Holly is a wonderful stylist. I feel very lucky to be her client. I grew up in Texas on some acres in a scarcely populated piece of country. Most of my life was spent in New York and Santa Monica. Holly's work is comparable, in many cases better, than that of the talented, sometimes famous stylists to be found in either of these places. Holly has cut my hair twice now and I have another appointment coming soon. I could not be happier with the hair situation. (Left on its own, mine has a wimpy texture with a contrary determination to spike in whimsical directions at unpredictable times. Holly has outsmarted its behavior and I am looking much better these days --- also occasionally get an unexpected compliment from a stranger. I enjoy going to the salon for many reasons It is a peaceful, comforting place. Not many beauty salons offer this degree of ease. More often there is frantic movement and lots of noise. This is an elegant salon. It is decorated with understated simplicity and taste. It is immaculately clean. The staff is gracious and attentive to their own personal responsibilities. A lovely regenerative atmosphere exists there. Holly shares this space with, among others, James, who is also a remarkably talented stylist. I had a Lifebooker deal and got a cut and partial highlights. Holly was awesome, really funny and engaging throughout the cut/color and very efficient, much shorter than other color appointments I had, though granted, it was only a single process color. The color she did was amazing. I had these bleach-based highlights that I loved but had waaaay grown out so it looked like I had a really bad ombre. She totally worked with them and added some partial highlights at the crown in this ash brown color, which I was a little afraid of because I have med-dark tan Filipino skin and dark features with a strong yellow-gold undertone, so I avoid ash anything because it totally washes me out. However, Holly totally knew her stuff because since my natural hair color is so dark brown most people think it's black, it pulls a ton of red when it's bleached and usually requires some toner to make it not look brassy and orange, the ash neutralized the brassiness and gave me the perfect color. It also blended well with my lighter ends and just gave me this wonderful flecked with gold look that popped in the sun. Love it! I need to do my roots and am afraid to go to anyone else, even with a deal. As for the cut, I mostly love it. I have this crazy thick wavy Asian hair that had a ton of damage at the ends. She cut all those nasty ends off and used a razor to thin out my hair in a way that gave me lift at top while allowing me to keep some length. It even made my face look slimmer. Only thing I didn't like were my bangs, they were layered nicely but too short, though they were nice when they grew out. I must say that the haircut has grown out nicely though, with the roots not too bad, though I'm still planning to recolor, and the structure of the cut falling nicely, though I've been trimming my bangs with a razor. Also, after the cut, I stopped using shampoos with sulfates and rotate shampoos and conditioners now between thick shea butter ones (I love Shea Moisture, which you can find at Target for 10 bucks!) a co wash, and a salicylic acid one for build-up and dandruff with a tea tree conditioner and I see barely a split end. that said, it's been months, so it's time I got another cut and color. Without the deal, a cut seems a bit out of my price range, but I may splurge on the color. read more

Seriously- the haircut you get will be spectacular and you will love it, thats gonna go without saying but what really sets Holly a part is that she genuinely cares that you leave her satisfied with her work. Holly is amazing. I have been going to her for the past 6 or 7 years and trust absolutely no one else with cutting my very short hair cut. I have thick, wavy, South Asian hair and she's able to give me a precision cut that lasts 4-6 weeks, if I really let it grow out. Holly is an exceptional communicator. She has traits that I expect to find in most hair stylists, but rarely do. Not only does she hear me when I describe what i do and do not want in my next haircut, but she is able to paraphrase what I say in her own words, and then she skillfully cuts my hair based on the criteria we discussed. I normally have my hair cut and colored in San Francisco but made arrangements in Sacramento with Holly since I couldn't make my usual appointment because of work. When I called to schedule the appointment I was given a price or $90 which seemed high, since at my salon at 49 Kearny in San Francisco (in the financial district) Li Chen, my stylist, charges $59 for the same thing. Holly did a fine job, although it was no better then Li's work. I told her exactly what color combo to use (half 6, half 7) and the length, number 5, so it was relatively easy. When we finished and I went to the front desk, she charged me $100. Yikes. In San Francisco we call that gouging. read more

Holly is a fabulous stylist! I have been going to Holly for years, since November of 2008 and haven't even considered a different stylist since then. I have difficult hair, to say the least. Thick, curly and hard to maintain without regular cuts. When I first started seeing Holly, my hair was out of control, and she shaped, colored and layered it so that it maintained itself until my next appointment. Over the years, I changed from short hair to longer hair, and she was able to work with it and style it so that I try out the new length. My hair has slightly changed over the years, adding some bangs here, some color there, some more layers here and there, etc. Holy has really been able to work with the changes I want and helped make my crazy hair more manageable than ever! I liked Acme where she was and now love Echos, both great environments with great magazines, music and atmosphere. The convenience of making appointments online and being able to have appointments after work (around 5) is a huge advantage, and makes it able to fit into my workday. Although I no longer live in San Francisco, my husband and I still insist on only seeing Holly for our haircuts/color. I've seen Holly for everything from a simple trim to highlights to getting my first side swept bang. When you tell her you only want an inch off, guess what??? She only cuts an inch! When you say you want long layers, you don't get blunt layers that take two years to grow out! She also does my husbands hair. He had the same haircut since the 80s and was reluctant to change it up. He put his full trust in her and when I saw him for the first time, no joke, I almost cried. FINALLY- he had a cool, hip hair cut! No more Marine buzz cuts from those cheap places on every corner. When he started to growing a lot of gray hair, he shyly asked Holly about coloring his hair (and didn't tell me). She did such a great job matching it to his hair color, it took me a couple hours to notice it. I'm a little crazy when it comes to certain things (hair, dentist, gynos and vets) and once I find someone I like, I stick to them like white on rice. Holly deserves every single five star review on here, and i'd love to tell every single one of you reading this as to why. First and foremost, she is extremely personable. She treats her clients as if they are friends that she has known her whole life. While she is working magic on your hair, you can expect her to be telling you some fantastic story about her travels, ambitions, and her furry dog family. As far as her actual work goes, it's impeccable. I have long, natural, dirty blonde hair, and had been neglecting cutting it or doing anything to it color wise for the last year and a half, because I was so afraid of the typical hairdresser, who always just takes too much off, and uses too much peroxide. Neither of these things are anywhere close to what Holly did. She kept all of my length, while adding some subtle layers, and then began a delicate balayage that would have you believe I spend my weeks on a sunny beach, rather than a cold office. I normally don't write Yelp reviews but unfortunately I felt that people should know about her unprofessional behavior. I bought a Lifebooker deal and was so excited to go to Holly because of the rave reviews. I asked for a health trim and she ended up taking off 6 inches and then curled my hair so I couldn't really see the final cut and how my hair fell. I realized that there were certain areas that needed to be fixed so I scheduled another appt. with her to fix the blunt and uneven cut. However she did not call me back and just sent me an email confirmation not even asking if the time worked with my schedule, I thought a phone call back rescheduling a time would have been much more professional than an email with a random appt time. When I went in she was not as friendly as before and she would not listen to what I exactly wanted. She fixed the blunt cut but our communication was off and I literally had to tell her I don't think you're listening to me and we are not connecting. She was extremely rude and as a hair stylist I feel professionalism is extremely important to maintain clientele and one needs to do what the client wants! I just wanted to give a heads up to people that you may not get the exact cut you want and may leave unsatisfied and unhappy with her customer service as I did. read more
