The location is very convenient for Fortville and Ingalls citizens. The staff always seems to be friendly, place could use a deep cleaning, smaller basic meat selection, and expect to pay more for the convenience factor. This is not a place to do your regular grocery shopping but a place to grab a few items you may need for dinner. They recently started selling alcohol as well. read more

Always my go-to when ordering a picnic ham. It's nice to have a grocery that will order things for you.

So the prices are a little high given the fact it's in Fortville and it's within walking distance of my home makes the price difference acceptable. read more

Bought lunch there, the young man serving food, wear gloves, just plain up disgusting! Don't eat there hot food! With all these bacterias flying around, I'm sure not wearing gloves is a violation of the health departments regulations! Tighten up. read more

There aren't a lot of reasons why to stop here. This place has seen better days. It is not stocked very well and not that clean. I don't smoke (and I don't recommend you should either), but they do have cheap cigs if you have to smoke. They also have pop/soda/coke along the side. I do really like that they take donations for the Special Olympics and Goodwill. The Strough's doesn't light up anymore, so the sign just says "Meat" now. The gentleman checking people out didn't acknowledge me when I put my stuff down. He then checked me out proceeding to talk on the phone through his ear phones. He didn't hand me back my change just threw it on the belt and then left the cashier spot and walked back behind the other counter to continue talking on the phone. He didn't say goodbye, thank you or even hand me my bag. I was a store manager of a grocery store for several years and have never witnessed an employee being this Blatantly rude. read more

The prices are too high. And I have gotten meat from the counter and cooked it either that night, or the next day and it's been bad. When I would check out more than half of the time they are talking on the phone. That's bad service. I only go In if I'm in a pickle and need something. But, I won't buy meat there. read more

They're your local town grocery. Higher prices than major stores and you have to keep an eye on expiration dates on slower-moving items, but milk and eggs are always fine. But hands down the meat here is amazing. Freshly cut directly from primals, it's very well priced and tastes great on the grill. read more

Strough's is an exceptionally convenient location to collect your foodstuffs. IGA to me is unique in that it's a staple of smalltown USA across the land and can still be found in many places where big box has not taken over. Overall it's nothing to write home about; the inside is dingy (but not dirty), ceilings are low, floors look like they have been there for 30 years or more. I have never (ever) been impressed with the produce here (should I?) and I have shopped at better IGA's. The meat selection and deli is pretty decent and competitive price wise. The other review that is not recommended is correct on one major point. For a very long stretch, serious construction work was being done directly in front of the store. (It still amazes me how little appreciation town and state planners have for the negative impact of road construction and not considering the lost revenue and tax generators. They should be doing absolutely everything in their power to mitigate impact and it simply was not easily accessible from IN13.) I don't have the full back story on whether the "man" was holding them down as the other author implicitly claimed but it didn't take an advanced degree to realize decreased traffic on IN13 was an enormous fiscal hit. In fact...I didn't come here for at least two years while all that nonsense was going on and assumed they had closed since there were rumors to that end. But the owners roughed it out and stayed in business...big kudos for that alone. Eventually I suspect the market giants of the Marsh and Kroger variety will force the IGA in little Fortville to succumb. But for now...they continue to keep on trucking. I have not (and won't) do all my shopping here but it is exceptionally convenient to have close by in case I only need a few things or a restock on pantry items. In any case, I have a lot of respect for the owners and their perseverance and will continue to patronize as long as they are in the game. read more

Went up there to make a purchase at Strough's and then meet someone for a Craigslist deal. I did nothing illegal yet he kicked me and my friend off his property so I had to do the Craigslist trade on public property on the sidewalk across the street. We were at Strough's for 3 mins tops and the manager came out and started arguing. I will never buy from stroughs again but if I have to meet someone for Craigslist I WILL be meeting them on the side walk across the street which is public property. Manager was rude and disrespectful. I'll never shop there again. read more

I don't recommend this grocer. I was in last night close to closing, and as I was walking by the meat counter, a worker was covering the meat with USED wax paper. You could clearly see the the paper had scum and stains on it from being used to cover meat previously! I was so disgusted I quickly left the store. I'm not familiar with the laws, but I can't imagine that is legal. I have spent years shopping in this grocery store off and on, and while it is no Walmart, it has always been kept rather clean. I'm very discouraged by the high prices and low volume of fresh looking foods. Everything seems like it's been sitting in the same spot for far too long. I won't be coming back again. Fortville desperately needs a small grocer, but this place is no longer the answer!! read more

Strough's supermarket is the best. Even though they were nearly put out of business by greedy government officials and big business and it hurt them personally, they held on for the people of the community. When others would have given up and thrown in the towel; it shows the stuff the Strough family are made of. We have shopped there for over 40 years and our family for many before that. Hopefully the town that they have always cared for will come back to the fold and start shopping there again. They carry all the needed items we all need to survive, just not the fancy expensive ones we don't. In this economy it would serve us all to think about that when we plan our shopping.
