This place is a yo-yo. Sometimes it's great however more times that not it's frustrating. Tonight was a frustrating night. There were several empty tables yet we were told the only seating was at the high top table. We sat for several minutes with our menus closed ready to order. Never received any water or a single glance our way from any staff. The food is good as long as you don't request any changes. The kitchen can't handle any changes so don't ask. The service depends on the ladies working. Tonight - not great. We walked out. Headed for EastEnd GastroPub. They are more consistent. read more

Well, at least it looks cool. The hooks on the booths and in the bathrooms are fun, and the decor looks good. Interesting lights and art. The service was odd-- everyone was super friendly and welcoming, yet they would disappear for long periods of time. We had to ask for more water a few times, had to ask for the check, had to ask for someone to come by when there was a problem with the order... at least you know they won't be bothering you the whole time! The food took a long time to come out, but after trying it, it should have taken even longer: the rice in my poke bowl was crunchier than I generally like it. Two others at my table tried it and agreed: that rice wasn't cooked enough. When we eventually got someone to come by, I asked for a side of rice-- there was nothing wrong with the rest of the dish. The meal continued and we all finished before the rice came. In fact, the rice never came. To their credit, Suda comped the poke bowl, which seemed like the right thing to do. Overall, they seem like nice people but how do I put it? They're not exactly in the running for any awards anytime soon. read more

I love suda! I love coming here for happy hour, lunch, or dinner, but I never came for breakfast until today. The creme brûlée French toast was bomb! The Bloody Mary was good! Huevos divorceros we're just okay. The carne asada was not that great. Wings were sub par. No complaints, but wasn't the greatest breakfast spot. Service was pretty good, given that it was Father's Day. We got seated right away, but we're told we had to be out within the hour lol understandable since it was a holiday & they had reservations lined up. Love the decor of this place and the nice open, airy feeling it has. We found this place via Yelp and came in to have some dinner. Lots of things on the menu looked good but I ended up having the fish tacos (mahi mahi was the fish of the evening) and hubby got the steak tacos. Both were rather good and decent sized portions. We did get an appitizer of the sweet potato fries with garlic aioli which were fabulous, nice and crispy and hot the aioli was fabulous but we never could get our servers attention to ask for more when we ran out so we finished the rest without since we didn't want them getting cold. Good thing we did cause she didn't come back until she brought our order of tacos. The tacos were a little on the pricy side $13 for 3 fish tacos with no side. We kinda blew it by ordering the dessert, since up to then things were OK. I ordered the cheesecake, my favorite, which they said was made here but it was hands down the worst I have had. It just didn't have a good flavor at all, the crust was soggy and the consistency was off. I didn't want to waste it but it wasn't good enough to take home and hubby forced the rest of it down LOL I mean at $7.00 I guess I should have said something but I let it go and chalked it up to the fact I shouldn't have ordered it in the first place, so it was my fault. The servers were friendly but very absent minded and forgot things we asked for on several occasions. Luckily they had a guy coming around to refill waters cause without him I am sure we would have been trying to get someones attention to do that but he was on the ball and we appreciated him! They weren't too busy on the Monday evening we were there but the place had a nice vibe to it. I was really disappointed with the service and lack or remembering a simple request like a dessert menu, hot water, lemon for my water etc. which we had to ask twice for and some things we just let it go since the moment passed and we figured it wasn't worth asking for again. I had high hopes for this restaurant. I love what they have done with it. The decor is really nice, including living walls (plants growing in side art panels). The menu was promising too. Wide selection of food, beer and wine, plus a good selection of mixed drinks and top shelve liquor. We arrived around 1:30 pm on a nice Saturday. Restaurant was about half full. Got seated quickly. It went south from there. Took a long time to get water and acknowledgement that we were there. By the time the server arrived, we knew what we wanted and ordered drinks and food at the same time. The drinks took at least 10 minutes to arrive, and I was given the wrong beer. The server took it back, and returned in 5 minutes with the proper beer. Our food arrived shortly after that. My burger arrived first. A few minutes later, my wife's poke dish arrived. It was not a poke bowl. More like tuna with rice, seaweed and cucumber. No Asian flare at all. The burger was decent. Good sweet potato fries. No follow up from the server. No water refills. No one asked if we needed another drink, even though we were both dry. We got up to ask for more water and another cocktail. We received warm tap water with no ice. Someone obviously put some money into this place. Doesn't look like they hired a front manger, or if they did, they need to find a new one. read more

It was a cold and rainy night when we came for dinner with friends. Jade, our guide through dinner, welcomed us as if we were family. We started with the ahi poke, house salads, and the burrata cheese. Wonderful. Main courses included the Arctic char special with butternut squash, risotto and pomegranate seeds, fish tacos and Cioppino. Delightful. Pared with a nice Albariño it was a wonderful meal. The Arctic char special was fabulous. The only thing I would change would be changing out tortilla chips with the poke to wonton. Tortilla chips give the dish an odd flavoring. Hence the 4 stars...would have been 4.5 if that were possible. Many thanks to Jade who's attentive and welcoming service made the meal with friends a delight. I wish the restaurant businesses in Santa Cruz had more people like her. We will be back for not only the regular dishes but the special, specials! read more

I really really want to like this place. The pedigree of the owners is great. The decor is really nice. A great spot with good parking in a part of town that can use more love. Great bar, fun drinks, good beers on tap. I want them to succeed and will try them again hoping for better. But they have to work on their mechanics. I came with friends on a Sunday afternoon. Ready to chill. They were pretty busy but definitely had tables open. Since I was still waiting for the rest of my party I knew it would be awhile. But even after we were all there we still waited another 15 minutes. Now I understand that open tables doesn't mean you should be seated. The back up can be with servers or the kitchen. More on that later. Finally the hostess told us we could be seated but we would need to wait at least 10 minutes before ordering anything because the kitchen was backed up. I guessed right! That was fine since we could order libations. I had the Green Mary, and although a friend had had the same drink a few weeks previous and found it lacking spices, I had no such issues. My friends ordered other lovely cocktails from the great menu. Once drinks were served our waiter took our order. I ordered an omelet, friends ordered burgers, scrambles, mac and cheese and tacos. So we hit the broad spectrum. As stated before I was in a really chill mood and happy to wait for food, especially since they are just getting started. But 45 minutes later my patience was beginning to wear thin. Plus, we did order on seperate checks and one order came out a good 10 minutes before the other. They seems staffed ok with wait staff and bar staff so I can only figure the back up was in the kitchen. By this late time in the afternoon the place was getting really empty so I am not sure why the issue. Some food was pretty bland. The mac and cheese for example. The waiter did bring us an amazing selection of hot sauce, including Tabasco, Cholula, Tapatio, Frank's Red Sauce, Sriracha, and Mae Ploy. (I think that was the list). The salsa on my omelet was pretty good, if the contents inside were somewhat lacking. The potatoes were outstanding. I tried to order a beer to go with my brunch but that took forever to come too, but the waiter comped that one. Pretty pricey for what we got. My share of the bill was over $30 for an omelet and one drink (that could be our math problem too though) I will try them again in a few months and hope they work out the kinks. Wow what a huge disappointment.... we have been coming here since they opened and unfortunately they went downhill after a couple years. It got bad in terms of food and service so we stopped coming. About a year ago we came again and they had not only changed the drink and food menu but got a new chef. Things were looking up. We really enjoyed a few of the times we came. Tonight was right back to old crappy Suda. 1. No silverware for 30 minutes. We had gotten our water and ice teas but the table was barren other than that 2. The waitress was training someone who was shadowing her but they would abandon our table for 15-20+ minute stretches. They were NOT busy. It was a Tuesday night. There were plenty of staff. The other staff were running around and some seemed attentive of their guests but the duo that we had were just awful. They just didn't give a crap. Unacceptable 3. Zero water or ice tea refills 4. Food took forever and was mediocre at best 5. My $16 salmon salad was an embarrassment... the fish portion was 2-3 ounces max. I thought it was a joke at first. Overall I'm bitterly disappointed. I thought they improved the food and service and boy was I wrong. Santa Cruz has an unfortunate reputation for terrible food and service and this overpriced place epitomizes this sentiment. We were there for a Mother's Day brunch. We drove from San Mateo to enjoy the food because the menu looked delicious and the reviews looked good. We had originally requested an outdoor table but when we arrived the weather was cold and cloudy. The hostess said there was a table by the door that would be available. The door to the restaurant was open so the table by the door was quite cold and drafty. I noticed that there were several booths along the wall that were empty and asked if we could have one of them. We were told that they were all reserved and that we could not have one. So we were seated at the table near the door. We were there for about an hour and 15 minutes, and one of the booths along the wall stayed completed empty the whole time. One of the other booths was not used for an hour. I found it surprising that the hostess did not seat us at a booth that had remained empty. The waiter was nice and we really enjoyed the food though. Suggestion to management: next time please have hosts please pay attention to customer requests about seating, especially when a table is empty and with nobody coming to sit there. read more

What happened to Sudas? We used to look forward to dinner at Sudas after driving down to Santa Cruz Friday from Sacramento. We knew all the servers. We went to dinner there a few weeks ago and did not recognize any employees. We ordered two appetizers and salads and three entrees. We waited and waited waited and finally two entrees arrived no third. What happened to the appetizers and salad? Kitchen working on them now. The appetizers and third entree arrived 20 minutes after the first two. The suds bowel with chicken came and the chicken was about the quality of fast food rejects tough stringy and slimy. They didn't charge us for several items but what a disappointment. They changed the menu dropped long time favorites and some one swapped out the really excellent burger for a pre made over salted patty another change for the worse, We went to Sunday brunch, limited menu but out of everything, no smoked salmon for smoked salmon Benedict no avocado for avocado toast and try to get a coffee refill . Not sure what is going on with ownership but two major disappointment s coupled with just poor quality food from kitchen and poor service read more

Lunch was good but not great. We split a Suda salad. The veggies were fresh, tasty, and varied, the miso-plum dressing (recommended by our server) good, but there wasn't much to unify the vegetables into more than a big plate full of lettuce and raw julienned vegetables. I asked about the "catch of the day," as I was considering the fish tacos and another dish with a fish option. Well, it turned out that the COTD was salmon for some dishes, and snapper for the fish tacos. Confusing. I ended up ordering a dish with mixed veggies and quinoa, with salmon on top. Like my girlfriend's sweet potato tacos, my dish was tasty, but there wasn't a "stick to your ribs" satisfaction after eating it. No real "Wow" factor. I had their Bavette Steak - grass-fed, roasted fingerling potatoes, herb butter, crispy onions, chimichurri - it was cooked to perfection! For my cocktail I had the firecracker - Corralejo Reposado Tequila, Strawberry Rhubarb Shrub, Ancho Reyes, Cilantro - unique and tasty. The manager Iaesha was amazing! I had not been to Suda since before the pandemic, When they had offered one of the best restaurant week meals I'd had in years. It used to be a favorite, especially the quinoa bowls, which they no longer offer for lunch. That was the first disappointment. The second was that I ordered the fried buffalo chicken sandwich, and it was huge but really terrible. The best thing about the meal was the fries. The worst was that our waiter was wearing so much scented fabric softener that every time he came near me I had to hold my breath. read more

After revisiting Suda several times after a rough start I feel I have to update my review of this restaurant. First and foremost I have to give the bar a solid 5 stars. Bar is now very efficient and and dare I say masterful in their creative use of quality culinary ingredients, fresh local herbs, exotic fruits and vegetables in their cocktails. We are still barely a quarter of the way into their bar menu and each unique drink holds it's own in this cast of characters. Now onto the food. The Ahi Tuna Tower is a superb blend of seared ahi chunks, avo, ginger, etc. mounded on a plate of crisp wonton chips with a wasabi and teriyaki drizzle. Nicely seasoned and delightful. Good quinoa grub bowl filled with fresh veggies and a good choice of protein and sauces make this a versatile dish to have a dozen different ways. Their club sandwich is great. Try it. I was literally blown away by the level of service my friends and I received this evening at Suda! This place has been sometimes hit or miss over the years in this area even as I have been rooting for this East side gem. I'm so grateful and happy for the future of this establishment with the caliber of staff like the uber professional Mel who took care of our party of ten tonight. As a former restaurant manager, I know that I sometimes notice many details my friends and family might miss such as how skilled a person is at recognizing when a new guest arrives at a table or having masterful knowledge of menu items. Mel navigated our large party with such ease and grace. Thank you Suda for a truly exceptional evening and I hope that you appreciate what a treasure you have in Mel.
