Spice is a good local option for lunch or dinner in Newtown Square. We've been a few times now, and stopped by last night for dinner. We got: -Samosa Chat: We usually start with this when we're here, and for good reason: it's always a great appetizer. The mixture of flavors and textures is really nice. -Tulip Dumplings: This was my first time trying this dish at Spice. The filling texture was kind of dry and off-putting, and I didn't really taste any of the promsied shrimp or crabmeat. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but I personally would not order these again. -Cauliflower Bezule: Another first time ordering this here, but it was the opposite of my dumpling experience. This cauliflower was delicious! It was super crispy, and bathed in a really rich and savory coconut sauce. This is an app I would get again. -Lamb Korma: The lamb was cooked well and the sauce was creamy and flavorful. One note: We ordered this with a "medium" spice level and it didn't have any heat whatsoever. I would have appreciated some heat to balance out the weetness of the sauce. Service here is always good; the waitstaff is so nice! They also are quick to make drink refill rounds and clear away any empty plates. There was no one there when we went but saw a few people doing takeout. The restaurant was roomy so it looked like it could accommodate a good amount of people. The papdi chat was good so it looked promising but the malai kofta was too sweet and the chicken biriyani was very bland. Service was a bit slow but I guess it was that kind of night. Naan was good but I guess you can't really mess up naan. The lights kept flickering, which was sla but annoying. Don't think we will be coming back. read more

I used to eat here In past and food was good. Last night I ordered navratan korma. A vegetarian dish that was terrible. The vegetables were frozen undercooked vegetables so hard that I had difficulty cutting them with a knife and difficult to chew . It was 80 percent frozen crinkle cut carrots a piece of frozen cauliflower and a couple of frozen broccoli stems. It tasted like they poured too sweet store bought sauce over undercooked frozen carrots . Whereas the vegetable should have been simmered in the sauce to absorb flavour of sauce .not stirred in . When the waiter eventually came to ask how everything was long after i was served the food. a i was only customer in the restaurant ..i told him it was under cooked n he made no attempt to correct the food or compensate me I n any way. Then to add insult to injury on the bill I was charged more than menu price . Which waiter refunded the difference in price per my request after the fact.. I can see why restaurant was empty. Only one couple came at end of my meal for dine in and one for take out. Sad. It used to b great. And menu had many appealing options. I would never go back. W so many great Indian restaurants in recent years no reason to give it another chance . read more

Superb excellence from start to finish! We arrived on a night when apparently dining in was not the choice of those who enjoy this unique restaurant's food. It was clear people enjoy the food based on the steady stream of take out orders. But, who is to complain when you get to have a restaurant's dining room all to yourselves? And, we were treated with just the right amount of attentiveness that one would expect from a restaurant where you have the help to yourselves. The choice of Indian or Thai I have to admit is unique and I wasn't sure which nation's cuisine would be chosen for the evening but it was a journey only to India so the Thai Bistro food options will be left for another evening. This restaurant is a BYOB, which is always a bonus when you head out for dinner. The appetizer choices of Samosa's and Chicken Pakora were absolutely the perfect starters. The lightness of the Samosa and its blend of flavors may have given me the best Samosa of my life! The Pakora also had the lightness and taste that caused them to vanish from the plate in the perfect mint and tamarind chutney's. Chicken Korma done to perfection and hooking my friend who was hesitant about Indian cuisine. My Lamb Vindaloo was so so good with its spices encouraging me to eat more. The plentiful basmati rice balanced out the meal! The bonus (Not sure if it is always available.) just by checking in on YELP we saved 15% ... of course with service like we received that money just increased the tip! Had lunch for 2 at Spice. We were the only ones seated although there were some takeout orders. We tried the cauliflower beluze appetizer - it was very flavorful and a decent sized serving. We tried 3 mains - evil jungle princess with tofu, goat saag, and butter chicken. We ordered them all spicy (like a 4 out of 5). Every one of the dishes were home runs - the 2 Indian dishes had very complex flavors and plenty of meat. The Thai dish was aromatic and delicious. They also provided the correct type of rice for using with the Thai or Indian foods. I can't wait to head back again! read more

I have tried many Indian restaurants and this place has the best Tendori Chicken, great Tendori flavor, juicy (NOT Dry), and on the sizzling platter with onions. Yum Yum Descent price too. I've been here a couple times before heading to the Regal Movie Theater. The food is good. My most recent order was samosas, tulip dumpling and the salmon appetizer (cannot remember the name). My companions ordered the spring rolls, chicken satay and soups - they liked their food as well. The mango lassi is pretty good as well. Every time I've come to Spice, there has only been 1 waiter. Currently, it seems like there is more take-out orders than dine in (unsure if this is due to COVID). I would recommend this place. read more

I am not a Thai guy, but my fiancé loves it so we decided to go to Spice before the movies. It was much better than I anticipated. They do a great job with the menu having classic Thai dishes but also alternative items. I ordered the Thai basil with chicken and it was very good with great portion size. The rice is the dominant part of the meal but is accompanied by onions, snap peas, and red peppers. The staff is very personable and made sure we were able to eat with enough time before the movie. The staff here are super nice as they took time to ask us how we were doing. Chettanadu goat is so good, very spicy and flavored well. I know it tastes good when I don't have that gamey smell when I bite into the goat. Can't quite put a finger on it, but the aromatic spices and curry leaves were so strong and gave it such a good smell and taste that one spoonful in my mouth, I already knew I'd be getting seconds. Get the biryani special, it's got a strong kick in there to spice it up. Good blend of the goat, rice, spices and since it's the special, they added a sauce inside to kick it up a notch. The bread basket was enough naan and bread to eat for the whole night, which was awesome, give it a try. Mixed it with plain, garlic, green onions, a variety of different flavored ones. Didn't feel rushed and it's BYOB, so big parties were here cause it's fun especially when there is a wine store next door and you can bring your friends here to enjoy food without being rushed. read more

This is my new favorite traditional Indian restaurant! Last night we had a group of seven come together (most who had never eaten Indian food before) and were delighted with not only the hospitality but the mouth watering food! The interior and style of the restaurant is simple yet the flavorful dishes are bursting full of flavor and you'll have a hard time choosing just one. We tried many different appetizers like Vegetable Somosas, Onion Baji, Shrimp Tadka and other specials that were additions to the menu. I couldn't get enough of the mint and chutney sauces! These appetizers were a must-order to kickstart the meal. Menu highlights included the Chicken Vindaloo, Saag Paneer, Chicken Coondapur, Fish Moli, Chicken Biryani, Tandoori Chicken, and Shrimp and Scallop Masala. Our server brought plenty of freshly baked and fluffy Naan for the table. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, putting our bottles of wine and beer in ice buckets and bringing us extra sauces and rice. We will definitely be back, and soon! read more

First time at this restaurant, and probably won't be the last! We tried the Thai side of the menu this time - hubby got the pad thai plus tom yum soup. I got the drunken noodle with chicken. The food was good -- I'm not a huge thai fan b/c I do not like sweetened curries or main dishes, thus I usually stick with noodles. These were very good -- wide noodles, perfectly coated with chicken/basil/onion/pepper stir fry -- about the same as I've had at another local Thai place (Noodi), and portion is decent. Pad thai was also tasty. The soup had a decent broth with a pleasantly spicy, sour taste that I would expect of tom yum, but was not a stand out. Service was okay but felt a bit aloof and uncaring (no smile, no 'Hi how are you" or "welcome" or "thanks for coming") -- maybe b/c there were only 2 waiters to serve the entire restaurant, which was fairlly busy on the Thurs night we visited. Prices are a couple bucks higher than our other neighborhood Indian and Thai, but I had a "Living Social" deal, and hope to get another one so I can try the Indian. Came here for the Sunday buffet and everything was amazing! I've only ever been to one other Indian buffet and have learned they aren't like Chinese buffets, with tons of options where some dishes don't even make sense. Spice had about ten dishes or so to choose from and all of them were delicious. I think my husband had four plates of food! Once you sit, they will bring you some freshly baked naan. We each got two pieces and I thought that wouldn't be enough, but it was actually too much once we hit the buffet. However, it was so good and I felt bad wasting it, so I made sure we ate every bite. I'm not usually a fan of Indian food, but this place changed my mind. My husband and I went here for date night (we had a groupon so we thought why not?) I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews - we were seated right away, our waiter was attentive and we didn't have to wait long for our food. I had the chicken tikka and my husband had the tandoori platter. There are lots of vegatarian options too. We stopped at whole foods to get beer on our way over there. Spice Indian Thai Bistro is one of the best little Indian restaurants that I've been to, in a long time! My fiancé were seated promptly and given water without needing to ask. The waiters were very pleasant and attentive. The ambiance was relaxed and cozy. Perfect for a date night or casual dinner with friends and family. To start, my fiancé ordered the Chicken Coconut Soup. She really enjoyed it! The soup was warm and smooth, with a savory sweet taste. For entrees, she ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and I ordered the Lamb Tikka Masala. Both entrees were perfect! The lamb was very tender and the masala had the right amount of heat and a good blend of spices! The naan was warm, and the jasmine rice was fluffy. So am wondering if I went on a day when they had a substitute cook/chef. I see a lot of 4 stars which makes me wonder. My experience was totally different. I ordered chicken Pad Thai, it was the worst Pad Thai I have ever come across, it was overly seasoned which made it hard to eat, so I sent it back and decide to go with the chicken biriyani, when it came it looked good and promising, but once I dig in it was so bland, I just had 2 spoonful and had to stop. Came here for dinner on Monday during the time of covid. Really want to give this place a better review but lots of small problems with the place. They had a few spots inside for dining and one lone table outside for dining. Unfortunately the man who greeted us (turned out to be the chef) wasn't wearing a mas. The table and chairs were all not cleaned. No hand sanitizer around unless you went into the store. Just not very well prepared for covid or social distancing. Service was fine although the plates and glasses has some smudges and vaguely didn't seem super clean. We had the samosas and chicken pakora for appetizer. Samosas weren't very flavorful but the tamarind chutney was good. The mint chutney was super water and not very flavorful. Chicken pakora was nice and crispy and had decent flavor. Had the chana and chettinad chicken for our appetizers. Also got two orders of bread. 5$ for ONE poori was absurd. And the bottom of the poori has flecks of burnt things on it from unclean frying oil. The chana was like nothing I've had. On its own it was fine...but it wasn't how chana masala should be. The chicken chettinad was actually fantastic and the reason I gave this place three stars instead of 2. You could see all the real spices that were in there (curry leaves, cinnamon sticks, etc) so someone clearly put effort into making this. And it showed. The chicken was a bit dry but the gravy was FANTASTIC. Smelled and tasted like India. Again however, prices for the entrees were very steep. Seemed more like fancy center city dining than the experience we had. Questionable social distancing and cleanliness (Bathroom had soap bottles that were refilled with water?) and most of the food was lackluster with crazy high prices (especially for bread). BUT I think it might be one of those places were there are a few thing the chef really hits out of the park, so maybe you just need to find those if you go. read more

The lovely wife and I have stopped by once for dinner and at least twice for the lunch buffet. It's convenient for us as the wife prefers the Thai side of the menu and I like the Indian. We have been to many many either Thai or Indian restaurants and this one falls in the middle of the pack for us. That's not a bad thing. It's a fine place to dine. The atmosphere and service are fine and all the expected dishes are on the menu. As they are in a small plaza, parking is a breeze. It can get busy on the weekends and their website uses a silly sort of email reservation system. Of course you could also call them directly. There is a Regal theater directly behind them that is really nice. I would recommend a movie and a pre/post meal here. read more

My family and I love this restaurant. By far some of the best Indian food you can find in the area, with everything tasting very authentic and homemade. Both the Thai and Indian options for the entrées all taste very delicious, my favorites being the chicken tikka masala, Thai green curry, and chicken vindaloo. Along with the entrées, the naan and poori taste freshly made from the dough, with the garlic naan being very well seasoned. One thing I really enjoy is the various options of breads and naan available on the menu, including some savory and others sweet. They also have some great Indian and Thai drink options, including hot teas, Thai iced tea, and mango lassi. The owners were extremely nice and had great service, and I am so glad my family and I discovered this restaurant. read more
