Stopped by after dinner to the Birdcage Lounge for drinks when they were showing RuPaul's drag race on the multiple screens. We ended up staying there when the DJ started his set. Shout out to bartender Dee for making us some shots and cocktails that we enjoyed. (Tonight, the bar was stocked low on some of the liquor to make the specialty cocktails I wanted to try; however, she mixed other drinks that were still refreshing.) The music was great and the decor/atmosphere was fun. There aren't very many gay bars left in Orange County with a dance floor, so it's nice to support places such as this. Note that the bathroom in the corner of the Birdcage Lounge is nicer than the one by the dance area. Overall, a fun Friday night! read more

Fun bar to come check out to see one of their Drag shows. We decided to come check this place out for a friends birthday. She had never been to a drag show and we have never been to this location so we figured we would come check it out. We got a reservation for 3 people and ended up sitting at the bar on the side of the stage. It was perfect for ordering drinks and getting a good view. And yes the drinks are made strong but still have good flavor. As for the show it was very fun and entertaining. They walk around and perform and make everyone feel involved even if you are in the back. After the show they have music playing and you can stick around and party the night away. We stayed to get some pictures in the photo booth and dance for a few songs. Overall it was a fun night and we would come here again for another show. read more

My friends brought me here for the Mariah Carey and friends drag queen extravaganza. We celebrated my 50th birthday and had the best time ever. The service was great. Our server actually held our cake and brought it out and served a slices at the end of the show. The show was so much fun and really well produced. The drinks were strong and on point. The venue is small with low ceilings making the environment sweaty and humid. They demanded a $10 cover for a DJ playing the same song/type-beats with no change or variation. The part that upset me the most is when staff wouldn't let me go take my anti-seizure medication without having to pay the $10 to get back in. This happened within the first 10 minutes arriving. Keep in mind this is a tiny Strip Mall location my car was directly in front of the "clubs" sidewalk. I've been to huge venues where even they were cool about leaving if you let security search you again on re-entry. Basically I was told to have a seizure on the dance floor or get out and repay to walk 2feet back in the door. The Abbey in West Hollywood is now completely worth the drive from Newport Beach if this is what coastal OC has to offer. *An update, just spoke with Manager outside and the security to confirm that it is the case and it wasn't just one person who told me a wrong answer about me getting my epileptic medication, even though they can literally watch me. It's sad and it makes me sick that the LGBT community is turning more and more hostile within itself (especially here)... read more

Great energy and authenticity in this space. I've been a handful of times and every time I have a fun and memorable time. I went for bingo during the week one of the times and it was such a fun night for midweek. The energy was positive, welcoming, and honestly just fun. Parking is convenient if you get there earlier in the evening, so plan ahead if you can. I recently went with friends to see the Hocus Pocus drag show. The drag queens were amazing as well as the dancers, and they were really sweet. My problem is the two drink minimum per person for tables, or, as I understood it, $200 minimum per table when it comes to your tab. That just seemed a little outrageous. Not sure why they do that. Came here over the weekend for drinks and a good time, and they did not disappoint! Everyone from the host, server, bartender, to the Queens was AMAZING. Our server, Ryan, couldn't have been any sweeter or more attentive. Our drinks never ran low and he even chatted with us after before we left. The queens were incredible and we were screaming and dancing the whole night! I highly recommend bringing $1 bills to tip them (or you can get them from the bar). Bathrooms and club was clean, and seats were comfy if you get a booth. My one comment is that our drinks were a bit sweet to start, but once we switched up our orders they were strong and on point. I've been here now a handful of times Precovid and post, and I feel like overall my experiences have been good here. I haven't dealt with any rude bouncer or had any issues getting drinks, etc. Everyone I've encountered has been friendly and the way this place is set up is interesting. It feels clean and on the newer end, and the lights and ambiance are nice in my opinion. They also have a lot of cool areas to take photos with neon lighting, etc. Although I don't particularly like coming here for the music (I'm more of a hip hop and reggaeton fan myself), I'd come back because if it's location and easiness of getting to. As a former Long Beach resident, sometimes making a trek to WeHo is not worth it, lol. Check your receipts people. I was here Friday night with some friends for a birthday celebration. I was the designated driver that night and only had one drink when we arrived. I did buy drink for my friends and knew exactly who got what and how much everything cost. I always save receipts for this purpose. The next day I notice on my bank statement an additional $10 was charged on my card from strut. I asked friends and even looked up all my receipts and nothing was showing up as $10 total only. This is, or must be an additional tip charge that they gave them self's. I always tip with cash after purchase and only so they can keep it all for their service. But this makes no sense. It's okay. The emphasis is on drag (which I know nothing about nor care to learn however support because everyone should be free to express themselves and lather on makeup if they choose to do so). There was no music the night me and my friend went, but several TVs playing reality tv - drag shows... again, I just don't care about drag and usually get annoyed when I'm forced to watch a drag show and temporarily pause dancing to watch people lip sync... I dunno, just not exciting for me. anyway, very sparkly inside with femininity dominating the vibe (totally support it - this is my observation). drinks seemed overpriced, no music, a few locals (most likely regulars) sitting around the bar..... that's it. .... We walked in, grabbed a menu, sat down, felt a little awkward and uninspired, then left. I think this place is wonderful for a niche group of lgbtq who are die hard drag fans and desire flamboyance and over the top pink fuzzy sparkly decor, but I felt a little out of my own there. and before the business owner responds - I'm not an Orange County Republican gay! I attended the Hocus Pocus Beetlejuice Drag Show and absolutely loved the decor and ambiance... from outside to walking in to where we were seated. The whole club was a spooky vibe. The waiters were super nice, albeit maybe a little understaffed that night, but they did their best and with smiles on their faces. The drinks were OK, it was a 2 drink minimum on top of the ticket to get in, and the drinks were pretty weak, but not cheap. Other than that, the energy that the queens and dancers gave was electric!! The whole show was high energy and they moved around the room and made sure the entire audience was engaged and involved. We loved it. After the show, the drag queens came out to take pics with whoever wanted to and they opened up the dance floor for the normal club night. Costa Mesa, We have a new club in town and it's called STRUT! The vibe is Las Vegas meets WeHo with a mix of Essex. I went opening weekend and immediately knew this place was gonna be special. There's something for everyone! Peacock-plumed cocktail servers, roller-skating gogo dancers, boy-next-door bartenders and downtown DJs. On weekends you'll wait on a crazy-long line! I mean like CRAZY long. After that you enter through a fabulously neon-covered hallway a - perfect for the LYBL selfie. The hallway leads to a great view of the main room which has private tables, and benches. You can walk a few steps down to the dancefloor or continue across the room to the main bar. The bar has a great mix of newly released signature cocktails - including my current favorite, the OHHHH HENNY! It's a tiki drink made with JD Honey, pineapple and more. It's oh so sweet and oh so good! Another popular favorite appears to be the one called DADDY ISSUES. Figures! (wink) **Side note: YELP! When are you gonna start supporting emojis!?!?!** ok, The DJs they've had so far have been unreal! Including DJ Josh Peace. His spins get everyone hot and wet on the dance floor. If you feel like you're overheating, you can retire to the lounge at the back of the building. It has its own bar with stylish decor that carries throughout - hot-pink high-backed chairs, oil paintings with gilded frames and roomy booths perfect for groups or a special tete-a-tete with tonight's insta-date. The barstools here are a little uncomfortable as you can only rest your foot on one side, but after one of their cocktails you'll forget all about that. Unlike WeHo, the bartenders here are so nice they make it feel like home. Big shout out to Sarah Dee for assembling an amazing squad! This is my new favorite spot and a great addition to downtown CM. Vibe is there but music is just ok. It's like the DJ pick the perfect song, then adds the most random background music and never fully the true song. I wouldn't recommend to come on a Saturday. The venue is WAY too small to hold enough people to be deemed a proper dance floor. I was just there and the club was so packed it couldn't be safe. There was legit no room to move, dance or even go pee cuz the bathroom lines are so long, and easily able to just open the door even if the door is locked! The only good thing is the bartenders. They are sweet hearts who deal with a lot of people at once. 3 stars solely for them read more

Strut is one of the best inclusive bars in all of Orange County. I took my straight friends to celebrate New Years and I'm glad I did because they really enjoyed it. They were not sure what to expect but strut surely does pass the vibe check for all. They have amazing staff, our server Sean went above and beyond for us all night long. Sean's service is unmatched and he is very welcoming and easy to talk to. We were also very surprised on how fast we were getting out drinks when we ordered with our server Sean vs having to order directly from the bar. Big shout out to the security staff as well, as they were very nice and you actually feel safe and protected unlike other places I've been too. Thanks for allowing us to make some new memories and being inclusive so that everyone is having a great time. I appreciate your hard working staff, especially in these crazy times. Had a chance to visit Strut for the first time last Friday (during COVID). They are currently operating lounge style (no dance floor), but that doesn't mean it's not fun! Still had a great night with my friends. Their happy hour ends at 9 p.m. and they have awesome drink specials/bar bites. They have tables indoors and outdoors (with heaters). Their tables were all socially distanced and their staff were all wearing masks. Their interior decor is cute and classy! It's a Friday night at 11:30 pm the dance floor is empty because the DJ they hire absolutely sucks. I am no professional DJ but I do partake in many social club outings. I would have no problem paying $100 for drinks if the music was good. I understand that my comment about the music being terrible is "subjective" but ... the reality is... If the dance floor is almost empty it's because your DJ sucks. Asked the DJ for a request to play "Bad Bunny" and his response " who is that?" . No further comments... On top of that a cover fee after 11p. Next time I'll ask to preview the DJ before paying a cover to enter a bar / club that plays boring music. Another adventure at Strut! Friday night at Strut was great! The line to get in moved swiftly. The bartenders were quick and friendly. The music was awesome. Unfortunately, some guests were not too friendly. I was escorted out after being pushed into the bar aggressively and exchanging words with someone. Security kindly led me out and I asked to speak to a manager (Karen moment). I explained what happened and this man was kind and understanding and escorted me back in. I've visit Strut on three different occasions total. Twice in early 2020 before the pandemic. On my most recent visit this past week, my friend and I felt pretty out of place as gay men in our 20's/30's. The crowd on the dancefloor was really young (looked under 21), rude, and a bit pretentious. There were a lot of straight couples making out, and all around I saw a lot of straight couples in general. No difference in going to any other other club. Will be sticking to other gay clubs in the future. The bartenders were friendly; overall, the staff was nice and professional. read more

Went with friends to an event and I do not recommend anyone ever go to this bar under any circumstances. I know my friends and I will never go again. The security guard was incredibly rude and outright homophobic. He told my feminine gay friend "no sissies allowed" and laughed at his own joke. What? This is a gay bar. The event started at 7pm and he didn't come out until 7:15. We asked him if the bar was open and his response was "I don't know. Why don't you tell me?" I mean, what? Is this guy for reals? Everything he said was tinged with attitude. It was so obvious he didn't want to be there. It gets worse. While we were out in the patio, we witnessed him making very homophobic jokes about certain drag queens that were performing at the bar that night! He was talking to another man that was standing outside. I mean, this is just ridiculous. I talked to my friends about my experience and, unsurprisingly, most of them have similar experiences with this particular security guard. I know this bar lost my business for good and the business of a dozen or so of other friends. Also drag queens beware, the security guard does not think highly of you and is not afraid to make remarks about how you look or dress. How are we suppose to feel comfortable in LGBT spaces when they hire outright homophobic security guards that aren't afraid to make fun of the patrons that give the bar money and the drag queens that perform there? read more
