First time coming here me and my wife recently came here to look at yarn products for a few sewing projects we had at home. It's great to see that this place has classes here and has built a great community of sellers as a way to disconnect yourself from the stress around the world. The staff here was friendly and I enjoyed a little Artisan Market full of knitted Goods featured here as well. Prices here are a little high but I love what the store offers and the story it tells. Call me petty, but when I walk in the shop wearing a handknit sweater, and select yarn that I am just waiting for the desk help to ring up (who had disappeared after they made a Starbucks run) while you offer extended help to some patrons, as a shopkeeper I would not suggest that the I as a patron should go around the corner to Dunkin Donuts to use the restroom. I was waiting for you or your staff, and had a pile of yarn on the counter. When you're in a business that largely caters to women of a certain age, I'd suggest get your facilities in working order or change your policy on letting people use it. Denying customers the use of a restroom when needed is both offensive and ableist. So sadly, an online yarn store got my $$ for the lovely hat project that I saw in your store. It's too bad- I was really looking forward to getting a t-shirt. read more

My favorite LYS. Super friendly and knowledgeable, no matter who's behind the counter. Beautiful selection of natural, socially conscious fibers. It's not cheap, but the prices are fair (and sometimes, there are sale items). And they stock a full range of sizes of Chiagoo Red Lace circular needles! :D Notions selection is also good. There's not a huge selection, but the ribbons and buttons from local artisans are beautiful and will surely add that special touch to your next project. read more

Drove 20 min out of my way to visit and was not disappointed. They carry Shibui yarn and even wound it for me. Definitely a great vibe, neither snobby or pretentious, just a honest to goodness yarn shop. I just finished a fingerless mitten class and it was phenomenal! Liz was patient and funny and full of helpful hints. I normally cast on by " knitting" on.. she showed me how to cast on by thumb and today I did it on my own for the first time !!!!! I will be taking another class there! A good place to spend a pay check on yarn and then have to actually make it into something tangible. A fab place with a even more fab yarn selection. Its a mini place that jams a whole lot in. They have some of the brightest natural yarns I can find. The colors are super vibrant and unique. They have an area where people can come on in and just knit or crochet together and get a little help from the owner if she has time Classes are available for beginners and experts. The best part is that when you take your yarn to pay the lady will ask if you want it wound into a ball ,of course I always say yes even though it doesnt matter I just like to watch her do it.They have a nifty lil hand cranked machine thats winds it right up into a perfect ball.Luvs it! read more

A friend recommend that I check out String Theory when I told her I had a business trip to Glen Ellyn. I'm glad I did. The staff was helpful and courteous. They suggested several appropriate yarns when I told them the project I had in mind. They had a nice selection of both yarn and accessories. There was some sort of class or knitting group meeting while I was browsing. They sounded like a nice bunch of women who enjoyed their time together. I didn't try to join in their conversation, but I did have the impression that I would have been welcome. I'll certainly return if future business takes me back to the area! read more

They have late hours on Thursdays so I had to stop in while we were in the Chicago area. The staff was warm and welcoming and even stayed late for me to look. They were very knowledgeable about their yarn and they have a nice selection. The woman working told me the owner stresses buying good yarn that's good for someone - organic, fair trade, etc. They even have a table where you can bring in your yarn and work on it while you chat. This would be my LYS if I were local to Chicago. read more

I love this place! As good a selection as Mom's old cedar chest full 'o'yarn! The needles are really sharp too, great for getting the kids out of the door before school without drawing blood. Lastly, I don't have to sheer my own sheep anymore and my hands aren't dyed those same boring old colors anymore! Would highly recommend to others! read more

I am a knitting teacher in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. I have a few great groups of students, and I have been teaching knitting classes for several years. As knitting is a very social activity, and I am always looking to hear students' experiences, I occasionally hear about a particular knitting shop. Of course, those reviews are almost always mixed, with students who had a better experience than others. I always encourage students to judge for themselves in every case but one. This store. One of my favorite students brought in a pattern for me to help her with, a baby hat. She bought the pattern and supplies from string Theory about five years ago, to make a hat for her daughter's baby. About 24 weeks into the pregnancy, the amniotic sac ruptured a few days before the class that she scheduled with your store. The day before the class, her grandbaby tragically died. The student was understandably upset, and not prepared to sit in a class making a baby hat for this deceased grandchild, and she had plenty of work to do with her family. She contacted the store and politely asked if she could participate in the following session for the same class, and explained why she could not attend. She was not asking for money back, or for unreasonable accommodations, she simply could not attend the class when it was scheduled. Instead of working with her, the store owner blamed her inability to advocate for a student in need on the teacher of the class. Not asking her own contracted employee to give this grieving woman a reasonable break, she flatly refused to help her. I find that decision inhumane and appalling, as have all of my other students. None of us have been able to offer a reasonable explanation of their actions apart from apathetic greed. They couldn't tell her that she would ask the instructor if she would make an exception in this instance? No accommodation from such a successful store was possible? It's shameful to know that their service is so callous that they wouldn't help a kind woman with a simple compromise that would not injure them in any way. Doing the right thing costs so little. Five years have passed, and this wonderful student is now in my class, and I am grateful for it. She is a gentle, generous woman with a real heart of gold, and their inexcusable attitude has brought her into my class. Her story was shared in her class, so now all of those students know about it. I was so offended by it, that I have shared it with all of my other students in other classes who were equally outraged. This is how reputations are built, and even though we have many stores available to us between here and there, I intend to continue to use this store as an example of how bad customer service is to be avoided. I've only been to String Theory a couple of times, but after my most recent visit I plan to add them to my regular list of places to increase my yarn hoard. I arrived yesterday deeply frustrated. I had about 3 rows remaining on a project and had made a mistake I had no idea how to fix. One of their super helpful knitting wizards got me out of hot water and back on track. They don't seem to offer as many classes as other shops, but there is a "make your own class" and "get help" options that are very reasonably priced. I looked a bit at their yarn, they don't have a lot of the flashy novelty-type yarns, but do have a good selection including a section of organic yarns. Recommended. read more

I'm in the middle of knitting a blanket, and to save some money I've been buying the yarn in bulk online. I went in today and the sales woman very curtly told me they do not spool yarn that isn't bought there. I even offered to pay to have my yarn spooled and she told me I could do it myself. Pretty obnoxious. Not the way I expect to be treated at a local, neighborhood boutique. read more
