I went in with my Remington 1100. I needed a screw/bolt for the scope mount. They were helpful and fixed it for me for free. Additionally I was not sure if I needed an hour or 30 mins on the range. They sold me 30 mins and said if I need more I can pay on the way out. I brought in my own slugs and fired 20 rounds at 50 yards. On a side note the one guy who has a beard and wears glasses is extremely knowledgeable about firearms. Great place and awesome range. Not many places you can shoot 50 yards indoors. read more

Been to double action to shoot numerous times all have been freindly, positive experiences up untill today... #1 First of all there was a group of people in the lane next to me that had their rifles slung and were walking behind people while they were shooting... it just made me feel very uncomfortable and almost unsafe especially because they were not very disciplined in how they handled there firearms and u could tell they were not responsible gun owners... this is also against the rules. #2 A chubby old range safety officer, probably in his mid 50s or 60s entered the range and began screaming at almost everyone in the range for shooting too fast when there was no rapid fire by anyone... He stated that there must be two seconds in between shots which the website says one second. Safety must be a top priority however he handled the situation very rudly and unprofessionaly, his reaction was not warrented esspecially when there were other more serious problems going on in the range. Not to mention he wears nothing to identify himself as the range officer so at first I thought he was another shooter.This range officer is purley unacceptable and its a shame because the other staff are great... this guy needs to be fired because its obvious he is the problem in the store and it would be better without him. read more

All killer/no filler. These guys have been great to me. Range isn't Vegas-spectacular, but it achieves precisely what I want. Completed my CPL by a few very cool staff, far more complete and enjoyable than any others I have heard about. Gunsmith installed and sighted my night sights for very reasonable price and well done. Staff is friendly, always up front, knowledgable, not cocky like so many other shops. Considering upper level pistol classes, maybe even tournies. I'm relatively new and eager to learn but DA has made me feel confident and comfortable with my firearms, that is *literally* priceless. read more

Even if you have a closer range or shop to you Double Action is worth the drive. They have a large selection of pistols, rifles, and accessories. When it comes to customer service they are wonderful. Their ranges are also very nice. The staff is great and boot anyone who is a danger or annoyance (rapid fire) to you. read more

While visiting family during the Thanksgiving holiday my brother-in-law took myself, my son and my neice to the range. We all had a positive experience . The employees were polite and curteous. Service was good as well. Unfortunately I had left my hearing and eye protection in Texas, however was able to use the range equpment at no extra charge. This is, by a significant margin, my favorite range to shoot in the Metro-Detroit area. They seem to watch the patrons a lot closer than other ranges and don't tolerate any behaviors that would be annoying or unsafe to other shooters. Plus, despite being an older range it's always clean and you're not tripping over brass. Even when they're busy they do a great job of moving you through. Ammo prices are a little on the higher side but they almost always have what you need, even in the current environment of shortages and increased demand. Nice selection of firearms too and the staff is always happy to chat and share their opinion. read more

I love to shoot and I like Double Action much better then that place on Woodward which I won't name. Now that everyone is worried about the new gun laws Double Action is very busy may be too busy. For the most part the people there are very very good. Sheri i informed and excellent customer service. Ammo is hard to get so you may want to bring some with you. Shooting is a very serious matter so the folk at Double Action and may seem unfriendly but there are lives at stake. They need to do some updates and a good cleaning would be nice but its a gun range. read more

Nice place and nice people. I was new to this range and everyone was very helpful getting me situated with the range and explaining the lay of the land. ammo was priced as expected and the range time was cheap enough. I was comfortable enough with the people and their knowledge based that I would recommend them to anyone in the area. the only thing I would improve would be the sales team, even though I have a ton of guns I would have bought another 9mm if someone even asked me if I wanted to see the one that I was fixed on for 3 minutes in the case. I have been to Double Action twice now. Once about a year and a half ago and once today. Totally different experiences. The first time i went i was lucky and a young lady with short hair was extremely helpful. Today, not so much. I Went to Double Action early today fully intent on comparing a few guns and purchasing a compact handgun. I entered a bit early, hoping their wouldn't be a crowd and i could get a bit of advice on what to purchase. Now, i don't know a lot about guns so it helps to have a friendly and engaging staff. Unfortunately, the 2-3 people behind the counter were far to busy chatting with each other to notice me standing directly in front of them. Not once was i asked if i needed assistance, if i wanted to look at anything... etc. All it would have taken for them to get a sale today was to simply ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I WAS IN THE STORE. After spending about ten minutes being ignored, i left and called a friend who had a similar experience with DA. He suggested a place a 9 and Ryan (won't name it lest someone thinks im just running Double Action down to promote someplace else) , chatted with two nice gentlemen and purchased my firearm. It cost a little more, but i consider that the price of paying for excellent customer service. Bottom line, i am more than happy to go back and try the range out and observe if this was just one bad experience, or if they generally treat people this way. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of attention and if i were the owner, i would be upset at a lost sale. My first and LAST time ever doing business with Double Action. It's been over 2 weeks and I'm STILL waiting on my stripped lower to be transferred from Arizona. I called the shop in AZ and they say that they sent it weeks ago. I understand with the political climate they may be swamped, but over two weeks for an FFL transfer? C'mon! After reading through the reviews, I was hesitant to walk in since I am a complete novice and have never owned a gun. However, I decided to see for myself since it was in a convenient location. I am so glad I did! What I found was a staff that was so willing to help and answer my long list of "stupid" questions. The lovely and talented Sherry took so much time to assist me in a way that made me feel as if she had no other cares in the world. (she happens to be beyond busy so don't bother her;) Sean has helped me in handling, assembling, disassembling and cleaning my new firearm with patience and expertise. I still suck, but he's awesome! MO, the gunsmith, is fantastic and knows more about guns than the Lone ranger!! or even Plaxico Burress LOL All other staff members (don't know all the names) have been tremendously helpful! Bottom line is highly recommend Double Action for purchasing a firearm, the range, instruction/classes, and special orders. Oh and they have a bas a$$ live fire simulator!!! Very piss poor service. Bought a pistol from them in November paid full price even though it was missing a magazine. They said two weeks it would be in well it has been almost 5 and I still have no magazine. They said it was CZ's fault. I called CZ an they are plenty stocked. Double Action is a joke. I have found the staff friendly and knowledgable. I just read that the going rate for 9mm range ammo is $30. Holy Crap. That would stop me dead in my tracks. My biggest gripe is the safety violations I see that go unnoticed and/or unaddressed. You can't be a range officer and run a cash register too. I was there about six weeks ago and noticed that gun prices were as bad as Gander Mtn. which is often $75-$100 more than the going rate. I shoot twice per week and buy 4 guns per year. I have been there several times but got tired of paying $14 for a half hour of pistol range time. They have a membership program, and if you shoot a lot you may save some money. Target on woodward is just as close to me and I have been going there lately. It is only $10 for a half hour. DA is a big store and great place to find just about anything you need to fit your shooting needs. The staff seems to know their guns but are quite busy and do not have time to shoot the breeze. I brought in a 1960's Remington 1100 in pristine condition, and wanted a scope mounted for deer hunting.They can't drill and tap, so they talked me into a reciever mount. I'm new to shooting as of a few months ago. I have been to the store/range about 6 times and everyone has always been helpful. My first time at the range, I asked for some instruction on how to shoot my pistol (that I had purchased elsewhere and never fired) and they were more than happy to give me a quick lession. I have been back to the range serveral times since and purchased ammo and new sights for my Glock 22 and have always received good service. read more

I wonder what type of person downgrades the staff here. They must show up angry. I took up handguns again 1 year ago and mostly use DA. I have now purchased 4 guns from them and will probably buy another and obtain lifetime membership for the range discounts. Not every staff person has been as nice as I would hope for, but 90% of the time I have been very pleased. Al discounted a service fee for my son's old .22 rifle. He also donated quite a bit to a local high school auction. Good people in a unique business! read more

I received my CPL training at this facility last year, and was impressed at their knowledge and concern for safety. They even boasted they were one of two reputable places to buy a gun in Michigan. I returned there today for practice with some family members, I was given (for a rental) a 38 revolver which resembled a gun from the old westerns my husband watches. My husband was with me, and mentioned he hadn't handled a weapon since the army, and the tall, balding older man in registration said, "well we don't have any muskets." How rude! In the range, I shot off a round of ammo, and my Wyatt Earp gun literally fell apart into 3 pieces! The staff's response to me was "Well after 400 rounds they might need tweaking". Geeeez... he got out his screwdriver, tightened the screw and handed it right back to me! (safely in the Tupperware container-got to give him some credit). I have a real concern someone is not doing their job of maintaining these weapons, and today, the safety they were boasting about last year just went right out the window in my opinion. read more

For the area this is probably the best option that I know of considering it is an indoor range the hours have become more sporadic and they close a lot earlier then most ranges now but I do know the owner is getting older and they either don't want to or don't have to stay open as much .they are closed quite frequently .I have been to the range numerous times over the years and have always had good experiences but it is definitely the old school range .they have a full archery range pistol range and rifle range it is one of the few full service shops still around that you can get supplies for reloading multiple holsters and a good gunsmith I will say the easiest way to describe this place is if you used to go shooting with your dad the walls and ceilings are yellow from the years of nicotine with all the guys smoking behind the counter the owner al used to sit at the rifle range side with a scowl on his face and look mildly imposing once you got to know him he was a big teddy bear the one thing that I grew to respect about this place and it takes a lot for me to say is they are honest unlike most ranges they do not fill in their lack of knowledge with what they do not know with BS if al did not know an answer he would say I don't know but call me tomorrow and I'll have an answer for you this is extremely rare in this line of business unfortunately and when you come across this level of honesty you learn to appreciate and respect it. the only thing I would say is they always been kind of high priced .Especially with new ranges popping up a lot lately when inexperienced staff starts to fill in the blank with a assumptions and you have novice shooters looking for genuine guidance this can be catastrophic as long as you're not looking for the Ritz this is a good choice read more

I have been to this range on two occasions, the 1st time I was greeted by a gentlemen that was helpful and didn't mind " working" with a somewhat new shooter. The second time was a differant story, as I was leaving the range an employee asked me a question, but I did not hear her. Instead of getting my attention and asking again, she decided to get mouthy with me. A couple people around the counter got a big kick out that. I guy standing next to me told me he had the same problem with her, rude and chippy. $1,800 in new gun sales has just walked out of the door. II don't have a problem with the no rapid fire rule, this is a gun range and the rules need to be followed. But I will not spend my money at a place where I am treated with disrespect. read more

i like the range its decent and the rifle range is 50 yards (150 feet) so you cant beat that. unlike other people(due to loudness of rifles) i dont like that the rifle and pistol ranges are separate because most of my range visits involve shooting both pistol and rifles. the range is the most expensive in town. close quarter tactical (which is a drive) is brand new, nicer and better and is even much cheaper. anyway you can bring in your own ammo which is a plus and a must for me, due to overpriced gun stores. the selection on guns is good but not far from great. guess it depends on what your are looking for. they do have a great selection on accessories. pricing....all local guns shops are overpriced but their pricing is very bad, in fact ill call it the worst in the metro Detroit area. i live close by and sometimes use their rifle range. so i look at some of their prices. compared to almost every other local shops they are overpriced.(i have been to them all) If you compare them to online dealers like cheaperthandirt, grabagun, and budsgunshop their prices make me want to puke. ill truly feel bad for the people buying from them. Now this isnt on every gun in the shop but for example they have a springfield xd sub comapct for $539. target sports has it for much less and i have seen them online for $399. thats a lot more money, 30% (yes online you have to transfer thru an FFL and pay a fee but you save on sales tax so its a wash.) i saw an m&p that was overpriced similarly. really im just saying do your homework before buying from them. you do get a long range membership(6 months i think) when you buy a gun from them. i dont know the details and i think it just brings their range prices down to normal pricing. i will give them some credit i looked at some of their accessories/optics and the pricing was fair. Overall id say try them out but i think you will find out there id better places around. read more

Let's start off i am not from Detroit area. My girlfriend lives up in Detroit. I found this range online and prices where good. My first time there things where good till a guy who i could tell and never shoot a gun before came in with a rental. Not a single worker came in with him to show him how to chamber the weapon or clear jams if he experience one. Which he did a couple of times which i had to help. The guy listened and i monitored him and thing went ok. But the next time i was there four young guys walked in with a ar15 rental. Yet again you could tell no experience with the weapon and no worker to show them. They load the magazine put it in the gun at the back table which is a no no. Then proceeded to wave it around flipping it side to side trying to figure out how to release the bolt in the process pointing a loaded gun at everyone in the place. I stopped them and helped them and explain proper gun safety with always keeping weapon down range. They then after every shot started to pass the gun which i stopped them again. I had to stop these guys more then i should have. For over 10 mins and never once had a worker come in. I cut my range time short because i was worried about the people i was with. When I approached them at the counter about they just said well we watch the camera and you should have just came out and said something. I laid into then for another 3min and not one guy at the counter put on eyes and ears to go talk to those guys. When i left there i was shaking from thinking about all the bad possibilities that could have happen. Not till i had a beer was i better. read more

First time shooting there in years and will never go back. I am use to a range that allows rapid fire. When we went there today, I was never informed of the rules. I take responsibility for not reading all the rules posted close enough and did not see that rapid fire was not allowed. I was about halfway through my time there, and I always do a rapid fire drill as part of my exercise. When I did it, the owner of all people came up. He stated, "Look at rule #3, no rapid fire." I said, "I apologize sir, will not happen again." If that had been the end of it, this review will not be written as I take responsibility for not carefully reading all the rules. However, he proceeded to say, "If you do it again, you are out of here. If you want to f!@k around, do it at your own F!@king place. We take s!@t like that seriously and don't have time to deal with f!@kers like you." That is no way to treat a paying customer. On top of that, there were several other guys in the range that I believe were his "buddies" doing multiple rule violations (i.e. couple guys uncasing guns outside of the booth, another guy had a loaded gun leaning against the side of the booth pointing up to the ceiling) in front of the owner and he did not say a word-I guess there are double standards there. Again, I take responsibility for breaking the no rapid fire rule. However, belittling your customers is not how you handle those situations. Talk firmly and clearly, but don't go around dropping f-bombs at them. Be professional. And since the owner can't even be professional, my money will be going elsewhere. read more

I have bought many guns and had one shipped here that I bought out of state. The only reason I am writing a review is the really bad one I read above. I am not affiliated with the place and have never written a review of any kind in the past, I signed up with Yelp today. I must say, whenever I walk into any gun shop I do not feel very comfortable to begin with as I am standing around a bunch of people with guns, loaded ones. That being said, I have really never been in a gun shop where people greet you like a Macy's shopper blowing sunshine up your ass. I can only imagine what these guys feel like behind the counter with a bunch of patrons packing pistols and never knowing if someone is gonna go postal. I am not making excuses for rude behavior if the couple guys above have experienced it. My experience has been fairly positive, I have even had a couple of the guys smile at me, how about that. I have had to wait to get someones attention or help but on the weekends the place is pretty busy and that is when I usually go like most people that work for a living. When I ask their opinion I get it and I believe what they say as I am pretty educated on things I spend hundreds of dollars on. They have worked on used guns I have bought and I think their prices are pretty consistent with the competition for service and sales of new guns. I took my kid in there one day to shoot pistols and they told me he couldnt as he was too young, I can not remember what age he had to be but he was 14 I think at the time. My son was pretty disappointed and I did not have any rifles or shotguns with me (I think he could have shot long guns, not sure call before you go) so he did not get to shoot, I just bought what I went there for and left. I am glad there is a smoking ban in Michigan as they used to smoke in here, as well as every other shop I have been in, both public and private. Over all I like the place, the staff acts like any other place or better that I have been to and I found them fairly helpful. I am not some tough looking guy or hunter, I have a back ground in financial sales and pretty conservative look. I do not feel like I am discriminated against because of my appearance and I am not aggressive or pushy when I address them. Wherever I go I try to "mirror" the folks I am dealing with, comes from my sales background. So I am not smiling and perky when I go into a place where people are generally expression-less and un animated. Remember, when you walk into a gun shop you are not walking into Disney World, you wont be greeted by a big, happy mouse that looks like he wants to hump your leg. read more

I was there yesterday (2/15/12). As it has been some time since my last visit (about a year) I was looking forward to sighting in a new .22 rifle/scope combo. I was pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was around the lunch hour. I asked a patron if the range was busy and she indicated the rifle range only had 1 other shooter. Walking in it looked to be well stocked and enough employees to help all the customers. Owning and operating a firearms range and shop has to have more challenges than say owning a pizza parlor. The pistol range was full. I walked up to the sales counter and the gentleman asked if I was there to shoot. What caliber and how long did I want on the range. Very polite. I did get sticker shock at the cost for range time but it is their toy and if I want to play that is the cost. Actually, the slightly higher cost probably does a couple of things. Keeps the riff-raff shooters to a minimum and produces less wear and tear on the equipment. So from the range owners perspective, they probably have not seen a significant decrease in range revenues while they have seen less wear and tear on expensive range equipment. After about 45 minutes I could "taste" the foul air. While DA does have a better than average ventilation system i could tell there was room for improvement. I did experience a small malfunction on the Remington 587. The bolt lever pulled out. Kinda odd, but not being familiar with the action I asked for help from the gunsmith. It took him a minute to figure it out, reinserted it without too much trouble and sent me on my way...that was very cool. For all of you that felt your experience was less than stellar customer service people are only human. We all want a good customer experience. If I was the range owner I would take not of all the feedback. Afterall you get the customer in the door once, getting them back...well, thats the secret. read more

My fiance and I tried this place out for the first time with a friend of ours. There was a deal on Groupon for two people so we purchased two of them. They paid for two lanes for one hour each. We also purchased extra ammo to fulfill that hour. When we were called up we were only given one lane. When we asked for our second lane we were told we would have to share one. Then a half hour later, we were rudely told that our time is up. When I tried explaining to him that we had paid for an hour he replied with "No you didn't. You paid for a half hour." and pushed me aside and grabbed our equipment, completely ignoring me as I'm trying to talk to him. So we went out to talk to the person that checked us in and he explained that they don't have their other range open today so they are only doing half hour sessions. So how is this my problem and why weren't we told this at check-in? Their solution was to give me a coupon for a half hour lane rental. Okay that makes up for the half hour on one lane, but what about the other hour on the second lane we weren't given? This place is very poorly run with extremely rude and unprofessional staff. I will never be back. Close Quarters in Utica is definitely worth the further drive. read more
