Rachel Hodge, though a new addition to the Stuart Laurence Salon, has been my hair dresser since our early years of high school. Over the years I've had the pleasure of watching her go through schooling, jobs, and clients to help her abilities in cosmetology blossom. Her passion for her work is uncanny and, to the ones closest to her, we thrive on watching her dreams come true. I've never experienced another hair dresser like Rachel after years of sitting in a salon and watching others deal with their clients. Rachel is a friend, not only to her well-known companions, but to every client that sits in her chair. She knows how to converse, to make them smile, laugh, and enjoy their stay at the salon. She has a remarkable way of listening to a clients' wishes and then providing the best options along with her own opinion. In other words, it's as if she has her own positive atmosphere. Watching Rachel go from a small salon in Greenwood to this larger and much more high-class salon, I've noticed her drive to work dramatically increase. Her work ethic is something to idolize and with all of her new clients, I see nothing but happiness in her every time we speak. She loves her work just as she loves her clients. I, myself, have ventured the three hour drive a couple of times and each time have left satisfied. My experience with Rachel and the rest of the stylists is always a good one and I have failed to ever see another customer unsatisfied with their stay at the Stuart Laurence Salon. I am new to Charleston and had to find a new stylist after my relocation. I was SUPER apprehensive about purchasing the Groupon and trying out Stuart Laurence after reading some of the reviews, but the deal was too good to pass up and I work nearby so I figured I'd give it a shot. Jackie was my stylist and was EXCELLENT! She was attentive, we went over everything at the beginning of my appointment and she was very friendly. I had a cut and full highlight with two shades of blonde to maintain some natural look to the color and it turned out perfectly. I had also put off getting my hair done for longer than usual so my regular cut/style was definitely grown out. I showed her an old photo and she did a fabulous job with the cut. I noticed that several people were annoyed about how much hair they lost on a cut, but I feel like that happens with any stylist, even my old stylist who took care of me from 4th grade to now 28 yrs old. Jackie made sure to check with me multiple times on length before she took the scissors to my hair. She even checked with me before putting me under a dryer to see if she could feed my meter. I also was greeted by a friendly front desk person and met the owner whom I found to be very friendly and funny. The other staff seemed welcoming, social and smiley. I believe if you go in with an open mind you will not be disappointed. While it is expensive, if you can afford the regular price it is well worth it. Glad I found a new hair home! read more

I have been a client of this salon since it opened it's doors. Was there when Mayor Joe was doing the "Ribbon Cutting Ceremony". I have never had one bad experience in the salon in any way shape or form. Butch, used to keep my color looking so natural and real even my mother could not tell!!! When at the age of 50 I decided to stop chasing the white roots away, he and I decided on the correct haircut to keep it from being too much of a shock for everyone...LOL I am not saying there have not been times when more hair was trimmed than I asked for, however, my hair looked healthier and shinier when I left!!! :)* One thing I do know, Charleston ain't Chicago, and do not expect to find it there either....as for snobbery in that salon, SHUT THE DOOR!!!! Southern Graciousness is the theme of the day at Stuart Laurence....Yahnkees do have some troubles understanding We here in the South really are just being nice, we were reared up that way, probably now it genetic, I know it is with Butch, Michael, Melissa, Katherine, and the rest of the staff. My hat is off to Butch and Michael, both, they keep a clean shop, always have some coffee ready for me, give me as hard a time as I give them...I have seen stylists come and go for many reasons, most leave because they do not fit in, one was murdered, the team has always treated each other as family and I believe they do the same to their clients. read more

I am a new customer of Stuart Laurence Salon so I was very nervous going in the first time for a cut and color. I was a previous long time customer of Stella Nova and got tired of paying the high prices for just a hair cut. I made the mistake of trying to color my hair at home and the color turned out aweful (red on natural red should be easy right??). I unfortunately had family pictures the next day so I needed a fix quickly. I called Stuart Laurence because I had gotten a free style card for them from making a Bumble and Bumble purchase through Sephora. I got an appointment with Ashely C. I took her a picture of what color I wanted my hair and a picture of they style I wanted for my family pictures. She was so friendly, professional and understanding that I had no doubt she would do a great job. She took her time and even consulted other styists to make sure the color was exactly the one I picked out. It took her a few extra steps to get exactly what I wanted but she didn't mind and did a wonderful job. Along with that gave me an updo that looked amazing. I had so many compliments on my hair style and color as soon as I walked out of the salon just walking down King Street. Excellent salon! The atmosphere alone is enough to bring you back and the fact that stylist Afsaneh has worked wonders with my unpredictible hair when no one else could is the ice cream on top! I admit that I am a difficult case getting color, highlights, cut and style --and hard to please-- but if you could see my hair before I started going here and now--you'd agree she has a gift and this is the salon to go to! Everyone who sees my hair asks where I go and several of my friends have gone to her. In addition to her expertise with hair, Afsaneh is a wonder (& one of the very few licensed) with thread when it comes to removing unwanted hair. I have tried many, many salons and this one has it all! I've sat in my cosy chair getting the most detailed attention from Afsaneh and the salon crew and always leave feeling pampered and special. I see other clients (women and men) come in and leave with a brand new look or a healthy revived look and a big smile on their faces. Fashion shows are on the TVs during your pampering and you can get some great outfit ideas too! This is a fabulous salon with an unbelievable stylist, butch. I have extremely problematic hair, and his ability to cut and color my hair makes a huge difference. I have been to many of the area's "top salon's" with very little luck. On a recommendation from a gal with fabulous hair, I tried Butch. At this salon there are more budget friendly stylists, who are rather new, as well as more seasoned stylists. Butch, the lead stylist, is a co-owner and has been in the business for many years, and although his price is extremely high, he's well worth every penny. I can go up to 3 months without a visit, and my hair still looks great and still receives compliments. One note: he's very sensitve to what YOU want, and you need to ask him for suggestions for him to offer new ideas. Also, i love his neck and head massages during the shampoo process. Often they last for several minutes, and it's unbelievable! Other high end stylists may not wash your hair, allowing new stylists to take care of this. Butch takes you through the whole process, consultation/shampoo/cut/color/styling tips/blowdry and even will touch up your hair when dry to make sure it's perfect. Save up and try him, if your hair is as needy as mine-- Bet you'll have no regrets. read more

First off, I have been a client of Katherine @ Stuart Laurence for 3 years. 3 times I have strayed looking for a cheaper stylist but all I can say is that Katherine is truly the best in Charleston and worht every penny! I had gone to another salon just a few blocks down from Stuart Laurence on King St and had ombre color done back in April. It looked good @ first but by week 8 was looking pretty awful.. I finally made it in to see Katherine around week 11 with a picture from a magazine thinking it would take several sessions to get my blonde hair back. She looked at the pic, asked me what I liked about the cut and color and went to work. It looks amazing! Even 2 weeks after, I'm still amazed @ what a fantastic job she did with what she had to work with. I have gotten so many compliments. About the prices, if you want a truly divine color service/cut you have to be willing to drop @ least $150. These stylists spend alot of time doing outside education to keep their cutting/coloring skills up and they deserve to be compensated accordingly. If you want to spend no more than $60 for a color service/cut, don't complain when your hair looks like crap. You get what you pay for. read more

I've been a regular for Rachel Hodge for a few years. She has an undying passion for styling hair. She always listens to what you have to say; suggestions, personal preferences, or just to chat about life, Rachel doesn't just give you a haircut; she gives you an experience that makes you smile the whole way through. I've come back numerous time after getting a haircut with my family oohing and aweing at how well it looks. I have very course and thick hair, so it's a mess to deal with and Rachel handles it with no problem. My entire family has gone to her for styling because of her work with me and their family's families have even visited her now because of it. Not to mention all of my friends rely on her prowess to make us look stunning. She's a versatile stylist that can work with anything you give her, and she smiles as she does it. She came from a small salon in Greenwood and took her abilities to the next level working at Stuart Laurence Salon. It's going to be a 3 hour drive for my family and me to have the pleasure of Rachel styling our hair, but it's well worth it. She's the best! Stuart Laurence isn't like your basic salon nor like your crazy expensive salon. I thought it was reasonably priced considering I walked out looking amazing! I also never get my hair cut because I'm scared to trust people with my extremely curly hair but Amanda knew exactly what she was doing. She explained how she was going to cut my hair and even told me ways I could style it in the morning. The treatment for curls is definitely worth it! My curls are still pillow soft and even look a little tighter because they are so healthy now. She cut my hair exactly how I asked (long layers) and even styled it for me afterwards. I felt so good and happy when I walked out that I may have or may have not walked up and down king street just so I could feel my curls bounce :) If you are scared of trying new hair salons or just scared of salons period, go here! They make you feel like a special regular even if your new. I moved to Charleston almost 3 years ago and after trying a few different stylists to find one I liked, I went to Stuart Laurence to see Megan Atkinson on a recommendation from a friend. The atmosphere at Stuart Laurence is perfect and the staff were all polite, friendly, and professional, but what really made the experience great and what has kept me coming back is Megan. I have terrible anxiety when it comes to getting my hair cut haha, but Megan put me at ease. She has incredible vision but she is also very careful to take into consideration what I want - being able to balance the two to find a cut that is flattering, manageable, and won't make me hyperventilate is the mark of an incredible stylist! All kidding aside, Megan is an amazing stylist (and a wonderful person!) with a remarkable knowledge of the cuts and products that best benefit my hair and my lifestyle. I would recommend her to anyone and have never heard anything but glowing reviews about her work. I can't even imagine letting anyone else cut my hair! read more

These guys are awesome. I started going to Butch in 2005 and have NEVER been disappointed. As soon as you walk in the salon you feel the energy. Brian is always engaging and accommodating (he will even get you some bottled water or a soda served over ice). Butch and staff are well trained in the latest styling and color techniques. Having a master colorist work on my hair means I have confidence in the results. I have long dark red hair and my highlights are always very natural looking and to the degree I want (from subtle to lived in the sun for year). The cut is always perfect for my type of hair, body style and lifestyle. The cuts and highlights always grow out beautifully and naturally. Butch is very entertaining and a master at his craft. I have difficult hair. The kind of hair that takes longer to cut, longer to color, and a stylist with many tricks to manage it. I've lived in California and traveled back to charleston to see butch because of the painful haircuts received. Luckily I live in charleston now and can get regular appointments with butch. There's no choice in my decision to see him. My hair is cut perfectly with him or its brutal with someone else. For those of you with hair that can handle mediocre cuts and color, carry on. For those like me who need a stylist with skill, time, and talent- this is your guy. I get a cut that looks effortless and color that keeps people guessing if it's mine. Worth every cent. read more

I went in with a living social coupon, a little worried that presenting a coupon at a salon would lead to a jipped experience. This salon, however, was the best I've ever been to and treated me just like any other customer! They gave me the best haircut I've ever had with beautiful highlights that were perfect for my haircolor. My stylist Pablo was extremely nice and everyone there made sure I had a comfortable experience by offering me multiple refreshments. After my cut, highlights, wash, and texturing, he blew out my hair and then gave me soft waves so that I could walk out of there ready to finish my day. At Stuart Laurence you're treated like royalty. They keep your parking meter filled up. And there's always a piece of chocolate greeting me every time. Melissa is awesome. She does a great ouidad cut and style for all you curly heads. Your curls will never be the same. Its a little cost prohibitive but otherwise Id be doing thing style/ treatment all the time. I love her color just as much.more. Shes very knowledgeable aobut the various methods of highlights/ downlights. She gets it right even if requires some extra time. I found Stuart Laurence through my daughter who transferred to charleston to attend musc. Her father and I fell in love with the city and purchased a second home in the downtown area. Then I fell in love with Stuart Laurence and our favorite girl there, Katherine Bailey. It is an absolute pleasure to visit this salon. Aisha knows curly hair and is so cool. I've been dying my hair myself black for a year and was ready to go back to a softer more natural me. I left the salon feeling so excited and happy about my brown highlights. She styled my hair straight but gave me a wonderful tutorial on taming my natural curls. I also got a great brow job while deep conditioning. Staff was very friendly too. Downside it is pricey if you don't have a special. I used a groupon. Also downtown parking can be an issue. Melissa at Stuart Laurence is an excellent stylist and master colorist! From my first visit Melissa presented herself with professionalism and confidence. After my first visit I realized she performed magic on my hair. I have difficult, unruly hair, but with Melissa's knowledge and helpful attitude I left feeling like I had a "pot of gold" on my head. I having been getting my hair cut by Megan Atkinson at Stuart Laurence for the last 3 years and would NOT go anywhere else! But that's mostly because of Megan. She is fabulous and always listens to me and I cherish her advice because she is a gifted stylist. I am very picky about my hair and truthfully would pay an obscene amount for a good cut, but the prices at Stuart Laurence are very reasonable and I would recommend Megan to everyone!
