The self-checkout system is probably the worst of any grocery store in America. There's always a long wait while the people ahead of you fumble with the touch screen. When it comes your turn, God forbid if there's a malfunction. You can die of old age waiting for a sullen employee to come "reset" the system after its frequent freezes and mis-scans. They don't really give you an option. Typically only two registers are staffed with human cashiers, while all the rest are self checkout lanes. You can wait behind ten people with 100 items each, or you can subject yourself to the miserable touch screens. And what a fabulous deal for the supermarket business. CUSTOMERS now literally do the work of two employees: sorting, scanning, weighing, and bagging. You'd think Stop & Shop's grocery prices would reflect all the money they're saving on payroll. But no. It's not unusual to pay 20-50% more than at nearby Market Basket, where every register is staffed by briskly efficient checkers and baggers. Walk on by. read more

Ok, I don't normally review supermarkets. I like to review interesting, unusual, or particularly outstanding places that one might not stumble upon with out a Yelp review. A Stop and Shop supermarket is a little like reviewing the air you breathe, you kind of take it for granted. Its not really a discretionary purchase, its more of a reflex reaction, like breathing. So why am I writing this? I have been to quite a few Stop and Shops that I did not like. This one on the other hand is quite nice. It is clean, well organized and friendly. I am also a fan of this particular Stop and Shop because it carries a cheese I love, a Triple Cream Goat Brie from Woolwich Dairy. It's not exactly a rare cheese , but I'll be darned if I can find it anywhere else. I just picked up a supply for the next few weeks, but would love to find a place that carries this in San Francisco. If anyone knows of a store that carries it send me a message. So until I find an alternate supplier that wows me even more, this particular Stop and Shop earns 4 stars from me. read more

Even though many others don't like it, I am a HUGE fan of Stop&Shop. I find there stores to be much superior in technology than any other grocery chain, and even with the itty bit of higher pricing, it's worth it to be shopping in an up to date store that is clean and fresh. The one difference from one Stop&Shop to the next is the PEOPLE. Sure, it's always most ideal to go to the largest Stop&Shop with the most recent facelift, and even though this store in Lexington is older and in need of work, it's the people who work here that make this place what it is. Maria, one of the managers here, MAKES this place what it is. Kevin, one of the assistant managers from last year here as well was amazing too. Maria does everything she possibly can all the time to take care of her customers. She will go out of her way to make sure they are satisfied, happy, and going to come back to her store. She takes a diligent effort to keep the store well kept, well organized and the front end running smoothly. Sometimes, she even opens up a register if the lines are getting long and no other employees are available. She really lives up to (and exceeds the call of duty) for a front end manager. When I had an issue with one of the employees, Rose (who is not very pleasant), Maria resolved it immediately and went above and beyond to keep a long time customer. I don't live near Lexington and barely ever make it up this way, but need to recognize the outstanding service that Maria was able to provide, and she is the reason that I will come back to this store if I am in the area again. For just a review of the actual store though.... it's "beyond expiration date". Clocks broken, floor tiles broken and just a need of renovation. With that said, don't get the wrong idea.... food is not expired, and for that matter, they do a great job using their small space to the best of its ability and keeping the store tidy and organized consistently. Bathrooms are clean and the self checkout registers are brand new. Sure there is work for the maintenance team for future renovations to this place, but overall, it deserves to be recognized.... especially Maria. 4 stars. read more

I am a disabled person who exists solely on food stamps ($200 per month) and wellfare ($303 per month) who is temporarily staying with a friend in Lexington. I have shopped in many, many food stores in my area, but cannot always make the drive to another town to get food. I have shopped at Lexington's Stop & Shop, at 36 Bedford Street, at least 30 or 40 times since I've been in Lexington, and with a handful of exceptions, have been humiliated each and every time. Most of the cashiers have never laid eyes on a food stamps card and have no idea how to use one (it works exactly like a debit card). This has resulted in some incredibly humiliating circumstances, while cashiers yell from one to the other about "this lady with food stamps or welfare". Last night, I just came home and sobbed. Lexington is a wealthy community (I know because I grew up here and became a lawyer) but disability can cut you off at the knees and leave you penniless in the blink of an eye. Conveniently located on Bedford Street, it's a 10 minute drive from my apartment for a much wider variety of groceries than that of Trader Joe's (which is closer but much more limited). I always bring coupons and try to work the mobile scanners each time I come in, just to make the trip a bit easier. The staff at the self checkout lanes are always helpful, although the signature pads definitely need to be replaced at this point - I can barely sign my name on those anymore. Prices aren't too bad (compared to that of Hannaford's), and the scanner system is definitely a time saver when checking out. read more

This place never has lines and is better stocked with vegan and vegetarian foods than my local Whole Foods half the time if not more often. I walk here during lunch rather than go to the center restaurants often. Lines are short. The parking lot has a weird setup but always has plenty of spots. I find it an easy place to shop. read more

I went here to buy a frozen kosher turkey (I don't like any other kind, especially those injected with butter or heaven knows what), which was advertised at $1.99/lb--an excellent buy. The only "frozen" kosher bird left was a 17 lb one (it said "frozen" on the label and was marked $1.99/lb.). And did I mention it was in the fresh kosher turkey section and was completely thawed? Umm. Methinks there may have been something wrong with the refrigeration. Didn't buy and wouldn't buy it if it were the last turkey on earth. This place was recently renovated, but it was a mess and they're obviously having trouble differentiating fresh from frozen. Going downhill. Ended up getting my kosher turkey (fresh) at Trader Joe's...at a great price. Should have gone there in the first place. read more

Stopped at this store and was appalled by the amount of TRASH, broken windows, TRASH, bags, cups styrofoam plates, bottles TRASH on the edges of the property that this store sits on. Just awful! The town is all spruced up but this place looks like the local dump. How about a little pride and just clean up the property and the little adjoining park? The employees here are all pleasant, positive, and hard working. However the store is just not giving them enough resources. I'll often find almost all of the checkout lines empty, and only be able to use the (very buggy, very slow) self-checkout. They have one person who's supposed to watch every single checkout. Sometimes that person has to get someone ELSE to reset it. These poor workers deserve better. I have never had a negative interaction with any of them, but I've had plenty of negative interactions with their store. Hire more people, pay them well enough to do their jobs, and then maybe I can give it a better review. As it is, S&S's decisions to 'save money' have mostly led to me being desperate to spend more money somewhere else just to avoid dealing with the shitty system. read more

Stay away from this Stop and Shop. The cashier's inability to multi-task (bagging and processing credit card information) lead to my wife's credit card to never be fully processed, although she followed all of the appropriate steps on her end. Instead of remedying his own mistake, the cashier chose to cause an embarrassing scene and accuse my wife of trying to steal the groceries. My wife tried to explain that her credit card was approved by the machine and that paying again would lead her to paying twice, but the cashier was relentless in his baseless accusation. As a business owner in the town of Lexington, my wife was both distraught and embarrassed. Needless to say, we will not be coming back, and will be happy to grocery shop elsewhere. read more

He stopped what he was working on, took the two plants inside the store for me, rang them up and then insisted on placing them in my car for me. He was very friend, professional and kind. My one star rating is for the management of this store, not the employees they manage. We ordered a cake from Stop and Shop online. They have a professional looking form with drop down menus where you choose your cake. Once I had ordered the cake, they sent me a confirmation email. When I went to pick up the cake the employees at the bakery counter said that they never get the online orders. My cake wasn't there, and its "normal" that my cake isn't there, because I ordered it online. We had planned on picking up the cake 2 hours before going to my son's birthday party. We had a list of other errands that needed to be done before the party too. It was so unprofessional that this store would allow an online form to exist that doesn't work. The bakery staff quickly put together a great looking cake for me, decorating and personalizing it beautifully. This situation wasn't easy for me, my son or for them. Shame on the management of this store. They aren't doing a good job solving a very simple problem. read more

I don't like their store brands... and in most cases, that is all you carry now. I want DIVERSITY in my brands and that was possible in the past. Each time I make inquiries I am met with blank stares... and "we cannot deviate from the product mix that we are told to specify for the store" Really? That is SO horrible. On Christmas eve near 11 am or so, I stopped by the deli and asked if I could have a deli tray made. Initially I was told I needed a 24hr advance as I would expect, but then a gentleman with white hair and a moustache came to me and asked me what I needed. I presume he was the deli manager. He assured me he could make it happen and introduced me to a young man that began to inquire about what I wanted and then make my order. The older man with the moustache continued to be attentive to me as he noticed my anxiety rise as my husband arrived and was ready to go shortly after I ordered the platter. He hurried the process for me and let me pick the rolls. Both men were exceptional in their customer service and they whipped up a beautiful deli tray for me to take to my first Christmas with my new in-laws. I don't even like to drive by the store because it gets me agitated. I know it's not rational...why do I care so much? It really offends me the way the store charges sky high prices and claims (through their new ad campaign) that their prices are so low. The prices might not be so offensive if the shopping experience were even the slightest bit enjoyable (e.g. Whole Foods). This past year they converted 1/2 of the check-outs to self-check, and they all but force you to use them by way of having one manned check-out open most of the time. The carriages are often stacked so deep at the exit that you struggle to get your cart out of the store -- if fact I once had to call for assistance to exit. Do you like to put your kids in the kid-friendly (and germ-infested) car carts? Be warned that they only fit through one check-out lane -- and usually not the one that is open. AVOID S&S! Go to Market Basket for anything packaged (save 25%, no kidding) and Trader Joes or Whole Foods for fresh produce and deli/meats. I feel better now. Thanks. read more
