It's not just a few classes I come to a week to improve my fitness and strength, but I've made some friends here which I'm excited to keep in touch with. Coming back from an injury where I tore my hip labrum from powerlifting, I've been able to see the results of my recovery and improving strength. We use MINDBODY and SugarWOD to log our workouts and check the schedule each day. The coaches are all great, are very knowledgeable, and have the perfect balance of motivating you, but not so much so that you're going to hurt yourself (Ex: Steph telling me to increase my weights after seeing my breeze through the workout). They watch your form and tell you to scale down if the form needs work. Ryan also runs a lifting program which is extremely legit complete with an excel spreadsheet where he planned out each workout to optimize your strength improvement for CrossFit in addition to adding isolation exercises that can target muscle groups that might not be as commonly used during CrossFit workout. Definitely a great addition for people who love to lift. The manager, Colin and all the front desk staff, they're very responsive on the phone and will answer all your questions for memberships. If you're going on vacation, they'll pause your membership without the hassle that comes with being a part of larger gyms (like when you thought you paused your membership but ended up getting charged several months over the summer). Customer service couldn't be better, no complaints. If you're thinking of joining up, be sure to ask about a hospital Mount Sinai discount or a student discount if you're a broke graduate student or resident. Definitely worth the investment to my health and well-being!

Saw a free class on Instagram and was curious about CrossFit. Great introductory class, amazing…read morespace and community, and shout out to Alex Miller making the class so enjoyable! The intro class was very informative but also a lot of fun. Crossfit has always been intimidating to me because of all the heavy-weight lifting. Alex was able to not only explain through his own journey with CrossFit but kept it easy to understand. I learned that CrossFit is actually an individual challenge for yourself to not only perfect your techniques but push limits you didn't know you could. That is what captivated me. The class begins with a series of warm-ups and stretches. Alex stresses the importance of form to avoid injury. He gradually transitions into your every-day exercises such as squats and then introduces a PVC stick to mimic the barbells. We did use a barbell with weights for the last set. I finally learned how to do a proper deadlift with a barbell. Alex offered plenty of direction and adjustments, which is great for someone who is starting to get into weight training. For the last 15 minutes of class, he set circuit challenges that incorporate the moves we learned. EVF shares the space with RowHouse. Rowhouse is located on the first floor and EVF gym is located on the basement level. The basement level was big enough for two classes to be happening at the same time. My only complaint would be that there are only two bathrooms for both studios (both gender neutral and have showers in them). I believe they strategically schedule the classes in order to avoid both studios end class at the same time and create chaos. All in all, I would love to come back to attend an EVF 360 class and maybe another CrossFit class with Alex!

I recently moved to the area and was eager to find a new climbing gym. I figured I'd lay out all…read morethe pros and cons, since I've been a member of many types of gyms in the past. Pros: 1) It's one of the few gyms in the area, and it offers a few ropes routes which is nice. 2) This location is chill and not crowded after work, which is a plus if you work 9-6. You never have to fight over a route even though the gym isn't huge. 3) The employees are super friendly and wonderful. We felt welcomed as soon as we walked through the door. 4) Despite not being new, it seems clean and well maintained. 5) This may be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it, but the grades are slightly soft. I'll frame this as a pro because it makes it a more approachable gym for people who are new to climbing. 6) The climbers I spoke to were all super nice. I've noticed all gyms seem to have their own "culture." This one is welcoming and approachable. 7) There seems to be a good range of setting styles. Cons: 1) While it is nice that there is a rope/sport climbing section, it is pretty teeny, the routes are short, and the grades are pretty much limited to soft 5.11+ and below. That being said, space is a hot commodity in Manhattan so I'm appreciative of any ropes gym. 2) It would be nice if they sold snacks/refreshments. Most gyms offer this and it's a nice way to get more out of your session if you forget to bring your own. 3) With approachability comes climbers who are still learning gym courtesy. Things like starting a route that overlaps with someone else's or not untying one's figure eight knot were things that I noticed. This isn't so much a reflection of the gym, but more of the gym goers which I'm sure they'll learn with time. That being said, I've really enjoyed climbing here! I love the staff and the setting is interesting. I will definitely be coming back here in the future!

This…read morewas my first time visiting this location (I've done a few barre classes otherwise) and it's a fairly small and intimate class. They were very welcoming to new people - the instructor had me come to the front and was good about adjustments and tips. I did a Classic class which was a good total body workout (arms, legs, core, etc.) Some of the moves aren't intuitive if you haven't done a barre class before. It's a lot of micro movements and holds, my muscles were sore leaving class. They also require grip socks and will make you buy some at the front if you don't have any. Definitely not cheap, but I think they also offer free trial classes or promo rates for new members.

I enjoy all of the formats with Classic and Align my favorites. Define is a nice option and I really wish they had more Align classes, so I recommend signing up early. I have noticed the workouts aren't as intense as they used to be, or I have just gotten used to them, but no matter what I leave feeling like I've gotten a good workout. The gym is small, but they have made fantastic use of the space and have all the equipment you need to run a HIIT class functionally. They also do personal training upstairs and all of the coaches are kind, knowledgeable and fun. They offer classes throughout the day so you can usually find one to work with your schedule. Scheduling can be done easily through the MindBody app. The gym runs promos so always check in to find a good deal!

My hamstrings are still sending strongly worded complaints, but I'm grateful nonetheless. This workout is no joke. It's solid, it's intense, and it lives up to the name in every way. The facility itself is clean, modern, and well-organized. Entry requires a code, which adds an extra layer of security and makes everything feel very streamlined. One thing to note: solidcore has a strict late and cancellation policy, so plan accordingly and arrive on time--no cutting corners here (they don't believe in shortcuts, and neither will your muscles). I took the starter class, which I highly recommend for first-timers. I've done Pilates before, but this is a whole different ballgame--same general idea, completely different level of intensity. The instructor did a great job explaining the movements and setting expectations, while still pushing us to our limits. You will be sore. You will shake. But you'll also leave feeling accomplished and weirdly proud of yourself for surviving. It's the kind of workout that kicks your butt, humbles you, and makes you think, "That was brutal... when can I come back?" If you're ready for a challenge and want a workout that truly delivers, solidcore is absolutely worth it.

The instructors are awesome and I rate them 10/10…read more I gave the lower stars for their booking system which is a mess and the front desk staff who has not been friendly more than once. They should not allow people to book a month ahead of time. I was a new member and had to sign up on the waiting list for every class I wanted to attend and then half of the classes were empty. Also- I had a friend in town and she wanted to book from class pass and the system showed booked and there were 4 spots open in class and they wouldn't book her. Then I found out as a member, I am allowed to bring guests which the unfriendly front desk person did not accommodate.
