Overall the food was fantastic. I ordered the combo po'boy and it was phenomenal. The sweet potato fries were some of the better ones I've had in a while. I also ordered the steamer special that had a dozen oysters cooked to your style and a half pound of shrimp. The oysters I got raw and were amazing! The shrimp is the only thing I wasn't impressed with. They were overcooked and not the best due to that. Overall I would 100% go back for the oysters and po'boy sandwich. read more

Beautiful view of the sound. You order at counter on your way in. The she crab soup was served in styrofoam bowl. I love she crab soup but this had a fishy taste. Drinks served in plastic cups. Food is served on styrofoam plates. The coconut shrimp was very good and the serving was large. The cole slaw was probably the most tasty thing I had. The beet salad was shredded beets and apples. Couldn't taste the apples but something else was with the beets. I love beets but didn't care for this. Found it a contradiction that there were signs everywhere re: protecting marine life but food was served in styrofoam with plastic cups and utensils. read more

**Edit***. This review is for Sugar Creek waterfront and not Sugar Shack. Stopped for dinner and a sunset. The sunset took the prize. This is your typical seafood and fish house. Love the nautical and coastal decor throughout the spacious interior. Our waitress was fantastic. All the wait staff was working hard to keep up with a full house. We ordered hush puppies with honey butter as a appetizer. They were not good. Too greasy and dense. I had a Cesar salad that was pretty good. For dinner I ordered the large shrimp plate with a baked potato and my wife got the steamer pot. All of her seafood was over cooked and rubbery. My shrimp were cooked good with a light breading. The baked potato was not cooked completely. One thing I noticed was the menu said cornbread came with the meals but we did not receive any. read more

Each course was better than the last! First up was the Hatteras clam chowder. Clear broth chock full of clams and goodies. Delicious! This was served with soft cornbread and tons of butter. 2nd was the Caesar salad, crisp, fresh, anchovy taste of yum! Then my wife had the flounder which was buttery and fresh. My steamed shrimp were seasoned and perfectly cooked. We could not finish anything so had no problem with having it for the following day as well! read more

Refills were not offered condiments for our burger and seafood was not brought out, the lady at the front was very dull and it was almost like she didn't want to be there. The toppings on the burger were not even edible was like they had been left out for days and were not fresh. 78 dollars later for a burger shrimp and a crab cake and a few sodas. i would say thumbs down at this joint! read more

We drove from Corolla only to find that the sit down dining room was closed for lunch midweek. But, the Sugar Shack Seafood Market was open and they had a great menu and would also fix any of the grease fish that was on sale in addition to the menu items. I ordered the fried catfish with fried okra. My wife had jumbo shrimp and fried okra. The batter was light and not greasy. This quality of this meal was much better than I would normally expect from a market whose primary focus was selling fish instead of preparing food. This was the best seafood meal we had in the Outer Banks on this April 2021 trip. We plan on returning in our next trip. read more

Review is for the formal restaurant. We chose this place over the Oyster grill only because my husband wanted red meat while I wanted seafood. Lovely deck overlooking the bay. The wind was out of control - actually too windy. Highlights: Great seafood - loved the steamed shrimp app & my fried clams were delish! Salad was good but I had a hard time eating it as the salad was flying off the plate! Husbands prime rib was pretty good - large portion. Lowlights: Service sucked big time. Our waitress was terrible. We had lunch here on our recent visit to nags head and it was amazing! I had the bbq sandwich, fries and hushpuppies. Everything was delicious, hands down the best slaw we had all week. Bbq was so delicious we got takeout to take back to our niece and her bf that was staying with us. The hushpuppies with that butter was also the best I had while on vacay. Wish we'd had a chance to visit again before we left. The service was great and the location provided amazing views while eating and after we ate we went out to check out the view even more. We had lunch here after seeing the dolphins. We liked they had lunch specials and were kid friendly. There were large parties near us so it was very loud. Our waiter was very nice but it took a little while to get refills and be checked on. They bring out yummy cornbread when they bring your drinks. I had the fried oyster and shrimp special with succotash and fruit. The seafood and fruit were really good. The succotash didn't taste fresh and I would get something else in the future, I enjoyed my virgin pina colada. Over all a pretty good place to eat but maybe eat outside. read more

Stars don't lie here. We were very happy with our visit. The place is a little misleading on approach looking like a fish market, but don't let it fool you. After you pull your gaze away from the glass display full of fresh sea life the menu is above. I ordered the seafood platter. Wife got the Shrimp PO Boy and my son got the burger. We ordered two appetizers as well. Son begged for the Mac n cheese bites and I ordered the Crab Spring rolls. The spring rolls were great. They have seating both inside and outside. Food was very good! I got the crab cake sandwich, and my mother got the fried shrimp which came with a dozen pieces. Said it was the best shrimp she's ever had. My boyfriend had a burger which he said was just ok. Hush puppies were awesome. For $80 I expected the plates not to be styrofoam and the soda not to taste like syrup.. Service wasn't great. We decided to eat outside, they have 6 picnic tables. But the bushes block the entire view of the water! What a let down, since it's such a great spot. read more

We visited the Shack 3 days out of our 5 day stay. The 1st visit as soon as we walked in our party of 7 was met with "we are not serving food right now", during open hours in the afternoon. 2nd visit my party of 4 received a great meal. The 3rd visit our party of 7 were informed at 1pm they were out of Shrimp, so we ate elsewhere. We have been eating at the Shack for years and are very disappointed. read more

The Chicken Tender Appetizer is honestly the best thing we ate. Fresh, juicy, and pipping hot they were absolutely delicious. I got the Atlantic Grilled Salmon and while it was good, it wasn't great. It came with orzo, and veggie medley which all lacked seasoning but nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't fix. My husband got the Fried Flounder and fries. The flounder was fried with skin on and it was fresh, he said he would eat it again but nothing absolutely great. I love Sugar Shack. We go here every year without fail. Usually I'm all about the marinated tuna, but I decided to try something new, and I'll forever be torn between these two. There were 10 shrimp, fries and coleslaw, and a delicious chili sauce to go with it. It was reasonably priced, especially for what you got and the ambiance, too. The views cannot be beat. In the summer you will be waiting, for a considerable time, but off season is the time to go. They close down after Thanksgiving, so get there in that sweet spot. read more

We have been coming here for year for the steamers. They stopped them a couple years ago but bright then back this season as a pot for two. My wife and I ordered it but it wasn't for two. Same amount if food as the prior iterations. I'm addition m, everything was over cooked. My wife ordered fired green tomatoes that alone were good but the sauce made it hard to eat. The food issues could be overlooked as a bad day but the service was horrible. When we arrive we were met by an unenthusiastic woman checking people in. When we got called up it was more of the same. The hostess seated us with little excitement. Our server was less than energetic and customer friendly. Other than one server most of the staff appeared to sleep walking and disinterested. We have enjoyed eating here every summer for years. Usually the seafood is excellent and the service friendly. The ownership has recently changed. I get the same fried oyster and shrimp platter every time. On this visit, the fried oysters on my plate were in a puddle of oil. The fried batter on the shrimp, oysters, and fish had no seasoning. Only getting this review because of our waitress and the view. Food was sub par at best. Ordered seafood pasta and the shrimp were over cooked and dried out, basically seafood dumped on linguine. Sides consisted of fries, mashed potatoes, cucumber salad. A side salad with this pasta entree was $6 additional... who eats fries w/ pasta and believe me, cucumber salad and marinara are not a good combo. Pretty darn expensive and pretty much inedible. This is the market place beside the restaurant which can be a little confusing. Their names are similar. Come her for the coleslaw as it was my favorite of the week here in the OuterBanks. It was very creamy and maybe a bit too creamy for many people. I loved it enough to eat mine and my wife's. I ordered a tuna steak which seemed to be fairly priced and it was pretty good. I think it would have been better to eat it there but we got it for carryout. They also had very good sweet potato fries. If I was coming for sides then this place would be my favorite place on the island for the week. My family enjoyed the food here but it wasn't as good as a few other meals we had on the OBX. Expect to be busy shooing flies while eating. FOOD: Clam Chowder - It's not New England nor Manhattan style. It's brownish in color and tastes like clam beef vegetable soup. Good but not what I was expecting. Shack Attack Po' Boy - This sandwich is way too big. I don't think anyone can open their mouth that wide. I ate with a fork and tossed the bread. It contains fried flounder, shrimp, scallops & oysters on a roll spread with marinara sauce and drizzled with an Italian dressing-Tabasco sauce and topped with shredded lettuce, and potato chips on the side. Unfortunately it lacked any sort of flavor or personality. Large Shrimp - 10 or so lightly breaded and deep-fried shrimp and shoestring fries. The breading isn't your usual thick & frozen breadcrumb variety which was awesome, because I can cook that at home! It came with a mildly spicy & peppery sauce for dipping. Doesn't look like much of a place from the outside, especially next to the bigger, sister restaurant right next door. But for those of us that DON'T require full sleeve to have a good meal, this was a better option. I'm pretty sure we ordered a little of everything on the menu our first time. My husband loved the shrimp, daughter loved her BBQ, and the burger was to die for according to my other guest. Fish sandwich was good as well. Great portion sizes too! The crab spring rolls were good as well as the hush puppies (although not the best I've had in the OBX) the special butter topped them off perfectly. The small outdoor area is so pretty at sunset and being right on the water, there was a nice breeze. The staff was so nice and welcoming. Owner chatted with us a bit. We will definitely be returning on our future OBX visits and most likely drag along any guest we have with us. read more

This place was great. Friendliest staff in all Nags Head. A lady working there gave my son extra pickles for his burger after telling her how much he loved pickles. Well, he ate the pickles and his sides and didn't touch his burger ...I'm glad, because after eating my coconut shrimp, I took a bite of his burger and then couldn't put it down. It was the best burger I've had. Flame grilled! My wife ordered the clam chowder soup and used the word "perfect" to describe it. We sat outside and enjoyed the sunset. Well priced seafood for the amount that you receive. We had a pound of large steamed shrimp with medium seasoning and they melted in your mouth! We had a dozen raw oysters that you had to fold over to fit on the cracker. Fish and chips was a perfectly battered and fried piece of flounder with homemade chips.
