    Fish & Chips special $11.50 (Sept. 2023)
    Jeremy W.

Located on the industrial side (south) of S.W. Marine Drive and Manitoba St., this little cafe, diner, casual dining, catering establishment is a classic. Unpretentious and offering honest, good food. At the helm is a honed, experienced chef who offers customers great value for their hard earned money. Portions are larger than expected and their daily specials are something to look forward to. On this visit, I had the fish & chips (1 pc.) special for $11.50 (add 1pc. fish for $6.95). The fish was the size of my hand, perfectly crispy batter encasing the moist, steamy hot fillet. perfect. Served, as it should, with kennebec style fries and tartar sauce and lemon wedge. As the picture shows, no frills, no bells and whistles - that was unnecessary as the food spoke for itself. While enjoying my lunch, I took in the hand written menu on the blackboard behind the counter...from burgers to spaghetti and meatballs to lamb and chicken souvlaki, their menu is as varied as your cravings of the day. I will definitely return and try more items. (I left with a slice of carrot cake to go!) This little cafe has been around since 2003, and obviously they have been doing something right! Support local small business - they ae the heartbeat of our economy!

From Chuck's fine art collection. On loan to Sugar's

Your host Chuck is the reason (as well as there being no restaurants within half a kilometer) that Sugar's is a success. Good lunch menu with lots of comfort food as well as a Vegetarian menu and a choice of smoothies. There is an empty wall with 3 frames with no pictures. I guess Chuck is waiting for you to add to his collection. If the yellow Jeep Wrangler isn't parked across the street, the place ain't rockin.

3.5*'s This place has been on my list for a while and I was waiting for an opp to pop by. It finally came. Fearing the Arches just up the street, I came here instead on a Saturday afternoon. It was DEAD. Practically nobody in this place. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a seat on the weekend. It's a caterer/diner. Seating is ~20 peeps tops, and I'm guessing that the owner caters mainly to the local businesses and peeps that know about this place and work nearby during the weekdays. I know about it because my parents live in the area and I grew up in this area.. Prices, not bad. Maybe a $1 or $2 more than something comparable on the lower end of pricing. I know my diners. I go to a lot of them. This is one of the more cleaner and updated, in terms of renos, diners. Food is pretty decent for what it was. In house ground patty for the burger. If I had any complaint about it, there was a bit of gristle that was left in the patty. Evidence of house ground. I needed dental floss for that one. Fresh condiments on the burger with a bit of dressing. Fresh cut fries too. Daily specials are available. All in all, pretty decent. MC accepted

Unbeatable Brunch Feast at Jam Cafe on Beatty…read more Our latest tasting session turned brunch into an absolute triumph! Jam Cafe on Beatty features a rustic, bustling, and energetic ambiance filled with vintage accents that set the ideal backdrop for a fun morning out with the team. The service was remarkably cheerful, fast, and efficient, keeping the coffee flowing and taking great care of our table despite the busy room. The food is famously hearty, decadent, and executed to perfection. The French Toast is thick cut, fluffy, and beautifully caramelized, while the Red Velvet Pancake brings a rich, unique sweet twist to the table. The Cinnamon Buns and Cinnamon Swirl options were irresistible additions to our spread, packed with warm spice and comforting flavor. Between the vibrant rustic atmosphere, warm service, and legendary comfort food portions, Jam Cafe delivers a 5 star brunch experience every single time!

And as I soon as I walked in I noticed the portions people were receiving, holy cow! Are we in Texas? I ordered a chai latte and it smelt so good. And tasted even better, best chai I've ever had. It tasted like a cinnamon fall festival in my mouth. Brought me right back to my childhood and all the falls I spent in New England. I also got the huevos rancheros and it was so good. I hardly made a dent in my food though. There was a bit of a wait for the bathrooms. I loved the decor too. Honestly I see the hype for this place, but I believe it's mainly for their HUGE portions. Dont get me wrong the food was delicious! But I don't think waiting in a line is necessary for this place.

Solid reviews on Yelp had us on the way. What a great little spot! There used to be so many diners of this style, it's a shame so many are no longer there for us to enjoy a simpler time. It's 100% diner right down to the mini juke boxes in each booth to the red and chrome bar stools. Even found an old Kellogg's individual cereal box display like one we had in my parents diner in Ontario, that was very cool! The service was spot on with our two servers working in unison to get waters, tea, orders, delivering food, cleaning up like a well oiled team. They even have old fashioned milk shakes and an Hamilton Beach machine to blend them up. WOW, nostalgia. The food came out quickly and was cooked exactly as we asked, and it was plentiful and a solid breakfast for the price. My potatoes were a little greasy, to me, but everything else was perfect. The bacon, three slices, of good quality and perfectly crispy as ordered. We will most certainly return to The Templeton when downtown again. Our hotel close by, not so much, but this little gem, unquestionably!

Upon check in, they estimate the wait time would be 25-30 minutes. We are seated at 10:10am. The most impressive dish is the smoked salmon egg Benedict. We asked to serve the béarnaise sauce by the side. The blueberries pancake is soooooo fluffy. A must try. The hash brown is crispy on top and soft at bottom. We like it so much that we needed to order another one as a side dish. Chicken and waffles are good but not as great as the above three. Meat lovers omelette is normal. The most disappointing dish is the wontons. Traditional wontons have real prawn fillings. This one has a meatball texture which is quite off putting to me. While the restaurant decor and appearance can be improved, overall still an enjoyable experience. We definitely love the food here than OEB.

Ambiance: 3/5 Food: 5/5…read moreService: 5/5 This place is exactly what it promises to be! We had wanted to try this spot for so long and finally got the chance on a Saturday morning. The website says to get there by 8:30 if you want to grab a table without waiting which we thought was crazy, but when we showed up at 8:32 we managed to snag the last free table so they're spot on with their timing! Lots of parties showed up right after us and the waitlist was super long by the time we left. As for ambiance, it's meant to be a greasy spoon diner at the back of a lumber yard so that's exactly what it is. The only part I wasn't expecting and didn't enjoy was that every few minutes you got a waft of the washroom smell even though we were sitting far from it, mostly because there's not a ton of ventilation in a small spot. The staff were super friendly and attentive which was lovely! I got the veggie omelette which came with their shredded hash browns and bread and my partner got the burger and fries. Everything was delicious! Huge portions and well priced. I especially loved the hash browns which were crispy on the outside. Overall a great spot! Just make sure to get there early if you don't want to wait
