Sugarcane is consistently delicious, never a question about the quality or taste! We eat here or order takeout at least once to twice per month, if not more. The owner Kevin is friendly, the bartender makes the best drinks (go for a mai tai or lychee martini), and the servers David and Nick are super attentive and quick. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! For appetizers, I suggest the chicken lettuce wraps, fresh rolls, scallion pancakes, beef teriyaki, and shumai. The egg drop soup, tomato egg drop soup, wonton soup and hot and sour soup are also delicious. For entrees, you can't go wrong with the make your own dish, where you choose your protein, vegetables and sauce. I also recommend the Crispy Aromatic Beef, Triple Delight, General Gao's Chicken, fried rice, lo mein, and I could keep listing. This is a great restaurant in downtown Peabody -- the decor, service, and quality are refined but still casual. Each time I visit my family, we dine here at least once, as they've become regulars. Staff are friendly, service is prompt, ingredients are fresh and delicious. As a vegetarian, I find that they have enough variety in the menu to give me options. I've enjoyed the vermicelli bowl with vegetables and fried tofu as well as the mixed Chinese vegetables. The vermicelli bowl was fresh, with delicate flavors that complemented each other very well. The tofu was freshly fried, light, with the golden exterior perfectly crunchy without being overdone, probably the best I've ever had. The ingredients in the mixed veggies were all fresh and not overcooked. The garlic sauce was a perfect balance with the flavors of the vegetables and did not overpower the dish. My dad is a huge fan of their pho. Great food, atmosphere, and service -- at extremely reasonable prices. I always look forward to dinners here. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go! The staff is amazing and everyone who works there is personable! Kevin the owner is an amazing person who will conversation with you and make sure you are having a great time. The food is hands down some of the best food I have had in the north shore area. Beef Pho-YUM! YUM! Beef Luc Lac-YUM! Pineapple Fried Rice-YUM! You really should know how to use chop sticks to eat the Pho, and the portion is huge for a large. They also give you a small cup with 2 sauces in it to eat the Pho with, a hot chili sauce and a sweet tamarind sauce-they are perfectly balanced to have with the Pho. For those of you who don't know what Pho is, its a Vietnamese soup with rice noodles, scallions, bean sprouts, fresh cilantro and meat (I prefer beef but they also offer chicken, a seafood and a house special) and its all steeped in a wonderfully flavorful broth. I just ordered from this restaurant for delivery - I called because the lo mein had a weird smell and I was missing an item - and I was charged additional for a substitution!! All they offered was a free egg roll - the missing item - next time!! How about a credit for the bad lo mein!! Need to change Chinese restaurants!! This one is bad!! Please bring back the duck. The Peking duck was the best, but removed from menu with no explanation or info if it is coming back. Other Chinese restaurants in or around Boston have awful slimy and saucy duck. Sugar Cane's was crispy, moist, and let the duck flavor shine. Nothing like it anywhere nearby unless you want to go to NYC or DC. After coming here for 7 years, and having a 5 star experience every time, I have to downgrade Sugar Cane to a 2 star. Their other dishes like beef pho and ginger scallion lobster are still very good, but they lost one of the best menu items, and lost a regular customer as a result. read more

I've become a big fan of Sugar Cane. The atmosphere is very nice and the food is pretty darn tasty. Starting with the atmosphere, the decor is kind of minimalist, very understated in its Asian-ness, meaning you won't find any giant tacky murals or tiki glasses. There's a time and a place for those things and it's at the Kowloon. Anyways, Sugar Cane is always super clean and has really nice bathrooms, too. I wish mine looked like that. The food has been a win every time I've visited. I loved the Vietnamese spicy basil chicken and their Neptune seafood basket with its edible potato bowl. The house special pho was tasty, though I wish they'd give you a side plate with extra basil, peppers, etc. I also tried a ginger lobster special one time and although I'm usually very traditional in how I eat lobster (i.e., boiled and dipped in butter), it was outstanding and beautifully presented. My only complaint was that the portion was a little small for the price. Cocktails also aren't super generous, but damn good. They use Grey Goose and Cointreau to make a cosmopolitan and still only charge $7. The wine pour also isn't that generous, but for a $5 cabernet, I'll take it. I've always found the service to be friendly and of average speed. The dishes don't come out mindblowingly fast, but I've never been left wondering where my food was. A word of caution: If you're going to sit in the bar area, somehow announce yourself upon entry. My partner and I waited about 15-20 minutes one time for service because the one person that happened to see us told us later he had assumed we were there waiting for a takeout order and not dining in. Sweet, sweet, Sugar Cane. The location is really like a beacon for me. I don't think there is anywhere I would rather eat within two square miles. I see it, I eat. The restaurant's innards are clean, comfortable and subtly stylish. The food is fairly cheap. The pineapple fried race is scrumptious. The Vietnamese soups are oh-so-good. In fact, in three visits, I think everything I've ever had here was worthy of praise. They have cheap beer, too. The only bad memory I have of Sugar Cane involves and ex-girlfriend, but I don't have the heart to dock this fine restaurant a star for that. Its an ok place, the owners are very friendly, we like the renovations and the prices are reasonable. The problem is that the food is not very good, I just don't get why they keep putting tomatoes in the pho. Now, I like everything Vietnamese, I get out of my way to try a new pho recipe, but their version is just weird. The bathrooms were clean!!! It doesn't get any better than that. The restaurant was clean, not your typical Pho restaurant where you can draw pictures in the grease on the table. Service was great. All were warm and friendly. Food was excellent. Very well prepared and tasty. Lighting - Not too dark, not too bright (but I was there at 4pm) Spring Rolls - YUM Spicy Beef Salad - YUM YUM House Special Pho- Super YUM The Pho was so big I couldn't finish it! (I finish everything I start!!) The only draw back was that the orders didn't arrive at the same time. There was a two to three minute gap between each dish. I felt awkward tearing into my food while others watched. But I was hungry, and after all it's all about me... Besides this, most excellent. Went for lunch with a couple friends of ours who are slightly less adventurous than my wife and I. My wife had the beef satay pho which she said was good but wasn't raving about it. I had the house special pho which was good but again not amazing the broth could have been stronger and the tripe was very chewy. Our friends had a small pho that was just ok. They also got the pad thai and the kung pao chicken. Again very good but not we have to come back soon good. The place was very bright and clean food was served quickly however good luck getting a drink refill without having to ask. The 1 silver lining was the fried vietnamies spring roll that was amazing. We also had the summer roll which was good but too much vermicelli inside. All in all good food but not amazing. I would come back but I will not put it to the top of my list of places to return to. read more

Passing by this quaint restaurant on numerous occasions and reading the mostly positive reviews here; we had high hopes for Sugar Cane, but sadly, the overall experience was disappointing. We started with the Hot and Sour Soup. In reviewing the menu after the fact, I believe we were given the Vietnamese version as opposed to the Chinese version I ordered. (if you have two versions of Hot and Sour Soup, wouldn't you double check that order?). With that said, the soup was cloyingly sweet with chunks of canned pineapple. Really unappetizing. We couldn't finish it. We told the waiter we did not like it to which he said, "oh, that's too bad. Next time, I will leave out the pineapple." No real apology or offer to take it off the bill despite the fact that we did not eat it. We also had Goi Cuon, the fresh summer rolls, which were very good. For my entree, I had the special spicy lemon grass lobster and my Dining Partner in Crime had the Crispy Shrimp with Walnuts. My lobster was cooked well, but the sauce was completely bereft of "Spicy" or "Lemongrass" flavors. The Crispy Shrimp with walnuts was just plain weird. Over breaded, over cooked, under-seasoned. Kind of a white gloppy mess. In all fairness, I need to go back and try the Pho and see if that changes my perspective as it appears that this is primarily a Vietnamese restaurant first and foremost. We were in the area and was craving for Pho. The staff were nice but the Pho was not. We ordered a large seafood pho which was $9.50 (expensive for pho) walnut shrimp and pad thai. Of the 3 dishes, the walnut shrimp was the best. The pad thai was salty and watery...the weirdest pad thai version I've ever had. The pho was a joke...I don't even know where to begin. I should have read the review from PD. The "chicken" broth was watered down or they may have brothed 1 chicken wing because that was just sad. Honestly, I'm surprised this place has this many stars. We went there last night for take out around 4:30. Ordered over the phone per everyone's suggestions. I have never been more disappointing with Chinese food in my LIFE. We ordered the appetizer combo, wonton soup, sesame chicken, and mixed vegetables. The appetizer combo was good. The chicken fingers were moist. The portion for 10$ isn't worth it though. The wonton soup was good. The broth tasted fresh and the wontons were good - a little on the smaller side, especially since the soup is $3. We got 3 wontons in it. The mixed veggies were too hard. They were not cooked enough and the mix was of mostly bok choy and broccoli. I regret every decision about eating the sesame chicken. The outside coating was not crisp, it was slimy. There was absolutely no flavor. I'm not sure why the reviews are so good. Maybe the Vietnamese is better. I won't be finding out though because I feel so gross from the food last night. read more

We come here occasionally and have always ordered the Chinese fare, which I've always liked. Last night, tried the Chicken Curry from the Vietnamese menu. I actually liked it better than anything on the Chinese menu. Probably will try the Pho next time. Since discovering Sugar cane we've been going on a weekly basis. I am in L-O-V-E with the fresh veggie spring rolls and the seafood pho. Hubs is a big fan of the mango shrimp! It's inexpensive ($30 for 2 beers, 2 dinners and an app) and close to home, and the service is attentive and friendly. The inside is cute, and fit for a nice dinner out with a date, or a random Monday night "i don't fee like cooking let's go out" dinner. read more

The restaurant itself is great -- friendly service (my waiter helped me out with my order, the manager/host guy explained the pho to me, and even the guy filling my water glass asked how the food was:), the mai tai kicked my ass, and the veggie fried rice was the best I have EVER tasted. Wow I'm really surprised how this place has high review ... just wanted to start out that I'm Vietnamese and Chinese and I have learn Vietnamese cooking from my mom whom is a great chef. And I work in a Chinese restaurent for over 12 years so I know a thing or two about the food ... I came in and I was greeted and was seated. ordered hot sake small pho and grilled pork spring rolls .. the small pho was 7 dollars the size was smaller then I thought. You can s we the picture and judge I put a pair of chop sticks next to it so you can have an idea of the size. The reason I ordered small was because if it didn't tasted good I don't have to waste food. their was 3 pieces of meat and little bit noodles mostly veggies normally for pho veggies comes on the side but here it was mixed in the broth. Soup was warm not hot and the flavor was so disappointing it's like they got warm water and add beef cube (artificial flavor ) everything about this bowl of pho was wrong . I was not worth the money . Now the grilled pork spring rolls the meat was dried and cold like it was cooked and left sitting their. It was 6.50 and was not worth the price. Service was good maybe because it's slow but I am very disappointed about this place ... So do yourself a big favor everyone stay away from the pho and the grilled pork spring rolls. Enjoyed a nice meal at Sugar Cane tonight. Started with two mai tais which were strong and good. For apps we got the vegetarian summer rolls and the chicken lettuce wraps. The rolls were cool and refreshing if not a tad bland. The lettuce wraps were great - like P.F. Changs but a bigger portion. Entrees, my husband got the chicken with lemongrass which had a nicely flavored cream sauce that was surprisingly light. I had the vermicelli with chicken which was great. I love vermicelli! With the rice noodles, bean sprouts, cool veggies, mint and crushed peanuts. For $8 I got a huge bowl which I could not finish, as much as I wanted to! Overall, we really liked this place. Nice clean modern decor, friendly service, and spot on food, all for a great price. Two drinks, two apps, two entrees, $40. We definitely plan on returning! read more

I love coming here to eat. Although the menu has Chinese and Vietnamese food, I tend to get the traditional Vietnamese items. The decor of the restaurant is very nice and clean. You would think that the food might be slightly pricier due to the modern decor, but it was reasonable! I always get the same item each time. The pan fried noodles with beef which taste exactly the way my mom makes it! I go there for the comfort of home cooking while being far from home. The vegetables are crisp and fresh. The portions are large so be prepared to take some home. I never have left overs since I cannot stop eating. It is so yummy. When I bring friends there, they also enjoy what they order. We found this place on Yelp when we were looking for a place to get pho near Salem. This place turned out to be a hidden gem. When driving down Main St. in Peabody you don't expect to come across anything special but this place was great. It was warm, cozy and clean. It was almost full on a Saturday at Noon. The decor was modern and inviting as well. Service was very friendly and attentive but not annoying. The large bowls of pho (which are huge) are $8 and well worth it! So I have been a major fan of this place since I was living in good o'l Peabody, but now that I am about 30 miles away its pretty tough to go here now. Luckily 2 weeks ago I had a craving for the sesame tofu and I have to say I am still impressed. If you like your fried tofu crispy then this is the place to try. The staff is kind of quiet, but they also dont look at you crazy when you ask to substitute your chicken for tofu. Prices are pretty typical for chinese. Lunch menu is perfect and the amount is just enough. Plus side they also deliver. Parking they have a nice lot, but I have realized when snow storms arrive, parking is little less in the lot. Definitely reccommend my meat and veggie friends to check out. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant with excellent atmosphere and reasonable prices. I ordered the vegetarian pho and requested fried tofu to be added. The tofu was good, the veggies were good, the noodles were good, but we were not given the side of basil / lime / jalapeño / sprouts (just the hoisin / sriracha) and there was a noteable lack of spices in the broth. This is often a problem with fusion places, or Chinese restaurants that make pho -- they use a generic soup broth and it's my opinion that the spiced broth is the best part. Someone said this was a good middle of the road place for pho, but because of the broth, I'd say that's much too generous a designation. read more

Super dissatisfied with my takeout order today. My shrimp fried rice was exactly that shrimp and fried rice - but not much more. There was no flavor or seasoning except the flavor of the oil from frying the rice. I also ordered a pho and by the time I got home (5 minute drive) the broth was lukewarm if that. I don't expect boiling hot soup in takeaway but I'd expect it to at least stay warm for my short drive home. Was soooo excited to try Sugar Cane after a patient told me how great it was, especially the Sesame Chicken. HUGE disappointment!!!! We got the Pu Pu platter for two along with the highly touted Sesame Chicken, Pan Fried Noodles with beef & Pineapple Curry Rice ALL the food lacked flavor. The beef was not moist or flavorful, the boneless spareribs we're dry, the chicken wings although moist we're not flavorful. The crab rangoon probably was the best thing in the Pu Pu platter but anybody's crab rangoon is tasty and delicious...what isn't good with cream cheese? So sadly my anticipation of deliciousness went out the window I will not be traveling almost 30 minutes to go and get take up when I can go right downtown for better Asian food. If you can't make the trek to Boston to eat at Pho Pasteur on Washington Street, then Sugar Cane is a decent alternative. Huge Bowls of Soup. What more can I say? If you order their Vietnamese soups, you'll be taking half of it home in a plastic take-out container. These are tasty, kitchen-sink bowls filled with rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, and whatever the feature-du-jour is, such as crispy Vietnamese springrolls, lean strips of beef, seafood, etc. Make sure to add a dollop of saracha, the Hoo-Boy! hot chili paste sauce that is always on the tables at Vietnamese restaurants. My dining companion and I ordered a lobster dish, on one visit, that came with the lobster split into pieces and placed artistically on the plate, with a subtle sauce laced across the chunks of lobster meat. It was fresh, not frozen, which you'd expect since we're a seacoast region. The full bar has all the traditional and trendy mixed drinks, as well as Vietnamese and Chinese beers. We opted to try one of the Vietnamese brands, and it was light, crisp, and refreshing. I'm sure that in Vietnam it is not drunk ice-cold, but Sugar Cane chills its brews for American tastes. The decor is tasteful, the restaurant is spacious, and the service is fine. It's a nice "date" restaurant, not really a family place if you have little kids. More of a "Grown-up's night out" place. We went for dinner, I'm sure it's great for lunch as well. NOVEMBER 17, 2011 UPDATE: I just went for lunch a few days ago. You can get a belly-filling pho (noodle-n-stuff soup) for under $10. They even have a smaller bowl for $5-$6 and if you order a couple of spring rolls ($3 each) it makes a full lunch if you're not a big eater. The noodle bowls with your choice of meats/seafood runs around $10 or so and is a good choice too. I got the seafood pho in the smaller size, and one spring roll, a pot of tea (no charge for tea) and it was perfect for a chilly, rainy afternoon. Going for a late lunch at around 2pm, I found service to be perfect. There were maybe 3-4 other tables of diners so it was not crowded but not hauntingly empty either. Sugar Cane in Peabody, MA is a breath of fresh air in a town one might expect the usual hum-drum Asian take-out restaurant. The service was a bit lackadaisical at best and glasses filled the table by the end of the meal as our server felt it unnecessary to clear empty glasses. Nonetheless, the waiter was very polite and accommodating. Asking whether customers want their appetizers with the meal or prior is a touch that, albeit simple, always makes a good impression, and our server did just that. When asked for his recommendation regarding what sauce to put on the "Choose Your Own" stir-fry, he was thoughtful about the ingredients and made an excellent recommendation to my fellow-diner. The food is the gem here. The menu is a refreshing combination of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai styled dishes. Unlike many Asian restaurants, the food is not heavy and terribly greasy. Even fried foods like the pepper fried seafood platter is cooked at the proper temperature, the result of which is a crisp outer crust without extra coating of oil. The crab rangoons are some of the best I've ever had. The dishes are not overly complicated which speaks to the culinary traditions of East Asia. Finally, don't expect the Cheesecake Factory length menu that so many Asian-styled restaurants feature. This is a restaurant that takes pride in their food and will bend backwards to make sure it is done well. Sugar Cane is some distance for me to travel, but I will be stopping in again. read more
