My first time here was not a super pleasant experience, but this time was a lot better. We stopped by here for some take-out, and it was all solidly good. The mac n cheese balls were good, but obviously a commercial product that were just fried or re-heated there. Hushpuppies were solidly good. I opted for the take 2 fried, with sea scallops and shrimp, both delicious, and some pretty solid sweet potato fries. Awesome takeout options and really friendly staff! Food was hot and coming out of the kitchen exactly on time as we walked in the door. Everything was well packaged and super fresh. Went to Sugar Shack Seafood for the first time. We were seated right away and our server was very helpful. We chose to sit outside overlooking the water. For several minutes there was a horrible sulfur smell coming from the parking lot area but after about five minutes it went away, thankfully. We shared hushpuppies and the honey butter was amazing. The wife got Alfredo with chicken. The sauce was different but was very very good. The chicken was blackened perfectly and was very tasty. I got the seafood platter which had so much food. The fish of the night was catfish which was ok. The shrimp and the scallops were outstanding. The fried clams were ok, I just don't really care for fried clams. We got hummingbird cake for desert which was amazing. It was so sweet and delicious. This was a very good place for a nice dinner. read more

We don't understand why anyone would give this place 3 stars. Don't expect a full fledged restaurant. If you want that, go next door. It's called a shack for a reason. Limited but clean seating inside with a view of the bay. A small space eating outside with an incredible view of the bay as well -- and plus, plus, it accepts dogs! We loved it so much we came back for more. So far we've had three dishes: the shrimp/oyster po boy was super fresh and yummy. We held off on the creole tomato sauce - we are po boy purists. The boom boom sauce, however, was great. Next time we'll ask for more. The crab cakes were some of the best we've tasted and the raw oysters were incredibly fresh. It made our weekend watching the sunset from our table. THE OUTSIDE CURB APPEAL SUCKS FROM THE ROAD BUT Everything from the sidewalk to the ocean is a painting. Someone should dress up the front. My family and I had a wonderful time here, seriously would recommend if you're going to OBX. I ended up spending around $90 for me and my boyfriend, so it was more on the expensive side for me, but it was totally worth it and that's coming from somebody who doesn't like to spend money! Lol! The hush puppies were amazing, and they came with this great honey butter, the onion rings were great, I tried a little of everyone's food which included the salmon, The popcorn shrimp, the teriyaki, risotto, shrimp and grits, chicken alfredo, and sides and i cant say they werent all a great meal and none of them disappointed. Our waitress, gosh i forget her name but she had very very short hair and star wars earrings, she was just wonderful. So sweet! We sat inside which we thought wouldnt be as "special" but the interior is beautiful and its set up so that most seating feels at least a little "private." The view was great from our window. I ordered a flounder meal with sides and they were fine the flounder itself was breaded very much. This was a shame for a 34 dollar meal but worst of all The fish seemed old and tasted fishy. 2 other friends ordered tuna and both of them said it was well over done so they also did not finish there meal. Really loved our experience here today. This is a small place but there is more seating outside in the back. They do have a fish counter for you to order something to cook on your own, but there is also a great selection of fish platters, sandwiches, steamed options, and specials. You order at the counter here. We had tuna bites and flounder fish and chips. The chips were homemade, the slaw really fresh and good, and the fish was perfect. Stopped because our friend's knickname is Sugar, and upon walking in, decided to stay for lunch. Delicious food, very friendly staff, reasonably prices, and a gorgeous view. And the homemade banana pudding is a MUST, and I mean that!!! Glad we stopped, and will likely be back before our vacation is over! They serve beer, which is a bonus! But be aware, you order at the counter so don't sit and wait for someone to come take your order! I previously decided I would use Yelp for only positive reviews for great food or service. So I will start and end with a positive ......on July 29 I visited sugar shack to pick up a bushel of crabs and a couple pounds of shrimp. This is a cool restaurant and seafood market on the sound . Our shrimp was excellent and the staff was friendly. The sound view is epic The crabs however were less than sub par. And I honestly think it's a management process problem not the cooks When you enter the door there is a sign a sign warning customers that crabs were not returnable in hind sight I should have turned around and left Problems with sugar shack crabs 1. They charge 140 for a bushel and claim they only have #1s 2.we had numerous crabs in our bushel that were very very small and likely illegal in NC picture attached and numerous paper shells 3 I was told I would have to try a crab before I left I was brought a cold crab that appeared to be steamed earlier in the daydream on a previous date 4 almost the entire bushel of crabs was god awful and overlooked The issue with sugar shack is simple they do not know how to steam crabs . They are steaming them twice and selling them as fresh #1s If you are a Maryland crab lover steer clear of this place for blue crabs You are likely safe with other items on the menu read more

Insanely high prices for run-of-the mill beach fried food. ($9 for a cup of soup -- $10 for a bowl). I just wanted a little soup before lunch. But it wasn't worth $9 to me. So I ate the free bread and they made $zero on the soup. Crab legs $22 a pound is higher than every other restaurant around. They have a wonderful view on the waterfront. Our waitress wasn't too engaged and didn't have the best of manners. But she wasn't bad, either. What ruined it for me was how fast our freshly and steaming hot shrimp orders came out (good) but were served with old, room temperature, soggy French fries. That ruined the experience and the meal as the shrimp got cold while we waited for hot fries. That's just a lazy kitchen that doesn't care about quality. I was also taken back late afternoon at how many sides they were out of. I'd return. The food was "ok." But it wouldn't be my first choice. I'd be going back if I was with other people who picked it after I suggested the two better restaurants directly across the street. Lastly, no manager came around to give me a chance to share my experiences. Had the manager stopped over and addressed them, I'm sure my review could have been more positive. I should probably rate this two stars. But considering how many worse restaurants there are in nags head, I'm giving them 3 stars to reflect how they rate against others nearby. read more

This restaurant was better in the past. I remember this food being some of the best food I had eaten in OBX not too long ago, but now in my opinion, it's just subpar food for an extremely high price. For example, the appetizer of coconut shrimp was good, but not the best coconut shrimp I've ever had. The cornbread they served was extremely crumbly, to the point is was almost impossible to eat. A member of my party ordered a side salad (which was $6 extra!) and the salad was extremely small and served with dried out lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes that had a brownish discoloration to them. The salad looked like it had been sitting out for a while, and we sent it back and asked them to take the $6 charge off our bill which the staff was okay with doing. For the main course, another member of my party ordered a fried clam plate with a side of fries. The clams were extremely small, and the fries were not home made. In fact, the fries they served were from Sysco, which are the same fries served in many K-12 public school lunches! So if you are wanting a throw back to how your school cafeteria lunches used to be, then this is the place to go. Otherwise, this restaurant is just okay. If you want to eat here for a relatively reasonable price, use their early bird special. Otherwise, there are other restaurants I'd rather eat at for a lower price and better food. Alternatively, Sugar Creek next door is a lot better food and has friendlier staff read more

Since someone in the party was obsessed with going to Sugar Shack even though we had already been to Sugar Creek the day before, we made sure we got there before they closed this time. I personally did not find it worth the 8-9 mile drive from the Ocean Reef. The shrimp were actually cooked a little better than the night before at Sugar Creek, they were fresh and tender, but lacked shrimp flavor. The Hattaras style chowder was just OK, very salty with not much seafood flavor. The slaw was inedible. I love slaw and eat it in almost all forms, but not this time. It was hideous, with spoiled sour cream flavors. I see no reason to go to Sugar Shack unless it would be to pick up fresh seafood to cook ourselves. So two stars for dining in. read more

I called 15 minutes before we arrived to ask if they serve raw oysters (they are not listed on their online menu). The person I talked to said they did. We arrived (and saw that they do have raw oysters listed on their menu in the restaurant) and when we ordered, we were told they wouldn't do raw oysters because they were too busy to shuck them and also didn't have anyone there who wasn't still training to shuck. This was disappointing and frustrating since I had called ahead only 15 mins before. We ordered steamed oysters instead. We did not care for them and will not order steamed again. We also ordered a shrimp po boy, calamari, crab spring rolls and banana pudding. Other than the steamed oysters and crab spring rolls, everything was ok. These guys are awesome. We visit them at least three times every time we are vacationing in Outer Banks. On a side note, despite them being short staffed during these mad times they churn out incredible food consistently. It is sad to see people get upset with them when they are short staffed. Catfish I had there was no seasoning on it. The coleslaw also didn't have any seasoning. We brought this up to the server she offered to have them remake it. However it was so bad I didn't want them to make something else and they offered no other solutions. Also ordered the crab dip and there was barely any crab in it and mostly taste like bacon. Our regular seafood market was closed for the season so we stopped at Sugar Shack. Prices were about average but we were surprised they charge for steaming-- per pound no less. We purchased oysters, shrimp, flounder and a bowl of crab bisque. The cashier was very friendly and the chef got our order done quickly. We paid for them to steam the oysters and shrimp but took the flounder back to our rental and cooked it ourselves. There's nothing like fresh seafood, and Sugar Shack's was very fresh. The flounder was really thick and super moist. The oysters were awesome (only two didn't open). The shrimp were great also, even though there was very little Old Bay. By far the best seafood that I've had on the Outer Banks. I ordered the broiled seafood platter, and everything was delicious! From the catch of the day to the scallops, I throughly enjoyed every bite. It tasted fresh, and was the perfect ending to vacation. Service was wonderful, and the scenery was breathtaking!
