After years of trying to find a skillful barber out here in CA I have just about given up and settled with an average (at best) barber in Long Beach. That was until my most recent trip to NY. I haven't gotten a fade there in years and after getting hooked up out there I decided that I couldn't just settle on mediocrity any longer. I went on another search for a barber over the last couple of weeks. Stopped by the shops to see how they were destroying other people's heads. I knew I had to avoid the hipster rockabilly shops at all costs. $20 - $25 a haircut just isn't justifiable! Besides, they seem to be the biggest offenders of cutting your hair after they apply some crappy styling product in it; this allows them to hide their mistakes until you go home and wash your hair. I hit up Strait Up Barber Shop this past Friday after business hours and they were still there cutting domes but had the closed sign up. The guy in the first chair was cutting some little kid's hair and it was actually a great cut for a child; definitely better than the cuts I had as a kid. I knew I would have to go back in the morning and see him. I got there at 9:30am (they open at 9am) and it was packed. I waited for the barber for about 30min. He cut about 4 people in that time (the hipster spots take at least an hour on one person alone) and all the fades were basically flawless. When my turn was up he asked me what I wanted. I showed him two pictures and tried to explain myself. Low, extremely tight fade...aka east coast blow out. He asked me if I wanted it down to the skin. I assumed he meant a skin fade (straight razor). I told him no, but as close as possible. He buzzed it down but wasn't close enough. I asked him to go closer. He did so without complaining. After looking, it was still too long. I asked him his definition of skin and he said "zero" with the buzzer. I apologized for the confusion and explained that I thought he meant straight razored. He did it again for me and it came out great. After being spoiled by the great barber culture that is NY, it definitely met my standards. He was totally a nice guy and didn't even look irritated over the situation. He basically gave me three haircuts if you think about it. I apologized to him again and thanked him and gave him a $5.00 tip for a $12.00 haircut. His name is Gabriel. Hit him up for a fresh fade! read more

If you are looking for a great barber in Brea try Elite Barber. They are very professional, polite, and don't give preferential treatment to their friends. It is also clean and Irving gives awesome cuts as well as the other barbers. Give your business to someone in Brea who appreciates his/her customers. They don't deserve a star but I was required to check at least one. I even had gift certificates for this place because they were the only barber that new how to cut my son's hair until Elite Barber opened up. I wouldn't return here for a free cut. read more

Simply the best Barber Shop I've ever been to. I've sat in 3 of the 4 chairs and I can say that all 3 (Stacey, Sal(Al?) and Rowland) will listen to what you want and try their best to make it happen. I've never sat in the chair nearest the door but the guy has his regulars that seem pretty happy so he must be pretty good. The reason I've never sat in the first chair is because after sitting in Rowland's chair I decided that he understood what I wanted like no other barber I'd been to, except for Ray's Barbershop in La Puente before it became a low-rent unisex shop. Rowland does such good work that I will gladly wait until his chair opens up even if that means letting people that came in after me take a seat on one of the other chairs before me. My haircut is a pompadour, and Rowland knows first hand that a pomp needs to be cut a certain way to make it work - because he has one under his hat. He takes the time to create the classic tapered look on the sides and back and breaks out the scissors to create the proper shape on the top. When I want it longer up top, he cuts it in a way that works with the longer length and adjusts the taper on the sides and back to keep it the correct proportion. I've had him do several different variations of the pomp over the few years that I've been going to him and he has understood what I wanted and been able to execute each one correctly - except for a minor detail on the first one which has more to do with my hair than his skills. Rowland does either a good job or a great job, he's never failed to get it right even when I've been his last customer after a long day or his first customer on a hangover day. Two reasons for not rating it 5 starts. 1) The wait time can be ridiculous and there's no formal reservation process, you kind of just have to become a regular and hope that other guys that use your particular barber don't show up at around the same time as you. 2) Sometimes the guy in the 3rd chair doesn't seem to really care about doing his best. He cut my hair three times before Rowland became my barber of choice and each time was completely different and two of those times he tried to cover up his mistakes by slapping on tons of grease in my hair - I could tell it wasn't right though. He seems to do a decent job on most of the cuts he does, so maybe he just didn't know how to cut my hair in particular. But he's the only one I've seen do a rush job on another client to get to one of his regulars. read more

Not many blacks in brea so naturally I was apprehensive of getting a cut in this city. I had to meet the girlfriends family and was in dire need and could wait no longer. Needless to say I was desperate! To my surprise this place was AWESOME! Not only were they good but almost better than my original barber...and you can't beat the price of $10! Gotta say we LOVED this place! I was looking for a new barber for my hub & the kiddos and came across Strait Up on Yelp. After reading the reviews I thought I'd give it a shot. We went on a Wednesday at 5pm. There was only one other person a head of us & all 4 chairs were filled. But we didn't wait long at all & while we waited the guys in the shop were cutting up with the customers & each other...made the wait time pass pretty quick, which was nice. Now it was time for my 4 yr old. Didn't get his name, but the guy that is 2 chairs over from the window hooked my boy up with a great faux hawk for his 1st day of school. Then it was time for my 11 yr old, who also got a faux hawk. The guy in the back did his. Both of the guys did a great job & the boys loved their new cuts. I came here for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I have to disagree with past reviews, Stacy who happened to cut my hair did in fact make me feel welcomed. Ok so I had to wait for a while for my hair cut which tells me this joint must be good if everyone comes here to get their hair cuts and you have to wait. Normally when I get my hair cut I don't make plans to do things within an hour or so. If people want quick and fast cuts, go to super cuts or Fantastic Sam (Don't even think their still around) then write a review! All the guys here are great. A lot of the guys that come for hair cuts have a certain guy that cuts their hair but I have had my hair cut by all the guys here, even the guys that fill in when one is on vacation. And they all do great work. Those guys are a bunch of clowns and are always joking around. Place is like a big hang out spot where you can go chill and talk some trash. Wait gets long on the weekend (Fri & Sat), so go during the week if you are in a rush. read more

I am traveling on business to the LA area and was looking to get a hair cut during my extended stay. This place wasn't the closest to my hotel, but from the reviews and photos on yelp, looked like the place for me. I came out with a great haircut with a reasonable wait time. These guys know what what they are doing. I am very happy with how it looked. Their attention to detail really puts some of my past barbers to shame. The haircut, however, was not what made me write this review. I had actually come to this barber shop not knowing it was cash only. The barber told me not to worry about it, get a haircut first and then go to an ATM afterward. He was even nice enough to give me directions to the nearest Chase Bank. So off I headed after the cut. Now what I had also not realized was that I neglected to bring my debit card with me! No chance to get cash on a Saturday. I came back to the barber embarrassed and ready to leave a credit card or anything I could leave as collateral. The barber however simply told me not to sweat it and just come back next Tuesday and pay it then. There are not a lot of places that I've come by with this high a work ethic and trust in their customers. No nonsense place for a man to get his haircut. Their aesthetic tends towards the more classic cuts (think '40s & '50s hairstyles), but I've seen them cut all different types of styles well. The environment was great and all the barbers here are really friendly. I got my first cut here yesterday due to the fact that my normal barber wasn't available an I needed a cut really bad. I didn't have an appointment so I had to wait an 1.5 hours before I could get my cut but it was a saturday afternoon an I figured Id be waiting either way so no biggie there. This is classic barber shop setting. These barbers have personality which I don't see very often anymore. I waited for about 10 min, and met Alan. I asked for a taper fade, and he had it down perfectly. His cut was to precision, and made it seem like a easy job how swiftly he performed. Into sports? They talk basketball, baseball, hockey, etc. Great with children too. The barber right next to me gave a first time haircut to a little boy, not to mention how loud and persistent this kid cried, this dude had the patience and positive attitude to finish the job. I recommend this Alan, and the barber shop as a whole in general. Cheap cuts for 13 bucks and a "strait" razor shave to add the cherry on top. Friendly neighborhood atmosphere. The only downside to this place is that there is constantly a line out the door. Their standard price as of december is $13 which is an extremely good price for a quality job that these guys take their time on. As I waited about 40 minutes to get my seat at the chair all four barbers did good work. Their clients were mostly younger college age guys but there were some business professionals that were there too.... Been coming here for over 7 years, and theres some pros and cons I will admit. Stacey the owner is an awesome dude. One of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and always remembers who you are once you get to talking to him. I've had good haircuts and bad haircuts here, from just trying their different barbers to get a feel of who really fits my style. Finally found my guy, Andres. About a year ago or so, I noticed the big guy with plugs in his ears, and a smile that almost reached them. I decided to give him a shot, and since then he was the ONLY one to cut my hair! Even went to him the day before my wedding because i knew he could get the job done. I've been getting the same cut every time and I don't even have to say anything, he just knows how to cut it up right. He takes his time, and it shows. Everything is even, smooth and FREAKIN CLEAN. You can get in and out within 45 min and have style that is worth way more than the $20 they charge. TIP: Giving your guy (or girl now) a good tip, typically helps get you in quicker with your next visit. Really glad I found this place. I get a haircut every week so it is super important for me to find a place that does great work and this is it! At 13 bucks for a razor fade with a straight razor you can't beat it. The atmosphere is great especially after being cooped up in an office all day and everybody seems happy here.
