken, garlic shrimp and fish cakes. There is no dessert options, but, by the time you finish nibbling on a bit of this, a bit of that, there's no room!
