I rarely write negative reviews but for this place I have to. The view from the outdoor part of Study Hall is grand. Especially in the daytime. That's the only good thing I can say about the place. We waited 55 minutes and were never offered the chance to order anything, including even a simple cocktail. When we went inside to order from the bar directly, we were told that we had to order from a server outside. We finally got a nod, "I'm coming signal" from a server who wandered off and never returned. Half our party left and we moved inside to try our luck there. We flagged a waiter who started explaining how to read the qr menu to which my friend (genuinely politely) replied that we were ready to order having been there over an hour. No polite "sorry for the wait" or "we're understaffed" or "we're slammed" reply even just a friendly glance. Just a vaguely irritated look. This was followed by an awful plate of nachos (almost inedible and how hard is it to make nachos?!) and an utterly bland cocktail that seemed to have been liberated from actual alcoholic content for $16. (Oh, and if you plan to go late and sit outside, bring a duffel bag. There are no heat lamps.) read more

What a missed opportunity here! the only rooftop bar in a new hotel in Berkeley has a great panoramic view and that's it. The lighting is bright white LED's that makes it seem like a cafeteria- aesthetics The staff chased us around telling us not to sit at any of the open table bc they were reserved. The outdoor space is great but if you've been to the Bay Area before you'll know it is often windy and cold and there are no heat lamps but two tables with fire pits so people were bundled up in blankets but it was impossible for us to sit outside bc it was too cold. I noticed At least 2 TV's playing TNT Not sure what's going on here but the vibe is not good. Oh they did have a great jazz band jamming in the blazing white LED light- they were good but I felt bad that it wasn't a great set up for music. We ordered one drink that was meh- not sure about the food but I don't think I would order based on the rest of the experience. Sorry ya'll practicing radical honesty. Serious attitude adjustment and trainining needed in how to work with people - condescending, passive aggressive and not fit for this work. Maybe because it was women he had to serve or people of color - seeing how he didn't seem to have issue communicating with party next to us, mostly consisting of American white men... Went on a cold Thursday night and there were fewer than 10 parties in the whole place. Despite the fact that it wasn't busy, the waiter basically didn't wait on us. It took him 15 minutes to take our order, he checked our IDs, gave us attitude, and never came back when we finished our drinks. We tried really hard to get his attention but it seemed like we were being actively avoided. After an hour and a half we left and went to a nearby bar with much better ambiance and service. The food and drinks at Study Hall are decent but overpriced. The interesting view doesn't make the bad service or expensive food worth it. read more

The location and rooftop is great but the service is abysmal! The hostess was beyond rude to me! All I asked was if we could sit outside (normal question at a bar?) and she tries to dissuade me and says it's cold. I said that's okay can we use the blankets? She says no they are cheap and dirty. The 2 hostess gave me conflicting information when it turned out after 9 you can just sit outside and don't need to check in. Horrible service, very very rude. The young women with brown curly hair made me feel very uncomfortable and not welcome. The drinks are expensive so if I'm here and want to drink, shouldn't you just be nice and give me a table at this empty bar? It really caught me off guard as in nicer establishments like this the hostess is usually kind and accommodating. Good luck roof top bar, wouldn't hurt you to be nice to the locals! read more

A rooftop bar in Berkeley!!! Only one I know of, and it's long overdue. We went on a Thursday (with a reservation) and sat by one of the fire pits which was great. Lovely views, really great food (we ordered a lot of things, I think the burger/sliders was my favorite). Really delicious cocktails, good wine list, etc. Staff/service was friendly and attentive. Looking forward to going back when they open up for brunch! Oh, and I forgot to mention they have live music! I think it's most weeknight evenings, and definitely on the weekends. read more

We were excited to try this place. The view is fun. But we were seated right by a door that was wide open to the outdoor deck. We saw blankets outside but none were offered inside. When we asked if we could move (to ANY open table; there were many), as we were cold, our waiter acted put out. Some waitstaff seemed great but our waiter was curt and rude. For example, in response to a simple question as to whether tofu could be the protein choice for the rice bowl, he told us "it says right on the menu what the three options are". (There are digital menus only and we had everything else in our order memorized.) We were really surprised and, unfortunately, just wanted our meal to be over as a result. read more

I really want to love this place and have it be my new go-to spot, but... Why no heaters on the patio?? This is Berkeley. It's frequently windy and cold. Outdoor heaters (available at many other dining establishments, but none with so nice a view) transform a miserable chilly evening into a comfortable experience that makes us want to linger and order another round. My friends and I will be sitting outside exclusively for the foreseeable future. So many people have mentioned this in their reviews, but the business owner hasn't yet responded. We went for dinner and drinks Fri, 3/11. It was obvious that they still have a lot to figure out, however that is to be expected when any place first opens. Little things like the host not giving out menus while seating guests, wait staff still learning the menu, food runners not knowing the table numbers and serving orders to the wrong table, etc., etc. This review is NOT a critique of those things, as they tend to get ironed out a few months into being open. However, we wanted to point out a few things in the hopes that management will read the reviews and take them into account. We feel that Berkeley is starved for places like the Study Hall, and if they do it right, it can be a great destination for residents, and huge revenue maker for them. To start with the positives, the view is amazing. You can see most of the City of Berkeley, the practice tennis courts at the UC, the back side of The Greek Theatre, the Tower Clock at UC, downtown Oakland, the Bay Bridge, and S.F.. It truly is a view that does exist at any other Berkeley location. In addition, the staff was amazing! Despite some minor snafu's in service, they were all incredibly nice, welcoming, and hospitable. They are definitely still trying to find there identity. We were there at 5pm and the crowd was predominately 40+ , yet they were blasting shitty electronica music. They had a handful of the smaller trendy looking heat lamps for a patio that can accommodate probably 100 people or more. It is Berkeley, and as soon as the sun began to set, it got cold and windy up there. They will need to add more heat up there if anyone is going to want to stay out there past 8pm. As far as the food, I'd say it was sub-par at best. What you would expect for Marriott "hotel food". We had the Cauliflower nuggets, which were tasty and plated well. We had the grilled baja fish tacos, which were fine and also plated well. However, we also ordered the Pork Belly Banh Mi and it was simply horrible. It was almost all bread, which was very dry. The "pickled " carrots and Daikon were maybe pickled for 5 mins, also dry. The Pork Belly tasted like it had been under a heat lamp all day, and one half of the sandwich had only one slice of pork belly the size of my thumb. It really was the equivalent of what you would expect from a school cafeteria or Subway. In addition, it was plated on a "faux" paper plate looking dish , which isn't what you expect when you are dropping $150 on 2 people at a place. It seemed as if the the chef for the appetizers was completely different than the chef for the mains. And the change in the plating standard was really baffling. As it stands, it is definitely more of an appetizer and drinks spot for now. They seem to be targeting the younger crowd with the D.J.'s, the additional specialty drink bars on the patio, and having food be an afterthought. Hopefully they realize that the real money maker is the affluent Berkeley residents that are looking for more fine dining options in Berkeley. Not to mention the parents of athletes traveling to Berkeley to watch their children compete who would like a decent meal coupled with ambiance. We did not complain once, tipped our waitress very well, and will go back in a few months to grab a drink and see what adjustments have been made. We wish the place well! read more

Goodness gracious, this restaurant is not ready to be open. We came to Study Hall to enjoy the warm sun and rooftop views but the host said that the only tables available were inside. Not because there weren't any tables, but because the servers outside couldn't handle any more new guests. Those were his words. No big deal, truly. He sat us by a window inside where we could look out toward the Oakland/ Emeryville skyline. We sat down, and stayed sat for almost 20 minutes before someone came. She apologized for the wait, and asked if she could put anything in for us. We ordered drinks and made sure to put our food in as well, to offset anymore waiting. After another 30 minutes our food came out, to which I ordered another appetizer and we reminded our server that we had ordered drinks. She said they only had 1 bartender so the drinks would take a second. This is after other parties had come in, gotten their drinks and sat outside. I saw another party of two come in, sit down, and leave due to not being served. Finally after an hour since we had ordered our drinks, and just as I was taking my last bite of food, our drinks were dropped off on our table. No word, no apology for the wait. Mind you these were the only times she came to our table, in a restaurant that was not busy at all. Our drinks were an Aperol spritz, and a Kombucha spritz, not craft cocktails, nothing fancy. It was a very disappointing experience. The price of the food and drinks, were not reflective of their quality. I would save yourself the trouble and find a more established venue if you're looking to have a nice rooftop dining experience. read more

Sitting outside, the expansive views are phenomenal. It was just before sunset when we arrived and the transition to the nighttime view was lovely. Inside, the mostly youngish crowd looked to be having a great time. Considerably older, it would have been impossible for us to have a conversation. No problem on the outside deck. Our drinks were good, the brussel sprouts, as reviewed elsewhere , really good. We also had the 3 fish tacos, one each and one shared. The Sticky Toffee cake was a serious disappointment. Very dry cake and bland whipped topping, not the hoped-for whipped heavy cream. Our server was very attentive and he made helpful recommendations for drinks and bites. This is a great location--amazing views of the campus from a 12th story perch. I came here after work on campus and found it very chill. Our server, Martin, was especially friendly and helpful. Let me begin with the good stuff; the view is nice and it's a brand new spot; I liked that a lot! That's why I am leaving a 3 star review. Looked like they're still figuring things out which caused delays in seating arrangements, coordination between staff and preparing food/appetizers (we got our main dishes first and then the appetizer arrived). The staff were all courteous and tried to correct their team's mistakes. Considering the outdoor seating on a rooftop in Berkeley I was surprised that they were not equipped with heaters, it was chilly and became unpleasant within an hour after the sunset. On a recent visit to the Study Hall Rooftop Lounge I uncovered a few glitches. First was the challenge of getting access to the lounge as a 'walk-in' guest. None of the hotel staff knew the process for escorting guests to the Study Hall Lounge. I arrived 15 minutes before the Study Hall was scheduled to open at 4:30 pm. The front desk told me that guests must be escorted to the 12th floor by the lounge hostess. I was told to wait by the lounge sign in the Lobby until the Hostess arrived to escort me up to the 12th floor. At 4:30 pm no Hostess arrived in the Lobby. I stood waiting by the Study Hall sign with several other people until 5pm. Still no Hostess. Plenty of hotel staff were milling around in the Lobby. Not one staff person asked me if I needed any help. I went to the Front Desk at least 4 times to tell them that the hostess never showed up to escort me to the lounge. Each time the front desk staff called for a hostess to come down to escort me to the rooftop, but no one responded Finally after more than 30 minutes passed, a Front desk staff person decided to escort me up to the lounge herself. Obviously more staff training is needed to provide a more streamlined process for guests to access the Study Hall Lounge and provide better customer service. The Study Hall servers are attentive once you able to finally get a staff person to escort you up to the lounge. read more
