You absolutely cannot beat the view from the Study Hall rooftop. Especially on a warm day, It is so worth it. All the drinks we have had here have been good though it does take a while to get them (totally understandable given it can get busy). Everyone who works here seems very nice. The only downside was the food. We tried nachos, edamame, and a protein bowl and none were very good unfortunately. Definitely seems like a better place to go for ambiance and a drink after dinner but not a great place to go for a meal. read more

I came here tonight to watch the game, I had drinks and some stuff to eat. I had nothing to eat with and no napkin. I disregarded it, our waiter was a a older woman. We scanned our menu an she brought us out one. Another gentleman brought our food and sauces. Towards the end I left no tip and she comes hunting me down by the balcony saying dis I do something wrong, I'm like huh? [Halfway tipsy] She's like no tip I said no? It's not mandatory it's voluntary. Then she says this is America. I'm a minimum wage worker. So surprised looking at my bf face she goes I'm sorry I even asked , this girl really ruined a calm night over nothing. If she so worried about a tip which she didn't even ask if we needed anything the entire time, she should find another job instead of coming to verbally attack me infront of multiple people. Atmosphere is very nice. Food was good but not noteworthy. Hostess was pleasant but the servicer was very poor.

i took my girlfriend for her birthday celebration and everything was right on point. They saved my life with their extra friendly service and amazing food. Service was awful, actually didn't even get served! We had drinks at the bar, one round and the bartender didn't even seem excited to serve us. My friend, a guest at the hotel, was applauded with the service. I asked another server that was around our area to place an order and she said she would send our server. The sever went to every table but ours and when asked hey can I place an order he said I'll be back. Mind you the tables he visited didn't place an order at all three tables. I was hangry at this point, I finished my drink and got up. I mentioned to the hostess who was super friendly my experience, she didn't want to give the servers name. I am in the industry as well, bartender and vip server. I was disappointed, but understood. I spoke with a manager on my way out who didn't seem to care much. She invited us back on another day, but my friend was here performing tonight and looking for a simple meal before the show. No food was had, can't rate that. We've been living on Center Street for 10 years and surely welcome this wonderful addition to the neighborhood - The Study Hall Lounge. Our hostess, Grace, was outstanding. Set us up perfectly in front of the flat screen to watch the game. Karim was super service waiter and took good care of us. The kitchen was on pointe: great nachos with steak, and delicious smashed potatoes with yummy ketchup on them. There was live music and all around a great time. Staff was really nice. Lovely ambience on the roof, fireplace was very nicely set up. We'll be back! read more

I really, really wanted to like this place. I've been there 4 times - I keep giving it another chance. The very pricy food is just mediocre, which I'd be okay with if the staff were friendly and the setting was beautiful but it's just not the case. The terrace is nice (on a warm day only - there are no heaters and it's windy on the rooftop) but you have beg them to let you sit out there. From maître d' to bartender to manager ... all act as if you are bothering them. I've never experienced a restaurant as unfriendly as this one. read more

Me and my sister's were looking for a nice rooftop and came across this one. First off the the view of the bay was amazing... but the food was not so good. We ordered the calamari .. tasted like it was still alive. Then we ordered the shrimp tacos ‍. Presentation was cute, but trying to eat a fried jumbo colossal shrimp on a taco shell was very time consuming.. to say the least. The shrimp didn't have no favor. Lastly we tried the smashed fries .. let's just say they stayed very consistent. We waited over 30 mins for our drinks. We actually was done eating before we got our drinks. Our waiter "Tyler" was awesome and i know we probably got on his nerves complaining about our food but he was great and kept a smile and provided awesome customer service . Overall i would definitely go back just to have a drink and look at the view. read more

F, this place. We wanted to go here for dinner on a normal Saturday night. No way to reserve a table unless you have a party of 10. Proceeded anyway, told we could have a table outside on a windy cold night. My husband found us a spot by the bar and ordered drinks. I went to the restroom and enjoyed the conversation of 3, 19 y.o. Stating how drunk they were and how the staff believed their IDs. Meanwhile me, a 41 y.o. Was carded for a $15 beer. We wanted to eat here and approached the stand 3 times to be told there were no tables. Yet empty "reserved" tables surrounded the bar. We moved seats and they demanded we close our tab for the first spot. We asked 3 times for them to clean the. Spot they were sitting at to no avail. We finally left. BTW the 19 yr. Extremely overpriced!! If that's your thing- you'll love it. $11&$12 pints of beer. Overpriced food. Cooked on the first floor (?), when food arrived it was barely warm, dry and lacked seasoning. We got sliders- DRY, (fried cheese, not melted?? Really??) Brussels sprouts- covered in honey, great if you're 20 years old, and sesame chicken salad, fair but dry. Will not go back. Many other choices nearby. Save your money, go elsewhere twice for what you pay at this rip off place. read more

An amazing rooftop lounge in Berkeley. The service was perfect, our server Martin was very attentive and friendly since we sat down. He would check in constantly to see if we needed anything else and contributed to an amazing experience. The manager Jesus was also incredibly friendly, he would check in to see if everything was ok and made sure his team was doing well also. The view was breathtaking and the food was delicious. Went here with my girlfriend a few weeks ago. We ordered two ciders, just two ciders. After 25 minutes of waiting I got up to look for our waiter. I attended a soft opening and was very impressed by the amazing service and views! If you are looking for a wow factor view with amazing drinks....this is the place! The views are breathtaking! Not only do you get a great view of the UC Berkeley campus/city... you can also see the downtown city lights of both downtown Oakland and SF. The decor is modern chic, they play good music which gives the lounge a chic/ romantic ambiance. If you are looking to impress on a first date or just want to have a good night out, this is the best option in Berkeley! The rooftop deck is lit up with fun lights and has a cozy feel with the comfy furniture and fire pits throughout. The food was good too! My favorite dishes were the Pork Belly tacos and the avocado beef salad. Lastly, it is also kid friendly! It's hard to find a nice date night venue that is kid friendly and I was pleasantly surprised by their accommodations! They have high chairs available and a kids menu! Perfect for a mom/dad day out even if you have to bring your kiddos! Our baby is 9 months old and even she had a great time! Her favorite menu items were the tots and the cauliflower nuggets! Wow! Our first visit to Study Hall and there aren't enough superlatives to use to describe how much we enjoyed our evening! Master mixologist Jerry served us unique and delicious creations, the food was outstanding! We arrived right at sunset and the view was amazing. Server Yuki was a whirling dervish and kept the guests happy. We are so delighted to have discovered Study Hall and we will be back soon!! read more

One of the reasons I booked a stay at this Marriott was the beautiful dog-friendly rooftop lounge, but my experience was very disappointing. At 4:45 when I arrived, the place was EMPTY. I sat in the shade and then quickly realized how cold it was with the breeze (the temperature is 70 right now) so I asked to move to the sun. I was told those tables are reserved, but they offered a blanket. Then there's the issue of the LOOOOUD music - don't bother coming here if you're interested in A) relaxing or B) having a conversation. I took my food and wine to go and went back to my room, where I discovered that the stale tortilla chips and worthless queso were a complete waste of my $15. Also do not recommend the sesame salad. read more

This place seems fun, really nice decor and ambience, but the service was really poor. We sat at the bar. We had to ask to order food, ask for another round of drinks and to ask for our bill. The bartender seem too interested in making drinks in the well and ignores her guest at the bar. This is unfortunate because my experience would've been better. I hope the rest of the bartenders have a better attitude than her. read more

Study Hall Rooftop Lounge is a beautiful space. But it is horrible if you just want to drop in or meet up with a small group of friends. They won't let you spit a tab with more than two people. We had a group of eight and wanted to split it three ways but they would only do it two. They wouldn't allow individual tabs. We could order drinks at the bar but not food. We had to order food with a server. The bartender actually complained that we were ordering drinks from the bar. I'm being generous and giving them three stars because they are new. Go for the view, go somewhere else that welcomes your business. read more

This new bar in the new hotel is disappointing. I thought it would have some sort of character but it's just a hotel bar & cafe. Way overpriced. Service was bad. Waiter kept disappearing -- I had to walk over to him twice in order to catch him before he disappeared again. Food nothing special. Saturday night, a deafening band played. Nice views. We enjoyed the cocktail, snacks and great view, and the service was good.Our main complaint was that the music was so loud that it made it very difficult to talk. I wish there were areas with no speakers for those of us who would like to hear each other. I also agree with the reviewer that patio heaters would be excellent! We were staying at the Residence Inn. I called and asked if we needed to make a reservation at Study Hall and was told I did not. When we checked in I asked again. When we arrived at 5 p.m. we were told we could not sit outside unless we had a reservation and there were no reservations until 8 p.m. We sat at the bar and observed open seats up and until the time we left at 7:15 p.m. The food is soso bar food. Had we been seated outside and asked pleasantly if we could leave by 7 p.m. or had someone told me to make a reservation I would have been fine. But this was pretty awful. read more

I was so excited for a nice rooftop lounge - - and while it didn't disappoint, it was a little meh. The food was fine, the music was too loud, the views are terrific. The service was hotel-good -- in that clearly everyone had been trained to be "extremely polite" - but very anonymous. Basically, a hotel bar - which sometimes is awesome. The view is EPIC. And the drinks were great, the food tasty. HOWEVER, I reserved the firepit for a large party. We had dear friends, professors from Mexico City, joining us for the first time since the pandemic. We were excited to share this beautiful spot with them. I made the reservation in person and then called back the next day to change the party size and to confirm the reservation. All that went very smoothly. But when we arrived ON TIME with 8 guests on a beautiful and crowded Saturday night, the hostess had given away our firepit. I am not sure how this happened but she was only slightly apologetic, despite my protestations. We sat at another table and had to wait 45 minutes for drinks. I could have been assuaged if there had been something taken off our bill and if the hostess had truly apologized and tried to do something to make it right. Unfortunately, neither of those things came to pass. Study Hall is a gorgeous and popular spot but they need to get their act together. read more
