This is a great place for vegetarians and vegans. Our group was made up of vegetarians and a meat eater. We all enjoyed the buffet. There were so many choices and all that we had were good. The waitress was very friendly and did not hover over us but was always in eyesight in case we needed help. The restaurant was clean and neat. Definitely worth the 1 1/2 drive to get there! This place was not good. We actually laughed as we sat eating our dinner because we had driven out to Malvern for it. There were only two other tables in the place occupied and the buffett was sparce to say the least. I am hoping that we went at a bad time like one of the other reviewers mentioned. I hate to give bad reviews of small businesses, but I also hate wasting hard earned money. After going to Govinda's and many other good vegetarian restaurants, I was sorely disappointed. The food itself was not "bad" but it definitely was not good either. On the positive side, the people in charge seemed very nice and I don't remember it being too overpriced. Been coming here many years.... and I'll admit it's divey and always has been (which I like). If you are looking for a high end, fancy Chinese spot this is not the place for you. The decor is all over the map, but I don't come here to stare at what's on the walls. I come for the buffet (although I have also eaten off their menu), which is solid. Tons of options... pretty much what you would expect from a Chinese buffet but all vegan. I have not experienced any negatives as far as the food goes- it was all fresh, and they were very attentive as far as keeping the food stocked and making sure you had the options you wanted. Prices are reasonable for what you get. There is simply nothing like this in the Philly burbs- vegan options are few and far between. This is a bright spot for sure. read more

You can't go wrong going to Su Tao. The variety of options is beyond belief. The staff is very helpful. You can eat a healthy meal or go with some pretty fatty and high calorie deliciousness. Su Tao is not your Bells and whistles vegan place, it's quiet and the food is good and a variety is offered. The employees are sweet and it's never crowded which is nice, I think. Okay, I am a meat eater but have been moving into eating less of it. A couple that my husband and I know are vegan and wanted to give this place a try. It wasn't what I expected, only because I was thinking it would be a little more "upscale." It's your basic buffett with the meat (and in some cases gluten) removed. I didn't find that any of the selections couldn't have been made at home. I did like that it was BYOB although it wasn't advertised anywhere so we didn't know until we got there. The steamed dumplings were very good and other than that I can't think of anything I loved. read more

This is my favorite vegan restaurant, hands down. I used to frequent this place when I lived in Pennsylvania. I find myself craving their food even now, 3 years after I've moved away. Every time I come back home to visit I make sure to stop by and get my fix. Another awesome all vegetarian(but not vegan) restaurant is Devi, located near the Exton mall. STRICTLY reviewing the waitress- first of all, all she does is come over to your table and repeatedly fill your plastic cup with ice cold water, doesnt even ask. she doesnt greet you, say thank you, smile, NOTHING! the last time i was in for take out and i do go here a lot- i mentioned how long me and my family have been coming here and she says nothing, just asked me to sign for my credit card. so rude. i dont know how she's not fired, by now. read more

I was pretty excited to eat here, especially because it's pretty much the only buffet I could eat at that was entirely vegetarian. Even at an Indian buffet, you have to worry about something being made with chicken or lamb. That was what was especially nice about it. I probably only really enjoyed about 2/3 of the stuff they had on the buffet, but it was worth it to get to try all these foods that I haven't ever tried. I have to say, however, that my meat-eating boyfriend was not crazy about it. Good, fun thing to try for a vegetarian, but maybe leave your less adventurous meat-eating friends at home. read more

Amazing Chinese buffet for vegans and nonvegans alike!

I am happy to say that my experience today was the best I've had in years. For starters, I stopped my weekly visit to SuTao do to the rude waitress that always made my weekly long trip very unpleasant, to find she has been replaced by a nice young man. Woohoo, new waiter. The previous waitress always made me feel uncomfortable by only suggesting the buffet and never allowing us the view the menu. She would never speak to us and at first I assumed it was a language barrier, to later see her having a full blown conversation in English with another customer. She was just mean....I love the SuTao's food and the owners, but once the trips became unpleasant I knew it was time for me to stop those frequent trips. Now that I know the bad element is gone I will definitely find myself making my weekly long trips again. read more

I've been going for a few years and have never even looked at a menu. Always just roll with the buffet - it's got enough tasty stuff on it that I haven't felt the need to branch out. It's pretty much my default for eating out when I'm sticking to the suburbs. There are several dishes I really like (my favorite is probably the mock duck in the corner), and their spicy sushi sauce is fairly addictive. Your experience here is better here during the main dinner hours (more frequent refills of buffet line) and if you avoid the sprinkling of Indian items (weak link in the buffet line). On holidays they often have an extra table of fancier buffet items. They're really good, but it's a bit out of my price range. So if you're less cost-conscious than I, come on a holiday! read more

Let's talk about the food first. The flavours are pretty good and there are plenty selections for the lunch buffet. Here comes the "However." They use either potato starch or corn starch a bit too much...it can be found in most of the dishes. We must caught the bad rotation, because we didn't see any food that were displayed in the photos here. Now, about the environment: it's quiet and the music is fairly soothing. I think these can be compliment by a better table setting. We were not impressed with the plastic sheets that they covering the table cloth. You can tell some of them have NOT been wiped down for awhile, too. The storage area by the main dinning is definitely an eyesore unless you face the other way. We will go back again, but just won't be as often. read more

Being the meat eater in the group I was a little apprehensive about a 100% vegan eatery but I found everything to be delicious and there was such a selection I loved it. I really liked the fake meat options but more so I enjoyed some of the not even supposed to be meat offerings like the sea weed salad. Recently, two groups (Compassion for Animals, Respect for the Environment and Friends of Animals) that my partner Steve and I are affiliated with co-hosted a dinner at Su Tao Cafe. Many attendees (almost 50) appreciated the more-than-to-be-expected care that went into ensuring a successful and enjoyable evening. There was an ample amount of delicious food, specially prepared for our party, provided in many varied dishes at a price that would be unmatched anywhere else. Su Tao is our favorite restaurant. It's a place where we are always welcome to indulge in the buffet or choose from the menu (both excellent), with timely service always provided with a smile, at a reasonable cost - a place where one is never hurried out the door, but can feel free to linger in an atmosphere of friendship as long as one wants. BYO is always welcome. We are so grateful to have this vegan establishment in our community. read more

The selection is great for an inexpensive, all you can eat place. The salad bar has some unique items, and everything was really fresh. The cooked food tasted great-- lots of asian flavored vegetables, and even indian style chickpeas! I don't like meat substitutes, but my friend said the curry chicken was amazing. I have a few complaints though: 1. The cooked food is incredibly greasy. I'm a vegan who can put down several plates of food, but I felt sick after eating one good size plate (cooked food, not the salad) here. I'm used to vegan food making my body feel really good. Here I just wanted to curl up into a ball and take a nap. It brought back memories of the fast food I used to eat ten years ago. 2. The guy next to us asked the waiter if the lemonade (which was free, along with tea, iced tea and simple desserts!) had sugar in it. The waiter, who was not fluent in english, said ".....uh.... no... no sugar!". The guy tasted it and found it had sugar. (Is it lemonade without sugar? For the record, the waiter was super nice and worked his butt off.) 3. This, along with the fact that the dessert tray had whole foods 365 cookies, and the beverage fridge had coke in it, leads me to believe that these people are unaware that some vegans don't eat refined sugar. I'm super strict about not eating sugar refined with animal bone char, and i'm used to vegan resturaunts being very aware of their ingredients. I wondered if they were overlooking anything else, (...but that may be unfair of me). Afterwards, I swung by whole foods, and it's possible that the sugar they use in their 365 cookies is vegan, but it did _not_ say "vegan" anywhere on the box (and whole foods is very veg-aware). No way I was going to get an informed answer on the sugar in the lemonade they served, but I know Coke doesn't use strictly vegan sugar. read more

Vegan for those who aren't vegans. A bit dive-like, but their menu has enough variety to let even a devout meat eater find something they can't complain about. Like most Chinese places there's a bit more salt in many dishes than I'd like to see......but what else is news? I loved eating at Su Tao; tasty salty, fried food, as much of it as I could eat.. and all vegan. That's what I thought and that is what they advertise. So, the offense here (and I'm speaking to my fellow vegans) is their deserts are not vegan. And they do not make it known to the customer either. Today I noticed the package in which they purchase their apple pie was left out next to the desert table, and I couldn't help but notice the box looked like a box you'd buy at a standard chain grocery store's bakery, and we all know the vegan desert bakery options at the major supermarkets are nilch. So I waited for the man at the front desk to tend to his business in the back of the restaurant before I worked up the courage to grab the box up close for a thorough inspection. And listed plainly and clearly in the ingredients were milk, eggs, and honey. As startling as that was, it was nothing to prepare me for the owner to suddenly appear behind me demanding what I was doing, and he did, grabbing the box as I asked if the cake was vegan, to which he gave an unconvincing "that's what they tell us where we buy it." And before I said anything else, he ripped off the ingredients sticker for the trash can and retreated to the front desk. So, speaking to fellow vegans, Su Tao, as wonderful as the cooking may be, is not a vegan establishment, as the owner lied to me about the vegan integrity of the dessert (that, or he cannot read..). That speaks volumes concerning my trust in anything else advertised as "vegan" at the restaurant which I used to love stuffing my face. read more

Someone suggested that I try this place. If not for the recommendation I'm fairly certain that I would never even know that this place exists. It's in Malvern and only a minute away from the Wegmans, but it's tucked away and easy to miss, at least for me. A really interesting experience. We showed up for dinner on a Saturday night and got the dinner buffet for about $13 that included some drinks (water, unsweetened iced tea, lemonade), salad and cold vegetables, soup, hot entrees and dessert. Full disclosure, I'm a meat eater. But for various reasons I do cook 1-2 vegetarian meals a week. Very rarely vegan, just because it's so much more difficult to come up with vegan meal ideas. They have a pretty good selection. About half of the buffet is devoted to salad, vegetables, fruit and other cold items such as a vegetable sushi. There is a ginger dressing that my wife loves and other condiments such as a wasabi, dumpling sauce, hot oil, homemade sushi sauce, etc. The hot items are miso and hot & soup soup, natively vegan things such as vegetable tempura, spring rolls, veggie fried rice, white rice, veggie low mien, stir fried vegetables, sweetened yam chunks, pita bread (to go with hummus from the cold bar), etc. and then the meat-substitute items such as a sweet and sour meatballs, pepper steak, General Tso's chicken, a duck stir fry, etc. I tried almost everything and and the only thing I didn't care for was the crispy chicken dish. The outside was a fried breading like a chicken tender, but the inside with a uniform, crab-cake like texture and consistency. The taste was a little too strange for this relatively newcomer to vegan eating. The desserts when we went included deep dish apple pie, chocolate cake, fried banana (from the hot entree bar), generic golden Oreos, a shortbread cookie-like thing, and some sort of crunchy nut toffee square. Service was way above average for a buffet and the value was phenomenal. We'll definitely visit again when we're in the mood for vegan. read more

One of my go-to places when I am back in PA. I can bring veggie and meat lovers alike, and both leave happy and very full. Some were in denial that there was no meat because everything was so tasty. There are so few all vegetarian/vegan restaurants, so it's great as a vegetarian to be able to eat whatever you'd like off the menu (or buffet). I agree with some of the other reviewers that it is best to come during a peak time (or when they just open for lunch or dinner) as the food will be the most fresh. If they're out of something on the buffet, just ask, and they will bring out more and sometimes deliver some first to your table. read more

I'm not a vegetarian, but several of my co-workers are, so I've been to this buffet for lunch several times. The food is OK, I admit some of the dishes are hard to believe are vegetarian, they taste and feel like meat. However, there is nothing here I think is exceptional, and I think the place is a dark and uninviting. 3 stars though, for providing a decent vegetarian buffet that even a meat eater can enjoy. read more

My wife and I drive all the way from Berks county to eat here. She is a strict vegetarian and I just love veggie food. The food is simple yet SO good. Their desserts are really good and I'm never dissapointed in what they have. It's not a fancy place or pretentious. The owners are very friendly, always have their little daughter (grand daughter, maybe) But, if you want classic americanized chinese food that is totally vegan and really tastes good, then come here. read more

Been going there for a few years. Great buffet. Not every item is 5 star. As mentioned, there are some deep-fry, doughy dishes. But there is also a large fruit/salad section. With all the choices, I would think anyone can find a dozen or two items to their liking. I have to admit, at times the waitress can be a bit abrupt. But certainly doesn't deserve a one star rating. It's always a treat for our family of vegetarians to go here. We have 2 small children and we feel comfortable here and the kids love the food. Sometimes the buffet isn't the freshest but when it is it's top notch. More than even the yummy food I love the staff. This is my favourite restaurant. The prices are great, the food is delicious, and they offer takeout if you don't have enough time for the buffet. They also have this mysterious dish that I admittedly have no idea what it's made of (they call it crispy veggie chicken, or something like that), but they are my favourite food on the entire planet. I could eat 2 lbs of them if given the opportunity (if you're familiar with futurama, they are poplars). Su Tao have great customer service, especially for a buffet, and they'll always make more of a dish you ask. read more

The servers here are polite, but not necessarily friendly (not intrusive, however!). The lunch buffet is a good deal, especially when you bring a huge appetite. I mostly get what would be appetizers or sides, but I've never left feeling hungry. Which can be pretty rare as a vegan! I like their take on typical nonvegan items... The spicy mayo sauce for sushi is good! The spicy cucumber salad is awesome, too. I come here very often. read more

I was part of a large party and the whole experience of dining at Su Tao was just wonderful. The food was varied and very tasty and the servers couldn't have been more gracious. This was the second time I ate at SuTao; what a wonderful experience! It's worth the drive from where-ever you are. It's top-notch vegan Chinese food. The food is SO fresh and delicious; satisfying to all people, whether vegan, vegetarian, or veg curious. I'm vegan and I thoroughly enjoyed everything served at this restaurant. They serve a variety of food and the staff is super friendly and accomodating. My favorite on this day was the seawood salad and the sweet/tangy eggplant dish. The portions are beyond generous and the prices are extremely reasonable. The food is not only delicious but so healthy at the same time. The non-veg people sitting next to us at our table simple adored the food! SuTao is the place to go if you want fresh, delicious and healthy plant based foods; their desserts are fantastic and dairy free. Check it out; I look forward to going back soon.
