We didn't see any mention of it on the signs and so was not expecting a restaurant with a buffet. We looked it over and though it looked pretty good, the $20 price tag seemed a bit much for what they offered. Fortunately, they also offer a full menu which we chose instead. My wife and I both ordered their Country Fried Steak. Though it took a while to get our drinks, the food came out in a timely fashion, and everything was delicious. My wife ordered Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens for her two side dishes. I ordered mashed potatoes w/gravy and green beans for my sides. After tasting her Mac and Cheese, my wife insisted that I taste them too. She was right! They were some of the best we've ever had. Similarly, my mashed potatoes - typically a pretty ordinary dish - were phenomenal. The portions were also a decent size. The only negative aspect about the who meal was that the Country Fried Steak itself was only warm. It was very tasty and tender but just not hot like the other dishes. If it had been, I would have undoubtedly given Virginia Diner five stars. Though we don't have a need to return to Waverly, I can certainly see us driving the hour or so back for another delicious meal at Virginia Diner.

State Route 52 was established in 1928 to connect Suffolk with Prince George County. In 1933, this road became part of the new U.S. 460 from Roanoke to the Chesapeake Bay. The highway was later extended to St. Louis, Missouri, but its western terminus was eventually fixed at Frankfort, Kentucky. To accommodate travelers' needs, entrepreneurs opened gas stations, motels, and cafes along the roadside. Among these was the Virginia Diner, which D'Earcy and Laura Davis established here in 1929 inside a refurbished Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad car. By the way the Fried Green Tomatoes were absolutely delicious, service was excellent and the gift shop was filled with peanut delights! Absolutely a must visit!

We recently decided to "see something new" by taking the slower, less familiar route. Despite having lived in Virginia for over 30 years, we didn't realize that we would be traveling through some of the counties where Virginia's famous peanuts are grown. The first billboards near Waverly caught our attention, but we didn't stop at the first shop that was advertised. We decided that, if there were any other peanut shops, we would stop because Virginia peanuts would make a perfect present for our upcoming visits with some non-Virginia friends and relatives. Thankfully, we found Adam's Peanuts and Country Store soon after. As others have mentioned, Adam's is a true country store, with country smoked hams in crates as you enter, homemade jams and jellies, a dizzying array of peanuts (raw, boiled, salted, chocolate-covered, and more), plus much more. As mentioned, we were there for the peanuts, and ended up buying a whole box full -- about $140 worth to be precise. The quality of the nuts is top-notch, and we appreciated the variety of the products. The prices also weren't too bad though my husband tends to compare these to the giant canisters from Costco! The ambiance of the shop was also country comfortable. My 3-star rating mostly reflects the lack of attention from the elderly shopkeepers. While others on Yelp have characterized them as friendly and helpful, that was not our experience. While we were the only customers upon entering, neither greeted us when we came into the store. My husband asked if they had any samples of the nuts for us to try to help inform our decision on which nuts to buy. They didn't, and they seemed befuddled by the question. Finally, in checking out, I tried to engage them in a conversation about peanut growing in the county, to no avail. March, 2025.

When turning the corner to get to Porky's, you'll see some type of old school farming machine, a scarecrow, and the Porky's sign in front of the home that's been turned into Porky's. The inside is small and rustic with antiques on the shelving across from the counter. There are 5 bar stools to sit on at the counter. 2 picnic tables are out front if you need if you'd prefer to eat and enjoy the view. Porky's also sells Brad's Bee Town local honey. The day I went Porky's was sold out of beef brisket (which is what I was wanting to try). I decided to go with the pulled pork sandwich and a hot dog with fries. The owner asked from the kitchen if I wanted coleslaw on the sandwich twice while I was talking with the other employee at the counter. I said no twice. When I received my sandwich, there was the coleslaw on it. I didn't fret about it since I know that with the bbq culture in this region, it is normal have coleslaw on your pulled pork sandwich. I'm from Indiana and I was not used to that practice when I first moved to Virginia, but I've learned to just remind folks not to put it on my sandwich. I just told the owner, I'd scrape the coleslaw off with the fork. No problem, no need to waste food. The pulled pork sandwich was good with the addition of one of the sauces they provide. The hot dog was blah. I was assuming they would serve a larger hot dog, but it was your average sized dog. The fries came out just crispy and plain. Not a drop of salt on the fries. I'm not counting this place out at all. The service is great. If I'm driving through Capron, Va again, I'll stop and try some of the beef brisket and the babyback ribs.

Usually, when I am starving, almost anything will taste good. It was Saturday and I had been…read moredriving all day for work. Both areas I worked in were rural and I couldn't find a place to eat to save my life. It didn't help that there was no cell service for HOURS. Finally, after a near-death heatstroke in one of my insured's homes, and a massive migraine triggered by the heat, I was able to find a BBQ joint. Well, BBQ just happens to be the way to this woman's heart, but this place nearly made me change my mind. The building is situated on the corner of the main highway (58) and a side street. It's a small, shanty structure and I was hoping it might be this town's best-kept secret, but NO. Upon entry, the first thing I noticed is that it was the inside was not updated. No big deal though. Often, you find gems in the most unexpected places. No one was behind the counter. I looked around for a few seconds and a woman about my age trudged behind the register without much enthusiasm or even a simple greeting. I asked a few questions about the barbecue, whether it was vinegar-based or a red sauce. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, but I was curious in case I would need to request some extra toppings to doctor it up. The woman in the kitchen poked her head through an opening and showed me what they use. She was friendly enough. I ordered a sandwich only and asked for the coleslaw on the side. That was my saving grace, ordering it on the side. If the coleslaw had gone on an already so-so sandwich, I'm not sure I could have stomached it. The coleslaw lacked flavor and didn't have a touch of sweetness to it. I realize that coleslaw isn't supposed to be sweet, but coleslaw almost always calls for a bit of sweetener. I passed on the coleslaw and tossed it after one bite. Moving forward to the sandwich. I carefully unwrapped the paper to find an ordinary hamburger bun (not fresh tasting) with the barbecue inside. The barbecue was nothing out of the ordinary; however, the bun ruined it. I realized I should have just ordered a barbecue without a bun. The last thing that was amiss was the fragrant aroma of smoked pork or the savory smell of the sauces wafting through the air. That's a major faux pas for a barbecue restaurant. The experience was underwhelming. It didn't appear that anyone took pride in the restaurant or the food. Perhaps it is just a form of income for them and they have become bored with it. I don't know, but I do know that I won't be going back.

We didn't buy any meats but looked over what was being offered and seemed fair priced compared to the chain places. My guess is that these would have been way better tasting though. Maybe next time. We just didn't need anything today. Now I will say this besides some nice looking ribeyes, this is clearly the place to go for exotic meats. Frog legs, bison, and alligator just to name a few. We did buy a few sandwich's and our review is based on that. The wifey got herself a roast beef sandwich and I got a ham and cheese. Both were packed with meat. Very filling. Now don't get me wrong you'll pay for these sandwich's but with the meat they stack on you won't be mad. We both like our sandwich's and remember what I said about being full of meat - my wifey brought 1/2 of hers home. As for me - I finished mine but won't be eating an early dinner :). The young lady who made our sandwiches took care of us and the other customers by herself and I think she did real well. The place offers no inside eating but a couple tables outside near the front door that are covered and a couple picnic benches next to the building, uncovered. Today with the sun and heat - covered was our choice. So again after years of passing this place - I'm glad we stopped. Decent sandwiches. I'm sure we will stop in again.
