I went in today expecting a whole new Straub's. I was a little disappointed to see that it was just the front section that had been revamped. Apparently they needed a larger section to sell liquor and beer. They have also added a small outdoor eating area. Maybe they are still working on the rest of the store. read more

On my way to whole foods I decided to change my mind. I decided to go Straub's on Kingshighway. Define meat selection was awesome! We decided to settle on salmon burgers that were only five dollars per Patty. Upon venturing to the back we found more great selections such as chili, bakery items, and hot food in the deli case. Although a little pricey, I definitely think the value for your food is quite worth it. The workers wear gloves when serving your food and the store is very well put together and clean. read more

I feel a little shady sticking with my three star review for Straub's because I now stop by at least a couple times per week. If I rely on it so much, I need to bump it up to a four. I'm going to cover the highlights of my experiences in the form of do's and don't... 'cause you can easily go the wrong direction while shopping here. But it's pretty great neighborhood grocery store! Do: -Go to Straub's for a nice bottle of wine. They sell a wide range of both red and whites, and always have affordable (but not disgusting) options. It's perfect if you're heading to a dinner party and just need a quick bottle. -Stop by during lunch if you want a salad. The two best choices are the Asian chicken salad and the spinach bacon salad. The dressing that comes with the spinach bacon salad is a type of poppyseed dressing and it's sweet, tangy and delicious. -Double-check your produce. I've had good experiences while picking up all kinds of fruits and vegetables, but I've also had a few terrifying experiences with strawberries and mold. Just check whatever you're getting out thoroughly and you should be fine. -Go here if you need to get ingredients for a dinner you're having that night. If you don't want to go to a chain/corporate grocery store and you just need a few things, Straub's is your best friend. I recommend making some pasta... they have a really great selection of all kinds of sauces, including several straight from the Hill. -Visit the bakery. Just delicious... especially the red velvet gooey butter cake. They also sell Jilly's cupcakes, and if you don't see one you want, ask the great folks behind the counter because they have a whole other selection back there. -Check out their "meals for two." LIFESAVER. Don't: -Come here for a week's worth of groceries. Your wallet will NOT appreciate it... nor will the people standing in line behind you. We will actually hate you, very much. -Expect to being able to get a totally "healthy" lunch to go. You CAN get a salad and that should work, but the sandwiches are all pretty much made on thick white bread and chock full of meats. If you DO have time to wait, they will make you whatever you want and put it on wheat. The people at the deli are patient and always willing to customize your lunch. -Expect a giant organic selection, especially when it comes to microwave meals. Sigh. Straub's is quick and easy, just how I like my... grocery stores. I joke, people. :) But go visit! It's a great spot and the employees will cheer up your day. read more

Oh, dear. It's been nearly three years since I got chicken salad, and the brie and gorgonzola torte. Well, I fixed it today. The chicken salad has few ingredients, and they're regular things, so don't ask me why it's so good -- I have NO idea: chicken breast, Hellman's mayonnaise, lemon juice and spices. There's also celery, but it's not listed. My guess is the secret ingredients are the spices. They're not specified. So, my container today was 1.05 pounds for $12.59. I eat the chicken salad two ways: on celery and on crackers. Please do not make a sandwich with it. The chicken salad must be the star. Don't gunk it up with a big ol' wad of Wonder bread. The brie and gorgonzola torte does not list ingredients, so it all must be secret. But it certainly is out of this world tasty! My container today was .42 pounds for $6.30. I eat the torte two ways: on celery and on crackers. Yeah, there's a pattern here. These two, I shall eat judiciously. read more

I went here because Patt C has raved about their chicken salad, and it is so amazing, she is right!!! I ordered a pound and started thinking how I could get two pounds of this a week and live off it and create the chicken salad diet. The best discovery though, is the Greek lamb sausage. My husband scrambled some eggs and added some Cotswold cheese and this lamb sausage and it was heaven. We went to Whole Foods and they have a Morrocan lamb sauasage but it PALES in comparison. I hope they carry this forever. Another seasonal highlight there is the Peppermint Crack Bark they sell at the register. if you are there around the holidays, make sure to grab one. read more

Why oh why can't I go in a grocery store for what I come in for? Because Straub's has such an excellent selection that "normal stores" do not have. (But they do not have "normal prices either.") On my list was: Stuffed Porkloin and Citizen Kane Seasoning What I came out with is Ciabatta and all the stuff to make Tres Colores, Miss Huitton's cake, which is to die for, Some Nice Italian Wine (which is now my fav), and these amazing little jalapeno stuffed shrimp from the meat department! So if your looking for different or tad bit gourmet this is the place to go. Just make sure you go on a payday. read more

This review was prompted by the free range turkey I ordered for Thanksgiving. As many other reviewers have noted, the meat counter here is fantastic. If you're looking for a real butcher (and by that I mean, a man in a white apron who is insanely knowledgeable about meat and can procure such meat for you), Straub's is where you should go. Their free-range turkeys are great, and they're not obnoxiously expensive. They were even able to accommodate my request for half a turkey for my small dinner party, which was much appreciated. The rest of the store is nice, but as everyone already knows, not for your staples. The run of the mill items are just too expensive to make this your main grocery store. The back room, the deli/prepared foods/bakery section, is my favorite. There's a lot of great stuff back there, including the largest selection of Companion baked goods I've seen in a grocery store. However, I love it and here's why: -Great deli -Delicious pre-made desserts -It's a total neighborhood grocery store: I feel like I'm in the 1950's, what with the good service and dapper grocers. -They fulfill all my bourgeois needs, from kombucha to organic, gluten-free cookies. -I live a short walk away, so in many cases, convenience takes precedent over money management skills (it's like when you buy stupid, expensive shit at the airport just because it's right there and you're bored). I always feel good whenever I walk out of Whole Foods. Sure it's expensive, but the people are nice & the food is good. Whenever I walk out of Straub's, I feel like a complete dick. Yes, this place is expensive. Some of the prices are borderline ridiculous. Example-$8 for a box of Tampax....im not even joking. So, I NEVER come here for the basics. However, there are many things that I like about this store. 1. The meat Okay, so i don't eat meat any more but when I did I was happy I could come here and purchase some good quality cuts. 2. Prepared Foods I used to be obsessed with their chicken salad. I don't know what the hell about it is so good, but i sure ate my fair share of it. I will miss you, chicken salad. 3. Bakery Again, some items are too expensive but others are reasonable. 4. Convenience I live just down the block, so I am happy to have a store in walking distance. I would never buy all my shit here, but when i want to make a nice dinner, I have the option to get what I need. They do run some good deals on wine once in awhile. 5. Free samples My CWE dwelling friend and I often come here when we are walking around and get free samples. Don't buy anything, just eat several samples. This review is for a different Straubs, but much like other supermarkets, I have to assume that most Straubs are the same: Straub's manages combine the lack of selection of a NYC bodega, with the expensive prices of a Whole Foods (or any other specialty market) without as many upscale choices as I would expect. In other words, there's no reason to go here, ever. Meats are cheaper at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Schnucks. And there is a air of snobbishness which I don't understand. Straub's is notorious in St. Louis and somehow I have managed to skip out on the experience even though I have an overwhelming love for grocery stores. Sadly I think the true glory of Straub's is lost on me because of the high cost of most everything in the store. The quality of the meat, bakery, cheese and prepared item sections is very high, but you are most certainly going to pay for it. Also don't throw anything, but I was a little underwhelmed by my chicken salad experience. Straub's is great if you want a very specific item or something for a special occasion, but I won't be coming back on a day to day basis. Everyone I encountered was extremely helpful and friendly which you don't always get when you shop in an upscale grocery. Do they provide a good service? Yes. Friendly, helpful people? Absolutely. Are they a monopoly and know it? Without a shred of doubt. Their pricing is out of control. Asparagus is $7.99 a bunch. Seven-ninety-nine. Seafood...with tenuous freshness...is higher than anyone in the city. Nearly all their fruit is refrigerated...what does that translate to? Fear of not turning it over quickly enough. They have contracts with bakeries for that locavore vibe, but the breads go bad once you bring them home. Their freezer goods are well-expired, to boot. But here's the BEST part: Recently, I had to take a container of arugula back because I opened it the day after I purchased it & the manager said, "yeah, we're in the process of replacing our refrigerators." I said, "well, you've got stiff competition coming in soon." (A Whole Foods is being built three blocks from them...they've been the ONLY grocery store in the CWE for twenty-plus years.) Her candid & serious response, "Oh, they're NO competition." Love it. They're chicken salad is good, but not that good to keep me away from Whole Foods once it opens. I like this Straub's, from its convenient location (N of Barnes-Jewish Medical Center, NE of Forest Park) to its meat counter, to the wine aisle, to the Kaldi's coffee, to the B.R. Cohn olive oil (the Doobie Brothers manager, "takin' it to the streets"). Most of all, I like the deli, which, to someone making a quick selection at the meat counter, might be totally missed. You have to walk to the back of the store, and through the short connector, into the batcave of St. Louis delis. There you'll find great cheeses, fresh-baked breads, hot cooked foods, salads, side dishes, and scrumptious desserts (Batman wouldn't say "scrumptious," but Alfred might). Prices are on the high side, and my credit card would cringe if I carried out a cartload. But, to date, I never have had reason to regret a purchase. read more

Confession: this is my first time going to Straub's. I've had tons of great food, pre-made meals, and produce from here but never actually gone in! I was in the area and needed some orzo and a sandwich while I was there. The only orzo they had was $8 whole wheat/organic per box but I was desperate so I went with it. It wasn't very good but there selection in general was unique so props for them. The store itself seemed a little small but it did the job. The staff were friendly, too! My sandwich was bueno! I was starving and ate it in the car as I went about my busy day. Totally worth it. I don't know when I'll be back but I can see why Straub's gets a lot of love. Not the go-to store for basics (believe me, these are way over-priced), but I will say that this place has gourmet items that you won't find at the regular grocery store. If you're looking for specialty items, there's a good chance Straub's will have it. This place also has a great meat dept (the counter guys are really nice and helpful), and the quality of meat is MUCH better than Schnucks. Also, the prepared foods counter (including the bakery) has some pretty good items. Another bonus is that it's convenient for ppl in the CWE - there really isn't a great grocery store nearby that can compare. read more

What the others say is true. Straubs is not a place to do your everyday grocery shopping, but it is THE place to go for that hard to find specialty ingredient or for items you won't find anywhere else. For example, -The Wall of Pop/Soda: We're talking 8 varieties of root beer, 4 types of orange soda, green river, Dublin Dr. Pepper, whatever you can imagine. -The most extensive selection of specialty ice cream I have ever seen. -The Meat Department: I can't say enough about their meat department. Around the Holiday Season you can find PRIME meat and more hams than you can shake a stick at. I bought a USDA Prime Prime Rib Roast for Christmas that was out of this world. Otherwise they have burgers, sausages, and cuts of meat that nobody else in town carries. -The Deli Counter: Prosciutto cut razor thin, Kobe Corned Beef, Roast Beef that is a perfect medium rare. If you want to make the ultimate sandwich than this is your counter. Oh yea, their chicken salad is famous for good reason. Also some of the better fried chicken I have ever had. -Dry Goods: They probably carry 30 different types of barbecue sauce, a ton of hard to find salad dressings, specialty pickles, high quality pasta, and a crazy variety of mustards. The only thing that I have been consistently disappointed with is the quality of produce, so make sure to do your produce shopping somewhere else. Otherwise Straubs Rocks! read more

If you're a fan of salads, you MUST try their FRESH YELLOWFIN TUNA SALAD from the seafood department. Ingredients: Yellowfin Tuna - The main attraction. It's not like the tuna you get from the can, it's super smooth, so smooth you can spread it on bread with a knife, not because of the mayonnaise, but because the tuna is just THAT smooth. Mayonnaise - Just enough, not like those salads that are 50-50 mayonnaise to meat Sliced hard boiled eggs - The slices are a little big, diced eggs would've been better. Celery - Celery always evens out salads with a nice crunch & slight watery-ness. Spices - Possible? Couldn't quite make out the taste, but if there are then it's not an overpowering taste. Very suttle. It's $11.99/lb., but if you get 1/2 lb. it's about $6, which makes 3-4 sandwiches, depending on your portions. So, just to convince those who may think that spending $6 on tuna salad is pricey, here's the breakdown. $6 tuna / 4 sandwiches = $1.50 per sandwich. If this still sounds too pricey for you, all I have to say is that this is quality tuna, & you'd be missing out if you didn't try it at least once. Sidenote: If you want to splurge on bread, Companion's multi-grain sliced loaf is oh so fluffy & soft with a rich texture. How I Eat My Tuna: 1) Spread on bread 2) Spinach 3) Alfalfa sprouts 4) Avocado slices Extras according to preference: Mushrooms, tomatoes, etc. I think I eat too well as a lowly grad student. Many locals complain about prices here, but they are only marginally higher than the big boxes. And for that, you get a more eclectic selection and reliable quality in meats, fish, and produce. There's also a plethora of little touches like Oberweis milk with glass bottle exchange. Perhaps most importantly, you get a comfortable environment with cozy aisles, a clean store, friendly staff, and short lines. I've gotta like this place because it's walkable, a little trendy, and top of the line, but the "cool factor" is probably the biggest reason the Central West End Straub's is one of my favorite places in the area. Now I'm not much of a chef, but several of my more culinarily-skilled comrades swear by this place, saying it's perfect for specialty items and rare finds. Meat, prepared foods, and produce all cost an arm and a leg, but hey-- if you want the best, you gotta be willing to make the sacrifices, right? (Me, I make another sacrifice and go to Schnuck's, down the street. Come on, Diana, I've seen MUCH worse grocery stores!) They have a nice coffee assortment here, and something tells me that it's the same coffee that Coffee Cartel uses down the street (both offer a flavor called "Highlander Grog"). I'll have to swing by some day and pick some up. So far I haven't had much reason to shop here, but when I get invited to a fancy party or am planning on some high caliber entertaining, Straub's is gonna be my place. Meanwhile, I'll start carrying an empty telltale green-and-white Straub's bag as I walk around the neighborhood, fooling people into thinking I'm loaded enough to be a regular shopper. read more

Straub's is part of a small, local grocery store chain. This location is located just north of the Chase Park Plaza in the heart of the Central West End. Straub's is not as big as most grocery stores like Schnucks or Whole Foods but it seems to stock all of the essentials as well as having a great prepared food/deli/coffee section in the back. Straub's is famous for their Chicken Salad and their high quality meats. I'd recommend trying the chicken salad. It's very good. The wine and cheese selection is quite extensive as well here. Products tend to cost slightly more here than at other chain grocers in town but the service here is better than one usually finds elsewhere. Straub's also does a good job of carrying local goods. They have their own private parking lot off of Kingshighway in which they sometimes sell BBQ from in the summer. Overall, this is a fine grocery store to shop at for most of what one needs if money is not a concern. I just hope the store continues to do well after Whole Foods opens up down the street. read more

I wish this place could be a little cheaper, but for a small, neighborhood grocery, it is exactly what you want. My boyfriend and I get meat here and the butcher is always helpful for what cuts will be best for what we are cooking. The hot soups are perfect for a night you don't want to cook, and the sushi is pretty good and priced similar to anywhere else you would get it. I have never had a bad experience at this grocery store and am thankful for it when I remember an ingredient I need at rush hour and don't have to go to Schnucks. I have three grocery stores within walking distance (thank you, Central West End), and I like all three for different things. But Straub's deli counter is wonderful (try the Cowboy Caviar), and their staff in the whole store is outstanding. At the deli, they recognize me (even with a mask), and start filling my favorites as I walk up to the counter. Today, the check out clerk noticed that one of my items was expired (something I had failed to check). She stopped what she was doing, and fetched me an unexpired one. Who does that? I had high expectations when I was driving by here I slammed on the brakes and made a quick decision to check it out and grab what I needed for dinner. A lot of my fellow yelpers that I respect and adore love this place. I just cannot join the love fest. I found it to be dirty, dark, a little stinky at the seafood meat counter and over priced. I can see that this has such potential to be a little nostalgic gem of a neighborhood gourmet grocer.....but they need to make it sparkle and shine....also is it really a necessity to have a security person sitting in front watching the parking lot. We came here for one purpose only - Kobe corned beef (only $6.99 a pound, go figure!) Not only did we succeed with our purchase, but they had also had some already cooked up and samples were offered. That was a plus. As for the rest of the store, there were some "oh cool, they have X, Y, or Z." But there was also "Holy crap, $3.79 for a Lean Cuisine?!!?" So, yeah, it sucks if you try to use this place for your daily grocery shopping, but if you're looking for some specialty items (especially meats), you're in luck. read more

Straub's was my neighborhood grocery store, and it's one of the places in St. Louis that I truly miss. While prices at Straub's are high compared to chains, there are a few things you'll get here you won't find other places. The butcher's counter is phenomenal, with specialty items made by the butchers themselves: smoked apple sausages, stuffed chicken breasts and hand-ground low fat beef. They also have smoked ham bones for slow-cooked white beans, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a friendlier and more helpful staff. The other Straub's plus is their bakery and deli section. Cakes, pies, cookies, pasta salads and even heat/serve entrees like eggplant parmigiana and chicken Kiev, this entire area will make you hungry upon entering, so eat before you go. One word of caution, and I hope this doesn't sound entirely crass, but watch out for the parking lot. People in over-sized luxury SUVs sometimes come a little too close to hitting hapless college students. And be nice to the guy in the guard house - he's a fixture, and is very funny if you take the time to talk with him. read more

Whenever I visit STL, I never come here, lol. However, this time I did. I went specifically for the Ooee, Goee Butter Cake. Lawd, this cake is good. I got the big one so I could take it back to Atl and share with friends. I cut them a slice with some Butter Pecan Walnut Ice Cream and heard nothing but, "um, oh, wow, yum, where is this from again?" Then I heard spoons scraping the bowl. Now its gone, I need another, but have to hit my goal weight first. I may not wait that long. Getting back to Straub's, the place is clean. I have had other food from there, but just usually never go in the store. It's like a mini Fresh Market, STL Style. I like it and will visit again. I wonder if they ship out of state. The service is always great here and the check out lines tend to stay short. I was worried about this place when Whole Foods opened, but this place is going strong. I had ordered food online for a Baby shower, the entire process was was quick and easy. I called a day before picking it up to request that the pasta be heated since I was headed straight to the party after work they were super nice on the phone and agreed to have it hot and ready. When I arrived I went to pick everything up at the deli counter. The man that assisted me was great (I feel bad I don't remember his name) the pasta was in the oven but the rest of the food was boxed up and ready to go. The nice man mentioned before, also carried the pasta out to the car for me due to it being hot. I was in the store for less than 5 min. The food was great! Expensive but the quality is evident. If you to come here for one thing, it would have to be for the fresh seafood and meat. Straub's has fresh scallops and mussels, not frozen for a second! One of the workers spent 10 minutes helping me separate out dead mussels from live ones so I was able to go home with a full sack of FRESHNESS. This shows both care and knowledge- what we need more of in grocery stores! One of the beef cuts I use constantly in asian cooking is flank steak. You can't find this cut anywhere in Saint Louis except Straub's and Wholefoods with the former actually having a better price. Walking to the back of the store is where one can find bread, pre-made salads, and desserts. There is a great stock of freshly baked bread to pair with lovely pasta salads. Personally, I love the sourcream potato salad they have which tastes like a healthy potato chip- can't get any better! read more

Yes, Straub's is pricier than Shop and Save, and I would never in a million years recommend someone should go there to buy milk, eggs, frozen pizza, soda pop, cereals, flour, beans, dried pasta, etc. But for anything where quality varies heavily that doesn't come in a package or is more rare, Straub's is awesome. Of course you're paying more for meat and fish; they're high-quality meats prepared by knowledgeable, friendly butchers. They usually have kobe/wagyu patties and fresh Chilean Sea Bass. The deli/prepared foods counter is also a notch better than the other places in taste, and well worth the buck extra you'll pay on anything. And the bakery - the deserts and bread products are excellent and have rivals among the other grocery stores. The cheese supply is bested only by a few Dierberg's locations that win on quantity alone. The fruits and vegetables have better quality and almost as much variety as a larger store. The selection of finer dried and frozen goods not found in the other large stores should be appreciated as well. They have some soft drinks you may find at places like Koppermans, but certainly not at Schnucks, and the wine selection is spectacular for a place this size. All in all, yes, you're going to pay 5% more for the most comparable items at another store, and for bulk shopping for a family of four on a budget, this is not the place to go. But for select quality and a friendly staff, Straubs is a wonderful luxury to have. read more

When I walked in to this Straubs it is a stark comparison to the store in Webster Groves, but that is not a bad thing. I was instantly taken back about 20 years and to a small town in Southern Colorado. It reminded me of the small hometown grocery store that I used to frequent when I was a kid. As others have said, the prices tend to be a bit high, but I think the quality, at least on most things, is also higher. I was really impressed with their deli counter, they had so many things that looked amazing. I could buy dinner from their deli counter for a couple weeks just trying out all the delicious looking items. Their selection of cheeses was nice, the desserts made your mouth water just looking at them and the two we got were very, very good. I would definitely not consider doing my everyday shopping at Straubs, but if I'm looking for a specialty item, or something from their Deli counter, I would not hesitate to stop in and try something yummy. The mention of Kobe burgers might be enough to get me to venture back in there in the near future. read more

Newly remodeled and updated, the prices however have stayed the same. The store isn't too terribly big but for its size they basically offer all the necessities it's a neighborhood grocer for the upper class. A great meat department with steaks, fish, ham, and any cut you'd desire; i've never used it but I would imagine you could find what you need. They have a decently sized produce section with organic and farm fresh alternatives, pretty much anything you'd need for a quick meal. Their deli department is most likely their life-blood aside from the alcohol section. Fresh meals are prepared throughout the day ranging from rotisserie chicken served hot, to cold sandwiches. Chicken fingers, fries, fried chicken, pastas, twice baked potatoes, vegetables, and sushi are at your fingertips either served hot or cold. If they don't have it they will prepare for you in under 15 minutes will you continue to shop. Whenever I go to Straub's I like to play a game, what's the most expensive mundane item I can find in the store. Which aisle has the $7.50 bag of potato chips? The $13 canned fish? The only thing I've ever really seen on sale there were some goldfish that were on clearance for $1.50. It is just now 10 p.m. and I am sitting outside of straub's and it is closed I've been here for the last 5 minutes and security told me that management said shut it down.
