I emailed from their website. After 2 days of no response I called. When I advised the girl who answered about my online inquiry , she was adamant they always respond and even asked if emailed the right email address (I have no clue how I couldn't from their website). She didn't want to help me over the phone, and that was fine because her attitude was so crap, I didnt even wanna go there. I told her I had the confirmation email even from THEIR site. So instead of providing me customer service she told me forward that to them and they'll respond. First off, I'm not in lighting. So as a person who was in need of renting lights for a teenagers birthday party, to get an email talking about 2500 deposit or 10000 in insurance policy, etc. for a light kit I found at several other places for $80 a day and not all this drama and tension. Glad she turned me off with her rude ass. Now.. the way life works.. I do work in the entertainment business for one of the largest networks. I will be sure to pass word to never mention this place around our offices for any productions or side projects. read more

This is a small business at it's best: experts at what they do, friendly, affordable, and willing to go the extra mile to make a customer happy. I've rented from them on numerous occasions, from cameras, to lenses, to tripods, to sliders, to batteries. In every case, they've delivered what I asked for, at a great price. On one occasion, I rented at 5DII for a fashion shoot, and upon arriving at the shoot, the hot shoe on the camera stopped working, and wouldn't fire my remote strobes. Without the camera, I would have been in bad shape. I called Billy at Stray Angel, and when we couldn't troubleshoot the problem, he couriered another camera body to me asap. They were very nice and their equipment was kept in good quality, but they didn't have all the equipment we asked for when we went to pick it up and changed some of the equipment like the tripods, without asking us if it was okay. Full disclosure: this place is two blocks from my house and there isn't much competition in the neighborhood. That being said, I would happily drive a distance to keep their business. The staff at Stray Angel are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and most importantly cater to the indie community. They know budgets are tight, and they are there to help you hit those numbers. A friend found them online and when we realized that they were so close to my house with very fair rental prices, I hoped we had found a winner. I was shooting my student film at UCLA when we reached an audio crossroads. like most student crews we all were incredibly well-versed on visuals but needed a lot of help with audio. We came to Stray Angel and I told them I was shooting with a DSLR. This is my fault for not doing quite enough research but we rented two of their lav kits then arrived at our shoot at 4am and found we had no way of monitoring our audio since DSLRs have no headphone output. There was nothing we could do for that shoot so we got pretty bad audio, then by the time our evening shoot rolled around that night I had already made it back to Stray Angel to rent the device we needed to monitor the mics while we shot, which worked marvelously and the team was very helpful in dealing with me and my lack of knowledge! However, now that I'm in the editing room I'm finding that the mics picked up a lot of background noise, which was exactly what I was trying to avoid in using lavs in the first place! So if you're shooting in a louder environment I would advise scaling up from Stray Angel's basic lav kit and investing a little more into your project. Overall though, the team there was just as helpful as I could have expected given the many moving parts in my production. Normally you just get what you pay for technically and nothing more, but here the products matched the prices but came with superior customer service and the feel of working with a small business, which made me feel quite taken care of throughout the harrowing process of learning audio on the fly. read more

After reading the reviews below, I must have called on an off-day -- no hoops were jumped through, no one was friendly, and felt like I was annoying the agent I dealt with by daring to call rather than just email. Was looking for a west side rental house, but got little support. Just wanted to see if they had some things in stock and ask some general equipment questions, but was told (brusquely) to just send an email and someone would get back to me quickly. This is the production rental house to rent from, not only if you're on the westside but greater LA area. Staff is super knowledgable and friendly. I've been using stray angel since 2010, and they have grown into a fully functional company. They also offer a lot of extras to their clients the other big rental houses do not. Haven't even gotten my gear yet and I love these guys already. I have this shoot coming up this weekend, very important (aren't they all?) and I had a set of hard to find, in-demand lenses confirmed. Then, the shoot got changed and I had to cancel with five days to go. They were suuuuper cool about it, very understanding. I wanted to like Stray Angel Films because they're located near our office and logistically it would make sense to give them business. I had a small project that needed to rent grip gear and a van. Called SAF to place an order on their "Sprinter Van Grip Package" and it went smooth as butter. Arrived at the location to pick up the gear and the employees seemed to be busy on their phone. Made eye contact with a few employees as they hung up the phone but it seemed like I was an inconvenience. Waited about 15 more minutes and finally approached a female worker who was really nice and put me in touch with the right person. The kid that helped was extremely nice as we went over the gear checklist. He brought me to the back to show me the Sprinter van. The van was a mess. SAF didn't even bother to clean it out from a previous job. We're talking about water bottles, soda cans and left over documents laying around. The van's gas meter reads a quarter full and there was no organization except a shelf that was clamped onto the van's wall for the gear. SAF has some great prices but the saying is true, what you pay for is what you get. I wouldn't come back. Luckily there are plenty of other rental houses in Los Angeles. read more
