While in St. Louis late June 2016 I CRAVED Miss Hulling's Split Layer Chocolate Cake. Straub's is the ONLY place in St. Louis or any where else that carries Miss Hulling's. After other trips I learned I needed to call to find out which location had the cakes and to hold them for me. I called the staff were helpful and made sure the type and number of cakes were held for me. Myself and company descended on Straub's where I was directed to the closed Bakery. However, someone met me there. She pulled the cakes from the freezer (they thaw spectacularly) 3 Chocolate Split Layer and 1 Lemon Split Layer. My companions realized we needed a Gluten Free option (a FABULOUS GF Hot Fudge) for one person and some soda's which, we needed the day before but, had not had. We must have looked like the Marx Brother's{Sister's) in line at the cashier and realizing we needed this, too. Or we needed that or the other. Straub's is a specialty food market, which it does well, but it also has every day items there marked up? I can't believe anyone would buy those items at those prices. Which is why every time I go in there, I always wonder how much they end up throwing out? The meat is always fresh, and the butcher is super nice. The sausages and burgers are a must. I also like their seafood counter. My other favorite counter is the deli and the bakery. The fried chicken! The chicken salad! The dips! The cakes! I do like the fact that every time I wander in there, you can find something unique. It's always an experience. But honestly, if Straub's wasn't there, there still would be other places to go for what I would be looking for. read more

I love Straub's. I wouldn't do my bulk grocery shopping here because it is pricier, but I pick up items I forgot other places or specialty items. It's really not THAT much more expensive - the priciest items are the prepared food and the flowers. The thing I love about this place is the people. Everyone is so nice!! Since I work in a school I had the summer off and made trips to Straub's many times per week. I got to know the staff and they were always helpful and sweet. Easy place to park and get on your way. I had a roast beef sandwich with horseradish aioli from here, over two months ago, and I still am not over it. It was a mythic sandwich experience. I was staying in a nearby hotel and only got to stop by once, but I had to write a review because weeks and weeks later I am still pining over The Best, Most Perfect Sandwich In All The World. The young man who made it for me was very nice and we had an actual conversation about the aioli vs just regular horseradish and he was absolutely right, beside taking my order as seriously as I did. He was a guy who knew very well that he was creating sublime sandwich perfection. I wish I could remember his name, because he deserve a commemorative plaque of some kind. Today I went to Straub's (Webster Groves) for the first time. I live in South County, and I shop at Dierberg's and Schuuck's out of convenience, so after getting their weekly ads via email, I thought I'd give them a shot to change things up. I ordered chicken salad, tuna salad, broccoli salad (on sale for $5.99/lb) and egg salad (all in 1 lb containers). Smoked wings were on sale for $8.99/lb, and I got 2 lbs. .. Went up to the deli, and I finally got waited on after a couple of minutes standing there, no one in line, with three employees talking with each other about personal stuff. When I finally got service, the deli attendant put the wrong price on the broccoli salad (He labeled it as tuna @ $10.99/lb).. I noticed this at home. The tuna salad was bad. I tasted a spoonful, noticed the strange taste, and got sick to my stomach 15 minutes later. Threw $12.83 container of tuna away. Sampled the other three just before writing this, and the egg salad was bad. Threw that out ($9.98). Chicken and broccoli salad were good. Deli attendant had no idea what wings were on sale, so he asked around. Waited a couple of minutes to get the answer on that. I guess they're not up on their weekly ads there. The wings were good however. The romaine lettuce in the produce section was wilted. Overall, very disappointed. read more

We recently stayed at the hotel next door, and wound up hitting this store every day we were in town to pick up sandwiches, snacks, and booze. Great store with an amazing deli section and very friendly staff. Prices seemed extremely reasonable given the high quality. Good/interesting beer and wine selection. read more

Straub's could use some remodeling at the front entrance/cashier area. The location across the Chase Park Plaza and nice Central West End neighborhood makes me think that at one time, this place had more gourmet options, but due to the economy, the selection of fine foods has decreased over time. However, there is still a nice deli, bakery, and cheese selection and quite a bit of imported sweets and savory grocery items in the aisles. In addition to this location, there are three more locations. I have heard good things about Straub's deli and baked goods so when I return to St. Louis, I stop by the other locations as well. read more

It's a pretentious, high priced, highfalutin corner market. But it's closer to my pad than the "Super"market. And it has better produce. And it has better meat. And a better bakery. And the staff is friendlier and genuinely helpful. And they've got Cadbury's chocolates and Orangina. Further, they stock lots of organic foods and strongly promote buying their reusable canvas shopping bags. So since I don't have to drive there, my carbon footprint is taken care of. read more

Great grocery store in the Central West End if you don't want to brave the Schnuck's on Lindell or drive further out to get your groceries. Selection is limited versus a larger market and prices do tend to the higher side. The deli in the back has some solid options. The chicken salad is a standout and shouldn't be missed if you're looking for something to take home with you. read more

The butchers here deserve a 5 because they are so friendly and can slice your meat as thin as you want. Perfect for making Vietnamese pho and grilling tabletop - Korean or Japanese style. I'm visiting from Florida and staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel across the street. I visited Straub's twice today, and the last time was right before closing. You might think that everyone would be tired and ready to go home, but I got even better service in the evening than I did in the afternoon... (and everyone I passed in the afternoon genuinely tried to help me find groceries). I'll be visiting one or two time more before I head home. The meat department staff is by far the best I have seen in my 20+ years here in STL! The quality of meats is superb! And they will cut and trim it to your specifications. I can not say enough good things about them. The rest of the service staff is also outstanding. Some items are a bit pricey, but quality isn't cheap. I enjoy the fact that Straub's carries many locally produced items as well. This is my go to store for quality meats, fruits, and vegetables. I much rather support a locally owned business rather than a huge corporate chain. It is always a pleasure to shop here. read more

Waiting for Whole Foods Can't wait for competiton in the CWE. While the meat counter and cashiers are second to none, produce and store management are bottom rung. Pricing is either notmarked or inaccurate (i.e, different price at the register) or so much higher than called for even for the convenience of the loccation. Go to Shncuks in the meantime. read more

Another thing, the people who work there, especially some of the cashiers...totally condecending...I just get the most evil looks when I go to pay for my stuff. I really enjoy Straub's prepared food for a quick weeknight dinner but this past weekend we used Straub's for a small catering order and I was equally impressed. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at the Chase Park Plaza and we had breakfast and lunch trays brought over to the Chase for the bridal party while we were getting ready for the wedding. The breakfast trays consisted of mini croissants and a variety of large and delicious muffins. Everything was fresh and tasty! For lunch they prepared deli trays with bagels and croissants to make sandwiches as well as veggies and dip. The deli trays had several types of meats and cheeses as well as mayo and mustard packets. This set up worked perfectly for our group so everyone could pick and choose what and when they'd like to eat. read more

Place is alright, has good quality stuff and a good selection. Has a decent mix of things you generally only find at whole foods, and some of the normal grocery crap, Cheerios or whatever. The seafood monger and butcher shop is really good though, and they seem to have a decent cheese selection. Great selection for a small store, including Daiya vegan cheeses, locally produced goods, full wine and liquor department, prepared foods plus traditional grocery items. Really surprised the ratings are this low for Straub's. It is a little expensive but it's oh so good!! And the cheeses! The wines! The store credit (i.e. store tab with my last name on it so I just get invoiced and don't have to pay right then)! This is the best place around ~ gives me the warm and fuzzy feelings! I shop here regularly and think the quality is really high. You can also compare prices and sometimes get some deals. It's a pleasure to have an efficient shopping trip without traipsing around a huge store - most of which aisles I don't need. The fish and meat sellers are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, leading me to make my first mussels ever and to start buying ruby red trout in addition to the great salmon. For Easter I served friends Straub's butterflied leg of lamb marinated in wine, rosemary and garlic; in addition to a pork tenderloin finished with a wine glaze (mine). Both were big hits, especially the lamb. To me, your rotisserie chicken is more tasty and healthier- because less salty- than competing versions. I regularly get selections from the prepared salads to take to a film group, who love the green beans almondine. read more

If you live in the West End, you have a couple of options for groceries. You can battle traffic, lines, parking/hell to get to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Schnuck's on Clayton Rd, you can go to Straub's, or you can go to the The Worst Grocery Store Ever: Schnuck's on Lindell. You'll pay more at Straub's, but it's the most well-stocked grocery store in the city. They have everything you could possibly ever need, including the essentials for any posh party you can dream up. They have a super attentive, knowledgeable staff, a great selection of prepared items, awesome produce...what's not to love? Even if you pay more, you're guaranteed to get the best of everything because it's not some massive, quantity driven supermart. They seriously have everything. They have regular pasta sauce, fancy pasta sauce and gourmet, which is like $9 a jar. Same goes for everything else they carry. I actually found these special cookies that I haven't seen since I was about 6 years old and I've never seen anywhere else. I have a newfound respect for St. Louis prices after living in Chicago for a while; what you pay at Straub's is still marked up less than at most places in any other major city. I happen on this grocery store by accident while exploring the area on a recent visit to the area. I have to say that I am for sure a fan! This grocery store is more for gourmet stuff. I bought some pretzels (sooooooo damn good!), German franks, some marmalade and a few other things. I checked out the deli and found it well stocked with regular foods and fancy foods and CLEAN! I actually found the whole store to be clean and well stocked. I didn't really interact with the staff but they were ok enough when I was checking out. I think I will have to come back if I get back to St. Louis and do some grocery shopping for things I can't get here in Seattle. read more

I have always really enjoyed this market: the level of knowledge by all the staff, the high-quality choices and the caring staff when you need assistance! I like the size of the markets; they are not overwhelming and everything is easy to find with wonderful options! The meat and fish counter always has very high quality choices, and the butchers couldn't be more helpful! I also get fresh beef bones for my dogs there, and even something that simple gets attention and care! Their fruits and vegetables are fresh and they have a fabulous bakery section! It sounds funny, but I feel that Straubs Markets are very civilized, with wonderful options for take-home! And they really care about the food and the customer!! read more

My first experience with this grocery store, but it made me wish I lived in the neighborhood so I could shop here regularly. Was attending a meeting at the hotel next door and decided I did not want the usual restaurant fare for lunch so dropped by the deli for the "world famous Straub's chicken salad" on a croissant. Also got some pretty unique potato chips and a cranberry/lime fruit drink. Wasn't cheap but was excellent! Would highly recommend if in the neighborhood and want something different! read more

The produce was not fresh, and not much selection of organic. The pros: took a chance on a rotisserie chicken - it was good. What a great little grocery store-i always find myself bragging about it to my Illinois family. . .although they are a bit pricey. I typically stick with their deli meats and love to browse their pastries, JUST browse lol. Great place to find some unique items, such as a small independent, pricey, ice cream company, that sells ice cream in flavors such as Salty Caramel and Sweet Potato Casserole (delicious!!!) I visited Straubs for the first time in Webster Groves. I had never visited one before and recall hearing rave reviews. I was extremely disappointed with 1) Their selection 2) Deli not that impressive 3) Cost was very expensive 4) Bought fresh fruit at a price higher than I would have at other grocery stores and the quality was worse. I will never visit Straub's again as the expense did not equal the quality. I would much rather visit Whole Foods or Trader Joes or even Dierbergs/Schnucks. read more

I visit Straubs almost every day and on many days a few times. They aren't as cheap as your Dierbergs or Schnucks, but I pay more for the ease of shopping here - your in and out, the quality of the food (deli, meat, and to go meals are the best in town), and if you are looking for that weird ingredient for that random recipie, they never seem to disappoint. Plus, when I seem to go daily, less food seems to go to waste then making a big shopping trip every week. read more
