When I looked up local favorites in St. Louis, gooey butter cake was the number one recommended dish. And when I looked up good places to have it, Little O's was recommended by multiple websites. I tried the gooey butter cake for the first time here and when my mom asked me how it was, I really couldn't describe it to her (I generally break tastes down relatively easily)-gooey butter cake really has a unique taste to it. And a slice of this cake is pretty cheap (it cost me about 3 bucks if I remember correctly). So I would definitely recommend trying this place out. The next time, I'm gonna try their special gooey cake (it has raspberries and chocolate chips inside it). read more

Wow, my family really loves this place! Yelp pointed us to this store one afternoon while we were picking up the kid from daycare. It was beautiful out, and it just felt like an ice cream day. I busted out my trusty Yelp app, and we were set to go. And boy did Yelp get this one right! What a great ice cream shop! I've been here twice and gorged on their gigantic one-size-fits-all shakes, and I feel no regrets. If I wanted to eat healthy, I wouldn't come to a store that pimps delicious sugary treats. The boyfriend and I are here visiting for his job and we literally ran in here a few weeks ago during one of the famous Missouri down pours. We sat and talked with the staff for quite sometime. This place is totes adorbs! I have to admit I'm writing this review because of the amazing service! But it was delicious as well. The "soda jerk" behind the counter was so great with everyone. So polite and did a great job answering to a few people who asked about the history to the shop. I was so impressed! We almost bought a gooey butter cake after hearing the guy tell the story. He really does his job so well. It is refreshing to see such great service. The hubs had butter pecan and I had the Mackinac Island fudge- very creamy and delish. Portions are enormous! So if you are a dainty one, choose a single cup fer shur! The inside of the shop is small, but very cool! Lots of decor that reminds you of a long time ago. They even still sell phosphates and malts! This is a great little place to go on Main Street after a stroll, a bike ride or just because! You must try the gooey butter cake - or grab one for an event or after dinner dessert. How wonderful is it that Little O's Soda Shop is my 100th review? This was my first stop in Little O's, but certainly not my last. I was a bit irritated at the lady in front of us in line, as she seemed to ask questions about every menu item, including who on the staff made "X" the best. Really, as tiring as her questions were, they gave me time to consider and reconsider the options, eventually allowing me just enough time to spot the blackberry soda. I was truly leaning toward an old fashioned root beer right up until blackberry jumped out at me! First off, these sodas are NOT a gulp and go option! If you are like me and just stopping in to try a soda just to say you tried it, plan to sit a while. The soda's come out in gigantic mugs, more than enough to share between two people if you are so inclined. If you are looking for something quick, I recommend getting the soda in a to go cup. read more

The malts here are as good as Crown Candy Kitchen, no joke. I was excited to see this as I love a good malt and CCK is hell and gone from my home. On first visit, we got sodas. The husband had a classic cream soda, which tasted just as it should. I asked for orange and marshmallow (not on the menu, but they'll mix up any flavor you ask for if they have the ingredients). This soda blew me away. It tasted like a dreamsicle soda. Our second visit (later that day...yes we loved it so much we went back the same day) was for dessert. So of COURSE, we ordered malts. They ask how much malt you like, which is great. I got a strawberry/marshmallow malt which was outstanding. The husband had a caramel one....SO good. Decadent. Definitely get water to drink with your malt so the sweetness doesn't overpower! I like the counter seating, and although we didn't try the gooey butter, it looked fantastic and other patrons there while we visited seemed very pleased with it. Super cute old time soda fountain - and I mean OLD! Their soda machine is actually from the 1920s and they make everything from scratch. They also sell old time candies, which they don't make. One of their claim to fames is gooey butter cake, and it looked good! They had chocolate chunk, peanut butter and blueberry when I was there. I resisted.. though barely. There are several stools at the fountain to sit at and 3 small tables. It's not big, and it was very busy when I was there due to the ice carving festival, but they went pretty fast and were literally running around to serve everyone. We managed to find seats at the counter and I ordered a root beer float, while Cherie ordered a gooey butter milkshake. Both were huge and satisfying! My root beer was made on the fountain machine too, and the ice cream was super vanilla-y and delicious at about $4 total. I sloshed my way out of there. They serve soup here, as well as other ice cream desserts and many flavors of sodas, phosphates, etc. I am pretty sure it's a family owned business as I noticed that some of the people working were related. It's a great addition to Main Street and I definitely will be by for more sweet treats the next time I'm in the area! read more

Had to give this place a thumb up. Just happened across it this past weekend as the fam strolled along main street. Actually happened across some friends that were indulging at this soda shop. We walked in music blaring from a small juke box. Old soda memorabilia on the walls and shelves. Once I saw they make their own gooey butter cake here I was immediately interested. I believe all they sell are hand made soda's, ice cream and sundaes. Their big O sundae is made of their gooey butter cake. Family run so the owner and his daughter were working behind the counter. This is an old fashioned soda shop in St. Charles. Or at least it tries to brand itself as such. It was really hyped up by a lot of people I know, so I went to check it out. It really wasn't too bad but it was a bit of a letdown considering the hype it was given. It has pretty mediocre soda, with what basically tastes like snow cone syrup for its soda flavors. It's pretty inexpensive, but you really get what you pay for. The place also seems to want to brand itself as old fashioned, but the only thing old about the place is the building it's located in. None of the decor is antique, although they were going for that look. It's really obvious that it's new, and a faux antique. Overall, it's not terrible, but it certainly isn't as good as it's hyped up to be. read more

The idea sounds charming, and we planned to go after a show for my daughter's birthday. I called the day before and a man named Ian told me they would be open until 9 p.m... Let's start with the good....unbelievable desserts. If you just walk in and order one to go you will be happy. The problems..... 1) Nobody greets or acknowledges customers as they walk in. In fact after about 5 minutes of no service I finally ask a customer who already has food if it was seat yourself or order at the bar first. 2) There are only 4 or 5 meat options on the menu. How do you run out? We are only talking toppings of lettuce, pickles, tomato, and onion......again they are out of one of them. If you are not going to stock the ingredients to make these items, remove them from the menu. 3) If you are out of a ingredient tell me at the time of placing the order. I should not be seated and already paid for my meal and then you tell me you are out of the meat for my sandwich. No offer to refund... I had to suggest a different sandwich to replace. 4) You bring out the sandwich plate.....which I had to wait for but didn't serve my drink until after I was nearly finished with my entire meal. Then I had to remind you I had order a dessert to even get it served. Just to be clear....there was some other customers but we are not talking about any kind of "line our the door" situation that might have made this more understandable. In fact as I ate my meal, more than once BOTH workers were in the back and therefore not available as folks walked in. I suggest if they want to keep customer they move to an online operation of just selling their gooey butter cakes because the customer service will ensure I do not return. read more

Just drove here to get dessert for my Fiancé's birthday and the place is completely dark and deserted despite the fact that they should be open for another 2 hours. Read some previous reviews and seems this happen a lot and some days they just don't open at all with no warning... Shame.. This is how business is lost. Very disappointed. This place is incredible! I'm really not much of a gooey butter cake fan - well, I thought I wasn't - but now I've found the real thing and I'm in love! I turned it into a sundae with two scoops of ice cream and hot fudge on top. My girlfriend got the gooey butter cake milkshake and it was pretty yummy, but I definitely proffered my sundae. I should also note that because I'm a huge chocolate fan, I tried the gooey butter brownie. While it was delicious, I would still pick the original every time! One of my friends took me to this shop to introduce a float for me, and I was very exited because I knew such a fun and nice drink there. On the wall, there was a menu where they had a lot of soda and many flavors of ice cream, and we could choose soda and ice cream from them. This style of soda shop may be popular in America, but we have no one like this in Japan. I ordered a float with Red Cream and Vanilla ice cream. Red Cream was extremely sweet, but vanilla ice cream made it mild and delicious. There are two sizes of cup for a float, and I got a bigger one, but it was large enough for me. I was not good at English, but Staff were very helpful, and they spoke slowly and kindly for me. Thanks to them I enjoyed the float very much. On the other day, I went there again and ordered a float with Root beer and vanilla ice cream. That was also delicious. I would like to go there every weekend. read more
