I just returned from my first trip to Sugar Mama's Bakeshoppe; I can tell you it will not be the last time I go! There were a couple of people in the shop when I got there and more came in while I was looking over the sweet treats. The young lady at the register called to back and another woman came out to help manage those who were waiting. I bought 2 slices of classic yellow cake with chocolate icing and a chocolate chip cookie. The portions are very generous; the cookie was huge! Everything was so good. The shop itself is very welcoming. It is nice and bright. The first thing one sees walking through the door is the case of cupcakes, cookies, slices of cake, etc. The walls are decorated with pictures of beautiful brides among models of some of the cakes that had been made. AND... they have fabulous DOG TREATS! They look good enough for people to eat! It's a charming place, very reminiscent of old fashioned bakeries with that home-town feel. We were in the mood for something sweet last Saturday and definitely wanted to support the small businesses during this time of turmoil in the world. We walked in and were greeted with a cheerful, welcome! What I know now, we were waited on by Sugar Mama herself... in the flesh. She seems like a sweet soul and loves what she does. My babe was set on apple pie, so he picked up an applejack. I opted in for several cupcakes. I don't recall the sweetness of the shop hitting my nose when we walked in, but it was definitely clean inside and she was honoring the social distance instruction. I chose my cupcakes and wanted to wait until I arrived home to try them. Later that evening, I tried the lemon cupcake... it was a filled cupcake. I remember the cupcake melting in my mouth, that's how fluffy it was. The sweetness wasn't overbearing, but I was hoping for more lemony flavor to burst in my mouth. I also tried the Pina Colada cupcake. It was good, but not better than the lemon. My babe felt the applejack was good, but he wanted more sweetness as well. I must say, if you want just 'enough' sweetness in a treat, this is the place for you! The shop is located in a shopping center off of the busy N. Main Street in Suffolk, VA. There is plenty of parking. With all going on in the world, I am not sure of her hours, but definitely call to inquire before you go. I recommend you check out this bakery. Found this little gem a few days ago while looking for local eateries in our new town of Suffolk! Decided to stop by and check it out! They had a beautiful spot, full of yummy treats including a full display with various cupcakes, mini loaf cakes, etc. I saw a table full of books that looked to be most likely cake designs- the pictures of their unique wedding cakes, bday cakes etc are admirable!! I spent a good 10 minutes drooling over the choices of goodies before I decided on just 2 cupcakes- A chocolate strawberry and a red velvet. Each cupcake was 5.50$ which for me- was a little expensive.. they weren't small per say... but still more than what I expected.. I still got them. I am one to fully support local shops! So just know that they are pricier than most. I also grabbed a chocolate covered Oreo for my teenager and a chocolate covered Rice crispy treat for my oldest. The cupcake that night had a surprise- it actually had fresh strawberries in the middle which was a nice touch and made it actually perfect - the tart strawberries leveled out the sweet chocolate frosting. The kids very much enjoyed the Red Velvet but felt that it was a bit pricey considering we usually go to a local one on Norfolk for $2.00 less. Overall.. we would definitely recommend- it will just be a SPECIAL occasional trip. They do special orders... so if you need a unique dessert for an event - it seems this is the place! read more

I've been to this bakery twice. although I have said both times that I'm not going back, I probably will. First, the service is excellent. The workers are friendly, knowledgeable and engage you in good banter. Second, it is rare to find a traditional bakery. On my first visit I purchased a cookie. It was just "ok" but it was very expensive... for a cookie. On my second visit I purchased a slice of "lemon" pound cake. It was terrible. The pound cake was much yellower than any homemade lemon pound cake I've had. It was also cold (which made me think it had been refrigerated. It had a bland flavor and a gelatinous texture. I couldn't finish it. I threw half of it away. So these experiences weren't terrible, but they weren't good because I want this bakery to be a good option, I will probably try again. read more

Wanting something sweet after brunch at a local restaurant we decided to check this place out. Staff was super sweet and super friendly. The cupcakes were absolutely gorgeous and the flavor combos had me drooling. Sadly that's pretty much where it ended. We ordered a lemon blueberry cupcake, caramel and chocolate one, and a banana pudding one. Sis and I were both so disappointed when we went in for our first bite of each of ours and were so underwhelmed. The cupcakes were just so meh and did not deliver on flavor. Neither of us went past the first bite and decided to save them for the kids who don't care as long as it's sugar. I would not recommend this shop. I contracted Sugar Mama's to provide the wedding cake and desserts for my wedding. First - I was given one set of prices by the young lady who took my order and then the owner tried to charge me more and blame it on the young lady who took my order. Second - my wedding cake looked nothing like what I requested and tasted horrible. When I walked out into the reception and saw the cake I was almost in tears. Had an event at the Suffolk conference center and got desserts from Sugar Mamas. And they did not disappoint!!!! So delicious!!!!

The Bakery is very clean and welcoming. I have visited twice and I was greeted with a smile both times! I tried the potato jacks and they were okay! The filling was delicious but I prefer them deep fried versus a pastry! Today my hubby and I tried the cupcakes. I cringed at the thought of paying $5 for a cupcake. But the cupcakes were delicious. I had a coupon and got one of the cupcakes for 50 % off! We recommend the banana pudding cupcake and the birthday cake so far! read more
