I'm what one might call an escape room enthusiast. So, when I moved to Houston, I started sifting through reviews to find the best. I learned about Strange Bird Immersive about a year ago. A couple months following my new discovery, they had delightful news - they will be moving to a new bigger location. Hearing this news excited me, but as expected, that news came with a wait. During the wait I found myself getting more and more hyped for the reopening. Their website and descriptions have a similar vibe to Sleep No More, and I was excited for an escape room experience with the immersion. But, even beyond that during the wait they sprinkled their social media with thrilling updates and an adorable "Where's Walter?" game to get you invested in finding and celebrating the new location. It's a year later now and I believe the experience was definitely worth the wait. The acting, effects, and attention to detail are on point. I tend to be extremely picky about escape rooms and this place does it from the moment you walk in the door. read more

I've done over 100 escape rooms across the United states (New Orleans, Los angeles, the bay area), and travel to cities specifically to do highly rated escape rooms. Strange bird caught our eye as one of the best rooms in the United states according to TERPECA, and was the only room in the US weve yet to do in the top 20. And so we decided to plan a weekend trip to Houston from the west coast just for this one room - and we booked a few other well regarded ones in the area. After those other rooms proved to be fairly underwhelming, the entire trip hinged on this one room being good. Luckily for us, it worked out, as I can easily say that this is one of the best rooms I've ever done. The Man From Beyond - 10/10 (One of the top 5 rooms in the United states). Escape room ratings tend to be inflated so a 10/10 doesnt mean much, but out of all the rooms I've done, the only other rooms to get this rating from me are storykeeper in Seattle, lab rat in Los Angeles, and (mayne) cutthroat cavern/tomb of anubis in new Orleans. All of these rooms are 10/10s for different reasons, and for strange bird, that reason is having the best integrated story in an escape room that I've ever seen From the minute you enter the building, you feel like you arent in an escape room lobby, but rather looking for the madame for the seance. Even the waiver signing is integrated into the immersion of the room, which gives you an idea for how far the company goes to make you feel immersed. This paysoff spectacularly, and these actress sequences are really what make the room. Keep in mind that the owners are theatre people - these isnt your standard game master who are only in character for the 2 minute introduction and leave immediately, the actress is fully in character and you'll get to interact with them for an extended period of time during portions of your experience (no puzzles are involved in these interactions so socially awkward people dont have to worry). The actress was great, and the acting combined with the special effects and set completely immersed you into the story and made you feel like you were actually performing a seance rather than doing a Houdini themed room. Once you're in the puzzly part, the room turns more into a standard Houdini escape room (dont worry, only your group will be in the room). You have your Houdini posters, straightjackets, standard Victorian style props that you've probably seen in other Houdini themed rooms. However, this room had a bunch of unique custom props that were integrated well into the story. There were a ton of small snippets of lore and story relevance attached to each prop and puzzle, and even the combination locks that I normally loathe were integrated neatly with the lore behind the room. Here the little touches really elevate this part from most standard rooms - changes in ambient noise, the sound effect for when an old timey projector starts, the crackling sound of the radio, changes in ambient sounds as certain sequences triggered in the room were all meticulously and well done. Finally, whereas most rooms end with a whimper, the ending sequence in this room ended in a bang, and was the most satisfying ending I've had in an escape room. It felt like you were in the last 10 minutes of a movie where the main conflict of the story was wrapped up through acting in an emotionally satisfying, multifaceted conclusion. The owners took this as far as they could even after you leave the room, and their actions led me to do something that I have never done in an escape room, which is accept the "you escaped" prop that rooms hand you at the end of the room - done in such a flavorful and tasteful way that youd be a monster to refuse it. If I had to critique this room, I would say that the actual escape room set or puzzles arent miles better than your above average room - while the set and puzzle integration with the story was still far superior than other rooms, the puzzly part only contains a single room (similar to the Houdini room in vanishing act in seattle), and isnt that different from similar rooms (though it has more custom tech). The puzzles were fairly standard for enthusiasts and on the easier side as well, though again, integrated very well into the overall narrative of the room. To conclude, strange bird is an storyful and immersive experience that you simply cannot get anywhere else in the United States. No other room incorporates story to the level that this room does, and this is the type of room that sets an example for the rest of the industry for how much better their rooms could be storywise. Owners should go here to steal their ideas, enthusiasts can plan an entire trip for if they enjoy story in their rooms, and locals would be crazy to not check out (especially given how average the rest of the competition in the area is). I would definitely recommend this escape room for first timers. I had some in my group and they loved it. It's truly unique with the actor/actress! (I just found out that they are married! So awesome). The puzzles were more easier than other rooms but the immersive experience balances it out. You get a choice of cocktail or chocolate upon your arrival. It's located in the Silos at Sawyer Yard so you will need a code to get into the door. We escaped with 20 minutes left so we're smart cookies :P read more

Far more than an escape room, this is immersive theater, where the audience interacts directly with the performer. I have never experienced anything like it. Very professional. Unbelievable attention to detail in every aspect of the design, right down to the background music and aromas. The puzzles were clever, logical, and woven beautifully into the narrative. A lot of fun and an interesting experience. I brought my mom and sister and they both enjoyed it even though they are not the type to do this type of activity. The place is a little difficult to find; they do try to help you with a map but it was still a little confusing. It's best to try to arrive early so you can find your way in easily. The actors were both great and the things in the room were fun to explore, solve, and utilize. Being that I like the horror and mystery genre I liked the vibe of the place. I wanted to try an escape room, so I looked up ones that were the best online and Strange Bird kept coming up. So I booked for the Valentine's Day weekend. I really had no expectations, but I knew based on reviews that this escape room would not only be mysteriously challenging, but theatrically exciting. I did not tell my husband much about what to expect so we both were curiously excited when we entered the building. From start to finish, this experience was like nothing we had ever been apart of. I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say if you love escape rooms and theater, this would be a perfect marriage for you. A so-called expert in these matters, one Madame Daphne, was to lead us on our quest to communicate with souls from other realms. Little did we know what fate awaited us...no simple tarot reading or seance, but a tense struggle for our very liberty against an unseen--but definitely not unheard--intelligence. I promised Madame Daphne I wouldn't reveal too many secrets about the evening. The Immersive Experience was absolutely delightful, the puzzles were woven within the narrative wonderfully. The experience feels like you are part of a play but at the same time you still feel like failure is an option. The production value of this experience is top notch, I have not seen an escape room of this caliber before. The puzzles themselves are challenging enough to keep you engaged in the story but not so frustrating that you give up. It also helps that the puzzles are directly related to the narrative, so if you are paying attention they make sense. Honestly, I wish I could do this escape room again for the first time! I just moved here from DC and did my fair share of escape rooms in that location as well as Orlando, and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. This escape room topped all of those. I am an experienced escape room player. I have done over 50 escape rooms in the last year, and Strange Bird Immersive is by far the best. Madame Daphne and the entire immersive experience made this stand above all other escape rooms. The decor, the attention to detail, the mystery, everything ties together to make it perfect. This room was so good that my normal group has planned another trip to Houston, just to do this room again with our spouses. GO GO GO GO! This is by far the best escape room I have ever been to! I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it. We rented the entire room for a birthday party and every person contributed and had a blast! The special effects were jaw-dropping and Madam Daphne was so hospitable and spooky and gorgeous. There were also no math-based puzzles, which was a relief. There also wasn't a perceivable hint count, which took a lot of the stress off and we were able to finish with 5 minutes to spare! But that may have been because we were a group of minors who had no idea what we were doing. It was just spooky enough to absorb me into the space. The actors were amazing and the storyline was impeccable. The people who made this should be more than proud and I hope that someday they expand as I would love to solve a new room but this one is so elaborate I can't imagine not wanting to go again! read more

My friends and I are escape room enthusiasts who have done MANY rooms, and this is by far one of my favorites. The Strange Bird team did an amazing job making the puzzles fit well with the theme of their room. Nothing makes me more annoyed than just doing scavenger hunt after scavenger hunt with no rhyme or reason in an escape room, but this was NOT the case. Every puzzle had a meaning and was very well thought out. I was honestly skeptical about the acting portion of the show prior to going, but it really added a great deal of value to the experience and was extremely well done. There are not words to describe this experience. First of all, the cast of Strange Bird Immersive is talented on another level. What should be mentioned is that another skill they have mastered is that of guest service. They were able to set up a custom time for my group last month as we were coming from out of town and that meant the world! It is an experience from the moment you book your spot.
