Went on a date, having been wanting to go for a while. Friendly service and great ambiance. We started with a $25 appetizer from the specials menu. It was a few pieces of fried seafood on a bed of wilted lettuces. The fish was not fresh (possibly frozen for an extended period), very poor texture, and absolutely no seasoning. Mostly tasted like fishy fryer oil. The salads were OK, quality was on par with the local pizzeria down the street. Both entrees were not good. There was no salt, pepper or lemon and the dishes were starved for it. Staff was very friendly but not attentive. Never asked how anything was. We flagged down other people including the host to ask for seasonings and rounds of drinks. Wine was good though. It was very expensive and not worth it at all. Would not recommend. read more

We met family for dinner in Dumbo, Brooklyn and had delicious Italian meals. We ordered Alfredo's meatballs, and I liked the tartness of the tomato sauce. The fettuccine alla bolognese came with beef, pork, and veal ragú, and I enjoyed the fresh pasta's al dente texture. As a dessert, the blueberry panna cotta, a creamy gelatin, tasted refreshing and had a good sweetness level. Service was excellent, and the waiter was gracefully patient with us as we took time to catch up during our reunion. The ambience felt relaxed at first since we had an early reservation, and they had a classic movie in black-and-white playing on a projector screen. All under seasoned. You get one slice of bread with the tomatoes per serving. It could use some coarse sea salt and pepper. Basil would make it over the top. The meatballs had a nice texture and the sauce was nice. We had lasagna...under seasoned. We had a pasta with shrimp. The pasta was not al dente, in fact it was undercooked yet the sprouts were overcooked. Even the ginger ale was flat. This is really not worth the uber we took to get back home. The ambiance was ok also, I was surprised that the mirrors were hung so high. The restrooms were nice, but the floors could use some attention. Our server went on break during our reservation. Spontaneous night in BK. Stumbled upon this chic spot. Not your traditional Italian restaurant. I usually order chicken parmesan and that was not available to order. I adjusted and was satisfied. The ambiance was beautiful and the restaurant was spacious. Staff was courteous. If you want bread at your table which I thought was a given at an Italian restaurant, please know that you must ask for it. They brought it out quickly and it along with my meal was delicious. Came here at 6:15PM on a Friday night. There was already a good amount of people inside so I'm glad we made reservations ahead of time. We got seated and got to ordering! We ordered the meatballs, octopus carpaccio, fettuccine, rabbit pasta, and the risotto. The appetizers came out quickly and we got to chomping! The meatballs were pretty good. It wasn't dry and the sauce paired well. The carpaccio was fresh. The only issue was miscommunication, or lack of. When we ordered, we weren't asked if we wanted things to come as they were ready or appetizers first and mains after. We finished our appetizers and sat around for quite some time before someone came to ask if we finished. Mains came shortly after and the pasta were very comforting. The fettuccine was a tad bit too saucy but still had good taste. The rabbit was juicy. The overall ambience and food wasn't bad, but service was lacking a bit. Called to make a reservation about an hour before they opened. They let us know they were wrapping up a private event. We were happy to wait. Once arrived truly beautiful for how inviting they were while preparing for normal service. We started at the bar, moved to a two top table. Chris our server couldn't have been better. Kind, approachable, gave us space to have a date night while we still never waited or wanted for a thing. In fact at one point we spilled a little water, he was quietly right there. The ricotta crostini lacked some flavor, the zucchini flowers were slightly over-oily, and the red sauce was a bit lacking in flavor as well. Fairly priced for the neighborhood and worth a try if nearby. Not too crowded and had spacious ceilings. In a city that is filled with all varieties of Italian food, AlMar is a quaint, if not intimate example of taking traditional Italian to a new level. The lasagna, with at least 7 layers was amazing. Almost delicate in its preparation, but packing loads of flavor. The meatball appetizer is delicious and should not be missed. The pork ribs, were a surprise in their texture and flavor. The service was excellent and accommodating for dietary restrictions. My family and I had a delightful experience and recommend AlMar very highly. read more

Lovely ambience with a rustic vibe right in the heart of Dumbo. The food was just mediocre. Instagram worthy, but lacking some dimension. The egg in a cloud was cool to look at, but you realize that eating a large volume of fluffy egg whites doesn't do much for you. I appreciate the cheese and spinach beneath, but felt this dish could use another component. The eggs purgatory had a pretty plain tomato base, the bread was good, but the kale on the side seemed like an afterthought. For about $14 per dish, I was not full whatsoever and nothing seemed to stand out. It was just ok. We ordered the Nutella Panino and this was also disappointing. Everything seemed too soft and I felt the bread could have been toasted to create contrast between the already soft Nutella. Good brunch place. A quick walk from the Cliffs at Dumbo if you're looking for a good place to eat after bouldering. At around Sunday 1:40pm, we arrived and there was a 20 min wait to get seated. I got the smoked salmon panini which taste very good and was healthy. The atmosphere is chill with plenty of seats. Even when it was fully seated, conversation was easily made and heard. It's got a rustic/classy vibe thats great for dates or a business dinner. They can also seat large parties at the center long table. We got the fritto misto, eggplant parm, and orchiette. Fritto misto had good flavor but could be a bit more crispy and it could use a sauce (it didn't initially come with one but our server provided a marinara when we asked). The eggplant parm was delicious (personally I would've liked a bit more salt). I loved the orchiette but my partner thought there was too much sausage to pasta ratio and the sausage made the dish too salty. Prices are reasonable, would come back and try something else. read more

I ordered Egg in a Cloud (Baked Egg Yolks in Whipped Egg Whites on top of Toasted Brioche with Ham & Fontina Cheese, Served with Sauteed Spinach), it looked like a cauliflower, very cute. Love the texture of the whipped egg whit, so fluffy. My friend was happy with the Egg in Purgatory and the steak. The service was fine. Wow, so happy we tried this spot for brunch today. I remember when it first opened years ago in Dumbo, when I lived down the block. I've never been for brunch, and finally did today. Get the egg in a cloud and the crispy egg risotto with squash and Parmesan. Also, get the latte, which comes in this day-fueling mega mug. I had the butternut squash soup, which could be a meal on its own bc it's a big bowl! Nutmeg and cloves highlight the dish and make it a seasonal delight. The whipped ricotta was good, with honey drizzled over it and a walnut topping it, but it wasn't anything to write home about. The pasta dishes were amazing! My girlfriend and I came here while we were exploring around Dumbo to check out the food scene in the area. AlMar sticked out to us as a classy and cute dinner date location. We came a bit early so we were seated very quickly without a reservation. It got packed very quickly though around 7 to 8 pm. Service: The service here is great. The waiter and waitress checks up on us very regularly and I always appreciate when the water bottle gets a refill! Food: My favorite thing to do at a restaurant, especially when the focus here is Italian pasta, is asking the waiter what their favorite or recommendations are for first-timers at this restaurant! The three recommendations from the waiter were the Mezzi Rigatoni ($25), the Lasanga ($26), and the Ziti with Veal and Onion ($30). For appetizers, we went with Alfredo's Meatball ($15) - I sometimes judge a restaurant on its tomato sauce. For the entree, my girlfriend got the Mezzi Rigatoni and I got the ziti so we can try 2/3 of the pasta dishes out. The Mezzi Rigatoni seems to be one of their popular pasta dishes that a lot of customers ordered the most. The mezzi was cooked with sausages and peas over some really fresh red pasta sauce. I really liked the pasta texture and it went well with the overall dish, so I can see why people enjoy ordering this dish. I did feel the pasta is a little hard, but that just coming from someone who like their pasta a little more soft haha. My Ziti was delicious, the texture was soft, and the onions made it feel like a soupy dish, but it tasted good with the veal, so no complaints from me! They do not have a dessert menu, so our waiter/waiteress will tell us what the desserts are out loud so we went with the tiramissu in a martini glass. I like the tiramisu here. I judged it by the strong coffee flavor and how creamy it is, and yes, it was very creamy! Overall: Solid italian resturant for dinner and date night. The restaurant is not large, and had been crowded at lunch time because we got there late and most tables were still taken. It's a fairly noisy room given the high ceiling and lack of anything that resists noise. We had the caprese panino, the farm salad and the chicken marsala. The panini lacked much flavor - it needed fresh basil (a tiny piece there), which the restaurant could have grown by the barrel given their huge sunny windows in front. The rest was good, not great. If you see a photo of this beautiful brunch creation and are not exactly sure what it is, here's the description straight off the menu: "Baked Egg Yolks in Whipped Egg Whites on top of Toasted Brioche with Smoked Ham & Fontina Cheese, Served with Sauteed Spinach". If that doesn't sound delicious to you, we need to talk. The egg whites are so fluffy and all the textures complement each other nicely. The price is a reasonable $14 for a very filling brunch, which is basically two meals already! I called for a reservation for Saturday 11:30 brunch, but the restaurant was not that busy before noon. So when we arrived, there were still several unoccupied tables. This was not the case by the time we finished our meal - there seemed to be a long wait. I would still recommend just making a reservation. Location is super convenient if you're exploring the Brooklyn Bridge and Dumbo. My reasons for four stars instead of five: an annoying fly buzzing around us during our meal (restaurant is open air) and the somewhat pricey avocado side ($4). Brunching at AlMar is one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in New York. And one of the first things to note about this place is that they charge an additional 4% on any bills paid with a credit card (instead of cash) plus an "encouraged-by-the-owner" 20% tip is automatically tacked onto your bill regardless of your party size. The 4% is mentioned on all their menus and the 20% is not, unless you catch and ask about it at the end of your meal. For 4 people, we had a reservation for a Saturday at 11:30a. The place was fairly empty when we got there but it did gradually fill up by the time we left. We ordered 2x The Almar, Eggs Purgatory, Grilled Portobello Mushroom Panini, 1x side of Roasted Potatoes, 1x side of Organic, Thick-Cut Bacon, 1x Spritz, 2x Mimosa, 2x The Great Saint, and 2x The Dumbo. The food tasted fine and everything was going well until we asked for the bill and saw that they've: 1. charged another table's entire tab onto ours, 2. charged us for a drink they said they'd remove because they missed it the first time around, and 2. added a 20% gratuity. When we brought these issues up, our server apologized for the incorrect bill and explained that the 20% gratuity is encouraged by the owner. He also said he'd remove the additional drink along with all of the items from a different table. However, when he returned, he said, "I removed all of the incorrectly added items and the 20% gratuity but I'm not going to remove the drink anymore." We reminded him that he said he'd remove the drink but he slams his fist on our table and says, "I'm not going to argue about this with you. This is the final bill." At this point, we're shocked and just staring at him as he walked away. A few days later, I wrote in directly to the restaurant about this unprofessional behavior and inexcusable experience. The owner apologized and invited us back for a second visit; we've responded asking when he'd like us to return but he hasn't replied and it's been over two weeks. Given how our brunch turned out and how the owner handled the follow up, I don't believe a good dining experience is a priority for AlMar and I don't think I'll ever return again. read more
