With the high ratings of this place, I have to say, I was truly surprised with how underwhelming I found Subculture to be. I ordered the Monte Cubano. The bread was great, but other than that, there wasn't a whole lot of flavor or filling for that matter. And for a "warm" sandwich, the innards were rather cold. When I asked my friend how hers was, the response was "fine, it was a sandwich", which pretty much summed up my feelings. She got the Yaya Plus. For a place that specializes in sandwiches, this shouldn't be the feeling. I wouldn't not eat here again, but I wouldn't go out of my way. This place is my new favorite shop we have gotten take out from here twice in the last 3 days. The Italian and the Brooklyn are awesome. Edit: we have a serious problem we have now been here 6 times in 2 or 3 weeks. Now we have tried Brooklyn Italian deli Fiat Abilene Chipotle turkey Cubano I grew up on the east coast and have been complaining about the subs in Denver for years. Now that I have found subculture I can no longer talk smack on denver subs. These are the best subs out here for very reasonable price. Everything we have tried from here has been great, our order going forwards will be the Brooklyn and the Fiat which are both absolutely mind blowing. The fiat and the Italian deli are very similar but I think the fiat has a slight edge due to the mayo. Cannot recommend this place enough. Excellent food and service! read more

Denver is full of sandwich shops, both locally-owned and chains. I've tried many of them. Surprisingly, given the heated competition, the quality of sandwiches offered is quite variable. SubCulture is definitely near the top of the list. They offer a huge variety of choices including 37 hot sandwiches, 10 cold sandwiches, 13 vegetarian or vegan, seven salads, and three soups. Bread may be gluten free. There is a full bar. They also have half a dozen breakfast sandwiches on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The space is comfortable in a funky, eclectic way if you want to eat in, with a mix of small and large tables and an expansive outdoor patio. The building was originally a livery stable dating to the 1880s and has its own charm. The ordering area is straightforward and is nicely divided from the seating. The staff brings out each order (and quietly confirms the contents with you) instead of screaming out names from behind the counter. I thought this was a particularly nice touch. My to-go order was prepared quickly and I was in and out in ten minutes. I had the Calle Ocho with ham, turkey, bacon, and swiss plus pickle, grilled onion, mustard, and garlic mojo (their version of an olive oil sauce). Sandwiches come in 7" and 12" lengths. I ordered the small size and found half of it sufficient for my lunch. The sandwich was very flavorful and had a generous portion of high-quality ingredients. The baguette was lightly toasted and had a nice crunch. Although I arrived just after 11:00 a.m., bicycle messengers were already buzzing in and out of the shop with deliveries. There is an extensive catering menu including plain subs, bag lunches, and full deli trays. Parking in this part of Capitol Hill is just plain awful. SubCulture shares a miniature parking lot with the adjacent Pablo's Coffee. There are six tiny spaces squeezed between the patios for each business. Trying to maneuver out when a large truck decides to park next to you is nearly impossible. I recommend walking, trying a bicycle or scooter, a car service, or the bicycle delivery option. read more

I've now eaten at SubCulture three times since Covid-19 rolled in and I'm so glad I discovered this little neighborhood shop. I find myself wanting a sub more often now that I know they're this nearby and this good. The menu is massive with lots of interesting combinations so there's guaranteed to be something for everyone. I've tried the Roma, Fiat, and Calle Ocho. All were served on white french bread that had a bouncy interior and crusty-but-not-too-crusty exterior. Their ingredients are fresh and real, and you can tell. The bread-to-filling ratio is just right. I also love that their size options are 7" and 12" rather than 6". That inch makes all the difference. Remember people, we're talking about sandwiches. Anyway, this place is delicious. Give it a try. read more

Consider putting an order in advance for a tight lunch turnaround since walking in puts you behind a deluge of online and group orders but the staff are fast and dependable nonetheless. We will get around to trying new things, eventually. First of all, they have so many sub options, it is almost overwhelming! They have something for everyone, whether you are vegetarian, gluten-free, or even vegan. Subs are available in two sizes, and there are cold and hot subs. My husband's favorite is the Meltdown, which he gets on gluten-free bread with provolone, mozarella, chipotle sauce, cream cheese, tomato, and grilled onion. I've gotten the Bangkok with tempeh twice. There is something special about the Bangkok. I love asian-inspired flavors in general, but this is THE sub. The bangkok is tempeh with sweet chili sauce, pickle, romaine, carrot and mayo. I get it on the wheat bread and absolutely love it! This particular location is on a street corner with a huge patio, perfect for enjoying the weather when the days are nice. It was unfortunately drizzly when we visited, so we stayed inside, which ended up being a good and cozy choice. The board with the subs has so much variety that it's overwhelming. I chose a soup and sandwich combo, placed my order, and picked a playing card. If you pick a Joker, your sandwich is free! Joke was on me, though, as I got the 5 of Clubs. After sitting down, I then noticed that there are daily specials, and the special of the day looked a little more appealing than what I had ordered. Like I said, the board was overwhelming. My broccoli cheese soup was good and my sub was good as well. I just wish they had more condiments out on the tables than Sriracha. Overall, this place was a-ok for a sandwich. SubCulture is simply amazing. The first couple of times I went here, I always got a Slow Roasted Colorado Beef option. I have had the Bacon & Blue, Green Chili & Cream Cheese, and the standard Beef and Cheese. All are deliciously moist (I hope no is triggered by the word moist.) The Duke is a solid Roast Beef and Horsee Sauce option. The tuna is consistent and superior to any chain. The Meltdown is an amazing vegetarian option for vegetarians AND cheesivores* (I am trademarking that, remind me to mail it to myself.) I am very curious about their tempeh options too. I believe the tempeh is made in-house. I'll have to check it out and report back. One last tip, the To-Go Drinks are necessary! Especially if you live nearby and are picking up. I always go for the Bourbon Lemonade. A perfect drink for the walk back home, and you get to keep the Mason Jar! Win-Win for me and my stark glass-less cupboards. read more

I got to try three different sandwiches and they were all amazing, and the amount of sandwiches they have on the menu is impressive, including a variety of pulled pork sandwiches . The baguettes are fresh af, and even at the close of business when we were there, the bread was perfectly soft and delicious. Over a decade ago, when I first moved to Denver, I lived about a block from where subculture is now, prior to it being subculture. If I recall correctly, when I first moved in to the neighborhood, it was some kind of pizza spot that was just closing up/going out of business. I believe after that it was a seafood fast casual place that didn't last long at all. I remember the joke in the neighborhood was that this location was cursed/no restaurant that opened in that spot was capable of staying in business. So, when Subculture moved in, I remember me and my neighbors not expecting it to last long. Clearly, due to the fact the food speaks for itself, it's likely here to stay for a while. The bread and ingredients are always fresh and delicious. My favorite is their Italian (their vinaigrette is delicious and they're not too heavy handed with it), but you truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I was a vegetarian when subculture initially opened and I remember being very appreciative of the fact they have a very diverse and interesting vegetarian menu as well. I got the roast veggie parm (regular/large), and it was delicious. The bread was soft and crispy but didn't get mushy. The marinara sauce was tangy but not overly sweet. The veggies were a mixture of summer yellow squash and cauliflower. My friend got the chicken parm (small). His small had as much filling as my large did (chicken vs. veggies obviously but the portion size was different). Apart from that discrepancy, the sandwich was on point. Stopped in today at lunch to order a 7-inch sub with a buddy. We got the Mile High Turkey and the Chipotle Turkey and split them. As my friend stated, "It all starts with the bread." The whole wheat bread on both sandwiches was crunchy on the outside but not at all hard. The amount of sauce on the sandwiches was generous, yet didn't make the bread soggy. I had meat and fixings in every bite. If you like a spicy chipotle you might be disappointed, but as I like it more mild it was great. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. We visited the Denver Art Museum and then was going to tour the Molly Brown house. We decided to stop into SubCulture to grab some lunch while we waited for our tour appointment. No prior knowledge or review research, it was just convenient. We had a pretty good breakfast (at Syrup, see my review), so we were not famished. My daughter decided she wanted the Homestyle, pretty much a BLTA, so we ordered the large and had them cut it into 3 pieces. We also ordered sides of coleslaw and pickles. The gentleman who took our order (owner?) was very friendly and talkative. They have large playing cards that they spread out and you pick one. If you get a Joker, you get a free sandwich. Otherwise, the card is your order number. Clever and fun. We got a 6, so no freebie. Sandwich was so awesome. Hard to believe a simple sandwich could be so good. The roll was fresh and that is what probably made the sandwich! Coleslaw was great and I am a coleslaw connoisseur. Pickles were very good as well. I hope that the guy who took our order had a great time in SoCal the following week. Since we live in SoCal, we spoke about where he was going and it was near where we lived. When it comes to lunch time, there is nothing that beats a well put together sammy. I don't care what kind of bread you stuff your ingredients in, I don't discriminate against any meat + veggie + carb combo! Subculture stood out because it was conveniently located in Capital Hill where I am usually found. The sodas are Boylans brand which is a nice touch. The inside is cozy and inviting. The subs are toasted which I also fancy. I took my order to go and they were quick-wit-it!
