Came to Stub & Herb's after a U of M football game and it was packed! Definitely the place to come after a game! Their drink prices are reasonable and they have a lot of yummy appetizer options! We go the house cut French fries with a side of their house made ranch, they were delicious! For $9 though, I feel like the portion size could've been bigger, this was enough for only 2 people. Also not pictured were the cheese curds, the breading on the curds was the perfect ratio to the cheese, one of the best cheese curds I've ever had, if you are torn between getting the fries and the curds, get the curds! read more

I love this space as it is a fun alternative to a dark and gloomy bar. TVs could be bigger in this space but we could still enjoy the game on the small screen. I was on campus this week for a lecture series and a few of the other attendees wanted to meet up and go for a nice quick dinner after class. We were told by a graduate student friend of ours that Stub & Herb's is where all of the grad students went so we decided to try it out for an authentic U of M experience. When we walked in, it was one of those semi-dimly lit bar/restaurant combos that you expect to see next to a college campus or in the suburbs. Our waitress was friendly and quickly showed us a table that could accommodate our large group. After looking at the menu, we quickly realized our only options were either burgers or sandwiches which was alright, who doesn't love those anyway. We caught the end of Happy Hour which runs until 7 so a few of us got some drinks for really cheap. For the meal, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with French fries on the side. Unfortunately, this was a poor choice as the lettuce was soggy, the chicken was super thin, dry, but yet somehow not crispy. And there was nowhere near enough sauce for the sandwich to balance out the dryness. On top of that, the fries were not seasoned enough and not crispy. It was a disappointing meal and despite being hungry, I didn't finish my meal. I wouldn't come back here to grab a bite, but I would come back down for a cheap drink with pals. Stopped in here for a beer and app before the Gooher Volleyball game. I appreciate and support of the local teams and offers of drink discounts. I had the Summit Oatmeal stout and it was cold and creamy. Yum. For a snack we chose two apps, chicken fingers and onion rings. Let's just say they were extremely well fried. Went before a MN basketball game and they were maybe 1/2 full. We were a group of 4 and it took over an hour for apps and another 30 for the meals. We missed the beginning of the game given the wait. I will say our server was great but the food was almost not edible. We had two wraps, a burger and a salad and no one finished their meal. Not very crowded when I was there, but every time server came by it was several minutes before she came back. Ordered a cheeseburger and fries. Fries were ok, but apparently you have to say exactly what you want ON a sandwich: I got a bun, slice of cheese and a hamburger patty...that's it...nothing else. Ah, the classic college bar with waaay above average food! I love me some Stub & Herb's. The drinks are great, the food is amazing, and the staff is so friendly. The place lends itself to small groups, parties, events, game nights, the list goes on and on. The bar and dining space is pretty cozy - booths and tables. There's a back room where you can host events/play machine games. There are also TVs all over to watch sports games or whatever else you may want to watch. Food wise, the cheeseburger is sooo good (drooling just thinking about it). I also really enjoy the Turkey Avocado BLT - it comes on this amazing ciabatta bread that I daydream about. I also really enjoy the Cranberry Walnut Salad when I'm feeling healthy ;) and of course you can never go wrong with the chicken fingers! Bathrooms are a bit of a tight squeeze, but nothing to complain about. Stub & Herb's is located right on campus so check it out when you get a chance! read more

Best peanut butter sriracha burger and fries. Fried pickles best I've had. Lift Bridge Farm Girls were enjoyable also. Keep 'em coming. Homemade chili was also good! There is seating at the bar, hi top tables, low tops, indoor, sunroom, and outdoor. Love the atmosphere and the food. And everything. Bartenders seemed friendly and attentive. We have been here several times while staying in the area. Our server Friday 5/25/2018 was very nice and attentive. Kudos to her, but I wish I could remember her name--since I asked her for it (blonde young gal, wore her hair up, had nice personality.) She was friendly and genuine. Stub and Herbs is a very good bar located on the University side of town serving college students within University of Minnesota and residents near by. It always gets very crowded, which is a good thing. The food is great, and the servers and bartenders are very nice. There are a lot of local beers on tap to choose from, both dark beers like Grain Belt Nordeast and light beers like Surly Todd the Axe Man IPA. The staff at the bar are very strict about checking IDs during busy times, which is also a good thing as it ensures that everyone, including students, is of legal drinking age. read more

This is your basic bar food, so go elsewhere if you're looking for something exotic or fancy. All of their burgers come on a pretzel bun. I went with the stub classic, with mushroom, bacon, and a 1000 island sauce. The burger was cooked to hell, and slightly grey. My bun was glistening, and my onions rings were dripping oil. Just what I hoped for. Solid beer selection here, and the drinks came fast. Our server was good, but super awkward. She should probably not make this a career. The restaurant itself had a dirty vibe. Worst run bar ever. We sat down at an empty bar and watched as the place slowly filled up. One gal running the show for the fist half hour, served the last person to enter the bar first. A second bartender arrived, and started at a corner of the bar where folks already had drinks and "made his way around" with no regard for who showed up first, or who had been waiting for a half hour. I love this spot. It's just different. I hate the term old school but it is just that. Basic no frills bar with a fairly different demo. It isn't frequented by just one "type." Ive been coming up here for about a week and a half every summer to do some work on campus (minus 2020) and the place is always just perfect. Good beer. Great burgers. I love it. read more

This is a nice location close to the university and stadium. I went here for Happy Hour with a small group and we grabbed a corner booth. I don't know if I would come here without the HH deal, but they had a good menu. I ordered a beer and tater tots and definitely paid a fair price. The waitress was also very attentive. It is in a prime location and the noise level is tolerable when there isn't a major event going down. They have pretty good deals on drinks and food during happy hour. The tap list has a nice mix of quality and familiarity. The food is a couple steps above your average pub (see: juicy, salty, hangover-fighting breakfast burger and the nearly-epic mountain of nachos). Finally I got here! I had heard about this place so many times, but always hit up Sallys instead. Before the gopher game we headed over there for some pre game cocktails. I ordered a bloody mary and the boyfriend ordered the $4 tall boys. The blood Mary was decent, noting over the top but definitely satisfying. The cost was $6 which was a little disappointing, but when everything else is so cheap, i can deal. We also ordered this breakfast dish that we saw others ordering. It was tater tots topped with scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage gravy. YUM! and it was only $8. We couldn't even finish it between the 2 of us and it complimented the am cocktails perfectly! The place was busy and the staff was delightful (which sometimes doesn't happen when it is packed). PSA: If you are at the bar on game day, and you have your cocktail, please step away from the bar so others can order. Do not sit there gabbing away to your girl friends while there are obviously several other people looking to get their liquor fix. read more

Previously I have written to express my pleasure with stub n herbs' lemons. Tonight befalls a tragedy, in which I have been told that beyond a 3 lemon cap, I will be charged for lemon wedges. It is a dark day for all when you sit in an establishment and order an 11 dollar burger, plus some for a smattering of mayo, and are unable to have more than 3 pathetic lemon wedges. Beyond that, the lemons I was given are nothing more than dry, mostly pulp wedges of inhospitable sadness. I revoke my previous glowing assessment, in favor of expressing my disdain for my current experience. Also, staff has been weirdly rude every time I come here, 4 times in the past. Like, real talk, staff needs to step up their game. I get it if it is busy and I get that serving a bunch a customers is super stressful. Half the time it's not busy and service is still spotty at best. Please don't ignore us for most of the time and then be rude when you happen to drop by. read more

While I was on vacation up North I decided to swing by this place for a couple drinks and some food. I ended up going back several times during my stay. This place is a little bit divey but don't let that fool you. The cheese curds were the bomb and my mushroom Swiss burger was phenomenal. The amount of specialized cocktails that they had was through the roof. My personal favorite was the princess of darkness which was an alcoholic root beer float. The serve was a bit slow but it's expected at a bar. The staff was super friendly every time I was in there and if I ever travel that far North again it will definitely be on my spots to hit. read more

I love going to this place for their burgers and beers. Great selection of beers. The place appeals to a lot of the college students on the U of M campus. What I love about their burgers is that instead of being on regular buns, they're made out of their homemade pretzel buns. Not a huge difference, but it spices up the burgers. It was the time before the Gopher Football Freshman signing party and two good friends of mine went here before hand to have a couple beers and some appetizers. This has been a ritual for about 7 years now. Same two awesome buddies, same time before the signing party. One of my few traditions. I may not make Mother's Day, but I am making it to Stub and Herb's on Gopher Signing Day! The ritual started here about 10 years ago when Glen Mason met with about 20 guys to go over the new recruits, now they do the celebration at the practice facility with Moe's roast beef sandwiches and all the beer you want for 10 bucks. It is amazing. The new management has an amazing selection of beers. Lots of Surly (Furious, the best beer in the cities lately) and tons on IPAs I have not heard of before. it was beer heaven. We also ordered a nachos with beef, the cheese was like the cheese you would get at a Gopher football game, but it was a little above average. We then ordered the tater tots. Yummy! Nothing special, but they were a great accomplice to the hoppy beers we were ordering. We tried getting Wi-Fi, but ended up getting it from a near by Brueggers Bagels. Overall, the service was fantastic and quick. $3.50 for pints of Furious makes this reviewer happy and you could hear each other talk, which goes a long way. Our favorite place before our ritual before Gopher Football Signing hour and a half of scoping out the new football recruits. With the new stadium a block away, I am sure Stub and Herb's will be here for a long time until they build on to make way for the huge crowds that are sure to come. Great location and great place for happy hour. I have been here multiple times for different occasions. Their happy hour deals are good (although not as stellar as Sally's) but I do believe their drinks taste better. I have also dined here with my parents, which was hilarious because they said they use to go here to drink when they were younger. Obviously, this place is a staple for Washington Ave and for Gopher game drinking. The food was pretty good, and if you like crispy French fries you will be in heaven!! You can tell they hand cut their French fries and are cooked to perfection. Also, their appetizers were top notch as well! Recently tried the chicken tenders. I devoured them after splitting a burger with my partner. Took 2 chicken tenders home and they were delicious cold for lunch the next day. This is my go-to spot before MNUFC matches! There's a great beer selection, and the prices for 22oz glasses are fantastic (something like 6-8 bucks max). The only problem that I have is how crowded it gets, but that should be expected before a sporting event, and in dinkytown.
