When I got the bike, they put a folk lift through the box and bent my rim. So, my brand new bike was NEVER truly new. It was like pulling teeth just to get a replacement tire, when (in the end) I actually needed a new frame. Which the owner rerfused to provide. Do yourself a favor and NEVER go to H&S Bicycles. We went here on a friend's recommendation. Christian was SUPER helpful. We told him our budget for bike shoes (which was on the lower side) and he was able to find some options for us, then gave them to us at a 30% discount so that it would be within our budget. He did the same for me with my biking gloves. Overall he was really helpful in finding options for us, then giving us discounts so it fit our budget. He definitely earned our future business! I bought a commuter type bike here (that's what I was looking for). Good service, gave me some accessories at a discount. My only slight complaint is that there does, as some of the other reviews indicated, seem to be just a little bit of elite cyclist superiority attitude, which is just not necessary. All kinds of people ride bikes, and businesses should be equally welcoming to all. But having said that, this store is fair, the service is expert, and they have a good selection of bikes and accessories. read more

I'm a longtime cyclist and ride about 4,000/mi year. I don't often come to H&S because they don't carry a lot of the higher-end stuff I buy. That's not elitist, it's just the truth. After reading some of the other reviews I have a minor rant, so heeere goes: There is never any excuse for salespeople not being attentive and good listeners. I've had mixed experiences with H&S in that regard, although they seem to be much better than they used to be. That said, some people need to understand that LBSs ("Local Bike Shops") are in a bitter fight for their existence in competition with Walmart and the internet. This race to the bottom means that most new bicycles are inferior to those built 20 years ago and profit margins are next to nothing. On top of that, LBSs have overhead. So if a mechanic writes on your receipt, "Shorten brake cable and tune up...as best as possible", he's not tweaking you - that means he doesn't want you coming back screaming because your rusted, unmaintained Chinese POS that cost $200 new doesn't ride like a $3,000 Trek. The only reason techs work on bikes like yours is because they know what the economy is like and they're trying to help you out, and most of the time the results of their work aren't a reflection of their competence as much as luck of the draw. If you want to complain, buy a bike that costs at least $500 - frankly, everything else is an unpredictable piece of junk. One example: if the brake pads rub the wheel slightly while riding, that's likely because it's a sh*tty linear-pull brake, designed for people who don't care if the brake pads rub the wheel slightly while riding. Rant over. I'm giving H&S 4 stars because their service is usually good and they're the only bike shop open on Sunday in Burbank. Keeping a door open on Sunday when most other LBS owners are out riding is service. EDIT: Went to pick up a safety light and the salesperson opened up four boxes to show me the differences between different models. That's going way out of his way, and worth an extra star. read more

I went to the Granada Hills location and was so impressed with the level of service and the warm and sincere attitude of the employees. They helped me with a small crank issue and happily explained everything to me ( a hopeless bike newbie) and fixed it for me as i stood there waiting with my wife and son in the car. So i just got my first fixed gear bike. Bought it used of craigslist about a month or so ago. The other day the bottom bracket started making a knocking sound. So i took it home and tried to fix it myself as Ive been riding bmx bikes all my life and never had anyone fix any of my bikes Ive always seen myself as i "learn as i go" type. With that said I didnt know road bike / single speeds / fixies needed special tools to pull the crank apart. So i went to this shop thinking maybe i could get some idea or help with this. NOPE. I dont know if the guy didnt care or if bike shops dont help ppl out like the bike shop i grow up with. Guy wanted to sell me the tool or have them fix it for me. 1 - i wasnt sure what was wrong. 2 - I didnt have the money to blow and dont know what they charge to fix bikes as i have always fixed my own. 3 - i didnt need someone to do it for me i just needed the tool. 4 - I wasnt about to leave my bike that i rode there on to be fixed. So i left and found the tool online for way less then the one he was trying to sell me and a better brand. I think i will try a different shop next time. I found the guy to be kind rude. Oh and i tried to ask it they had pedal straps before i left but i guess because i didnt get my bike fixed from them and i mentioned i didnt have much to spend that i got ignored. Oh well. A great purchase experience!!! My wife and I are novices to bicycling and were totally naive about bicycle quality and functionality. At H & S we met Jay who (over a two day period) spent about 6 hours explaining frame technology, gears, brakes, etc. Jay let my wife and I test ride at least 8 different bikes; his knowledge and patience helped us choose the right bikes for our needs. H & S has been doing work on my bike for the past two years and they are very trustworthy. In addition to the entire staff, I have had great help from Rob & Troy who are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have plenty of choices of bike shops that are closer to me, but they are worth the extra trip. Also, they have convenient hours of operations and can quickly turn around minor repairs. I actually picked up my bike today for some major servicing and forgot to bring some bungee cords to hold down the trunk and to secure my bike. The young man behind the counter, who I believe is named Seth was very helpful and volunteered to come out to my car on this day of over 100 degree heat and help tie up everything with some old tire tubes. You just don't see that type of service these days! read more

Got a flat coming out of Griffith Park, searched for nearby bike shops on Google Maps, and ended up at H&S. Compared to other bike shops I've found under similar circumstances, H&S was a very pleasant surprise -- nice people, good selection of clothing & accessories, and though I offered to leave my bike for a little while, they insisted on fixing my flat immediately so I could get back on the road. I came here to buy some water proof thermal gloves and i was greeted by jay. He was friendly and very helpful. I purchased the gloves he recomended. In the past 3 years I've learned a lot about bikes and bike shops, and the staff at service at H&S is top notch. A few examples: 1) Simple Service needs: They won't make you wait 3 days to get your 10 minute fix in. I've had to wait 2 weeks to even get in at a bike shop where I BOUGHT my carbon road bike in Santa Monica. I 2) Price - I've had my road bike and cruiser tuned up at very fair prices. 3) Quality - Road Bike Tune up - They looked at my bike before the tune up, and pointed out what I was going to need - worn brake bads, wheels trued, new chain ring. And they explained me, without making me feel like a "dumb girl". 4) Selection - I needed a new saddle bag and other accessories. I had done my research, and they had what I needed in stock. 5) Recs - They explained whey I needed a certain type of pedal on my cross bike. When I bought my road bike at another shop, they were zero help in selecting pedals. They basically told me, "you want these, yes you do". 2 years later, I switched out those pedals. 6) Cool staff - People who work here seem to get along and are welcoming to customers. I have not experienced that at other shops... some seem alienating. I am glad I found H&S! read more

I needed pedals for my 6 year olds bike (we ordered it from Toys R Us and it came without pedals, long story as to why we didn't just return it). The man that helped me was great! He helped me get the bike out of my truck and helped put it back. He made sure my fiance had put the bike together properly and made the necessary adjustments as well as put the pedals on and put air in the tires. Great people! read more

Rob and the guys have worked very hard to turn around a store that when I first saw it in fall 2008, it looked like it was stuck in 1983. They do good work, they stand behind their work, and if there's a problem, they fix it. Speaking to the earlier review about customer service attitudes, they've made improvements here too. Bike weenies can get real cliquish, but they make a real effort to engage the customer. read more
