Really great sandwich shop. We had the Louie, chicken cutlet, and tiramisu. They were all top notch in flavor, ingredients, and balance of ingredients. Local gem, absolutely love Lou's! It is an excellent spot for Italian food, especially sandwiches. Always hits the spot. I've tried a few sandwiches from here, and they are all great. The chicken and meatball parms are my favorite. The sauce was delicious, bread was light yet crisp, and was filling. The mozzarella sticks here are also incredible. It's the breading where you know it's an elite mozz stick as soon as you see it. As a Jersey native, I was excited to try this place. The menu reminded me of classic Italian spots back home. The meal didn't disappoint either, though I suspect some of the best dishes are the ones I couldn't try due to dietary restrictions (I don't eat pork, so the Italian sub was out). We shared mozzarella sticks, which were perfect. I also got the chopped salad, which was good but would have been better with some Gorgonzola. At least, that's how my favorite spot back home made it, so it almost hit the nostalgia itch but not quite. I got the eggplant parm sandwich. The bread was fresh and toasty, the eggplant was cooked just right, and the sauce was warm and tangy. I do think the proportion of ricotta was a little overwhelming, but that's me. Lou's is a bit out of my way and I hate the parking situation, so I had not visited in quite some time. However, it was an off hour and I had a yen for a good sandwich, so I made the trip. I turned right on 33rd Avenue--just before getting to the restaurant--and was easily able to find parking. There's also a well-defined crosswalk on Downing at that point, so I was able to cross to Lou's side of the street without difficulty. Lou's also does catering and box lunches. I had ordered on the Web site. A friendly staffer handed me my well-packaged bag of goodies. I ordered the Louie, an Italian sandwich with salami, capicola, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo, olive oil, and red wine vinegar plus a pasta salad. Both items were very fresh and absolutely delicious. The roll was authentic and toothsome. The half sandwich I ordered was reasonably priced, generous, and filled me up. We ordered catering for the office today and I have to say, this is some GOD TIER FOOD. The sandwiches are stuffed to the brim and have the perfect amount of bread to filling ratio. I tried the Italian and the eggplant and the eggplant was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. Also had the arancini balls with marinara and just delicious. Went here during lunch with some coworkers after hearing how great this place is! I got a half porchetta sandwich, side of Roman artichokes, two cannolis and an Aura Bora seltzer drink (how in the heck was this $4??). The sandwich was delicious!! It came with an au jus sauce on the side, and the bread was flavorful and super fresh. The artichokes were delicious too -- I'm Italian and remember eating similar artichokes my Italian grandmother used to prepare. Though, I think the price I paid for the artichokes were quite steep. The prices here are high and definitely not a weekly lunch spot, but want to come back and try their other sandwiches for sure. My coworker got the chicken parm and was raving about it! They also have a killer HH menu id like to come back and try. 2 years later, it's time for an updated review! My friend and I walked to Lou's from our dance studio for lunch, and it's still one of the best sandwich shops in town. There are so many options, including groceries in their refrigerated sections. I ended up ordering a Muffeletta because I looove olives and it was recommended by one of the staff members there. The half portion was perfect. Apparently they do quarter portions as well. Definitely want to try some of their plates in the future. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. You can pair your sandwich with one of the beverages in their labeled fridges. Plenty of street parking in the area. Excited to come back and support Lou's again! read more

The fried ravioli were really tasty and not overly bready. The marinara bead good and did not have an over powering spice that many have. The Prosciutto Mio (1/2 size) had a generous amount of meat and cheese. Prosciutto was fresh and we ordered some to go! The bread was crusty and delicious. Style over substance is the conclusion drawn from my first visit to Lou's. The presentation at this Italian deli is *just so.* From the pastry offerings and sauces for sale, to the little fridge offering meals to heat up at home, everything you would expect to see at your classic Italian deli is on offer but with a subtle upscale presentation. I could see that care had been put into even the spacing between items on the self and in the cold case. Nice. I asked a couple questions of the cashier, "How long is a half sandwich?" and got mumbled replies as did my lunch companion. The same worker seemed annoyed and put upon when he had to distribute finished sandwiches to customers. At the delis I'm used to they just holler your name until you come grab your sandwich but maybe the mumbler wasn't up to the task. I got the Louie because I figure if you put the name of your restaurant on a menu item it better be one of the best offerings available. Well I hope that isn't the case at Lou's. This sandwich wasn't inedible by any means but it was nothing special. Everything tasted fresh but the same care in the branding and styling of the restaurant is missing here. A good sandwich is defined by the quality of the ingredients and bread arranged in such a way that maximizes the amount of air in the sandwich. That means bread must be crusty *and* airy. Meats must be substantial *and* yet arranged loosely. Sauce should be plentiful but not sopping out the side. This sandwich was both dense and dry. Bread nothing to write home about. Meats had flavor but no standouts. A real disappointment. Denver is not lacking in Italian deli options. It's possible other offerings here are superior but based on this experience, I'd recommend skipping Lou's and making a visit to Carmine Lonardo's in Lakewood, Vinnola's in Wheat Ridge, or Valente's in Westminster, all restaurants that have been in the game for more than 50 years and whose charm is based on that long track record, not branding expertise. read more

Worst sandwiches in Denver??? We walked in during lunch time, second up! Wooo! Yeah, no. It took 45mins to get our lunch. It's a cute joint and has the vibe but there is no way that I would suffer the wait for something I can get slightly better and freaky fast somewhere else. We finally got up to the register and ordered the Italian beef and the severino grande and some mozzarella sticks. First, the moz sticks were blah, you'd need a few drinks to wash the synthetic Sysco flavor down. 0/5. Next up was the serverino grande. Does serverino mean iceberg lettuce? 2/3s of the sandwich is a bag of shredded iceberg lettuce that's been sitting in a hot car. The only thing more wilted than the lettuce was my excitement to try it. There might be a slice of each of the listed deli meat playing hide and seek under the lettuce (?) The Giardiniera was relegated to the fold in the bread and so most of my experience was it dripping down my arm... or were those my tears? -1/5 Next up was more of a crime against sandwiches. An utter disgrace. I unwrapped the saddest looking "Italian beef" I've ever seen. How did they get a hold of my grandma's overcooked Sunday roast beef??? So dry and devoid of flavor.
