On Tuesday 5/5/2026, manager Barbara Burl came up to me at 7:10 am while I was at my storage unit (unit #136) and said she was going to kick me out for sleeping in my unit. I have never slept in my unit, nor have I broken any rules at Extra Space Storage. Barbara said that she was the manager, but she refused to tell me her name when I asked her her name. I found her name out later. She also lied to me and claimed she saw me on camera sleeping in my unit when I told her to go back and look at the cameras to prove I was doing nothing wrong. I went back to the office at Extra Space Storage at around 10 am the same day during office hours to complain about this. Barbara had the day off (she came in on her day off 2 hours before the office was even open to lie to me and harass me.) A man was working in the office and he said he was the manager, but I don't know his name. I filed a report with the district manager, Ana Valentin, complaining about this and also filed a report with the Chicago Police Department. I'm attaching a copy of my police report. After that date, Barbara did not threaten me, lie to me, or harass me anymore, but as of today, (8/22/26), Barbara still works there. There is an older white gentleman who has a unit right across from my former unit who, 90% of the time, was there when I arrived at my unit and was still there when I left. He would often plug his laptop computer into the wall outlet and sit down and use it, which I know is frowned upon at storage units. Yet, I never saw any employees say anything to him. I have no idea why Barbara did this to me because the first time I had a unit here, I only saw her a couple of times, but she was very pleasant to me back then. She was also very nice to me over the phone in October 2025 when I was arranging moving out of my unit. I have a feeling that Barbara did not do this on her own and that someone else put her up to it for some reason. I am reporting this because I want to make sure that Barbara doesn't do this same thing, or worse, to any other customers at Extra Space Storage. As long as customers aren't breaking any rules and are behaving respectfully, they don't deserve to be lied to, threatened, harassed, or treated like crap.

It was too stressful so I just researched a bunch of self-storage facilities near my apartment and found this one. They had a deal online for the first few months, so I went to check out the facility and met Monique, the Property Manager there, who was AMAZING. She showed me around and helped me figure out which storage unit was best for my items and really made me feel comfortable and relaxed about storing my items there on such short notice. I don't know what I was expecting, but this storage facility is really clean and well lit and very well protected with codes required to both enter the facility through one of the moving doors and to access the elevator. I felt very safe there and I felt very safe in leaving my items there. And Monique wasn't just amazing when I signed up for a storage unit there, she was amazing all throughout the time I kept my items there if I had any questions. When I finally went to move my items out and onto a long distance moving van, she made the entire process so easy for the movers to get into the building and the exit paperwork was incredibly easy to fill out and take care of too. If you are stressed about moving your items into storage, store them here. Monique and any of the rest of the staff there that I interacted with were incredible helpful and kind. Hallways are clear, lights are motion censored, obvious climate controlled. Plenty of carts to use for your loads. Cons: America gave me a map of facility but such tiny print made it difficult to use. Simple reflective numbers as you round corners would be extremely helpful. The pad for access code, the hand sensor to open the door leaving, the elevator buttons, have all seen better days. America was busy in the facility and out of office when we arrived. The sign on door said 1245 return, almost hour and half later. Called the facility number, remote customer service bot, etc. America did call us about 20 mins later. Explained that when she is rounding, she can't be contacted by customer service (no beeper, cell, walkie-talkie) etc. That's an issue for customers needing assistance ie needing a lock cut off or someone needing a storage unit tour. My sister was clearing out her storage unit. We had movers scheduled. It was a smooth process after a rocky start. America is an asset to this facility.

You have to write down the full Credit Card number, the expiration date, and even the CVV on what looks like a badly photocopied piece of paper. When we had to change the card on file, we had to actually go to the office and complete another dodgy looking form, rather do it online, securely, through a website or an app. Surely having to write down your entire Credit Card number with expiration date and CVV is not PCI compliant (and yet I did it anyway). Two, they raised our rate immediately after signing up and then they raised it again shortly after that. We hadn't even had the unit for one year. Our original rate was $47/month when we joined in May, in July it was raised to $59/month, and then in November it was $65/month. Three, we attempted to access our storage unit outside of office hours a few times but the pin pad to get into the building was broken more often than it worked. The last time we went, our car was full of stuff but couldn't get in (again). This was deal breaker for us. Other things that were annoying: there is no dedicated parking, only street parking. The office and lobby area wreak of cigarette smoke. The storage unit itself was fine, but the floor was unfinished. When we went to say we were moving out, there were no questions asked. Just a "what is your unit number?" and "sign here" and "here's your move out receipt". Like ok, bye?

The bad thing of it is there's a camera right there and for some reason they say their cameras glitched out at the time that my stuff was stolen . After that they went up on my rent and then I went to pay my bill on the day of the due date which is the first and they charged me a late fee because it was after 5:00 when I did it over the phone .
