We've been doing takeout from Sugar Shack for a number of years when we're in Nags Head. The fish is usually fresh and freshly prepared, perfect for a quick takeout dinner. This year, we were surprised to see an online ordering option which we quickly took advantage of. It was nice to be able to place an order online early in the day for a dinner time pickup, and other than a little confusion about menu options (which necessitated a quick call that easily resolved the confusion), the online ordering was easy. I arrived at the appointed pick up time, and was immediately told it would be 15 more minutes as they were in the middle of a rush. (The three young men working there were clearly working as fast as they could to fill orders!). In the meantime, I enjoyed checking out the small inside, complete with fresh fish displayed) and a walk around the surrounding dock. We finally got our order about 20-25 minutes after the requested time. After a five minute drive back to the house, we dug in. The fried entrees in our order were all good, except for an order of fried okra which still had some raw batter. The grilled entrees were okay, but overcooked, ranging from mildly overcooked to nearly inedible. Out of our nine entree orders, all were correct except for one which had an incorrect side. Overall, this was a disappointing experience from a place we've loved over the years. We'll certainly try again, but I hope for a much better experience.

The gentleman working there was kind enough to stay open after hours for us as we were arriving about 30 minutes til closing. Generous FRESH servings of delicious seafood that seals Sugar Shack as my go to for the best seafood in the area! The sunset on the sound was stunning

Love the views, service is good. We ordered 4lbs of steamed Alaskan snow crabs. They were $28 a lb! At home in md we can get them for about $15! I wish they would put some apple cider vinegar in their pot though when they cook them. It really helps balance out the fishy taste. They also mixed in some king crablegs in our meal which I didn't care for considering I don't like them nor did I pay for those.

    Salmon! So good

Good sea food fresh from the water made to order. Moist the way it is supposed to be!

Came here one day for lunch in between beach time. They offer both inside and outside seating. It was a little windy that day so I sat inside. I ordered a platter of shrimp and hush puppies. It came with coleslaw and kettle chips made in house. I also ordered a side of hush puppies. Very good and fresh!

So good. After years of eating at a variety of restaurants my friend and I tried Sugar Shack out for the first time. We both ordered the tuna steak sandwich. I got it with fries. My friend had the okra. Both were good. The steak was huge! I tried the she crab soup which was good. The best part was the service. So attentive and friendly. Can't wait to return. I even brought home a pound of tuna steak. It was so drag.

I went in to get the reservation (expecting a long wait due to the crowd) she told me it was an hour and a half. We were totally fine with that, they have a great area to wait in the rear with corn hole, chairs, and a bar. But she made sure to tell me several times about the wait and asked me multiple times if I really wanted to wait that long. It felt like I was being pushed into not dining there. The wait ended up being a little over an hour. We got seated outside and it was beautiful and not too hot. Now let's get to the food. Our group ordered the buffalo shrimp as an appetizer and it was phenomenal!! We got the crab cake dinner, crab cakes sandwiches, and fish and chips for the entrees. They were all delicious as well. Our waitress was super nice to us and made sure we had a great time. So to end it, the food, waitress, and building/grounds was excellent and highly recommend (5/5 stars). The angry hostess that seemed like she didn't want anyone dining there because the wait time somehow bothered her, would not recommend (0/5 stars).

My wife and I brought family from Europe thinking that we would have delicious NC seafood. Instead we had food that was only ok in taste and portions that were laughable. When the server handed my wife a 1/4 glass of wine, I laughed out loud. My $32 dollar dish looked like an appetizer and was less filling. We were 4 pretty small adults who all left hungry after spending more than $125 for our meal. The food was not the only issue. The place feels more like a cafeteria. The service was also terrible. Our waiter had a pretty nasty attitude and either was having a bad day or just hated his job. My advice? Go for the view. Standing outside during sundown was spectacular. Then get in your car and eat somewhere else.

We showed up around 3:00 on a rainy Thursday and were seated immediately, which was much appreciated. We did end up in what was probably the least comfortable booth in the restaurant. I'm sure you guys know the one... It was a tight squeeze for my husband, my daughter, and me, but I'd still take that over waiting in the rain. My husband's crab legs were exactly what he was hoping for, and my crab cake sandwich was delicious. The surprise star of the meal, though, was my daughter's grilled cheese. We somehow ended up on an unofficial "grilled cheese tour" of the Outer Banks, and Tortugas' Lie set the bar at about a 15/10. Every grilled cheese we had after that was chasing first place. The only real tragedy of the visit? My husband accidentally left the bottle of their hot sauce at our Airbnb. Now I'm weighing the cost of ordering another bottle online against the cost of replacing my husband. Jury's still out. If you've never been, put it on your OBX list. We decided that we would finally try it out with a friend who was visiting for his birthday. We ordered Tuna Tartare (very local tuna), calamari, shrimp burger sliders (so glad the shrimp location not being OBX didn't scare us away), house salad, tuna steak dinner, and the chef Mac burger. No one at our table had a single complaint- not even the 7-year-old who ate half the burger and bites of everyone else's food. Further, there was a hiccup, and the restaurant more than made it up by comping desserts that we otherwise would have never ordered (we're just not dessert people). I woke up...and had a delicious time! The reviews here tell you how great this place is, and well...believe them! I thought for sure it would be over-hyped and not live up to what people write and say, but I will admit to being wrong. First, our server, Krickett, was agreed upon (by my partner and I) to be the best server we have ever had. She was friendly, outgoing, had good recommendations, and an all-around joy. Second, the food! Wow! My partner had a salad...simple enough, right? But no, she was amazed by it. And she is a vegetarian, so she has had a lot of salads over the years. This one blew her away. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Was it life-changing? No. But it was way better than what a grilled chicken sandwich normally is. It was tender, juicy, with just the right seasoning. I would be a criminal if I didn't mention the bruschetta...get it with the burrata...it is worth it! The crispy bread with balsamic drizzle is good enough with the diced tomato mix, but the cheese gives it a new level. The restaurant has two distinct dining areas: the front section is first-come first-served bar seating that offers the full menu. The back section, which would be ideal for families, holds about 30 tables, mostly booths, with the hostess stand. We chose to sit at the bar and had a great experience. We started with bruschetta topped with burrata cheese. I ordered the angel hair pasta in a white garlic butter, cream sauce with marinated chicken and grilled vegetables. My husband ordered the special hamburger with Swiss cheese bacon, spinach and mayo with a side of fries. We ended with slices of the key lime pie that didn't disappoint! The food, service, staff and environment were exceptional! We overheard the Server mention that veterans receive complementary meals on Veterans Day, which speaks volumes about how this restaurant supports those who have served.
