I decided to visit Stoup Brewing after learning it was owned by a Cicerone, which is the beer equivalent training of a Sommelier. I was pleased when I arrived seeing it was an open concept brewpub with large doors, a food truck in front, and no division between the brewery and the tap handles. Nestled just north of Seattle, the setting was beautiful on a Summer day. I tried the Baltic Porter first, which is an European Lager derived from the famous British styled Ale. The goal of a Baltic Porter is to combine roast, coffee flavors with smooth lager fermentation character, along with high alcohol content. The Stoup Baltic Porter was delicious. Stoup only sells this beer in smaller ounce pours--probably because of the cost of brewing or because of the alcohol content. Nevertheless, it is well worth trying. The second beer I tried was the Lupúlo Pale Ale, which is an American Pale Ale brewed with native hops from New Mexico. It was delightful. The beer was dry, balanced between bitterness and sweetness, and bursting with hop flavor. The hop aroma and flavor reminded me of mango, cotton candy, and tropical fruit. It was one of the best beers I have tasted in a long time. Stoup is a great new brewery and I hope they eventually distribute beyond their pub. A visit to Stoup is well worth your time if you love good beer. read more

Great spot with great service!! My sister and brother in law are regulars here so I had to check out this spot while in town. I personally don't drink beers but tried their sour beer and thought it was good! My bf and brother in law are huge beer drinkers and really enjoyed their beers! The ambiance is unique and looks like an open garage. At night, they close the garage door and turn the heat on so the brewery becomes nice and cozy. Our first stop among the breweries in the area. Lots of IPA selections for my boyfriend and plenty of other selections for me! Flights, glasses and growlers available. Pretty good sized facility but divided among upstairs/downstairs and two out door patios (one up, larger one next to the main tap room). They had a food truck outside but we didn't try it. I really wanted to like this place. We are moving back to Kenmore, a veritable restaurant desert, and I was excited to see that Stoup had arrived. Sadly, we will not be returning. The service was great, the beer delicious. But. The. Food! Overpriced and not good. Two burgers, a rootbeer float and a beer cost $68 with tip and the burgers were horrible. Presentation and the fries were nice but the burger was small with a thin patty that was burned to shoe leather. Both burgers arrived the same way so I have to believe that this is just how they serve them. (no, we didn't complain - it was not inedible - it was just not good). Also, we paid $11 for a root beer float and it was fine, but just fine. For $11, I expected something large enough to share. Sorry, Stoup. Maybe we'll try something else on the menu if we have need of a large TV for a sporting event but you will sadly not be our "regular restaurant". We can get a far better burger and a far bigger root beer float at Kidd Valley for half the price. read more

Stoup was a great little visit. We stopped here to meet up with some new acquaintances and the place was quite busy. There are a lot of options on tap, so I had a flight of 6 beers. There were some that I liked, and others that I didn't, but you could tell everything was well made. My favorite beer here was the bock. So much so that I went back after my flight and got another 12oz of it. It was slightly sweet and malty, I highly recommend it! read more

Such an awesome neighborhood brewery! We visited Stoup on a Sunday afternoon and had a wonderful experience. It was a chilly day, but we were able to sit outside by the fire in their beer garden. We had the American Wheat and the German Pilsner. Both were fantastic and very reasonably priced. We also enjoyed the food truck outside. This place just rocked! It was our 2nd stop on our brewery hopping tour one day while we were visiting Seattle. We loved the signs saying "Beer in Here!" Very clever! When we arrived, there was a girl that seemed to be in training, but she helped us like a pro! We stood staring at the list for a little bit, and she was happy enough to explain her favorite beers, and guide us in the right direction. The gentleman that worked there was also really fun. When I asked him for a sticker, he said "For you? Obvi!" Haha made me laugh and put a smile on my face (considering the first place we went to was so rude!) We had a nice time chatting with them, learning about their beer, and getting recommendations on where else to go. Our favorite was definitely the Hoppy Farmhouse! I highly recommend it! As you may have noticed, I am a big fan of the patio from Stoup. While Reuben's patio around the corner is always a sure stop on a brewery night for me, I always feel so relaxed at Stoup with its more spacious patio seating arrangement. I think it's the chairs, oddly enough. A few times I've been able to snag these beautiful brightly colored Adirondack wooden lawn loveseats. Sitting here with a beer in my hand, a puppy at my feet and a great food truck out front is really lovely night. This is not to discredit the beer. Their Hef is one of my favorites in the city. It's menu doesn't change, but for good reason- solid choices and their precise brewing style makes them consistent and well-thought out. read more

I'm in town visiting my sister who lives between Ballard and Fremont. (She has informed me that this neighborhood is lovingly called frelard). As we were deciding what to do for an afternoon, she mentioned that there were about 10 breweries within 5 square miles. Obviously we had to hit some of them up. I am happy to say that Stoup is my favorite of the 3 we visited. It's very small, but it's cute, clean, and the staff is amazing! They were so funny, kind, and knowledgeable - as expected from brewery staff. We shared a flight of 6 (2 oz pours) beers which ended up coming out to around $14 total. For the price and atmosphere, Stoup is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon! Highly recommend :) read more

This is a great little industrial spot in the heart of Ballard. They don't serve food here, but there is a food truck parked outside. It was a sunny weekday and there were a few groups of people hanging out. We brought our kids, which was totally fine and they have a chalk board that the kids can draw on. This place has a good variety of beers for all tastes. I had both the cider and the wheat beer, which were excellent. The day I was there, you had to order at the bar, but that was not a problem. They also have a self serve water station which became clutch since it was such a hot day out. The service was great and they were good about giving samples. read more

Woo hoo! A brewery just steps from my house. They allow pets on certain days, fulfilling Seattle's weird obsession with bringing dogs with them everywhere. The space is cool. Very stripped down and lofty. Typical for breweries in the area I guess. The staff is cool, there's a food truck outside, the patrons seem laid back.. what's not to like? This place was poppin' & it's not hard to see why. Of all the Seattle breweries we were able to visit, I think Stoup was our favorite overall. They have a good selection, leaning more heavily on the hoppy spectrum, and they're all done well. The brewery was very family friendly, and while it's a bit small, they did manage to pack quite a good number of tables and bar seats in the space. There's about 10 brews available and they cover the full spectrum through wheat beers, lagers, traditional ales, pales, IPAs, porters, stouts, and sours. Get a six glass flight and tuck in! I really liked the feel of this place. Another industrial area brewery! The decor of this place was cool. Charcoal gray paint, with a pop of rusty orange color behind the bar. Cool looking tables hung on the wall. Not much seating inside, but plenty of standing room. An eclectic mix of people. 30-something hipsters with babies in tow, refreshing to know they allow babies in breweries. We will be "those" parents. LOL Stoup had about 7-8 beers on tap. IPA and NW Red rounded out as my top dogs. They have a cool tester tray and glasses. Each tester is $1.50 which is a good price. They also give you the choice of 12oz $3.50, or 16oz for $5. Fair price and good to have the options! Summer time must be a cool time to go, when they open up the garage door and expand their seating by 50%. I can dig it! The one bad thing about Stoup, were the facilities. ONE bathroom. ONE uni-sex bathroom. Not bad for a man, but for women to share with men is pretty revolting. (That was actually the comment from 2 guys in our group... "I feel sorry for the women!") The man who went in before my husband blew the place up. Yeah, I think I can hold it. read more

One of my favorite breweries in the Ballard area! They always have excellent beer and will often have a food truck out front as well. They have a new sour on tap, which was excellent and you have the option between two different syrups, one raspberry and the other a honey, herb-y flavor, both were excellent. I recently learned about this brewery via the guest taps at Holy Mountain Brewing Company. I'm glad I did, as Stoup has some killer german styles in their portfolio. Stoup is located in a heavy industrial area in Ballard. The theme of the taproom reflects the area, with metal chairs, edison bulbs, and a huge garage door that opens when it's warmer out. I visited with my partner on a rainy Tuesday evening. Even with a weekday downpour, the taproom was packed. Since Stoup is strictly a taproom and not a brewpub, you'll often find a food truck parked out front. On this particular night, it was a crepe truck. The inside is mostly an open floor plan. The tanks for the brewery are not stuck behind glass, but out in the open for all to see. Stoup even offers a row of seating facing in to the brewery. I tried two beers, the Bavarian Hefeweizen and the Northwest IPA. For the Hefeweizen, Stoup uses a German yeast strain. I found it on par with most standard hefeweizens. Very crisp and refreshing, and the banana/clove did not dominate. Their NW IPA met my expectations of an IPA from the area. The beer is dry hopped and the end result is a hop forward, piney and floral IPA. It's very hoppy while still retaining its own discernible character. Most of the beers come in a variety of sizes, including $2 tasters, and most can be bought in 32/64 oz growlers. I recommend a visit to Stoup for anyone wanting a laid back experience set in a unique industrial environment. Their respect and mastery of traditional German technique mixed with a killer lineup of west coast style ales is worth your attention. read more

I have tried many different beers from them but all was in cans or bottles. Thiz time I and my partner decided to stop here after having some beers at Holy Mountain already. 1. First impression: well organized place with multi locations for different purposes. They have a beautifully garden which is good for family or friends gathering. Or seatings at the main flour for people who don't like to get their skin burned during the sumemtime. A very special thing is you van actually come directly to the beer garden and order beers from there, don't have to order from their main entrance. They have taps on the site. 2. The beers as we expected, very well made, good quality beer. BUT for excellent beer, we found none. 3. This place is dog and kids friendly. And they do have food trucks on weekends Since Obec is just next door, I would recommend Stoup over them. The ambiance, the quality of beer, the seatings, the service Stoup is better. Awesome brewery atmosphere. I love how there's an upstairs you can go to that's a little quieter and more private. It also has trivia nights! Woo! The beer itself was great, but still doesn't beat my favorite Fremont Brewing. I had a few different ones on tap -- and they have a large tap selection. One thing I love is the sizing options. You can get a realllllly tiny beer if you want and just leave it at that, or have one small and one large later etc. It's nice to not be forced into a large pint you might not be prepared to drink! read more

5 stars for beer, 4 stars for ambiance, and 3 stars for service make for a 4 overall. I checked this place out when I was in Seattle last weekend, and it was my first time there since around the time they opened. I sampled four or so different brews and loved the American pale ale the most. It had all the things I look for in a pale ale. The northwest red was a close second. The service may have been due to the fact that I was there on a Friday night and Sunday afternoon, but I am definitely used to a little bit more overt friendliness during a brewery experience. Perhaps that's just my problem! There's plenty of outside seating too, which was perfect for the amazing Seattle summer weather we had when I was visiting. Inside was a bit more limited though so I imagine that may cause more problems during the winter months. read more

This was probably one my favorite breweries when visiting Seattle. It looks like it used to be an industrial building with an open garage door which is where you walked in. There were several hight table and chairs and the bar in the back. Everyone made a polite line waiting to order their beer. I got a flight of beers so my taste buds could sample as many beers as possible. I'm an IPA fan, and had three or four of them. To me they were all consistently good, and wished I had time to drink more. Went here on a weeknight so parking was available aswere seats inside and out. We decided to move outside since it was Avery nice evening and the servers were flexible and nice about it. However, the QR code order system was glitchey. We ended up going inside to order after a long wait without anyone checking in on us. Bear selection was good, nachos were good (but a bit skimpy).
