OUTSTANDING! I walked in to this shop - a few minutes after posted closing time - and was greeted by the friendly, very knowledgeable owner. He looked at the shattered glass cover on the telephoto zoom lens of my Canon camera; disappeared into the back room; and 5-7 minutes later, reappeared. He had replaced the broken glass, tested the lens for functionality, and handed it back to me with a grin. All for a very nominal fee. I totally expected to leave the camera for repair and be told I could pick it up 2-3 weeks later. But no! So fast, so reasonable and such a surprise to have it repaired so quickly and economically. Every photographer or camera enthusiast needs a reliable, reasonable, and accessible camera repair shop and that's exactly what I found when I went to Steve's Camera Service. I was out on the ocean doing some whale watching, and the zoom I was using got splashed a little bit with saltwater. Not dunked or doused, but wet enough to cause some exterior wear and tear that I didn't like looking at. I was referred to Steve's by a friend of mine who has been going here for years to get his cameras serviced and fixed. I recently got a Leica M3 but it had been sitting since 2008 and needed a full CLA to get back into full working order. I took it here and was immediately greeted by Paul at the front who took a look at my camera and brought it back to Steve. It's surprising, but there aren't that many active camera repair and service shops in LA. My case involved needing a diagnostic for my Sony A7 IV after a fall. The impact hit the protective umbrella, but the lens and camera also suffered damage, although they continued to work. Since I am very particular about my equipment, I needed an expert opinion on its condition. I am extremely grateful to Steve's Camera Service for their honesty and kindness. The technician quickly examined my camera, took a few test shots, and with his extensive experience, concluded that the camera is 99% fine. For me, that was more than enough. He didn't charge me for this!!! This is doubly pleasant and motivates me to return to him in the future. I also want to add that I carefully considered different services and chose Steve's Camera Service for many reasons: 1) they are conveniently located near the center 2) they were ready to take my camera the same day (other services either don't work with Sony or have a two-week wait) 3) reviews - I thoroughly reviewed them, and the negative reviews didn't have substantial arguments against using their service and were written a long time ago. I went to Samy's down the street for a question about my film camera, and their worker suggested I check out Steves. The shutter release on my Nikon was stuck so I couldn't take any pictures. I explained my situation, and was helped immediately. To my surprise, the worker at Steves took my camera in the back, cleaned my batteries, and had it working right away! He didn't charge me at all which was great. I told him that I paid $40 to get it fixed once, so it was really nice of him to do it for free and so fast. Steve's camera service is definitely a place to try for any camera/lens cleaning/repairs you might have. The outside does look a little odd, with steel bars and whatnot, but the service is top notch. I've had Steve evaluate some older cameras of mine to see their condition and his answers are always thorough and detailed. There's also Paul, and he's great - I had a manual 1.7f m4/3 lens that was in need of a deep cleaning and Paul went ahead and cleaned it and wrapped it up to prevent any further damage for free! He didn't have to do that; I needed that lens for a shoot, but he said "don't worry about I'll take care of it for you" and some minutes later the glass looked like new. I've tried their competitors (Youxin, Lecia Service in NJ, etc ) and I keep concluding that Steve and Paul is the best Leica repair team in the US. Legit. They've repaired, CLA'ed, restored, and fixed lenses and bodies that are brand new and over 50 years old -- and in both cases, all of the repairs have been done expeditiously, perfectly, and at a great price. I started coming here about 5 years ago to repair old vintage cameras. Price and service was great. Recently got back into cameras and had a Leica lens that needed glue for a mount ring that got loose. Price seems to have went up to $295 for tightening and applying some glue to the other ring where the lens hood mounts to. I was like ok whatever I know they do good work here, I guess I can stomach it and I had an upcoming trip I wanted to use the lens on. I got a "new" second hand lens. The focusing was a bit stiff so I went in for a quote on some getting the focus ring lubed. $450 was todays price. I think they have priced me out of coming back. I can send it to Leica for roughly the same price. Called another shop (out of state) that almost everyone on the Leica forums recommended and got it quoted at $100 plus return shipping and the same turn around time. Edit. Changing the review to 2 stars (instead of 1) because if money isn't an option for you and if you're in a pinch then this is still a good place to go. read more

This place seems solid This is my STORY: I dented my camera, and it wasn't usable. I brought in the store and it took them about 2 minutes to realized that there was someone at the front. I wasn't expecting too much since it's just a small shop. But then they started working on my camera with a charge of $45. I get an email about 2-3 days later saying they can't fix it, and they can send it off to sony themselves for $65. I was like 65!?!?! What!? But yeah... it ended up costing me $45 to send it so it wasn't too bad. It was just a $20 service, so maybe i should have gone with it, because I had trouble sending it to Precision Camera. But I'm just sad that $45 went to waste and now I have to pay about $800 on top to fix my camera. Just not the best experience, but they aren't the worst. I'm sure they can fix your camera, but this was just my experience. read more

My Canon repeatedly displayed "no card" no matter what card I put in it. A very nice guy at Target tried three different SD cards (different brands, different memory capacities) and none of them worked so off to Yelp and Steve's I went! I was helped by Kyle in the front office. Nice guy. Took my camera and gave me a receipt. Called me the next day to inform me my camera was absolutely fine and working with their trial SD card. I was shocked! I bought the same SD card they use and the camera is in perfect working order and here's the best part of it all...Steve's Camera Service didn't charge me a cent. Absolutely not worth your time or effort when there are compelling alternatives elsewhere. After months of trying to call Steve's Camera to get someone to pick up and answer my questions, I finally got someone to pick up and tell me hours, talk about my lenses in a bit more detail, and invite me into the shop. Great. So I went. I hate visiting small businesses without calling first to make sure they are open, particularly when it's LA where traffic can make or break your day. When I arrived, I had a great conversation with the guy at the desk. He was friendly and helpful, and I booked three lenses for evaluation at $25 a lens. Great, no big deal, excited to finally find a local choice for servicing my lenses. I was told I'd get a call back in a day or two to inform me of a cost estimate for cleaning and lubrication. A week passes, no call. I finally have to call in and nudge them to give me an estimate. What I got back was totally unexpected. To clean, lubricate and adjust each lens, I was quoted $295 (!) for my Minolta and $395 each (!) for two Canons. Just as a point of reference: these are vintage manual lenses that have been around for ages, so this isn't some crazy modern weather-sealed lens with tons of electronics or circuitry to sift through in order to get to the lens elements or to CLA it. I bought each lens for under $100. The service would cost me a grand total of $1085. Turnaround: about two weeks. If I had no other point of reference, I would have thought this was market price and timeline. It's not. There are a handful of vintage lens experts around the country who charge less than $100 per lens for a cleaning - I know because I've sent lenses and camera bodies to them in the past to get it done. Furthermore, some of these experts do SUCH good work that a service done by them on a vintage lens or camera considerably increases its resale value on the market. My go-to guy in Massachusetts would charge $240 total for all three of these lenses based on his standard price list - and he rarely deviates from his price list unless he needs to order parts and install them or repair them. So for less than the cost of cleaning ONE lens at Steve's, my normal camera serviceman (and one of legendary status) would be able to do all three lenses. Oh, and to top it all off - his turnaround time has been much faster than what I was quoted at Steve's. Steve - if you're reading this - I'm sorry that my experience went this way, but I simply cannot convince myself to pay your quoted rates for a simple lens CLA given that there are other world-class experts in the US that do top-tier work for way less than half the price in the same amount of time or less. read more

Camera: Canon 5D Mark II Lense: 24-105mm The Story: So I was at the beach with the family and all of a sudden a wave came and started to pull my camera bag into the Pacific. I raced to grab it (Camera in hand) I lost my footing and dove into the salty sandy water of the Pacific! To make things worst the sand was VERY fine, almost like powder. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! The lense and half the body was submerged in saltwater with quite a bit of very refined sand. I quickly pulled it out and it looked like a mess! Went home after 2hrs on the road carefully removed all the sand and instinctively checked the internet to look for solutions which gave different advice, one which called for immediately rinsing it off with distilled water. Tried it, dried it and was greeted with an "error" screen. Time to look for help!! Luckily I met another professional Photographer (Griffin) who referred me to Steve's Camera. Store: Like a hole in the wall camera shop with tons of old cameras on display from the 35mm days. Asked if they were for sale and turns out they were ALL damaged by SALTWATER! My mind started to think the inevitable, will my 5D be among the dead 35mm on the shelf??? Staff: Friendly and reassuring but no guarantee until they took him apart. Process: Notified me within a day as to an estimate of $700 for the body and $580 for the lense. Still cheaper than buying a replacement but most importantly IT CAN BE FIXED! Put a deposit of half and the rest upon pick up. (Pay with cash for an extra saving) Result: 2 weeks later it came back CLEAN and JUST LIKE NEW!! Thanks Steve's Camera for saving my baby!! I've gone to Steve's twice in the past. Once for my point-and-shoot camera (the lens had some sand on it which prevented the lens lid protectors from closing), and another time for my DSLR (the interior mirror had some dust specks which showed when I took pictures). I believe I got my camera's back in a week. The money spent was well worth getting my cameras fixed and into working condition. For the record: I found out this place existed by way of a Samy's Camera staff member. When I had needed my point-and-shoot camera looked at, I went to Samy's where a staff member told me Samy's Camera could send the camera back to the manufacturer or that I could take my camera to Steve's to get looked at.
